I absolutely love it. The way you handle your linework is very refreshing. Keep the posts coming, I'll be checking back ;)

Love the linework on those first couple of pieces, very nice indeed. It has a quirkiness to it that brings to mind a couple of children's books illustrators, whose names escape me, but who had that same slightly wobbly line quality. Great work!

ah man I get so happy sometimes. These sketches makes me so happy. :)
Some of them looks a bit like them old metalwinds drawings.
I was just about to quit my little drawing session for this evening, however now I'm stuck for at least an other hour.
I remember your old thread, you've developed lots, congrats. :)

Nice stuff, I enjoy your sketchbook pages a lot. I like to see random thoughts put down visually. I'm the same way. That 3 page wide cityscape sketch is insane... It seems like it could have got so confusing, but you still pulled it to a point where it reads well.

I'd like to see a more finished self portrait from you though. The ones you posted were like teasers, makes me wanna see what you would do with more time.

Good lines, fine shading, and a willingness to experiment, nice stuff. I like the red line sps the best. That's pretty damn good for your first oil painting. One thing you might try is pushing the color more, as it's fairly muted. But it's working as is, so only if you want to.

Tigermilk
November 11th, 2007, 02:58 PM
Damn, that portrait is good man. I can't wait to see it finnished! :)
I somehow agree with Blue Severin regarding the colors though, I suppose those high lights could be more strong. However, I also suppose it's barely half finnished still, and it looks really good, love the lips.
Sketches looking radical too, love the last couple!!

Keep it up, I'm subscribing to this one.

Coinpurse- that portrait is actually part of series i'm doing for one of my classes, it's suppose to be a tumor or something like that, a disfiguration you could say...the rest of the paintings are similar in that they all have some shit like that going on..its actually a self-portrait as well

i'm digging the pages dood. Just don't let others work influence yours TOO much. The thing is to take what you like from each artist and learn from it. I mean hell, i'm guilty of it as well. I remember from the workshops that it's good to be able to do what everyone else does well, but it's even better to do your own thing the best... or something like that. Hope it makes sense man. Cheers!

dadushin
November 29th, 2007, 07:23 PM
Darktwin-Thanks for the pointers

Zord-Hey man i totally know what you mean, I'm still trying to get away from that but just recently(like really recently) i felt like i was on the right track... because now, whenever i draw, i don't even think about it anymore...i used to think "how do i make it like his or hers and make it good as them" the whole time i was drawing...I got rid of that at least and now when i draw i just do it cause its fun and it feels fun and I'M interested in what i'm drawing and focus on that instead of having a jumble of other artist drawings swimming around in my head.. and do it how feels best, instead of drawing to emulate the movements of someone else's hand...i know that its corny haha but yea i realized copying just doesn't work

a good example of that is wes burts way of designing his pages, i mean hes so good at it and i used to try to do it cause it was so cool...but i don't even like drawing shapes and patterns and all that other crazy ass awesome shit he does, it just doesn't complement my flow of drawing, i finally realized that and asked myself if i don't even like it t why the hell am i doing it

why do people have to be so damn inspirational...haha

Nice update dood.

I totally agree with you about doing what feels natural. Copying others work can help your own but ultimately it's what YOU do that decides the lines, design, and overall feel of the work. Big ups on that. :)

The faces come with practice; I like going where there's a variety of people, like at a coffeeshop or student union of a school. They move around a lot and forces you to focus more on gesture and form rather than rendering.

The tiny captions along the drawrings are funny, I like the 'fork arrow.'
Cheers man!

Your paintings are very vividly lit, I think the photo quality is bad... but why the grotesque tumor growth all over the place? Maybe there's a reason, i didn't read your text much just looked at the work. Your pieces with the tumors which are oil paintings are the best but looking at your pencils I'm surprised you're the same artist. Really such a jump, maybe you're improving a lot and the rest are just sketches as they all look unfinished. Either way I would like to see a well lit fully rendered piece which shows correct symmetry not disrupted by a bulbous tumor.

