Hi CA! My name is Lindsey, but you can call me whatever you like. I'm 18 (sketchbook started @ 16), live in the US, and am a freshman at Art Center College of Design. I use, from most to least, ballpoint pen, photoshop, pencil, acrylic, and colored pencil. And uh... white out. o_O I like character design.

Thanks, I really appreciate it :) My goal is to do at least enough art to keep this sketchbook alive, so that means less re-re-re-re-redesigning existing characters and more new ideas XD
I figured I'd post this, this is a personal project and the source of my angst over painting different materials. The leather pants I'm happy about, the belt not so much, and I can't figure out what I want her gloves/shrug to be made out of. Curse you, vinyl D: Her forearm is a bit long compared to her... upper arm? Stiff poses for the fail D:
All of my figures wind up being really skinny, but I guess that's because I'm a stick myself XD; need to work on fattening up my charas...

Oh very nice - the shading is coming along great. Definately keep it up - if you can do this now I can only imagine what you'll be doing by the time you're 20. I'm jealous. :D

Pfft, why didn't I post this. This is my next Comp Art class project (well, it would be a personal project, but my computer gets stubborn with anything over 50 MB...). Wohoo 13x19 poster! At this point I've just got a lame color mock-up with test lighting on another layer and a random sunset (sunrise???) pic from cgtextures.com to help w/ color. Time constraint for this project: Now until the end of the marking period, three to four hours of time on the school computers a week (plus one or two depending on how many free periods I spend there).
I'd love some help with the composition, I need to figure out a way to get people to look at the girl at the bottom first, my original plan was to box everyone else in the pipes/border but I haven't gotten to that yet. I would also love a yay/nay on the redhead girls' legs, I tried jumping across my room in that pose and it was awkward. I don't know if the fact that she's carrying a heavy suitcase (it's not so obvious :\) compensates for that, people do lean away from the weight if they're carrying something... and... leaping? Bah.
Any and all suggestions are welcome @_@ And I'll include some doodles of the characters in case that interests anyone.
I write too much. o_o
*Edit* Whoa, forgot there was a forum specifically for critique. I'm goin theeere. Unless anyone has something vital to tell me, don't go out of your way :)

I woke up ridiculously early and used the time to attempt to draw from a photo. Uh... it failed. I have to fix her face. >_<; And I had no real intention of shading the latex so just... overlook that. *sigh* Now to write the five page paper due wednesday...

You might want to work a bit with the opacity of your brush and smoothen the transition a bit more... ? :]
Actually her face looks pretty good, proportion-wise. The nose could use some more attention next time though !!
Keep it up !

awesome sketchbook! I especially love the greek alphabet people XD Very creative. As for helping on the composition of the poster....since the girl you want focus on has mostly middle-to-dark colors (which don't draw my eye by themselves), I would try to pump up the contrast on her and maybe try desaturating the people behind her a little bit? I think the poster looks cool so far anyway :D

Faroresama: I recognize your art! I've seen you on dA Thanks for stoppin' by, and I'll definitely try to work with the colors. Excellent suggestion~

I took a look at the Teen Challenge for the upcoming weeks, and I guess we minors get to design gunslingers! Woot. I started doodling out some concepts for that but I ended up with yet another young woman, so I drew the polar opposite. He looks pissed at me for not doing homework.
Behold, the worst hat ever. No refs, so I'm not complaining.
Might be developed further later, but for now, [/procrastination]

God help me, my sister is having ~22 sophomores over tonight for a dance party in out basement instead of a traditional birthday party. Like hell that essay is getting worked on with rap blasting.
Applying for a scholarship at the local art guild, wish me luck >_O
Voila, the product of a few class periods between taking notes... experimenting in an almost caricature style to change up my profiles. I had some of my friends draw random guide lines during Physics and I drew from them in math. Wheeee D: Attempted to color birthday cake boy, the original sketch is in the bottom left because it fails less.
What else to draw today...

