work on bringing more to the forums and id like to see some figures from u.

November 4th, 2007, 10:35 AM
i like most the top left one and the gray one in the middle :)
Edit: also the one in the bottom could work very well as a classic scifi book cover. You know, the one where the space explorers are stranded on a hostile planet, full of predatory vegetation and the explorers try to fend of the dangerous things...
But if you decided to finish the top left. Could you make it so that theres one in the foreground, but i really think it would look cool if there was a swarm of them a little further back.. i think they would look cool in a swarm.. long limbs everywhere.. :3
Edit2: but but dont put too much faith in my opinion. im not really that good yet ;)

Hey Ookchk, Some nice thumbs you got here.
I'd like to see either the 4 eyed gecko thing, or the tentactle mollusk takne further, they look kick ass.
Good luck.

Thanks for the comments guys! I'll keep your suggestions in mind for sure :)
And now, since I don't wanna post something art-less, here is my update for today: I actually did this a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't shown it here so I might as well. C&C Appreciated!!

Really like those last two posts, great feel of character about them, especially the guy. The feet on the female are the only thing that seem a little at odds with her otherwise graceful stance, I'd somehow expect them to be more slender, but that could just be me!

What else have I been up to.. hmm..
The first one is just an hour-long speedie.. the second one is a "thank-you" for reaching 10,000 pageviews on DeviantART. There's lots of anatomy no-nos in that second piece, but honestly it was more an exercise in painting OVER lines instead of under them.
What say you, brigands!!!

hehe Bartelby Arrow has some interesting costume designs i like the one on the send to the right costume. you definately have some interesting sketches i'm not too fond of some of your photoshop pictures. i think its the anatomy issues on the face. try doing some foundation studies for the face because i think that is one of the things you need to work on.
KarylGilbertson
March 27th, 2008, 06:08 PM
@ Maerrick: Do you mean the last one in particular, or all of them? I am in that awkward stage between realism and stylization... and I can't decide quite which way I want to go. I will certainly try to do some studies though.. I could certainly do with a better understand of facial forms and structure.

Hey guys, I'm back. I promise I haven't been slacking, I just don't always take the time to jump on CA and upload stuff :)
Crits would really be appreciated on these ones.. these are for a personal illustration, and one I would like to bring to a "finished" stage. The first one was the first attempt, which started out without a real concept and then was abandoned. The second attempt is what I'm working on now.. some futuristic airship pilot character.

Hey Karyl. She still needs more volume on her rib cage and you rounded her bottom nicely but then her shirt doesn't seem to follow this curve outward. Her right arm is very tubular, something weird is going on with where it connects to her shoulder. Anatomy before renderfest!

Here's today's update... I didn't feel like working on my airship pilot tonight. So I did something else.. I've been looking at William Whitaker's work a lot lately, I am trying to get better at lighting and re-teach myself how to draw/paint faces.

April 18th, 2008, 10:10 PM
I took a couple days off from updating because I've been quite busy, and while I've managed to squeeze in some painting every day, I didn't want to bore you folks with a deluge of tiny, almost un-noticeable changes. But here's the latest version of my airship pilot: I've gotta render a couple areas, but then it's just touch-ups and it's done!
KarylGilbertson
April 21st, 2008, 04:59 PM
A little deviation from the standard TV programming: I took a break from rendering my little illustration and did this, from reference I grabbed from Flickr (I love that place). Though it's obviously not even close to done, I'm not sure if I'll ever go back into this, as it was only ever intended as a study anyway. I'll just give it to you as is, for now.
C&C are always appreciated! I'm getting lonely.. :P

The piece from April 19th is sweet. Can't wait to see the final version. Nice concept. The last portrait is nice, but the eyes seem very slightly mis-matched. Is the right eye higher than the left? It's something I commonly do myself, so I can't really hold it against you. You have a nice sense of colour, I really like your pieces.
KarylGilbertson
April 21st, 2008, 08:46 PM
@ donalfall: Thanks mate! And right you are-- her eyes are off. I hadn't noticed that! Mind you, I like to think that had I continued to work on it, I might've caught that. But I didn't. Thanks again!

