Looking good so far man.
You might want to look for a tutorial on drawing faces ( Just google it I guess ). It will help you get the proportions correct when your drawing faces.
For example: http://www.rabbitprince.com/tutorials_art/face.html
Though there are probably better diagrams/tutorials than that but that gives you the basic proportions.
Keep it coming :D

You have skill in rendering. I like how you got the tones for the halo drawings.
You were asking about how I did the grids in my sketchbook. I used the perspective tool in Manga Studio to make them. Of course you can do the same in Photoshop especially with the path line tools.
Keep practicing and posting :teeth:

Hey man, I'm really glad your interested in improving :)
You can download the Loomis drawing books in PDF format, they are free :D Get them here:

Theres one on figure drawing and another one that seems to be on heads and hands. Check them out. The Loomis books are used heaps here.
Good luck!

Thanks for dropping by my SB :), you asked me about digital painting but I don't think you should focus on it yet. For now your problem lies in the construction of your figures, heads, etc. It's good to see you've got the loomis books so go through Figure Drawing For All Its Worth first then move onto Drawing The Head and Hands afterwards. Also picking up the Vilppu drawing manual wouldn't be a bad idea either, it'll focus on using primitive 3D shapes as means of a base construction. Also, when working from the loomis stuff, etc. REALLY TAKE IT IN, don't just copy it or you're gonna be wasting your time :) I started doing Figure drawing for all its worth when I was 16-17 and I can tell you that I wasted my time a lot because I just copied the muscles without thinking about how they are as a mass and possibly how they function individually. Also do you have a tablet? If you do and you want to do a little digital painting, read the 'how to digi paint in photoshop' threads, etc. for a basic idea for now. Also, there are no real 'techniques' or anything, heck I pretty much only use 2 brushes in Painter IX which is what I use to digi paint. But anyways man just draw as much as possible and keep at it and you'll get to where you wanna go :) Some cool stuff here also heheh :D

Hm...For that photo referenced drawing - spend more time with the line and get it as exact as possible before you do any shading otherwise it wont look good no matter how much shading or color you use. On the eyes try using a horizontal guide line to get them facing the same way and be on the same level. Just keep drawin!!

Keep practicing your digital painting but I think your main focus should be on basic anatomy and rendering. I know it's boring but any work you put into it now will pay off big time later.
BTW I really think you pencil shading looks great!

You have some nice stuff in here, and your heads are improving. Going along with what EtherRain and lewisaurus said, practice your anatomy, but don't just copy the muscles. I find The Human Machine by George Bridgeman a really good book for that. It talks about how the muscles work, and I think you should look into it. Once you have the foundations down, it'll easily translate onto the digital medium.

hey man thanks for dropping by my book, i gotta say i love how you practice so much, that's definitely the way to go. about your digitals, i suggest to stay away from that a little longer, you can only paint what you can understand, so it would be better to learn about all the underlying structure first, you know, face anatomy and things like that. once you got that down, you know what you need to look for and everything will be much easier. keep it up :)

Wasai, you are good at drawing helmets - I love it!
But as other mentioned - keep practicing anatomy, one tip is to mark out places before you actually begin to draw for real (Hope you understand what I mean) :) It's easier to draw a picture with a right proportion.
I've seen you made some good practice, but I would like to see them in use :)
Keep it up!

umm i really wana relearn anatonomy but i need better books, anyone know any good downloadable or any good sites/links to basic proportions of faces and other human parts... and i already have loomis but its kind of too complex to just practice its more for like a prolonged study
Diego
July 17th, 2008, 10:19 PM
Hey man, i took a quick look to your book. You have plenty of stuff going on, that's great. I saw your studying loomis, that's something you should keep at it, definitely. Learn the planes, and how to use the basic shapes to construct your forms and figures, so you'll find more easy to resolve the different angles and positions of the head, like the one above.
About the anatomy books, i guess loomis is great for proportions, anatomy, basic shapes, but you can complement it with gottfried bammes which i guess is way more complex than loomis, paul richer for anatomy plates or maybe Burne Hogarth. You should give it a try and see what you can learn.
from what you have in your hands.

SoufMeng
July 25th, 2008, 12:25 AM
some one teach me how to paint fur
Lol, No one is actually able to teach u that, except yourself!
The fur in ur last painting is way to hard-edged!!
I know that when u look at a cat for instance u see billions of little hard edged hairs but as an artist u've got to bow down to nature and try to synthesize what u see to make it recognizable to the viewer as best as u can!
Try to paint fur from life or photo (http://www.dalkeithcattery.co.uk/uploads/images/articles/15.jpg) and im sure ull learn alot.
Also, looking at how other artists u like do it, is a very good thing.
For instance look at how D.Sillustration rendered that teddy bear (http://www.conceptart.org/?artist=DSillustration).
The paintings from imagination are the result of creativity having fun with the different "files" u have in ur visual library.
Obviously if ur library is empty, then painting from imagination will hardly be succesful for u.