Thanks for dropping by my SB, I appreciate the comments.

December 8th, 2007, 11:30 PM
the painting is effing nice man....Some crits though(Please remember that I am noob myself)
Okay here goes..
Like the overall feel of things but some values seem somewhat wrongs, some highlights , are out of place like at the the edge of the forhead, the contrast seems too harsh, the highlights on the punched eye....are not implying a snese of form..And you gotta push the contrast I want to see some darks....
Some solidity to the rendering of the fac will give the painting a strong focal point, right now the way the face and the shirt are painted is somewhat the same....

still gotta say that you are so much better than I in oil paints...and the sketches too are rad...
Keep going.

n1va- yea niva it was part of an assignment, i o wish that i didn't have to but it was still interesting and i did learn from it, it also made me want to do more portraits as well, as for the well lit fully rendered piece...i don't really post that stuff here, maybe i should

thek- hey thanks for the comments man!

bhanu- thanks for the crits man! good eye too...thanks for pointing out the forehead i realize what you are saying, i did pay the least attention to that part
i still need to go into the darks as well...hey man you had very valid points doesn't matter if you are a "noob" thanks bro

hey man,
i thought id come by and see wat ur work is like, now that ive got the chance to, especially since uve visited my work on several occasions
when i look at ur work, and then at mine i see ur well ahead of me antomy-wise and head structure (im getting the hang of it now though). also u seem to be very much influenced by asian lifestyle (clothes etc.) and uve used these to ur advantaged and depicted ur images well.
id like to see more stuff.

Paintings are looking tight and nice. I think the shadow behind the figure in the last is a bit light in value, as the face looks like it's getting hit by a fairly strong light source. The tumorous growths are alright, but not reading as strong spacially as the rest of the faces. The pencils look nice with cool anatomy. Bhanu hit some good points.

First, thanks for stopping by the sb, thought I'd return the favor. Second, you've got crazy good pencil work, I love seeing it. The three page landscape in the back looks like it should become a digit paint, its got great depth. Also the later pencil work with higher contrast really catches my eye. I'm in I.D. and we're all about strict line quality, so seeing looser sketches always is interesting to me. I like that I can see how you moved about the page, etc. much like in the wet charcoal stuff you did. Finally, those paintings are tight, are you doing the series for a class or just personal work? Either way, I like that the disfigurations seem like legitimate tumors and don't lose the great style you have in the rest of the painting. Love the lighting too. Solid.

I don't know if this was said before, but I see alot of Marko Djurdjevic in your drawings. He's an inspiration to me too. But try not to copy the style, but adapt it to what fits you best! Tight shit, by the way! Cool stuff here! :D

Hi! Great improvement in here!
Looks like you really dig markos work! ;)
The only advise I can give you is to spend more time looking at anatomic errors in you drawings. On thing I see happen is that you make the thorso and midsection of the body to big. Cheers man! I enjoyed your SB and Ill be back for more.

very nice work man!

i really like the paintings ;)

the characters design have a nice rendering style, but yes, you should try different designs too...find inspration in anythng, and transform it into smething else :)
practice drawing hands too, i see you do't usually liek drawing them (hand and feet are bloody hard, but they are needed i a finished character :))

nice work, shw us more!

yo dadu, thx for stoppin by the book. i like the stuff you have in here, especially your rendering style. anatomy is still taking shape, that's ok. just keep pushing it every chance you get. one thing i would think would help is doing some gesture drawing, or "snipe sketching" as some people like to call it. take a tiny sketchbook, go to the train, and just draw whoever you find interesting, either their clothes, pose, whatever; get practice drawing real people and seeing how real bodies behave. how the body balances itself, how weight effects certain body parts, what emotions people convey through their pose and body language, etc. these will help you bulid up a mental library that you can use when drawing from your head. just needs repetition, so just crack at it. biggest problem at the moment (at least with posing), is legs. almost all of them are straight up and down, with no bend. i would recommend, if you get a chance, pick up a bridgman book or two; they have been the best source of anatomical information for me. good luck man, i wanna see madd progress from you! keep pushin! :cheerleader:

I thought the last 2 guys in this post were super cool:

Some anatomy things like shoulders, and a long upper arm, but I know anatomy has alredy been mentioned, or is already on the list so I won't shout it at you! I barely make time for it myself. See ya!