Hi Lindsey!
Nice to see a nice new fresh sparkly sketchbook on here! Hehe.
I'm loving what you've shown so far. I love that creature design in your first post, third image down and the collection of characters in post #8.
It's nice to see a list of things at the start, touching on the aspects that you want to focus on too. It'll be interesting to see how you progress in each area from here. :)
Oh and post #12, that skin tone is coming on great. A great way to neaten up those highlights on the latex/PVC costume would be to simply smudge them out a fraction and run it along her curves..that would be a nice quick fix anyway if you're strapped for time.
Cheers,
Cx

great stuff! I really like the rich colors... and the heart zombie is wonderful. keep it coming if you please.
also... referring to your comment about finding friends willing to get naked... I hope you have more luck than i did at your age. most of the people *I* asked thought me a pervert... and the ones that approached me turned out to have some narcissistic illness that could only be quenched by prancing around in front of you and observing your reaction. also, i think my mom thought i was part of some sex cult. ANYWAYS high five to modeling sessions!

Here's what I have of a commission I'm working on. A former student of one of my art teachers asked me to design a custom PS3 skin for his girlfriend for Christmas with a snowboarding theme. He told me she sticks Burton stickers on everything, so he sent a letter to the company asking if I could reproduce their logo on the skin. What a nice guy, I'd like a fully personalized PS3 for Christmas. I'm new to the whole big commission project thing, does anyone have any suggestions for how much I should charge? I've spent about six and a half hours total between research, thumbnail sketching, and actually putting it together and I'm guessing I have another four or five hours to go for the figure and finishing the sihlouette of the mountains/trees. Thanks in advance :)

Wohoo, crap for Gaia. I opened a "shop" there over the summer to get a taste of designing under someone elses specifications/preferences. It was fun, but then I forgot to stop once school started :P I still owe people some stuff, so here goes. Sig banner WIP for somebody, and a sketch (A VERY SKETCHY SKETCH, it will be refined, I just didn't want to update with one stupid pic) for an auction. SMELLS LIKE ANNIE MAYS. Blahhh.
Sent two invoices this weekend for design work. Exciting stuff, gaiz, I almost feel like a pro. Now... back to school tomorrow where nothing productive gets done.

Blaz: Thanks :) I didn't use a reference for that face. XD; Yeah, I wish I had finished the gunslinger, too, but I've got so much going on that finishing a piece in two weeks is wishful thinking. I have to work on speed~
Finished the sig banner (more like worked on it more than the payment justifies), it was a good experiment in using other means than repainting to improve a piece. For giggles, I attached a "Before" image, 'before' implying 'before I read every single tutorial available on ConceptArt'. Pitiful, really. Now if only I could do the same thing in a quarter of the time! Also, some doodles, and the sword I modeled at camp. My first model, whee. Poor concept, but fun to make... I had way too much fun with the keys, even though I completely forgot to make a spec map for them :D
I woke up with this really mysterious itch on my finger... very uncomfortable stuff, I tell ya.

WOW. Im impressed. I'm soo happy that I don't have to tell another new member to do thier anatomy studies. Totally more focused then I was when I was 16. But I would suggest doing a lot of portrait studies of models to help make your characters look more relaxed and natural. Theres a couple of threads that can help you with your goal of doing creature and enviorment design. Goodluck

One of my art homework assignments is to draw five separate things that I am thankful for (>_>;)
1/5: House. I tried to keep it short, so I spent maybe an hour on this. Some areas are still lumpy (his upper lip/right brow bone) so I might fix that up tomorrow, but yeah... good practice. Hugh Laurie is a toughie because he's so distinct looking... if you get one thing wrong, it's glaringly obvious.
Next up: Bitch Boots, physics, art supplies, and garlic. I hate how juvenile some of these assignments are, so I'm going to use each part of this one as a photo study.

Wow, 16? You're gonna be a badass... :O
Tough to crit... remember that the eyes are spheres, and the brow casts a shadow over them, especially on men (who have a more prominent superciliary arch over the eye socket). I'm thinking of post 32 mainly, but some of your faces look like the eyes are too lit/overemphasized. Keep up the anatomy study; your figures look very good overall, but a few proportion problems stick out. I think you're tending to draw the arms too short and chest too high (I do this too, so it pops out at me).
Really good work; this will be an interesting thread to follow.

