Hey there, Ook !
That Venom looks impressive :) I also like the background; the lights in the windows and stuff. Good atmosphere.
But there is something bugging me with Venoms right leg. I mean, I get the perspective and that the leg is supposed to be real close to the viewer and stuff, but it still seems to stick out a bit too much.
And I'd maybe consider changing his left lower leg/ foot. I mean, this is probably purely a matter of taste, but I believe that you've been thinking a bit too "human" when you've been working on that area. Because venom is such an over-the-top-muscle-spider-mutation, but in the painting, his left lower leg and foot actually look like the ones of a normal dude, just more muscly. I think you could go more over-the-top with that part.
Man, now my criticism is reading like some really nit-picky peace of crap. But I was really trying to find some constructive criticism for that one. Because that Venom painting looks really neat and I can't wait for you to finish it :)

@DStraX: Yeah true. These latest batch, well they're comic characters so cartoony sort of fits the bill. BUT I do tend to pick very saturated colours, even when it's not cartoony stuff, so you're right. I should do more colour studies from life.
@Braintree: Thanks man!
@Cacodaemonia: Woot thanks for the comment! I finally made a decent composition!!! Also, you're spot on about the table... I'll darken it for sure.

My critz would be that the highlights on his head and sleeve are a bit too bright and white. So goes for the guy in the background.
Jonas_J
July 21st, 2009, 01:23 PM
Crit for the king pin, Im going mega nitpicking here :D:
- head anatomy: his "skull" (or, the round part from the eyes and above) is too small. It makes his forehead seem tiny. maybe it curves too much inwards too fast too.
- the fleshy part above the eyes and below the eyebrows seems to be too large compared to a guy who is frowning (I assume thats what he's doing because of the wrinkles in the skin between the eyebrows). So move the eyes up abit.
- He's a bad ass mafia type, so make his jaw more square and masculine.
- The shading on the side of his neck seems to be a little too bright compared to other places in shadow.
- The hand on the table is not that interesting, compared to the fact that it has a strong highlight (and contrast with the dark suit). Also it seems a bit ... fat/sausage-like? So make it more interesting (maybe take a photo of your own hand for reference). To keep the hand interesting, maybe place a sort of secret mafia-brotherhood type of ring on it.
- The other hand (the one with the cigar (which is awesome)) could maybe have some more red color in the light, where the cigar's light is reflecting.
Well thats all I can think of. Happy painting! :lifedrawing:

Good crit from Braintree. I pretty much agree with everything except for the skull part, simply because that could be considered an element of style. I guess it depends on if you were deliberately making his skull a bit squished.

One thing that really bugs me about the Kingpin Piece, is that the desk and window are at two different angles. Generally when you put a piece of furniture in a room, you align it either parallel or perpendicular to a wall. Although the desk may be placed differently, it's putting me off balance. Some more hilights on his jacket wouldn't be out of place either in my opinion. It really is quite a nice piece and I wouldn't mind seeing it pushed further even if you think it's done. I like the thumbs too, the closeup on the drift wood especially.

Your colours are looking quite muddy and dark my dear. I think a better pic would be needed for more help since everything has a red-ish cast to it. Maybe you could try holding up a printed copy of the thumbs and comparing the differences? There's a whole lot less contrast between everything, and from what I can tell, what was green-ish grey, and blue-ish grey is a more red-ish grey and brown-ish grey. (English needs more names for colours!!!!) Might I ask what type of paint you're using?

Hey man, your character designs came out pretty cool. The only problem is they tend to look a bit stiff, you should really work on some gesture drawing and loosening up a bit to help with those dynamic poses. The thumbnails for the cowboy piece, I'd say my favorite is number 2 just because it tells more of a story in the picture. Number 4 was a good choice as well, but I think it needs a little something more to tell a story. Aside from him just standing in an alley way next to a car.

The oil painting is delicious. The handling of colors is clean and pure, and the brushmarks prove that. The top left one is really convincing. On the contrary, some of your digital pieces are a bit messy imo (I'm looking at the ones on the previous page). Some areas could be less marky so the planes are more readable. Also, some of the really black shadows (like Kingpin's neck and the shading on Venom's muscles) flatten the characters. Maybe some skin tone studies in gray scale could help out.
Keep up the good work. :D

The evil thief's mask is scary. D8 What species are they? I see pointy ears... I like the designs so far, though the evil one's outfit might be a bit too heavy/clunky for thieving? I'm imagining the metal spikes and leg guards banging against things and making noise.