Hey dadushin Thanks for your nice comments in my SB. The paintings are well executed. The shadows, in fact, have alot of movement and a sense of air. Am curious as to your idea behind the self portraits. What motivates the deformities?

dadushin
December 14th, 2007, 11:18 PM
gkrit- hey thanks for the comments man, you are well on your way too

Blue Severin- thanks for the crits, definitely see what you mean. I did have trouble with the deformations and i think it shows, gotta keep workin at it.

RABIDTOOTH- thanks yo

Draniel- it was for a school project, more of a spontaneous thing, i think it went quicker because i pretty focused most of the time as well as it was the third one, kinda got more feel for how things work after doing the first two

Leadster618- thanks a lot man! the paintings are part a series for one of my classes, and good idea about the landscape, definitely gotta try that shit out once i get a tablet, if i ever do wah wah haha

Timmy the Turtle- hey thanks man, still working on that aha! i also think it has to do with the designs as well

Peetaer- thanks yo

B-Man- thanks for the pointers, i know what you mean i do have a things for making things to big and too small, especially heads, gotta work on that

TheGnoll- yup yup! you definitely hit hard on what some of my main problems are, i am currently trying to work on it haha...one thing also about the inspiration, i'm really trying to make art my life, well it kinda is being here at school, but i mean in a more mental way. make it a lifestyle...you are totally right about finding inspiration from everything...wherever i go i try to just "see" everything i can...i'm still not trying to force it though...haha long response...but yea still building my library and definitely know what you mean.

purb36- thats a good idea man, i have not been able to draw from life really at all for like lately, really dying to do some figure drawing and stuff. also gotta learn how to apply those to my imaginative stuff

Jakers- haha yea man anatomy is still a top priority thanks for the comments

agelaos- will do man, thanks

AztcFireFlower- thanks for dropping by..the paintings were more a spontaneous idea than a real deep meaning. But they do have some personal things behind them which i will share maybe one day ;)

again
thanks for all the comments and help guys wouldn't be where i am without the :yayca:

I really, really dig your style, man. :) Very 'relaxed', so to speak, and confident. Just keep up at it!

In light of those wonderful paintings, I would love to see you do a pencil-portrait - doesn't matter if it is from a reference-photo or live model.

Oh, and I only recently started to frequent ConceptArt ( I even have a sketchbook here which I rather seldomly update, thanks to having no scanner at my current location.. I have only done digital sketches for it so far ), and I, too, haven't been very serious about drawing before. It is all changing, though, since I am loving the whole 'learning aspect' of art these days. I want to learn and improve, darn it! :p

Anyway, keep up the good work. I'll definetely come back to check this SB frequently. You have a new fan. :)

Hey Dadushin,

You've got the ability and potential to really shine, it's obvious from the patience inherent in your renders.

However, it's still early in the game and you've got some kinks to work out. The biggest impediment you seem to be struggling with is how to convey convincing anatomy and you're stuck on a couple of solutions, which is evident where you've consistently drawn the chest and shoulders in the exact same way several times. where the deltoid has nothing to do with the pectoral which has nothing to do with the biceps and so on. Each muscle group has a direct effect on the surrouding muscle groups and a muscle can technically only do one thing, which is PULL on something. Your bicep doesn't push your arm forward, it gives tension for when your tricep and brachialis pull your arm down. IF you keep that simple fact in mind when fleshing out characters, it makes for a much simpler time visualising how things have to work. Also keep in mind symmetry, the body needs both halves to work, front and back, side to side. Throw a punch, feel how your whole body has to react in order for that action to take place. That's almost always true of any action. Draw things as a whole and it'll help you feel out your poses and characters much easier. The whole point of this is that you should avoid systematic solutions, you're obviously better than that.

