Rob!T > Ah, but the question is... how do you see out of that hovercraft? That just occurred to me as I was trying to fall asleep last night, haha DX Thank you!
s-man > Thanks muchly~
Areve > Why thank you!

I'm copping out of drawing a full on crazy illu of any of these vehicles and made up for it by drawing more thumbnails. UH. I posted the bottom three rows here before but I just did the top three this morning.

I don't think i've posted here more than one and to shame! You did a fantastic job exploring some of your options with your horses...i had to scroll back up to look once again, they are great!

Have you ever used a 3D base to paint on and figure out the perspective? I haven't yet but I certainly think I might once I get down to more perspective works again. You can also find images of perspective lines that you can drop into your PSD and arrange so you dont draw the lines manually. Not that your building looks wrong...solid! just not colorful - though that could be to design.

are the little thumbs (vehicles/chairs) on paper or digital?

Oranje Joe: Thank you :) I was hunting around the internet for a fan-mail address I could mail a copy of it to, but no luck. I wish I could hear her (Nancy Farmer is her name) opinion.
Jakers: No 3D base, my computer would explode if I tried. I'm going to do that someday. I did start, though, with a pencil drawing on massive paper so I could get it right. 99.9% of the thumbnails are traditional medium. Thank you <3
Hygami: Thanks! I'm hunting for an internship right now~

sweet looking portfolio, it's got some truly great pieces of design, your characters as usual are very strong, the only slight shortcoming I can is in the oasis enviros posted toward the top of the page, they seem forced somehow, kind of like a garden rather than somewhere wild. (sorry don't know how better to explain)

p.s. have you tried posting in her guestbook on he site?

I'm probably going to keep cranking out character portraits for a while, I've been wanting to get a solid picture made for each of my more developed characters for years. YEARS. There's only one more core character left to the previous group besides the two I have yet to finish, so here's one from a more fantasy universe/story.

Included with this, for your enjoyment, are some notes on my design-on-the-fly decision making logic. You'll notice that I really try to back every article of clothing with a personality trait, as if the character actually woke up and dressed himself.

Hah. It's a male version of me.

Crap, rushed towards the end. Gotta go to work. Boring shoes and he looks gay. Not that it's a problem to be gay, of course, but one can't be every girl's prince charming/future house husband if one is not inclined to do so 8D

jackpot_anjr90
February 16th, 2009, 09:43 AM

Oops, forgot the trim on the second layer of skirt. Whatever, no time, gotta walk to the train station and score me an internship~

...I'm not feeling this one so much. Can't quite figure out why, either. Hrm. Could be that warmer pink I used.

Oh yeah, this character is sort of also Dana (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1564558#post1564558)'s, hence her art on the side. YES, DANA, I STILL HAVE ALL OF THIS, THOUGH I'M SURE YOU'VE BURNED IT. Hehehe.

I really like your last posts, especially the girl in the pink dress! The only thing that fails is that watermark. It would take me 5 minutes to remove it and it's really hard to read it and it kinda ruins the picture :(

flamable: That's all me, haha. I do some fashiony stuff on the side, making clothes and such. Took some classes in NYC. It definitely helps improve the plausibility and apparent comfort of your costumes, to get some fashion knowledge under your belt.
My57: If they hadn't changed the costumes, I think a lot of costume makers would have too easy a time making them, lol. Some are exactly the same though... like Dollar Bill, and Hooded Justice. Thanks <3
Thank you areve and Hygami!
h2rra: The watermark was my mom's idea, I'm afraid. Every time she sees me put something online without a watermark she gives me the PEOPLE ARE GOING TO STEAL YOUR IDEAS speech. I had to humor her this time :P Never again, I promise. Haha, boobs! I think exposing vulnerable areas in a costume helps signify status... but I did that mostly because I thought it'd be sexy. I suck at sci-fi.

The problem is, I approach sci-fi as an orgy of all existing cultures and those yet to be discovered IN SPPPAAACEEEEE. It doesn't make sense for everyone to streamline and reduce when the realm of aesthetic possibilities has just expanded to the nth degree. When it gets to the point where a spaceship is as accessible as a car and planets are just a day's drive away, why dress up in fancy pants suits to ride one? People used to think airplanes were something to dress up in, now people wear their pajamas. So... I dunno. That's probably why I don't take the jumpsuit route and... therefore... fail?

