I never understood about the twist and turns of the torso well until I studied bridgemen. I think you got it!

That's great you are experimenting with skin tones. Even if the skin tones happen to be different from your own skin value while you paint. You can always take mental notes on those color combinations for other projects.

Good work of late man!

The self portraits are going good. Nice sense of light you've got going on, and the brush strokes are sweet as!

And great Bridgman studies as well, fantastic rhythm and your lines are looks awesome!

Keep at it mate,

Wow, there is some dramatic improvement in this thread.

These last portraits look ok, although it seems (correct me if I'm wrong) like you start them on one area and work from there... you could get better proportions if you got the shape of the head, the perspective and the place of the features down first.

Your portfolio looks awesome =)

Amanda C Thanks Amanda thats really helpful i feel like sometimes i can get the features down but over all the shape of the head still confusedness me :ore: Ill try working painting the head all at once instead of focusing on one area and working out

JailHouseRock2Thanks :asspat:

Pigeonkill Thank u Pigeon although im getting good color sense from doing these portraits i still don't think its helping the cionstruction process so perhaps ill have to look else where to figure that out.

Finaly an update, awesome sketch book pages and anatomy studies, keep up with loomis, it helps alot, I know it helped me. Maybe try shading those heads after linework (even if its not shaded in loomis drawings) it will help you understand and memorize planes better. Well it helps me. Keep up. Ill be waiting for another update.

Dude, I really like where your life drawing is going. The angular style merging with a loose softer style is really nice. Reminds me a little of the old masters. It's cool to see how far you've come by going through your sketchbook. Keep it up and thanks for swinging by mine! I like how this one is going. I wouldn't mind a nice castle on top of the hill along with people. The small stair like structures at the base caught my eye a bit.

That's a sweet looking engine and yummy reference material.

It took me a while to get into Loomis too. What got me even more interested in his work is when I read that Loomis was told to go home from art school because they felt he wasn't good enough. He turned around and worked hard not only to prove to he could do it, but share his knowledge to improve the industry.

Pijus :O ill get right on that Loomis study in chocolate, and i also got Whits downloads on environments i was a little disappointed to see that non of em were that concepty but their still really cool and valuable to learn from. im really not enjoying my enviroments..or really much of any of my digital work soo far its all so far from being what i want it il tryto explain more in my next post.

Hookswords thanks its getting better but i still have lots to learn. i loved all those photos i think its completly amazing i also saw a you tube video that was doe in the same style it was worth a look at if i see it all drop t in ur book.

Pigeonlol id work on that more but it was just a small study and it served its purpose i think those are rice pattys btw. and thanks iv also read that about Loomis im not saying hes not god or anything but it seems like his stuff dosnt have much expression or anything dynamic going on with it but still ill pick it back up

Heres a painting i started on. mainly set up the composition.blocked in the color and i started going back and putting all the buildings back in 3d AND sent them into photoshop because my line work wasn't adequate ..ummm iv got along way to go and i need to figurer out this female figure and get the skin tone right.

Well art school really sucks so far if had to deal with, robbery's, shootings, harassment, and probably anything else you can think of, why cant people just focus on their art instead of hatred. Despite all the crap Iv got a few god professors and their really diving in to the basics of art so hopefully that works out.

I never painted with too much oils. I used water water soluble ones before, they are nice. Easier for clean up and less chemicals. One techique that was taught to me was painting a thin coat of burn sierra or burnt umber on the canvas and then wipe away the high lights with cloth. So you end up using less paint. I assume it be done with normal oils or any other color.

The car perspective is looking to me. I think the TAD is nice but also some mix reviews.

You've got some good effort going into these studies. Remember to stick with the basics and keep how you think of everything really simple. In your speedpaints of environments I'd really recommend you slow down and really spend a few hours and try to understand whats going on with the light in the pictures. When you first learned how to shade basic spheres im sure you didn't do a whole bunch of really sloppy ones, you have to take the time to understand it first, and then you grind on it. Keep working at it, it'll get easier.

Heya Demo!! :D I love how you use so many mediums, and you use them all really well! You have so much going on I don't know what to comment on first! lol It's all great. I really like your oil paintings and renderings.
On the poll I voted anatomy/bone studies because I think that that's what you can benefit from most. I'll stop on by later ;)

Dorkthrone

I like that you're using a lot of mediums. I would personally work on your line use. Your figures tend to be a little flat.

odiolitos
August 16th, 2010, 08:30 PM
Hi there!

