Stoat
November 4th, 2007, 09:44 AM
The claw guy from yesterday is the best thing on the page. Very bold and graphic-y; nice clean colors. Transparent color tends to look "dirty" when it's heavily worked. At least, I can't seem to get the hang of it.
Keep going!

That fat kid
November 16th, 2007, 01:49 PM
Hey Doctor,
This is a nice start to a thread. Lots of mostly realized work with lots of good choices. However, your fundamental drawing skills are lacking, as in your solutions for how the lighting falls on the figure and how the anatomy works, specifically how the musculature affects the visible surfaces and planes.
Start working longer on the beginning steps of the drawings, the linework, the proportions, blocking in the shades in a logical way. It'll go a long way to helping to finish a piece.
Also, spend as much time drawing from life as possible. It's critical.

hey, while I like the claw guy, i have to disagree with stoats respectfully as i think that your still lifes are very well done, the time and attnetion you put into them really shines through, the texture on the orange and apple both are great and so is the lighting :)

hey man i love this sketchbook, but for the stiff life humans a little tip i can offer is start with light contour lines and once youve got that mastered then the shading only comes easy. for critiquing just work on those contour lines and try depth in shading, ill keep checking in to see your progressing. hope this helps :rocker:

March 23rd, 2008, 07:04 PM
Hey!
I like the one on top of this page, the textures and colours are nice. Your faces seem a bit weird sometimes, but that may also be partly because of deliberate distortion. The monster sketch show some great anatomy, you seem to have that down pretty good already. Funny thing: the clip on my drawing board looks EXACTLY the same as yours, the ridges, the curves and all. But that's just details, your work shows progress, your digital work especially. Good job on the texures!

lennon
July 4th, 2008, 01:40 PM
Hey, great work!
Keep going with the foundational drawing, and you'll see how it affects everything. One thing that I would do is to forget for the moment about the rendering (you do that pretty well, but it robs you time to practice on the bold figure, you should only focus in doing thousand of figures with the only concern of their equilibrium and their proportions). I like the direction that you're taking non of the least.
You do well in dividing your studies into head, hands, and simplify figure. As you're going already in that direction, I can't say anything but "keep going", and "your work looks terrific" (it does!).
RokasButkys
July 7th, 2008, 05:50 AM
lennon - Thanks, thats the help i needed.
These were done before lennons advice, since that im drawing lots of figure without rendering.

Hi, lots of studies you've got here, some nice stuf!
I think you have some good skills with digitall painting, the last face study looks good.
I would suggest using even more textures.
i would also like to see the pictures a little bigger, some of them are too small.
keep it up.

September 28th, 2008, 01:23 PM
I agree with that comment, definite improvement.
I think you should do some more anatomy studies. Also, it might seem odd but painting some environments might actually help with your figure stuff.
At the very least it will give you something to situate them in, providing a context for the character.

i prefer the second on post 159. It's got the right amount of contrast to say what you need to and relates more to his expression on his face. Now days everyone seems to put way more contrast than they need, its that pesky image> adjustments > auto contrast button I tell ya. Nice work man, your studies are soooo much better than your earlier posts.

Hey Rokas,
Extreme improvements since I last posted like 2 years ago. Your drawing skills have really come along.
I'm digging that you're working in traditional oil, it's looking pretty good. Right now you're drawing with the paint, not making the actual physicality of the paint work for you. Since paint has the benefit of actually existing as opposed to just being colors on a screen, it provides the opportunity for some neat tricks that'll make your life easier when using it.
It's thickness can be manipulated to your advantage with a few simples things in mind. Thicker paint comes forward, thinner paint recedes. Both literally and visually. Thick paint catches and reflects more light and therefore can be used in the light areas to great effect. For this reason, you want to save the heaviest application of paint for the most important areas. You've done this well on the girls face on her cheeks, nose, upper lip and whatnot, but there are areas which counteract this well thought out application in the background where clumps of paint catch light and become visually heavy where I assume you'd rather them not be, such as the edge of the hair, or on the right side in the ambiguous colors. These heavier applications of paint also read as harder edges where they probably shouldn't. This brings me into edges, and using them to adequately direct the viewer where to look. Normally, the eyes on a portrait tend to be the selling point, so make sure you use an economy of edges and really define all the little important parts so there's no guessing about where we should be looking. One more thing about the eyes, save the actual white of the tube for the wet highlights or you can flatten things out quickly. Namely, the whites of the eyes tend to be a bluish grey instead of bright titanium white, as I'm not seeing any cast or form shadows on the eyeballs, just a flat shape of white.
Just to ease my own thoughts, any negative things don't mean I don't like the painting, it's well drawn and shows good color theory. I just know you can make the next ones even better.
~Andrew