Wow, some sweet work in here. I like how the painting is turnign out from the 19th, and i think the flickr reff is wonderful, has a nice charm, even if her eye is a little out. I am jelous of your ability to paint :)

You have some very nice work here! :) Keep it up. In terms of you airship pilot, its looking good, but she has some issues with her left shoulder and butt. The shoulder *I think* is too far over but don't hold me to it. It looks as though you balanced the shoulders by where you placed the spine without consideration of the perspective that you are seeing her at. I love the colours in it though.
The refed girl in the last post has a really nice feeling to it. There's nothing wrong with studies!

@humanNature: Thanks mate!
@Pixe Trick: she certainly has some issues... I've had problems with her but since the get-go... I don't know if I know HOW to fix it. I'm glad you like the colours! I think I struggle with that, and I'm trying to improve, so maybe it's working :)
Reject-D
April 22nd, 2008, 11:20 PM
i think waht could help you out is higher contrasts.. for more depth and more expression for the picture use darker colors and lighter spots.. for example the cyborgish girl.. add more highlights for more effect and darken the shadows where the light will cast.. please excuse the sloppyness... i was typing fast and im very tired..
anyways besides that i think you got some good paints coming along!! nice perspectives as well..
if you could stop by my sb and give it a big long crit that would be tight!!
KarylGilbertson
April 22nd, 2008, 11:26 PM
Haha, can you tell I'm loitering on the forums right now?!
@Reject-D: Thanks for the crit! I agree with you, I could definitely benefit from more contrast in my work.. but I used to be even worse! hehe :P Anyways, you're certainly right, and thanks for pointing it out, I'll continue to work on it! :)
And I can certainly be persuaded to peruse some sketchbooks.. :)

Hey, I thought that I'd check your stuff out after you stopped by my sketchbook. If you don't mind I think I'll offer a bit of constructive criticism. I like your sketches but your paintings look stiff. I think a bit of it may have to do with you don't seem to be working color into the modeling of forms. What I mean is that everything seems to be variations in value of it's local color. There aren't really other colors being worked in the the shadows or highlights. Except for the purple and yellow portrait above. That's my 2 cents.

I like the straightforward, iconic feel you've got going. It all looks pretty friendly and "heroic." You've got a lot of bases covered, too, with the sci-fi and wizards and even kinda romantic comedy with a couple of them. Some really dynamic and energetic action might be something to try. A lot of these characters look like they enjoy fighting bad guys.

Same as demo, this is my first time in here since... well since the last time. It's great to see your work moving forward. I love your sketch work and pages of design and thumbnails.
One thing I notice is your gestures on these sketch pages, have tonnes of movement and character in their silhouette, but your larger final figures become somewhat stiff.
I wish I could offer a solution, but I do the same thing, in fact I do it a lot worse than you do, but I thought any crit I could give may be of some help.
Can't wait to see more.

OOk drawing in the vac. sucks no question...sorry to hear that's the case
-as far as the design: it's clean...simple repro...nice graphic quality to it...get's the job done...nice work...
-if I had to question anything though I would tighten the edges/lines a bit more (really play up the graphic angle) and give a definite place to the white areas showing in the robot...but that's just clean up work..
keep doing your thing!!!