Man, i totally feel your pain: I went to art school too, and I just wish I'd had more live drawing and less arty- farty stuff... Anyway, let's get to things.

I've noticed your portraits are gradually coming together and looking convincing, but there's a tiny little things that I don't quite like: the eyes. They look a bit too big, like you're putting too much effort on them, trying to make them expressive. That's fine, as long as they're in proportion. I'd say just forget they're eyes, and draw them as basic shapes. Then step back and see if you got the expression you wanted. If not, at least you've got the proportions right, and you can work from there. And hey, everything else in them looks fine and dandy, and this is just my opinion, so take it w/ a pinch of salt...

I agree with Ninjacat that you should maybe put some more work on plain linework to try and make the figures stand out more and have a better base from which to build volume and stuff. But hey, I'm the line- only guy, so maybe that's me :)

Keep it up, dude, 'cause it sure is going somewhere nice!

andres333
September 4th, 2010, 09:55 AM
why does that poll say that you should work more on anatomy??? I know that anatomy is important but that's not gonna solve all your problems, in fact right now that ain't gonna solve anything at all. I think you should do gesture studies, and you'll definitely see an immense progress.

HolyBovine
September 6th, 2010, 06:00 AM
Agreed.. you should probably try more expression and suggestion in your drawings, since it looks like you have a pretty strong anatomy foundation to work on. Quick 30 second gestures, lots of them, will definitely help you in that. And I think you could try different expressions / emotions for your portraits.

Looks good, with the potential to be even better. Keep going =)

I decided to just answer everyone at once so sorry next time ill be better about specific replies, I should be able to post again almost every day now that my life's a little more back under-control ;)
As for comments about the poll and anatomy, the poll was introduced like 2-3 years ago I cant take it down i would if i could. And at no point have I stopped working on any of those things, Yes anatomy will fix things it would be absolutely foolish to believe other wise, and gesture of a figure would be a subset of anatomy. I do have a ridiculousness amount of gesture work but its super tedious to post and really not to much worth it, I don't necessarily have the time to post 500 pages of 15 second drawings, don't hate me for it, just love me :P

Now that's an update. I like the anatomy studies and bones structure is pretty solid.

Is that gold paint or gold foil in your sketchbook?

In your traditional paintings. It looks a bit muddy. I would try to avoid the blacks and whites. You can do a lot with just burnt sierra or umber. You can just paint a canvas in light umber wash. Let it dry slight and take wet brush and erase the paint and white shows through.

Nick Trip:Thank you Nick

Pigeonkill: Thanks Pigeonkill the gold is glued on gold flake you can go to pretty much any general art store and find either shredded up gold, silver or such or you can buy it in sheets, I bought this marker so i can keep it all stuffed in my backpack and play with it during classes. As for the muddyieness mehh Rembrandt studies my professor said to start with black and muddy colors and work to lighter and saturation so it probably is just that in combination with the unfinishedness.

Dleoblack: Thank you.

Rain Walker: Unfortunately I probably wont go into either of those oils any further, but thank you none the less!!

RSloan: Thank you.

Anyways some more school work from the last show First one was bought by the school, unfortunately I did not get great photos before handing it over.
After that a few ceramic pieces, lots of other studies a Priemevera, a Mucha, some still lifes, portrait, then sketchbook pages.

Also big news I received a pretty big Grant from my school which will cover some very nice large paintings (ONE LIGHT BOX!!!) and what not for a show in October. So
I will sneak updates in here hopefully everyday.

I've had a nice journey through your SB. You drawing has improved a lot from the start, but you've lost some of the joy of colours that you once had. I'd love to see that back.

Hi Demo

Thanks for the SB visit, I have been back through your book and have come to the conclusion that ........ well I have a hell of a long way to go yet!

I liked the heads you did way back in post 274 of your book, they started out kinda vague and built up to a finished image I dont quite do it like that, my opening lines are thin and spidery, not as confident LOL.

All the best and thanks again for the input

with the anatomy studies, one important thing to do is to understand the superficial muscle groupings. Sometimes its not enough to just know them observationally. But you must also follow up all your studies with repetition of drawing the musculature from memory. Even if it's wrong the process of correcting an error is more conducive to learning often than simply copying.

#315 looks pretty trippy with the light effects.

#318 I actually like the lighting and girls face more than the updated version. Only suggestion on previous update was the girls eyes seems a bit intense and the hair look thickly greased rather than fluffy and loose hair.

Keep pushing those graphic designs and car mods :)