If you post more paintings I'd love to talk more about those too!

~Andrew

hey man! fellow risd slave :)
hope your enjoying the break for the next, what, two days before wintersession?
well, since you asked for my farty old senior advice, i thought i'd toss some things out, since there is still time for you to get what i failed at doing!:
but first off, just know the last sophomore i talked to about my true risd sentiments i convinced to leave :O ! do you know emmie?

in the short, definitely take any and all opportunities to experiment until you feel comfortable and understand what you're trying to get out of your art. you really have to fight hard to get the good classes and informative teachers (i didnt get anything i wanted until second semester junior year! ) but now i realize instead of doing all the tawdry work for teachers that didnt really care : cough : bill hall ), i should have just said 'fark it!' and focused on my own development that i wanted to see. in the end they should grade you on your personal effort, which so far is really impressive. and if they dont grade you well, dont worry, its not stamped on your portfolio :) and deifnetely try to get fritz for any and all classes, friggin genius!

actually, we should just meet up this coming semester and i can throw a few suggestions around if ya want man! i live in the bowels of provwash in my studio. send me a line ur facebook or something i guess? btw what are you taking for wintersession?
sick paintings btw

hey man, I didnt forget that crit that i mentioned...just a little late sorry (your drawings are rocking by the way)

In your paintings I can suggest using the background more to your advantage. The few that I have seen have a greyish bg. Try to use more color in it. The best paintings have a tint to the bg's that is echoed throughout the paintings. Try and mess with more reds in your skin tones. I see a lot of browns and yellows but some reds might offer some variety as will subtle blues and greens. Also try and feather some of your edges more and soften them. You can be loose and soft in certain areas and get more hard in areas with actual hard edges like eyelashes and such. Cuz if you think about it the side of the face is a turning soft sphere so it won't really have a hard edge...

Hope this helps.

happy holidays

One thing I'd say is they all look slightly stiff. I don't know if you are doing it or not, but I think you'd benefit alot from some life drawing. Get a bit more looseness and gesture going with your figures and they'll feel better.

hey dude, great updates....i think Clodioz is on to something here about the helmet comment, also i suggest watch out for the pose of the hands, it can start to get repetitive from time to time as you choose to draw the pose that you are more comfortable with (i know because i do this a lot :^^;:....keep up the hard work man!

Thanks! I know about the contrast, the thing is when I try to get darker on shades or just to make a better sensation of volume I loose colours. I still don't know / understand contrast and opacity of colours and the painting loses when I try to get deeper on that.

Very cool desings, I don't know why but I don't remember having seen that sb!

Thank you very much (anyone telling anything from long ago :p)

thanks for the visit to my sb. :]

Your sketches look so clean. Your characters look really cool. You have a great imagination. : D They all seem like they're standing around, I'd love to see your characters in action, a few more dynamic poses. :)

Nice rendering and designs. Material texturing is looking sweet. Don't forget to work on proportion, some of your shins are a bit short, and a lot of them have very small feet.

Great sktches man, your progress is apparent. You've developed your lines, rendering and design. Very cool. :) I've got few advice atm I guess, however a tip would be to explore light some more perhaps. You seem to have created a pattern were you introduce light from above in almost every sketch.
looking forward to more!

Your figures are so cool! Great costume ideas (that's so hard for me to do) and really nicely rendered. Not a lot of messy lines or mistakes being fixed (that I could see at least.) Can't wait to see more.

The only critique I can offer is to maybe start sketching hints of backgrounds and finishing some of the figures. These are just sketches, though, so maybe that's unnecessary. Dunno.

Thanks for commenting in my SB...I hate you haha, your SB is amazing, that first oil painting was nice. I love your characters.