Haha. I found you, Karyl!
I like the colors in the one you posted on July 5th (headshot of a guy). The skin tone seems natural. Its glowy.
The bluegreeny speedpaint landscape (I know its not finished but):
I dont think you haev enough atmospheric perspective yet. Your clouds, which are lovingly rendered, are kind of the most detailed at this point, and they should be furthest away! I would make them much softer. Since you have 3 of them, you could also use them to show depth, making them 3 destinct sizes, 3 levels of detail. The furthest cloud could be quite fadey and close to the color of the sky. You could also push the mountains back with more of a blue or purple blue, and I would get rid of the scratchy lines on them. Those ones look equally, if not more contrasty than the city/mountains in front of them, and they should drop back.
I kind of want to see some huge dark shadows on the structure, maybe even casting one too. It's big, the underside of it is definitely going to be dark.
Where's your light source?
Your composition is also kind of steady... its broken into thirds, but they're all equal thirds. Which one do you want to be dominant?
Cool stuff!

I had this idea, where doing a few studies based on the various artists I really look up to might let me mentally access what specifically about their work makes me like it so much. Or something. Anyways, the first batch is based on some works of the wonderful Mr. Jason Chan.
I think I was decent at capturing colours (no eyedropper allowed), but the proportions are way off from the originals.

looking back through these and i find myself growing really fondly of how you render your eyes any thing i would say at this point is that these blue stills are coming along great but the last one with the oriental temple the angle seems a little over done iv kind of seen a lot with this angle so mabey play around with it maby drop the camera down and shift the camera over to the righ that way the left hand guy is right by the edge maby just creative thoughts

Hi guys,
I was thinking about my skills, both where I am at and where I want to be. I am thinking that I really need to increase my knowledge of colour and tone, by painting from life. So I've decided to do a still life a day. My immediate goal is to do this for a month for now, and possibly extending that once I see how things go.
Anyways, here's the starter piece!

Thanksgiving (I am Canadian) was a tough day to get any drawing done, between 3 family dinners and having friends in from out of town. This is all I managed to scrape together:

It's marvelous to see some still lifes! The last two look great! Watch the edge of the roll of tape, it's the same as the background and nearly the same as the dispenser .. hilights maybe? Watch the elipses on your potted flowers too.
Gotta love Thanksgiving. So much food you could feed armies at my place. :D Yaaa.... leftovers! :p

@PixieTrick: Thanks for your comment! I definitely got to work on those ellipses, you're right. I don't *quite* agree with the edge of the tape, though.. it did kind of blend in with the background and such, and I was trying to draw what I saw. However I could've probably made the edges sharper, and that would've helped. Thanks again!
Here's tonight's addition.. Ducky! I broke out the analog sketchbook again, and used a real pencil! hehe.. Tones are pretty much what they are on paper, I didn't do any Level adjustments.
Doing still lifes has really laid bare just how much further I have to go to improve... it's harder to hide my shortcomings in style or concept.
Voila!

Downloaded a copy of ArtRage, I have to say it's a lot of fun, though like anything I am experiencing a learning curve.
In other news, I think I am going to have to back off on the "Still Life A Day" thing a little bit. Life threw me the slightest of curve balls and I couldn't get one together for two days. I'm going for three a week, since things probably won't be slowing down any time soon.
Here's todays update and a hand study I did while playing around in ArtRage.

Wow. A big jump in improvement! Yaaa!!!!!!!!!!!! for you. :D One thing that just bugs me is that for the poster (looks really good btw) is that the guy's face isn't underlit like the rest of him. I can see reasons, but I think it makes the top half of him look quite flat as you are eliminating most shadows. And just check out the gal's far arm in post 126. Maybe just try doing that yourself. a lot of great stuff in here! i can see some major improvements.
your character design in post #152 is looking good. i think the lines between the armor are flattening him out a bit, maybe darken the lines as the wrap around his body. and maybe bumping up the saturation on the colored parts that have been rendered. don't give up on it, its a bad ass design!

