Why is it that if I am working on an image and I click the eyedropper on an area close to a brushed area it only picks up white?

It picks up colors again if I eyedrop farther away or disable that layer?

It's hard to answer your question without more information as to what brush variant you're using.

I'm taking a wild guess that you're using Digital Watercolor variant that has a fairly high Diffusion setting.

Try this to see what I mean:

Open a new white Canvas.
Choose the Digital Watercolor's Diffuse Water variant and restore it to its default settings (Brush Selector menu > Restore Default Variant).
On the Property Bar, change Size to 20.0 and move the Diffusion slider to 20.
Create a new Layer.
Choose a color and paint a brush stroke on the Layer.
Close the Canvas' Eye icon to make it invisible and display the checkerboard pattern.
Change the Layer Composite Method back to Default and you'll see white around the brushstroke's edges.

Even with the Layer set to Gel (the automatic Composite Method when we paint on a new Layer using Digital Watercolor), if you click with the Dropper tool near the edge of the visible brush stroke, the Dropper will be picking white or a much lighter version of the currently selected color, depending on how far from the center of the brush stroke you click.

If what I've said doesn't apply to your situation, please supply us with more details so we'll be able to figure out what's happening.

Wow, thanks.

I changed it to default and I saw a very big white blob on my painting.

Thanks again.

You're welcome. Happy to hear my guess was correct.

If you need to reuse colors already used in your painting, you can go to the Color Sets palette, click the left icon and choose New Empty Color Set. Then each time you select a new color you can add it to your custom Color Set by clicking the icon with the plus sign (third icon from the left).

Be sure to save your custom Color Set so you can use it in following Painter sessions (Color Sets palette menu > Save Color Set).