I would simplify the weapon staff thing hes supporting, its rather complicated and steals a lot of attention away...and make sure that hand gets some size to it ;) A bit less saturation in the bg could do some good, so might a texture brush or two to break it up more.

sage looks pretty skinny.. looks like the sage hasn't eaten ever...

this is just my opinion but one way to boost these more into realism is using different light sources and shading.. right now most of your characters are being lighted form the front try mixing it up a bit get creative

i like the lights, nice pose.. she has to use a DS not a gameboy pffff..

try pushing the design a bit farther how is she a technician? what does she like to do? why? i think this will help come up with some better designs right now it looks like shes got a very fine napsack but im not getting a whole lot that shes a technician or mechanic..
just keep this in mind hopefully this is helpful if not please let me know :)

i think out of all the designs that you have made for the technician this one is the best the others just look like robes with a belt and some tool.. depending on what shes doing will determine what her outfit will look like

Thanks man :) Though it was kind of the "duh" choice out of my thumbs, I thought it would be kind of cool to make a girly girl/elegant technician. Obviously I didn't go for that so much, but I dunno... a tattered/greasy long skirt paired with an industrial leather vest? I might have to save that for another character.

Love these character designs. :) Are they meant for something specific, or just practice? I think the middle three go really well together, but I feel like the costumes for the sage and the hero just don't fit with the others. The sage seems to not be entirely human, though, so that could be explained. :) The hero's clothes feel too clean and neat, if you know what I mean - the others have straps and tatters and layers that give the costumes a lot of character, but the hero seems a bit artificial.

Cacodaemonia: Hehe thanks... they were for the team CHOW. We went with a sort of space pirate/orgy of Human culture theme. I didn't do the Hero actually... Dario did. He was pressed for time :(

I should like... actually finish things.

Nearly there with this one. I'm going to tryyyy and finish one incomplete character per day or so from now until the stack of them is DONE... Here's an embarrassing before shot (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2144219&postcount=282) to contrast this update haha. Funny, the things that one learns in three months...

Great work! I have to agree with Cacodaemonia though about the hero. There's nothing about the hero that screams out HERO if you know what I mean. Judging from your other characters, I'd bet my money on it that you could push the hero even further or make some changes to the character that bring that heroic vibe.
Anatomically things are looking good. The only thing that looks remotely off to me is the Rabble Rouser's left arm. The area by the elbow seems too rounded.

I like the princess a lot. The folds in her clothing look really good. Did you use references for that at all?
The characters in the next update are great as well, especially the monster and I love the tree house!
One thing that caught my eye pretty quickly though was the weapon in her left hand. I couldnt figure out the perspective of it. It doesn't look straight...the sharp half seems to be tilted slightly upward from the angle of the handle.

No refs for her except maybe one to get the sheen right. It still isn't quite right for the fabric I wanted it to be. Buuut regardless, lol. I like the dark pants better, and the seems you added to the jacket/vest look good. :) Hm, as for the arm... maybe the light color of the metal is part of what's drawing the eye and making the arm look so stiff? Have you tried moving the whole arm slightly in toward the center of his body a little? I'm not sure if that would help at all...

I've been looking for an excuse to draw her... since she's only recently been brought from the dead, I figured she'd need to experiment a bit with modern makeup lol buhhh I love Hideki Kamiya's brain... plus there's a HDTV for the winner. HRurhrhrhr.

Thank you my sweet, I'm sort of surprised by how efficient and quick I'm going with this piece... I KNOW RIGHT UGH it looks so absurd and self-indulgent I must have it *reeach* Hey I can't help it! I've got to move across the country DX

Thank you! Please enter, if not for the HDTV then for the joy of drawing so much hair *___*

This is looking awesome so far! :) Couple things:

Her left hand looks a little funny, I think partly because it's making a weird tangent with her hip. Also, the pinky looks too long.

Her face looks significantly older in the rendered piece than in the sketch. I don't know how old she's supposed to look, but I thought I'd point that out. The thinner upper lip and hint of laugh lines are what's doing it, I think.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of this!

Amazing sketchbook, I've been watching you for a while!

Bayonetta looks great, but a couple of things are bothering me;

Her left (our right) eye looks a tiny little bit too high, based on the alignment of her nose.
Her smile seems too wide, specifically on her left (our right).

Hey looking good so far! I haven't been here for a while, so I was about to say that the update looks like Bayonetta--only that it is haha. The details and objects in the back really flesh out the picture, and situation is really humorous.

Her pose--the hip and the legs especially--is awkward. I think getting a reference picture could really help out. Especially because the perspective is unusual, pulling the piece off seems really challenging. But if you pull it off, it'll be amazing!

Maybe including some weapons on the floor? That could really solidify who she is. Also, pulling her upper lids down could accent her "hey there sexy, rawr" expression haha.

Keep it up!

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I've moved some bits around and polished the perspective. I don't have the file with me right now though DX but I appreciate it loads.

You keep getting better and better! This bayonetta piece is looking really awesome, and if I have any problem besides some anatomy tweaks like yihyoungli said, it's that the colors seem very bland and grey
