Perhaps this should go in the WIP section, since im going to take it beyond the sketch, but since its inspired by todays topic i´ll post it here.

The idea is that of a small viking warband receiving a blessing by their chieftain, who, of course, worships Thor.

interesting how thor never had a hammer in real mythology but 80% of the drawings have a hammer.... damn marvel comics...

TheMightyArtistChu
September 2nd, 2003, 05:46 PM
he did though, Thor wielded a hammer

not sure if he used it ALL the time, but he had a hammer

on the THor beer bong...

is that a clever reference to when he tried to out drink that giant with the magic horn that was connected to the ocean?

or are beer bongs just humerous, because they are, specially when you're a viking god

Hi davi,

In fact Thor had - at least in the Prose-Edda - a hammer called Mjölnir. That´s the reason there survived many viking amulets with a hammer motif ´cause he was the most popular god in scandinavia and as Donar in the rest of Germania (I myself have two for my occasional viking-reenactment ;))

Here´s my interpretation of Thor:

hammers of thor

and i remembered that tale as well. trinking out the ocean, i saw a cartoon of it. i forgot whethere it was thor or someoneelse. there was also an eating contest where he had to compete agianst fire. he had to eat chickenlegs. all teh tests (i bet there were more) were some kind of illusion.

oh really, i always remembered him using a long spear:

http://www.pantheon.org/areas/gallery/mythology/europe/norse/thor.gif

beh norse mythology is kind of boring, i never really read much into it. my bad.

best thing about norse mythology is Einherjar's and Ragnarok-- Ragnarok would be a great movie.

Davi- The guy on the picture you posted is most probably Odin, as he is the one that rides the eightlegged horse and uses the spear in combat. If its a picture of Thor i believe the artist got things mixed up, as Thor to my knowledge never fought on horseback.

It looks like a sweet piece of art though, do you have a link to a bigger version of it?

btw, great work all.

I just use ps. Looking back at my pic, I absolutely hate the background.

... I have this incredible urge to draw thor as a mech. Excuse me for half an hour or so...

I think Thor is behind the guy on the horse-Odin it was? He seems to be holding a hammer and all too. Appears to be a battle with a giant serpent o.0

dead on half hour from last post, sweet.

Not quite finished though, the forearms are big hydradic telescoping hammer things, if you get my drift.

Damn you guys do some killer work!

Chu, I just thougth the beer bong would add a little humor as aside from the hammer, one of the main things i remembered about him was he enjoyed beer.

I found this online... might be of interest:

The name of our offline reader is taken from the son of the greatest of the gods in Norse mythology, Odin. Thor is the powerful god of thunder, agriculture, farmers and free men. As the god of thunder, he travels above the clouds in a carriage drawn by two goats. His weapon is the hammer Mjoelner, which represents lightning. Thor is also the god of rain and fertility.

Thor is big and very strong, especially when he is wearing his belt of power, Megingjord. He has a great appetite and drink lots of mjod (beer). He is righteous and has a violent temper. His simple and uncomplicated personality contradicts the multiplicity of Odin, the god of the princes, warriors, magicians, and poets. In the myths, the most prominent trait of Thor is his power, often connected to the hammer and his belt.

In the time of Ragnarok (the end of the world), Thor dies in a battle with the wyrm of Midgard, a gigantic beast whose body entrails the whole world.

About 1000 years ago, before the christening of Norway, people often wore jewels with hammer symbols. Thor was a very popular god.

These are good today. All of the results are diverse too. I think I might try one before bed. Yeah I just looked at that pic and the guy with the hammer, although not the focal point was the third thing I looked at after the serpent. Could be Thor too but who knows?

I spent an hour on this blaring music in my headphones. My aim was a decent pose. Pencil, ink, some touch ups in PS which made it look worse perhaps. Just trying to darken the darks and lighten the lights. I don't know why I made drew a square behind him. Trying to create a focal point right? I guess there's an imaginery focal point somewhere in there. The dogg-eared page corner is a nice hasty scan yes?

Man, I dig what Mr. Hand put up! I've got to get a tablet! (and spend more time HERE,)
TRE-COOL! I was into davi's black line drawing as well, with the bolt coming out the mouth, I liked the idea of a different body-type for Thor, as opposed to the standard-issue pumped pecks and bitchen sixpack...

I'm a brand spankin' NOOB here, but it's aces, you guys seem like you're having fun, and learning so, here's my sketch!

It took about 1 hour and a half, I was helping my lil' bro edit his resume, (lost some time there) so, 1 hour 45 minutes max spent on it. No refs, all from my head pretty much... I used blue pencil, then layed down inks, and went digital for about 10 minutes.

Have a nice day out there, glad to be among so much talent!

p.s. That's funny vij! Some guys'll find ANY reason to draw a mech! haha...