TOOLED!
July 26th, 2008, 11:18 AM
alright demo here it is. first of all, good effort. i forget who said it but it goes something like this, in your life as an artist you'll probably have a thousand bad pieces but the key to becoming a great artist depends on you getting those pieces out of your system. i have lived by this over the past couple of years. esentially it comes to practice, practice like you there's no tomorrow. all this stuff will snap into place and one day you'll be like "damn, i have grown so much as an artist".
as for a crit, lots of your stuff has potential, but lacks experience and technical ability =more studies and more drawing. when you do studies *don't stop looking at what you drawing*. you can see it the easiest in the painting you did of that girl in the photo. i can see where you weren't looking and where you were. painting in gray scale might help to, it's pretty hard to be focusing on ten things like painting color composition etc etc at once so why not minimize it. and also do some master studies they will help so much with colors. now to leave on a good note, the car study you did is great. lighting is good and the minimalist rendering is very accomplished. gj. later, and i hope this helps.

your work shows A LOT of promise. i can tell you like digging in and working on details. thats always a good thing. however, you need to work more on developing good forms, some of them look awkward. a good way to go: general to particular. in other words, basic forms to super details...without to within.
the best practice is drawing from life. just keep drawing.
rock on dude!

welcome to our small but nice sketchbooksupportgroup! keep updating and practising continously and become great!
i *really* like the painting of the old theatre, the colours are rich and beautiful!
for your other studies it's great to see that you started to look at the underlying structures more! keep that up! those noses look really good!
for my taste your digi paintings rely to much on fancy effects, how about trying to paint with a good ole' round pressure sensitive brush only for one piece. just to try out if you can pull of a good picture without using fx.
show us more!

This is a bit late, but welcome to SSG 50!
You have very strong shading, and I see you are improving, very nice. I agree with Katinki, don't rely on special effect stuff, I didn't quite understand the purpose of it in your post 20, I thought the portrait by itself without the special effect was nice. I liked post 19 better.

do you work froma photo or from imagination? if you have ref - could you post it next to it? and watch out for the neck's muscle structure - it's off. the eyes aren't symmetrical: the right eye is too far up and too near to the nose.

Big picture!:yum: Lots of work and detail into the grasshoppers. I like the reflection in the eye. In the future, if you have to stitch multiple scans together, take some time to adjust the levels or brightness or whatever. One way that I've found is to adjust the transparency of a layer a little so you get things lined up, then return to normal and make the other adjustments. How big was this?
Very good hands. I like the cross-hatching. The eyes are good overall, good construction. But that last set comes off stylized and close together. (of course, if stylized is the goal, forget what I say.)

I think it's an even mix of good and could be better. I think the weakest are the top right and second left in the first set. The fingers seem disjointed, like they aren't connected at the knuckles. If you can, come back to that one again and see if you get any improvement.
katinki
September 26th, 2008, 01:44 PM
hey! great to see you working!
your hatching looks really good! but on the last hand sheets i get the impression that it covers anatomical and structural problems. i would recommend to do some hands without excessive hatching, concentrating on form and structure.
keep it up!

Hi. Your studies are getting better. Don't worry, sometimes things just go wrong like with that hand but that can be helpful too. Your industrial design is looking really good and all of the "single parts" (ears, noses etc) are great.
Seems to be getting iffy if you put the pieces together though. :)
But maybe more gesture drawing of whole figures will help to understand how these parts relate to each other.
Hope that makes sense. (Great pencils btw.) :)

Hi there! sorry for not replying for a long time
I see a lot of improvement here! Love the hand studies (albeit...the wrist and the knuckles are too short or the fingers are too long, but that's what studies are for, right? :) )
And there's a lot of interesting design! ^^

I really, really like the mural. I can't critique on how to improve it because it is so abstract, but there's still the recognizable human shape in it. And it's what your clients wanted, so that's a bonus.
katinki
September 30th, 2008, 06:01 PM
cool! does mural mean that you'll paint it at a real wall somewhere? what was your exact task?
the colours look a bit randomly placed. have you had any thoughts behind your choices? i think especially for such abstract stuff compostion and colour theory becomes even more important.
i'm curious how the finished work will look like!