I just got a letter from Scholastic saying I had won something :D wheeee... now to find out what it is.
1) Jester/scarecrow hybrid. Goes with...
2) Mostly naked juggler man. I listen to "The Blood is Love" by QotSA too much.
3) The begginings of my CHOW Plauge Doctor.
4) After buying and subsequently watching Marko's DVD, I was unable to do anything but rip him off for a few days. At least it managed to drag me out of a creative slump (read: a GHIII marathon lasting several weeks).
5) Character doodles. I happen to like it when they look like they're floating, thankyouverymuch.
6) OLD ART WARNING!!! My Dungeons and Dragons Warmage, Rhoda. Lulz. She enjoys shiny things and very little else.
7) That poster thing. I've always wanted to give that guy either bright orange or lime green wrestling boots. They actually have a purpose. Imagine him much like you would a peacock... colorful, flambuoyant, cocky... just to attract zee ladies.

Hi there, I like how you've made the sketchbook pages match the colour of the back drop here on CA hehe, unusual but it sort of works.
The attention to detail in a lot of your costume designs is really lovely. I can see a few problems with some of the anatomy though, so keep practising that when you get the time. I know feet and hands are especially difficult to get spot on most of the time!
Take care,

Accumulated doodles for the week, plus a revisit to that old jester chica. I keep coming back to her in my head, and the little world she's from, so... hrm. May as well do something with her. I named her Cho in the meantime and made her Japanese. Note to self: practice drawing dudes.

Great sketchbook! I've been following it for a few weeks. Your designs are great and some of the things are really funny. But on that last one something seems off on the man's shoulders, I may not know much about drawing humans, but that's about the only thing I can critique.

Heavyflash: Aw, thank you for the attention <3 I do see what you mean about the shoulders. I haven't given them nearly enough love. I'll keep that in mind next time I work on him.
I picked up a mechanical pencil for the first time in months to see what would happen. Yet again, I get caught up in rendering and totally forget about things like, er, anatomy. Ballpoint is clearly the superior drawing impliment! DX!!!
A doodlie revisit to the crazy dude on the left (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=305249&stc=1&d=1203273774) but made more awkward with the addition of a codpiece (gotta love codpieces) but sans three limbs. Yaaay gay clowns. Plus a failed pen sketch and another failed pencil sketch which I may finish with pen tomorrow, because how often do I draw knights? Never. And that's just sad.

Oh, about the guns, it's just that the stocks on rifles are generally designed so you can at least wrap your thumb/fingers around them right behind the trigger. Absorbing the recoil is hard without a firm handhold. There are older designs that break that rule of course, I think mostly 1600/1700's era.
Nice dragon/rider. I like the fine/detailed pencil work. (I have very little patience when drawing with lines) I also dig the shield the pink-haired girl has. It's like a trilobite.
Ah, figure drawing class. Always good for some interesting experiences. We got "obese creepy nudist guy who went into a diabetic state and couldn't put his clothes back on". Good times.

Speed paint in class, 40 mins? I dunno. No refs, hence the screwy lighting. It always takes me a good extra hour to give the darkened side of the face as much volume as the highlighted side. Thank you for your comment in my sketchbook! I certainly enjoyed looking through yours.
You obviously enjoy drawing characters. They have a nice sense of movement and design. Almost all of your characters, though, are in the young, slender, and attractive demographic. There's nothing wrong with attractive characters, of course, but I think you should branch out a bit more with different ages and body types.
I'm liking your forays into environments and architecture. I especially like those ramshackle, amorphous houses that you draw. Very interesting designs! In the sketches of more traditional rectangular buildings further up this page, though, you placed your vanishing points too close together, which is causing some warping. I once read in an architectural drafting book that the distance between your vanishing points should be at least three times as wide as the object you're drawing is tall.
You asked for critiques on your mechanical stuff, but as I find that sort of thing incredibly awkward to draw I can't offer any critique. All I can give you is encouragement.:rendered:
The scorpion frog is a great idea, and the painting is off to a nice start. There are a few ways in which I think the design could be improved. First of all, the legs are very skinny, strait, and twig-like, and the frog feet don't flow with the front legs very well. Both frog legs and scorpion legs can have some very attractive and dynamic curves to them. See here (http://www.ub.ntnu.no/scorpion-files/scorpion_anatomy.jpg), here (http://www.newint.org/issue378/pics/life-1.jpg), and here (http://images.livescience.com/images/071030-leaf-frog-04.jpg). I would love to see you give the limbs of your creature some more attractive, flowing curves. Also, its pedipalps (the front pair of limbs that bear the claws) are rather short. These limbs often have very dynamic masses and curves, especially in large species, such as the Emperor Scorpion. That's another thing you could emphasize in this design.
I also really loved your sentient bird alien from a little while back. That's a very nice design and rendering. Keep up the great work!