Paintover!
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1780851/good_thief.jpg
So mainly the issues I had with it were that the color scheme was too grey, the modeling had too many hard edges, and the pose is stiff as well as not planned out properly beneath the armor.
Don't forget to draw out the whole body before you start drawing armor!! The clothes and stuff are getting in the way of you creating 1) a dynamic pose, and 2) an actual body underneath.
For colors, my issue with it was that it was very cold for one thing, and very washed out. As you can see, I didn't up the saturation very much at all, but I think the colors are a lot more balanced. I warmed up the purple with some red, and unified the color in the skin. i put the colors I used to the side (the lighter one is the opacity level I actually used to paint with). I used pretty low opacity and smoothed out a lot of the hard edges. I think most of your edges are too hard. Musculature might look like that under your skin, but skin is one continuous piece that doesn't grip every crevice of your musculature, so you wouldn't get super hard shadows as if one piece were going underneath the other. I painted down a lot of the highlights, as skin is fairly matte. I also painted down a lot of the shadows, because the lighting isn't that strong on the rest of the piece.
You should take a look at the color theory streaming class. I haven't seen it yet, but I really want to, and I'm sure it's awesome. A basic rule to stick by for now is that colors should always be balanced in some way. In a piece like this, where there is no background, it is important that your balance is quite even between dark and light, warm/cool. Your character would have looked at home in a misty grey landscape, but on it's own on a white bg, it looks very grey. I've been noticing that in order to calm down your saturation thing, you've been adding a ton of grey to everything. You don't have to add THAT much grey :P
Think of Buddhism and the Middle Way. In this case, I made your midtone more saturated to balance out the relatively de-saturated shadows. The whole piece is pretty grey and cool, so I added a little bit of red to everything (except the skintone). It honestly took me longer to write this out than it did to paintover your piece, so you're pretty close. You just need to go that one step further to get unification.
Hope that helps!

Nice variety of designs! My biggest crits are toward the good thief. I know you're done already, but stuff to keep in mind in the future...
The musculature in her legs and neck is not quite correct. I can't really explain it well, but since I've been studying Bridgeman so much, I highly recommend you take a look at the book, too. It's helped me understand where all the muscles go under the skin, and how they're attached to the bones. In particular, the upper/front side of her left (on our right) thigh is funky - it's almost concave, when it should be bulging slightly due to the shape of the muscles and the way she's standing. Lastly, her forearms are a bit too long, especially compared to her upper arms, which are quite short.
Keep it up man! :D

Cool structures in this enviro. Couple things: the green in the middle ground seems too saturated to me, and the highlights on the middle ground building may be too light? I don't think they should be much lighter than the highlights on the foreground building, right?

Hey Ookchk
Pretty much agree with Cacodaemonia crit.
I do have a comment on the perspective though. The house in the foreground is seen straight on, but the house in the background is situated a bit higher then the foreground house, and it is seen a little bit from the top, since the bottom of the house curves a bit down. hmm maybe i'm just seeing it wrong :P
Anyways keep doing those environments :)

Here's something I'm working on for the Industrial Design of the Week... the theme is "Mobile Fort" and must be either medieval, steampunk or dieselpunk. I hadn't heard of dieselpunk until now, so I was intrigued...
Btw, this is photoshop over a SketchUp model I made :)
a.lam
October 20th, 2009, 03:20 PM
Hey buddy, it's looking good! Since it's a development piece, the only thing I can really comment on is the design. It'd be good if there were doors or something that indicated the scale of this thing. From the wheels you sort of gather that it's big, but how big? Ridiculously big? Or just slightly bigger than a modern day tank? How big are those guns? Is it that the thing just has small treads and big guns, or is this an enormously huge fort with even bigger guns? Needs something to give it more context... Not everything on this thing can be big! Some stuff has to be small to give it balance and visual texture.
I also think it needs more interest. I don't know anything about dieselpunk but it looks like a 1920's train attached to a couple of fat-looking torpedoes. It seems disproportionately wide in comparison to it's length, something which I don't find aesthetically pleasing. I think the basic proportions of the vehicle need to be revisited. I like the 1920's train part, but the other stuff just doesn't seem to connect with it in a way that says "someone made me this way on purpose". I realize those steampunk-esque movements are all about salvaging things and making them into victorian era machines, but any jackoff can sit a torpedo next to a train. You're a concept artist! You need to solve this problem in a way that makes people say "WOW!" instead of "oh."

A suggestion for you sp a few posts back, perhaps you could render out the eyes a little more, just to give the piece a clearer focus point.

hey dude, i really like your environ on post #339 ! Keep working on thumbnails and industrial design, you're really good at it ! Maybe you should try to work on your colors, sometimes, the values painting looks more interesting that the colored one, because your colors are a bit " boring " ! Just try to see your favorite artists' paintings and use the same palette ! Anyway, keep up the good work !