Nice back-to-basics action! I've been realizing more and more how being out of school and in a production environment has degraded my basic skills at tone and form :S
I think I'd punch some of the darks around the edges, to really push the depth.
Some of the folds look flattened out, or like you can't tell which part is in front of the other, and it might be a matter of just putting a 1 px pure black line in the right place. Yeah, there is no such thing as line in reality, but you aren't recreating reality, you're emulating it. After all, photorealism used to be called trompe l'oeil or whatever, fools the eye. It's not necessarily about literally recreating what is there, but rather finding what makes it look the way it does.
As a pure study, I think the color photo might be confusing you in terms of how light or dark stuff is. You should try converting your ref to greyscale to see where your lighting is off; that spot in the background that is too light at the top is totally throwing off your lighting scheme, because the contrast up there is very low but you are making it seem like it is still in very strong light. But only the middle of the cloth is experiencing that spot light, the top and bottom are fading out a LOT, which is why using the ref for the cloth is making it seem flat there. The eye sees the brightness in the background and wants to see the same contrast occurring in the folds.
Hope that helps!
Pixie Trick
June 4th, 2009, 05:16 PM
Hmmm....
A couple of things to mention for this one.
Look at the outline of your cloth. Assuming your canvas is the same size as the ref, you should be able to compare distances from the edge to where the cloth should be. This is really only a way to tell if you are off, not so much as a way of drawing it. Compare angles and see if they are the same. Is the line from the top of the two gathered areas the same distance and angle apart? On thing that helps me is to imagine a cross of perfectly perpendicular lines over the area I need to work on, and then compare how sharply the line I need to draw is angled in comparison. Everything is relative. A lot of your lengths are off as well. It's mainly training your eye to see small differences.
Another thing in terms of value, is to see the subtle differences in that as well. For example, the fold that does down the right hand side that is very white- it gets slightly darker at the bottom and top, and has little creases all over. If you look at the shadow you have at the very top of this fold as well, you have a very dark shadow. In your ref, is that shadow darker than the one on the wall from that area? Remember that something dark on a white bg will look darker than something dark on a dark bg. Compare your hilights to each other, and your shadows to one another. By the end, it's kind of like those games in newpapers etc. that say "Find the ten things that are different in this pic, from that one." It's a game seeing how well you can imitate life.
If you feel like it, you can try overlaying one on top of the other on low opacity or some other type of blending mode and distinctly see differences that way.
I agree with a.lam in that you don't have to perfectly copy nature to a perfect extent, but you might want to keep in mind that many teachers will keep you from using black for a couple of reasons a) it immediately takes attention away from anywhere you are not using it. This can be used to your advantage however- such as the accentuation of shadows etc. I would suggest using a very dark grey if you were to do this however. b) it is almost never seen in real life. If you go into the colour picker, you know that nearly nothing will be a pure colour in the corner, and that everything is mixed with some grey. Same goes for black.
Also, I think that it is important to be able to calculate values from a colour. You will often see people telling others to put a coloured painting into greyscale to see what it looks like, and if the values are on. If you use colour you need to know value. Doing a b&w from colour, is really just simplifying things for you.
Okay, well this turned into a novel very quickly... oops and sorry. I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say. Anywhooo...just do some more. :P

The drapery studies you've been doing are looking good - it seems like a very good way to get a handle on tone. I like the poster cowboy as well - nice cutout shadows (I wonder if it could be done in just hard black and white). All the little still-life's are good too. Here's another update for today... decided to finish off the work day with a quick landscape study. It kind of sucks, I cut off a whole chunk somehow on the bottom. Ah well, keep on keepin' on I guess...