Your inspired? lol

Dude your stuff is like a slap in the face... your economy of line is striking me, and a great grasp of anatomy and naturalistic posing. Don't even have a clue how you do it. =)

Very scary skill, now, I go to draw. PS, i wish people on my class beat my ass as much as you =P

Wow you have talent! I really like the tightness of your renderings. Also, you seem to have a nice imagination when coming up with characters. All in all great work!

Just one things, get away from claw hands syndrome.. not good. Or at least spice them up, not hard to achieve something different with hands imo, just gotta put as much thought into them as the rest of the design.

Sweet pencils though matey, maybe some enviro's?

The shading is as sweet as usual >3.
And I can see you're trying to experiment various poses more often, just keep it up~~ it will be worthwhile .

Hey man, Awsome drawingsrealy love your style, simple and elegant, and your anatomy is imroving rapedly! One question, is it just me or do you never draw abs, almost all your rendered male characters have some sort of armor/clothing covering their stomachs?
ps: I realy dig your oil paintings, very good!

Hey there Dadaushin. On this sixth page a few of your characters exhibit some small heads in relation to their bodies, same for the feet which tend to be small and pointy (the last one might just be a preference). A lot of your characters seem static, facing towards the viewer and not doing much. It'd be interesting if you drew them from all sides to reveal their side and back anatomy/costume designs. Or place them in action poses to work those particular imagination muscles.

February 13th, 2008, 09:59 AM

Soja- hey thanks for the comments!

Occidental_Martyrm, ~Faust~- thanks guys

aph- yea i should work on them more, i think its because they started as really quick and then i just rendered it mindlessly haha, hands...my weakness

Unsharpened- thanks for the encouragement

elihanselman- thanks and i can't wait either! haha

D@niel- hmm i don't know, i guess i do always put armor there haha, theres a hint of abs in the last one though..

thesadpencil- hey thanks, i'm picking up the brushes again and i'm kinda waiting to get a wacom and color digitally

kakapoopie- haha thanks

Eon- i usually like the small features but i do push it to far sometimes, i do do turn arounds once in awhile, not really in my sketchbook though i guess i should post them. picked up a new anatomy book to help me with the muscles : )

Clodioz- thanks man, i'm doing more haha

I have been following you since day one, and as most of the threads i watch ive been happy to see alot of progression.
Although i dont know what you go to school for, i think you should begin to push yourself. You have a grasp on basic anatomy, and rendering. Now play with it. Mess around with texture and contrast, maybe more line weight. Definitally start to mess around with more body types and poses, right now they are natural, but not as expressive as I think you could make them. This just how i see it and what i think, take it or leave it < :) >

Overall I believe that in whatever field you choose to enter (may it be art or otherwise) you will go far.

Oh btw another thing you should try is a sitting down and making a figure that expresses the emotion you are feeling at that time, or the one you had during the duration of the day(try to limit the word use). This will inhance your illustration capabilites quickly. Take with a grain of salt or just ignore it haha.

Either way you are a star(5 of them in fact) on the rise. It has been a pleasure watching

Hello dadushin, you draw and shade very nicely! but, your characters are bit stiff, they don't kind of go into motion or relaxed poses. This is really hard to achieve (i am struggling with it propably years to come) but i think this might be the area you really should concentrate more

keep posting anyway!

Fun, I really enjoy your pencil sketches. A lot of really neat designs and you draw figures with a really light touch that works really well. I wish I could read your notes around the people sitting on the train. I always jot notes in my sketchbooks even when I draw on the computer. It is always fun reading them because it adds a further personal touch.

Looking forward to keeping an eye on your thread.

I am unbelievable crazy about your style!! I view most of your scetches as finished works. I've always enjoyed an unfinished look in drawing as I believe the fresh movement and structure of scetchbook lines and contours add so much more to a piece than completed, smooth coloring ever could.

Hey dude! You should give us an update man.. like the favourite sketch from the last month? Come on... only takes 5 minutes to do .. go go go!

Study some feet! and their proportion in relation to other stuff .. seems to be a sore spot. Keep pushing man, some great stuff in the last post.