September 30th, 2008, 10:36 PM
well the murals are for a hospital kind of retirement thing and they added new wings to the bulding one of which was a better gym/ sports center thing.
they sent me a bunch of simple clip art things but i really didnt like them to much just felt like i was ripping some one off so i abstracted the figures a little bit not too much. when i sat down with the people i showed some sketches and they just kind of told me to do what i want but keepit pretty simple. the Green and purple are the colours of the walls and carpet they wanted the whole thing in those colors but i thought they would blend too much with the walls so i changed them. they werent really excited for me to paint on the walls so i talk about using a digital medium which they took a fancy too because they can move emm around need be and keep backed up copies. thats about it i dont think they covered every thing so any thig else just say so. o yah this is 1 out of 5 the others i think will be like a bycicle, lifter, maby 2 more yoga poses idk any ideas
Update they didnt like how it was broken up so the mead me join emm
i really dont like these keeping things simple is not something im good at

the mask has a very cool design, the asymmetry works very well!
the mural sounds like a very interesting project!
i think the current piece suffers from lack of decision! do you want to go really abstract - then go! or do you want to have a comic style figure - then make it really comic-y! or do you want a recognizable human shape? then add some anatomy and make arms not tubes! and whichever route you go - why does the figure wear a helmet? not that a helmet is a bad thing just think *why*!

Those are very good still lives of the fruits. I guess the weakest part of the apple is the deepest part of the cast shadow, in that it could be painted more smoothly. But that's a minor critique.
katinki
October 12th, 2008, 03:07 PM
hey - nice to see some still lives from you!
those are a great start! i'd recommend to concentrate on the exact colour picking and conveying volume first and not before finishing those stages start adding texture and details. your textures look great but the base isn't as strong. and try to switch to greyscale from time to time to check your value range - you could use a lot darker darks!
keep 'em comming!

- the inside of the pepper looks very detailed and pepper-y! the stick looks weaker and i don't think your framing is very fortunate.
- the embroidery is just soo cool!
- the selfportait's hands look good but the face lacks structure
- the watercolour leaves are amazing! dunno, perhaps the purple background is a bit much
- the grasshoppers are pretty amazing too, i'd never ever have the patience to shade something like this!
and now - more sketches and studies please!

Good job on the studies. The hands are coming along, nice to see them from so many angles. As Kat said, try to keep anatomy in mind; may help a bit on tricky poses. The noses are coming along well, but the lips seem a little overly simplified. The second one is really good, but the last two or three rub me.

What is up with the crack? It looks like the kind of crack you'd seen in something hard, like rock. If you're going for more of a scar or cut, maybe look at photo refs of wounds, or similar result, theatrical make-up. The jacket is coming along well. As for putting in a dead Rogue, I would advise against it. This is supposed to be a portrait of you as the character Gambit.

Yo dude. A lot of improvement since I last checked in. Your later more traditional works are looking great. I especially like your self-portrait with the pop heads, there's something psychedelic about it and I really like the colours you used to render it.
Cool fucking mask!!! That's really rad. Haven't seen anybody do masks on here yet. Very cool stuff.
Though you have been doing more anatomy studies, you definitely need to be doing more and more and more. Your digital painting can also use more time. Try painting "slower", try to be more careful, be a little more patient and spend lots of time on it. If a painting has to take up to month for you to think its perfect then you do it! Art is art man, sometimes shit takes long, sometimes not.
Keep rockin it dude!

great diverse update! not bad for six weeks!
quick comments on all the pieces:
- the girl's dress is just great! all those folds! but the hands are wrong, the fingers are too long and the palms are too small. and whatch out for the eyes!
- both skeleton studies are beautifully rendered! i love the watercolour texture and the colours you chose. anatomy-wise the scapulas should only go down to about the middle of the ribcage as a rule of thumb.
- the mentler rip-off looks very mentler-y. it's always interesting to try to copy a certain style.
- the abstract one is too busy for me. abstract works need a extra strong composition! lead my eye! (and avoid tangents!)
- the guy on the ladder - wow that's colourful. i can't really look at it for longer but it's interesting for sure!

Hi there! Long time no see xD;Sorry I haven't been on yours for so long..
I see a lot of improvement on your art, that's great! For the last pic, I like how you drew them, how detailed the laces are, and the can's reflection is well depicted :) The only problem I have is perhaps that the shape looks tilted. But other than that, I think that looks great :D
and I like the coloring for the tentacle. It's great! The lighting looks very pretty and the texture is very detailed. If I have to complain, it would be that the sea looked...bright. Which, seeing the distance between the bottom of the sea and the ship, probably shouldn't. Or maybe the light's too bright, although I can understand it from aesthetic PoV.
I would love to see more of you ^^~ Good luck !

Asatira: Thanks for the honest truth iv had that problem for a long time, trying to get my sketches to look less cartoonish not that i don't like cartoons but theirs a time and a place and its not for when i want something to look real, any who im ranting thanks. Still got that eye problem. I can't really suggest any color theory books, but Loomis does cover it in one of his books. I think it's the one about illustration. You may want to look through the informative threads, and maybe check out http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com, he goes over a number of topics in his blog.