That reference photo is gorgeous.
I think once again, the color photo is confusing you. In that image, think of there being only 2 colors; the background pink color and the dark green of the foreground shadows. Almost everything else is just a tint or shade of those two colors. It may also be worth it to break everything into clearly defined areas of those tints, using a hard edged brush. The fuzzy brush and opacity blending is making the image look messy. If you simplified your shapes and tones more, you could focus on the composition of the image (which is better with the bottom chunk included, IMO), and the actual shapes that are there. Think of this like an oil painting; the more bold you are with your brush strokes the better it looks in the long run. Fuss about with it too much and it starts to look like blurry mud.
KarylGilbertson
June 9th, 2009, 08:08 PM
@a.lam: Very good point. I think that would definitely have improved the image, if I had stuck with a harder brush and tried to make things a little clearer. And I agree about the bottom part of the compostion, too: my "cropping" was purely accidental :S The darkest values are down there!
KarylGilbertson
June 9th, 2009, 08:09 PM
Another thought: it might be interesting if I simplified the image into 3-5 values and kept it pretty graphic, it would definitely be clearer, and probably better than my latest attempt anyway.
Pixie Trick
June 10th, 2009, 06:00 PM
Newest drapery study is looking good. Nice job on the hair. Good to see the posemaniacs too.
In terms of your landscape: I know it was meant for a colour study, but might you just look where the house on the hill is in comparison to the centre of the page? Much lower and to the right. The same things I mentioned go for this too. It goes for absolutely everything you could possibly want to paint from life or photo. Go ahead and grab a hard brush with high opacity too. I know some people here go for the completely 100% opacity hard brush for the entire thing just for the practice. Try the graphic... It's just practice. If it turns out sucky, just try some other way. Keep up the woooooorkkkkkk!!! :sungod:

That "little pony" looks good! I especially like that combination of colours. I have two minor crits; first one is the extra pair of arms. It looks good, and well-placed within the horse anatomy, but that position is a bit forced. The hands are resting, but no t the arms. I have the impression that, if the arms were resting, the elbow should go just in front of the dagger-shaped scar of the foreleg.
Also, one thing about the spines: Given the colour and texture, the normal thing would be that they are extensions of the protruding bones, so they shouldn't grow from where there's only muscle. Try to visualize the creature in "parts": First, the skeleton alone (bony spines included); then, add the muscles, and finally the skin.
Well, I hope it helps!
anyway, grerat work in here! keep it up!

Played a bit more in SketchUp today... I made a tire, haha! I want to go in and build some sort of sci-fi utility vehicle, BUT I don't actually have a design yet. @Abrodos: Thanks for the comments man... I definitely have more work to do on the horsey dude, and I think a lot of your comments are good, but I actually -did- try to get the bone splines right... They are coming out between two muscle groups (maybe I should try to make the difference between the two groups more pronounced?) and I was envisioning them coming out of the strange horsey scapula. I dunno. I'll take another look and see if I'm off.
@Eon: Thanks for the comments, and for checking my stuff out dude!
Now, here's a vehicle design for that tire from the last post.. Not sure on this. I liked the thumbnail quite a lot, but now that I've left it for a few hours and looked at it with "fresh eyes" it might be a little too "simple" from a design perspective. What do you think?
a.lam
June 12th, 2009, 12:48 PM
It does seem a bit simple, but then again a hummer is just a box on wheels...
Maybe look at actual truck proportions and see where they actually place the wheels in the chassis. The main shapes of your truck are super symmetrical, which is taking away from interest. For example, I'm not sure that the cabs of trucks are perfectly centered between the wheels, even in monster trucks that don't carry much else except for the driver. It might help to really details what this vehicle is for and that can help you to influence its shape; for example the new batmobile is modeled after military vehicles as well as stealth planes. Built for the military, rugged and also apparently invisible to radar.
Remember Bauhaus; form follows function!

Hey dude :D the SSG is up and running!
Some real cool sketches you have here - especially the weapon and logo design.
Maybe some more focus on the human being. And then as previously said, some more traditional pencil drawing would be nice too :)
Cheers!

Hey there, SSG buddy !
Thas lasergun looks amazing ! And that corridor you're working on keeps gettin better and better. Still looks a bit unfinished to me (isn't it ?) but you're definitely getting there.
But I also have to agree with Fumble: More pencil drawings would be nice. Because the sketches from page 6 are awesome.

