Well, I had no plans to start a sketchbook, but as it's a requirement of 'Beginners Corner' here we are. Hopefuly it will encourage me to be a little more disciplined and focus on my weaknesses.

Here's the first image 'new concept art, including a chicken'....great concept Stormrider. It's intended to be a bit of a Homage, to 50's sci-fi movie posters, but I've over-modelled the chicken, so the styles not very consistent. But it's a stake in the ground (or maybe that should be a fillet?).

I could post a load of stuff that I've produced over the last 12 months, some not so bad, some not so good, but I've decided to consider this as a bit of a 'fresh start', so let's see where it goes.

Crits, comments and general abuse welcome (although maybe not too much abuse).

(I've linked this to photobucket...if somebody tells me how to upload it as an attachment I'll fix it).

Since posting I notice I also have no avatar, and no clue as to how to fix it...??

Some observational sketches to follow..I hope.

Thought as my anatomy is a bit weak I'd start with some body parts, and as none of my family will sit for me I guess that's a left hand. Haven't touched pencils for a few months, I think it shows. Feet to follow....left or right I wonder?

Hey Greenjack!! Nice chicken!! I love the way u painted!, the glass bubble is a bit too round try to do it more straight in the sides (unless u want that shape i think matches better with that mechy thingy of the feet)

The background! work that bg more, u are making great with the chicken!!!

greetings

Greetings! I hope to get the same thing out of a sketchbook as you friend, and I'm sure we shall both benefit from being apart of the Beginner's group :)

Loving the style and title to your chicken piece(hehehe) but what exactly was the feedback that you got in your other pieces that you tried to improve on this one? I'd love to see the chicken redone though in a more consistent style. I think it could be a real hoot! :P

Watch out for proportions in that hand sketch too.

I shall definitely stick around though and keep an eye on this book. :D

Thanks dan.man. Main crits I had were to do with anatomy and skin tone; didn't really come into play on the chicken. Yeah, think you're right about the hand, fingers are a bit long and thick in proportion to the main body. I'm generally too lazy to measure by eye/pencil and it shows, maybe I should start being a bit more methodical. I may have another look at the chicken....

Couple of crude mechanical pencil sketches from a recent hotel visit below....and yes, my toes are that wonky!

Nice studies.....you can really feel the muscle and skin form around the foot with your shading. Poor toes :P

It may seem like a hassle to measure out things for a drawing, and I know as I neglect it as well, but the payout of taking just that extra time will definitely shine through i'm sure :D

Had another bash at the chicken. Tightened up the background a bit, knocked back the modelling on the head, changed the font and added a chicken rocket. Think it's improved a bit, although not sure the chicken rocket adds a great deal.

This is all I've had time for this weekend, the result of a couple of hours work in photoshop. I'm reasonably pleased with it, it's probably the first 'success' I've had using custom brush shapes, but maybe it could be a bit looser around the body outline (somehow)?

Yeah I'd have to agree with you there. I don't dabble in PS too much as far as free hand drawing goes, but I think a rougher, looser outline would definitely add something. Very interesting shapes you are developing though. :)

Just an idea I'm playing with. Don't know whether it will get developed.

nice stuff up here, like that last one...maybe you could use another angle, or see her(think it´s a her) hovering in the air.

Good luck, will check laterrrr...

Here's another hand study, I think the proportions are better, but not too sure what I was aiming at when I coloured it, a bit too purple me thinks.

Quick selfportrait (1 hr) in Painter, pencils, charcoal and eraser. Could do better, need to spend more time on it, maybe more charcoal and less pencil, as female portrait (not new).

A few updates, the final being a piece I started today. Compared with a lot of my other stuff I'm very pleased with it, although I appreciate it could use some more work in a few areas. Crits welcome.

looking good here!

in your latest update, the first one, the perspective is kinda weird. he's in a ring right?
the second one, nice job with the gas mask! the head could be slightly bigger though.

The third one, good job on the detail! the left eye is bugging me a bit :P haha
also work on that skin tone! its hard to nail down though.

keep it up!!! go go more updates!! :D

Thanks toastertoaster, appreciate the feedback.

Yes, he's in a ring. I see what you mean about the perspective, it was intended to be a vertical support with canvas draping away on either side, but I can he how it could look like the ridge of a tent, in which case the perspective would seem weird.

Now you mention it, you're right about the head....too small a cranium me thinks.

Think I've fixed the eye in the third one, it was too small. Thanks for encouraging me to go back to it, I decided to make a few corrections and add some more detail and a background. Worth the effort.

Something I'm working on that I started today. Inspired by the current Medusa CHOW, but I shan't be posting it there as it's not a full body character and the standard there is just way too high these days.

Finished it today. Still lacking something, but struggling to put my finger on it. Have to admit to using a manipulated pic for the background.