That's a solid amount of work brother.
On your digital paintings, you're doing a bit of over-modelling. try more subtle blends, so there is less of a 3D plastic look.
Great improvement, seriously.

The last two are much better. The first is much smoother than earlier ones, and the B&W one just works, I think because the tones are limited and you have to be more clear. Also, can't have waste with too small brushstrokes.

Hey Demo, keep working on your selfportraits, andthose anatomy studies.
Your faces seem like you spent more time on the construction lines than the actual portrait, try a few sessions with minimal construction, and instead just paint exactly what you see as you see it. 100% opacity and flow, blend all on one layer. Might help you out.

The thumbnails are good, but your Degas study could be better. Even as a general color study, the squiggly brush strokes tend to break up the figures more than they need to be. It took a moment the first time I saw it to recognize it as the ballerinas and not a bunch of shapes.

For some of your face studies don't be afraid to blend the tones together. Some of them look really stark. Use the pure white sparely as highlights or looks like it's being hit by a flood light.
Your anatomy studies are coming out great.

very cool man, geting better, goooood pencils keep those up, I like an sp painting and environs. You say you need to work on textures and lines on environments, on my opinion you should pay more attention to color, COLOR is the primary thing. Try painting only with a big brush on your photo studies, that should keep you away from small details and you would care much more of the colour. Thats for my advices :D dont stop man and ull become awsome, good luck :D

Keep studying! I think you could try painting less complicated still lifes when ur studying colour. I found that if i have lots of objects to paint in one picture and when i fail with one of that objects i just give up on other ones and want to finish the piece faster. I suggest try sometimes to set a still-life only from one object and some kindof background, that shouldnt mess ur mind so much than a bigger amount of things. For example: Bring a lemon on a blue drapery, and study the shit out of it, try your hardest to mix colours as they are, reflection of the drapery on the lemon, hues, contrasts, lightening, make a very simple picture but realistic.
Thats for my pointers :D I need to go back to school now...

holy shit you've done a hell of a lot since i last checked your sketchbook. haha thanks for making me feel like a slacker. I really dig your AP portfolio. A lot of interesting stuff, some really strong pieces in there.
What I notice a lot in this page is how frustrated you are with your digital still lives. Your traditional still life paintings are really strong and show your sensitivity to color and light. Maybe you should think about what made the trad ones strong and the digital ones not so strong. I have a feeling it's a really simple, fixable problem like you putting too much thought into your digital ones and not getting that flow going, or that you have a limited palette to work with when you're using trad paints. Whatever it is, find out and fix it! You're totally capable of a great looking still life, as we can see in your ap folio and around your sketchbook. Just tap into that skill when you open photoshop. :D
P.S. What kind of sketchbook did you use in the last post? ..Or are those the rings of a MASSIVE 18x24 pad? D:

Bapsi Thanks Bapsi thats some great advice right their, i agree its totally fixable so i beter get fixing. thats some of the fun with photoshop and some of the problem its kind of so overwhelming that you have to find that right flow you get with traditional to really get your bearings ...if that makes sense.
Pijus normally i would unconditionally accept your challenge for an update battle..buutttt ill be starting a summer job so let me figure out how much time i need to put in their before we start anything epic but i promise by this Sunday well start going at it.

Nice bridgemen studies, I like how you experiment with pencil and inks to mix things up a bit with them.
For the textures on the environ. There's a dirty little secret you can scan in real paint strokes and overlay them over the digital painting. Try to focus on getting the values first then think of color and time of day. Example if sunny outside and the lighting is yellow then in the shadows there would a hint of blue and purple.
Try not to use colors straight out of the tube, it mighttake away from your hard work unless you want o more impressionistic kind of look.

Hey Gabe( I really hope Im not mistaken about your real name). Big update dood, very good. I can say ur bridgman studies looks pretty good. Your pencil lines gone awesome man. Keep up working. :)
Now with the eye thing.
Its understandable that you havent noticed your eyes proportions, becouse the smallest fault of proportion measurement makes big differences. You will improve that by practice and it will become natural to make it right in the future. I think the most importantly you need to pay attention that the gap between the eyes is one eye lenght Here Ill try to show you your mistakes, and in the right I tryed to fix things up a bit :D
Picture1 (http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm277/opijus/portrait-failCA-1.jpg)
Picture2 (http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm277/opijus/Finished-portrait-green.jpg)
Though in the Picture2 the mistake is less recognisable i still wanted to make more examples for you.
I truly hope I helped
Sorry for my pour language.
Take care