Hey Ook! firstly i have to say im rather damn jelious that you get to work with a cintiq...
anyways....your fabric studies have come along nicely, esspecially the one on the woman. Also, your work with sketch up is far better than i could get done, i.e. the ditail in the hallway, hope your carrying on with that one?? if you can apply your rendering shown in the logo pic to the hallway i reckon you'll be onto a winner! :D Also nice work on the gun, the way you got there is class, with the brushes for shape...
keep it up mate

Good stuff in here. I particularly like the pencil sketched monsters on page...five?
Your paintings are showing more spacial depth than they did at first. Good work.

Hello! You're use of vivid colors is a nice touch, love it. I think you should concentrate some studies on environments a bit, cause it seems to be a weak point compared to your other stuff. Perhaps concentrate on learning about environment perspective, and lighting. It will help with understanding how to get your environments looking more... open. Paint paint paint...

Hey there !
Your most recent character is really really nice. The armor is pretty cool. Though there seems to be something wrong with the perspective of his visor thingy. It kind of looks like one is looking at it from below, although the viewer is about at eye height with the character.(Could be that I'm wrong, though).
Either way, really nice.

@Gilead: Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! Thanks for the comment!
@Costau_D: Good idea, I'll try to work on my environments more.
@RoboMonkey: Thanks for the comment mate, I'm not sure I'm seeing the problem with the visor but that doesn't mean it's not there. Maybe I'll try flipping it or something and have a look. Thanks again!
Here's a WIP of a creature design I'm working on...

Alright, worked some more on this... Started rendering on the right side there. Trying to figure out, "How rendered is rendered enough?" on shit like this. Any thoughts?
Fumble
June 25th, 2009, 03:31 AM
I have a few comments on the creature from post #211: I find the upper arm a bit too short, the elbow should go down to the navel (on a human that is). The ribcage looks weird (i dont know if this is intentional). If it isn't, look through some anatomy books and study the ribcage/torso.
The logo is looking sweet. I dont know much about rendering, but some of the tubes/wires looks a bit over-rendered compared to the rest.
Keep rocking :)
RoboMonkey
June 25th, 2009, 10:48 AM
Hey there, Ook !
I can't exactly fgure out what it is, but it seems there is something wrong with that creatures (upper) legs. Although it could be intentional, so I don't know.
Anyway, your logo is totally neat. I guess I can't really help you with your rendering problem, because I think that both the right and the left half of that thing look real nice in their own way.
Though I have to agree with Fumble: Some of the tube stuff on the top kinda stands out compared to the rest. The pattern on the black tube for example is a tad too sophisticated compared to the a bit more abstract texture of the rest of the logo. (Although one could probably argue about that).
I hope that last one wasn't too nit-picky :) Because that logo is totally sweet.

Hey Ook,
im going to agree with fumble and monkey (sounds like a t.v. show lol) ...anyway... yeh about the wires and pipes at the back. maybe if you could bring out the middle a bit more to capture the eyes attention i.e. slightly desaturate the metal / wires.. maybe that would do it? im not sure...jus a suggestion.. but aye, keep it up mate!

June 26th, 2009, 05:54 PM
Fumble, RoboMonkey, Cuervo: Thanks for the comments! I will definitely implement some of your suggestions.
Was just playing around with PS today... lots of problems with this one, but my main aim was just to play with texture and pattern since a lot of my work lacks this, and becomes shiny and plasticy.

About the first painting: the only thing that really bothers me is the dudes eye. It looks like it's a bit to far in the back. (Reading the sentence I just wrote, I kinda doubt that one can actually understand it. Do you get it ?)
ANYWAY. About that portrait. PLEASE tell me that you didn't trace that in Photoshop. Cause if you didn't, you totally are my hero. It looks freaking awesome.