I need to get back on the ball. My output fluctuates with the freaking weather. And in New England, that is significant. Have a quick photoshop doodle. The pose is weird but I like it. And uh... the bow is stolen off google. For now. Messing around with a character I've had for a looooong time.

My57: Haha if only I drew it, I nabbed it from google. I was in a character mood, not an ID mood.
hunchbackmagee: A little big of both at once? It's hard to explain. I don't have a set process, I just kinda get the body shape down, make sure it's somewhat correct, then slap color on top of it. Then of course I notice the anatomical mistakes and correct as I go along.
OmertA: Thank you! Thumbs are fun. They definitely require being in a certain mood in order not to be boring as hell though. Good luck with yours~

Holy bananas! Your stuff has inspired me. I have only just started drawing humans out of necessity and every time I start to think I am doing all right, I see awesome stuff like yours and I am reminded...oh yeah...just cause I can draw genero pretty face woman in profile ok after an hour of work is no cause for celebrations. There is clothing folds and action poses and character in the face and outfit design and weapons and vehicles and oh crap so much more! It is humbling and inspiring at the same time to look through all your wonderful work.
The only crit I can safely offer is on your critter designs: take some time to study various kinds of animal legs. They are just as various as the faces and attire of humans. The back legs in particular tend to be blobby around the knees and then over stiff and angular around the ankles. The joints should flow together just as smoothly as on a human.
Thank you for shiwing your work!

Nettle_Mountain > Thank you for your comment. It's extreeeemely helpful to know what I've done successfully. Strange, though, because the first two were the ones I didn't use a reference for...
Almost done with all of these bastards. One and a half more. Why did I ever come up with a story with so many central characters? Still rendering out the redhead, and here's a sketch for the youngest of the group. He's one of those puberty-challenged High School freshmen types, the ones you swear are about three years younger than they are. And some self-depreciating humor?

Im ashamed I have not been here before! I can easily say that you really have fun with your costume designs, making them complex and interesting. What you are doing technically is coming off quite professional.
The legs of the last may be a tad short, but it didnt jump out as wrong from a glance. The figures themselves sit very well in space. The use of grey is nice to make other areas of the costume pop out, so just think if thats the result you want. Should he have a slightly more bitchin jacket? haha. I look forward to seeing these finished.

It seems you're in the whole applying to colleges process like I am. Often you find people applying to art schools with lack of exposure to certain tools they'll definitely use. You, on the other hand, seem to have early exposure to a lot of things! I've doodled all my life but didn't really start drawing seriously until just before summer. 1) El Patron's Mansion - Exterior Thumbnails (done!)
2) El Patron's Mansion - Exterior (mostly done!)
2.5) EP'S Mansion - Interior thumbnails? Do I have time?
3) Orphan Labor Camp - Thumbnails
4) "Opium" - Eejit Pens
5) San Luis - Sketches (done!)
6) Convent of Santa Clara - Thumbnails (WIP)
I take back my initial statement about it not being all bad.
On top of that, the only comfortable place to work is in front of the TV for background noise, but the first floor of my house is being raped by ants. One crawled on my arm yesterday, and now every time I feel even a hair on my skin shift I think it's an ant. NOT. FUN.