Hmmm..... I think if something were made for jousting, it would be a bit more streamlined. It looks rather like a heavy duty, all terrain type of vehicle right now. The ruggedness and all...
Nice to meet you Karyl Gilbertson! The enviros are looking nice (..agree with Walid D, but still, very nice!). :geekg:

Hey Karyl thanks for the advice in my thread, it's going to come in handy.
You've made a huge amount of progress, kudos. Especially your designs and draftsmanship has gotten much better. Your figures are still looking a bit on the stiff side, the one thing I can suggest is try to understand how weight carries the figure (gesture drawing helps a lot with this). Your environments are getting much better, what I think would help a lot though in your paintings is trying to get more contrast, but I'm not sure.
That last post of the jousting bike is coming out great, I especially like your way of finding shapes and thumbnailing it out. Bah! putting that stuff aside it just looks Kick Ass! There.

You've got quite a bit of good stuff there, I especially like the thing you did for the fundraiser, that was good. Not such a huge fan of the mobile fortress though, it seems a little wonky and has sort of a wierd design to it. Keep at it though, you are doing quite well, just don't underestimate the value of studies, both with colour, anatomy and design:)

hey dude, wanna add something about your values ! I find you're using really light values, well generally, you should go from 20% grey to 80 % grey, but try to take some enviros and change the image mode to greyscale on ps, and check the value range, you'll better understand what i mean !

Thanks for friending me. Now you'll never be rid of me.
I look though all the pages here. Your environments are great, you have a good grasp of distance. Your mechanics (guns, tanks etc) are also good. I like your oil paintings and your still lives have improved loads. Then we come to faces, most of the eyes are too big to be realistic and the planes are not quite there. You've hardly done any in the last few pages except for your latest. It's your one real weak point and you're going to have to address it. We all have them (value is mine) and the only way forward is to tackle it head on until it's right.
Keep up the rest of the good work as well.

Hey Ookchk/KarylGilbertson ;)
Like the work you've done so far on the current piece. the secondary light-source on the body really helps sell the forms. maybe use it on the face aswell, to help define it some more.

Last one is an interesting starting point. The biggest thing I can see is the composition:I'd make the canvas a bit bigger, so that it's not so overcrowded. Also, I don't think the tilting of the image helps it, it might be better without.
Anyway, can't wait to see it developed! Keep working:)

Decided to get CHoW a try this week... we'll see how it goes.
This is "Samael", an archangel. There are lots of descriptions of Samael, including that he is the Angel of Death. This week's CHoW brief says to depict Samael as a fallen angel, so here he is.. The fallen Angel of Death, about to forcefully remove your soul from your body :)
If you're interested... This started out as an extremely messy pencil sketch, before being mercilessly mucked with in Photoshop. More tweaking of anatomy, perspective and composition to come.

That said, I am working on a traditional painting, I'll post it when I am done. Also, today at work I got an opportunity to do some 3D modelling! Very exciting. I did it with SketchUp, and the trees and vehicles are from the SketchUp model library (made by other SketchUp users, I'm not sure who).

First, nice and interesting stuff =).
Second, you still work on http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1060520&stc=1&d=1284155428 ?
Like Black Spot said, lost a bit of form =). Look on the head again, the shape. You can try to mesure it with your eyes from the elbow till the forehead, then the hand. I would suggest that you look at the shadows in the shadows too, special to their value, like on the right breast from light to shadow. It generaly is darker.
oh my~ and 10 min later till I could send it too. Dangerous thread it is haha.
Have fun =).

Did it sell and how big is it? If small - good. If big the boot should be more to the left compositionally wise.
The sketchup picture looks like it comes from the Sims. Is that good or bad? Depends on how many toilets you can lock them out of.
I take pube painting very seriously. Women have enough to cope with being the right shape. Billy Connelly did a great skit where he discussed why pubes stopped at a certain length and if they didn't the possibilities of various styles. Until they start going haywire, I like them as they come.
KarylGilbertson
September 27th, 2010, 08:29 AM
Yes, it's quite small- 9x12 inches. It hasn't sold yet, the show doesn't go up until Oct 1st, then it's a silent auction on all the pieces for two weeks or so I think.

And the shape of the arctic racer is awesome. I like that you worked with skids and not wheels!
maybe you could break the red surface here and there a bit. right now this "one color" feels overwhelming and uniform to me and makes it look slightly like a toy. maybe some openings where you can see some of the tech inside, some solar cells on top or sails on the sides.

Finished up my EOW, and the story that goes along with it:
Long ago, while fasting in the desert, a tribal shaman communed with his ancestors. They led him to an amazing site in the most isolated place in this vast wasteland.
There, in the sand, was a gaping hole. Some sort of wondrous craft had crashed through an uncommonly thin area of ground, coming to rest in the expansive caverns below. Following his ethereal guides, the shaman was able to find a cave entrance and work his way down to the otherworldy wreckage. This marvel, though half buried in sand and unknowably old, still glowed with an eerie light. The shaman carefully removed a piece of the craft, and returned to his people with his trophy and the tale of his find.
Ever since, generation after generation of tribespeople have followed their shamans into the desert, to see with their own eyes the marvel beneath the sands. Here they worship, believing it to be a vehicle of the gods. Here they study this wreck, still glowing after hundreds of years, hoping to one day learn of its secrets.