LOVE this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=706941&stc=1&d=1245900102).
Self portrait looks great! I think your right (on the viewer's left) needs to be moved down just a little, and tilted slightly counter-clockwise. Colors look awesome. :)

love the belt thingy mech stuff up there! but i think u should keep up with the left part rendering rather then the smooth rendering on the right. i love the abit rusty texture :D
KarylGilbertson
June 28th, 2009, 08:26 PM
@RoboMonkey: Yeah I know what you're saying about the eye. Also I think it doesn't adhere to the perspective used in the rest of the face. Also, I didn't trace it, or colour grab! haha I painted it the hard way... it's the first piece in a while I've been really pleased with the result. Thanks!
@Cacodaemonia: Thanks a lot eh! I can see what you're saying about the eye, too. Ah well :)
@d4z: I love the texture too, but since it's supposed to be an ultra-slick logo for the final product, painterly texture stuff doesn't really fit in... it sucks but what can you do :P

A couple pages out of the new (line-free) moleskine the wife bought me. Drew that last one while watching Shawn Barber's Foundations of Painting, which is pretty neat. m:asskisser:

Is that a child's skull? The jaw seems very narrow. Shading looks cool though. :)
I was thinking for that hand - maybe try focusing more on shading than outlines? I know that when I try to draw foreshortened hands, they look like rubbish when they're just lines, but start to look more normal when I add shadows.
Fumble
July 3rd, 2009, 01:09 PM
the two faces are really good and so is the standing figure. The skull however looks a bit weird, maybe its because the forehead turns outward?
Anyways keep doing the daily updates :D

Nice moleskin stuff! about the skull: i think the cheekbone and jawbone are a bit too small for the "round" part of the skull.
Keep it coming!

July 3rd, 2009, 01:36 PM
Hey guys, thanks for the comments... as you say, the cheekbones and the jawbones are small. It *IS* a fetal skull, but with that said I'm sure there are anatomical issues with my drawing as well.
Thanks again! :)

I'm kind of a no0b, so this is kind of a basic question, but an easy one to answer, fortunately! What is rendering? Layering stuff?
KarylGilbertson
July 8th, 2009, 12:49 AM
Hey linkdude... thanks for stopping by my sketchbook! Noob questions are alright... "rendering" is a term used to describe the work that is done to take a piece of artwork from a sketch/rough stage to a finished stage. It's about going in there and cleaning it up, working the surfaces, tones and colours to a polished, finished level (which varies of course depending on how polished you want/need the final piece to be).
I hope that description helps and isn't too confusing! comment again, or pm me if you need clarification or have any other questions. I'll help if I can (though I am somewhat nooby in my own right)

Some of you may remember the horse demon I was working on a few pages back... finally got my shit together (somewhat) and got working on the painting I was designing him for in the first place... I'm not sure exactly where I'm going to take this as far as painterly vs. rendered is concerned, probably more painterly.. still have things I want to do to it though before calling it done. I'll say I'm about 75% done on this.

July 9th, 2009, 09:45 AM
Hey, I like what you've got going in this painting. :) Watch out for those tangents, though! I've been trying to be aware of things like that lately, so I noticed them in your piece. Fore example: the hilt of the sword touches the frame, as do the horns and ears.
KarylGilbertson
July 9th, 2009, 12:11 PM
@Cacodaemonia: Yeah I see what you're saying... I'm thinking of rotating the whole pic maybe 5-10% counter clockwise and see if that helps with any of the composition issues :P
here's something i started yesterday and finished up today... j'aime le drapery! :)

You got some great updates here recently! the one with the horse is good, no crit.
The drapery/pants study is great too. only thing i'd say is too push your values with the pencil alittle bit more.

The horse came out pretty good, almost like something you'd see on a heavy metal album. I agree with you about calling it finished, just gotta move on and learn from it. Study some composition, and layout principles as well. Such as in comic books or anything for that matter considering illustration, it is not wise to cut off limbs at the edge of a page around the joints. Sometimes it can be pulled off, but in most cases it becomes subconciously distracting. For example in your horse painting I couldn't tell if the Horse was half human and wielding the sword or someone else below him.
Over all though it still came out looking good.