Yikes, yesterday's update looks even worse when I look at it now. I went back to the drawing board and started over using more reference and "subsurface" modelling. Again, this isn't really "good", but it's better, and that's enough for me for the time being. Here's the latest attempt:

The software I am using is Blender (2.5, which is a beta release). Blender is open source and therefore free. It is full-featured, can do everything the other software suites can do (as far as I know) but isn't really used professionally. However, I'm hoping that if I can learn the techniques, terminology, and process, then switching to another software package should be easier since I'll mostly just have to relearn the UI. I can't afford anything else since Autodesk discontinued their Maya Personal Learning Edition. :)

3D is really tough and you're doing pretty well learning it. I like the last couple of SPs as well. You're really improving.

Good progress on the 3D man.
One thing I notice though is in the 3/4 view of the figure, the head seems oddly attached/a little large..

Thanks for the comments guys.
skMOP I think you're right that the head might be too big. As for how it's attached, it's actually only half attached at the moment, I have to go in and rework parts of the neck and fix it up.

More work on this. Still nowhere near perfect, but I fear that many problems would have to be redone completely to fix. So I'll move on to UV unwrapping and texturing, and try again later!

It's still an excellent start to 3D. You must have so much patience.

Thanks blackspot, it is certainly a kind of trial-and-error business.
I've done some basic texturing of this fellow, and attempted to do some rigging. Rigging is hard, and I think I've made it harder by having messy topology in my model (also known as: vertexes all over the friggin' place).
Ah well, the work goes on.

Here's some work for this week's CHOW, it's pretty craptastic I know. I am going back to the drawing board, and trying my hand at going analog using ink and markers. Will scan when I can.

Th gun is good. I know what you mean and I should start again more often as you can learn a lot from painting crap the first time, not that yours was that bad.

hehe the gun was photomontage at this point... I had planned to paint over it :) you can see the light source is from the bottom, whereas the rest of the figure is from above :P

another little crappo sketch "scanned" with my phone. Hopefully this will turn into something cool, though. Eventually.

More updates on this, and finally something to actually LOOK at. :)
A mixture of Paint Tool SAI (love that program) and Photoshop for these.

Made some little spot illustrations for a blog post today. I like when I get a chance to do that...

I like those last two - very striking and clean even with the texture.

Thanks eh!
Here's what I've been working on in Unreal Development Kit. Mind that some of this stuff isn't mine... Skybox texture, water material, beach texture- All these things came bundled with UDK. The box and the axe are my creations though, modelled, UV wrapped and imported in from Blender.
The next step is for me to get the axe in as a usable weapon complete with animations... Much harder than just sitting on the ground completely still!
Then, maybe we can use the axe to destroy the box? Hehe it's fragile you know.

Going analog styles for this week's IDW. Ink & Marker!
The topic is "Star Maker", and this is the top view. Orthographic side view forthcoming, I don't think I will have time to do a 3/4 view unfortunately.

This was for another EOW activity, "winged fortress" but I have missed the deadline. Still want to finish this up, so I’d love some feedback!

I really like EOW picture. When you've rendered the figure it might give a better idea of where you're going. The turnip might need a slight push in terms of value.
I've already said on twitter about the armour- choose either shiny or dull, but you could engrave it as well to mix it up.

Thanks for the comment! I spent some more time on this, hopefully it's starting to head in a better direction. I did add some engraving, I think I'll probably add some more and/or tweak the shapes a bit. Don't want it looking boring.
Been spending more and more time in Paint Tool SAI, as well, and less time in Photoshop. As I am getting more used to the way things work in SAI, I am coming to like the way the tools work a lot more.

Sorry, but I'm not sure about the structure of her face. Her eyes aren't lined up to her nose and mouth.
Congrats on the news. Exciting times.

Thank you! :) As for the problems with the painting above... I think I see what you mean, I think it's all about the eye on the right. The perspective seems to make more sense if you cover that up, that eye is too "straight on" I think.
Here's a study I did last night based on one of Nerahla's photos, since they're awesome. :) About 2-3 hours in Paint Tool SAI.

The main problem with using photos is sorting out the perspective that it distorts to make a picture that doesn't look like it was ref'd from a photo.

The lighting is a bit flattening on the oil painting. Maybe making the shadows a bit more dramatic would help flesh her out. Also don't be afraid of giving her skin different colours.
