Hey guys, just wanted to let you know, I'm not slacking on this, the last 3 days have been a WIP for me, I should be finishing soon on the SP I'm working on. It's something that ties into my personal life deeply, so hopefully I will be able to show this SP when it's done. I'm excited, hopefully I can post it very soon. Take care guys.

Nice work people. cire600, looks awesome, great technique, I might have to try that sometime. crazy paper too, looks almost like cardboard of some kind.
Here's mine. I think I need to get more contrast in there, but the conte doesn't like to stick to the guache background.

uuuhhh.. crazy Ilex is back. Wild... (so.. what's gonna be your next SP challenge?)
Jhibbs - kicking ass at the same rate, friend. Lovely work. My next one WILL have a gun. ANYONE care to join me for a DUEL? :machinegu
Jeff Gran - uh.. yes.. contrast. Although more work to the rendering would do you good i think.Play light and shadows... you know.. keep em comin'
BH - i don't know your secret but.. YOU'RE SMILING! And that's a rare to you lately.. so... welcome back ;)
:xx: :chug:
endregan - mate, try to simplify the shape. Work only with straight lines, make it look.. low poly. Use a marker or something that will force you to think the line twice before drawing it since you can not erase.
Also.. place a lamp with strong light on a side and create a big contrast on your face - light and shadow. The try just to reproduce the big "splashes" of light and shadow. 2 values only.
Your main goal shoul be to improve your FORM, the drawing should have a 3d feeling, and to clean your line (it's a bit hairy if you know what i mean)
also...
There are severall tutorials for beginers on the forum related to SP. Jon Foster covers the axis, light shadow, KChen has some, Andrew has a nice approach... dig a little.
Looking forward your next!

I've been soul searching the last month and an epiphany struck me tonight. I couldn't help but smile and smile wide. It felt great. I think I understand why I do these self-portraits now, it's to share moments like this with you guys and to save it for myself.
http://www.snitzerart.com/images/spod/spod200.jpg
Oblio - Indeed, it is extremely rare to see me smiling. My job requires me to smile all the time, even to assholes and any other prick that comes into the bar. But these last two were genuine, I think I'm finally beginning to understand some things.
Endregan - Thanks bud

Hey BH that smile looks good on you!! :D Your face looks a little off center "imo"; good stuff BH can't wait for more.
Groover - nice to see a new face around here. good work as well
galvatar - holding the mirror you are a trooper i must say. i tried that before and it didn't work to well for me hehe.
Oblio - nice one it is pretty good. you know what i think you should try doing. Maybe you should try not focusing so much on your eyes nose and mouth so much and build up your values equally. That is what my instructor told me amognst many other bad habits i need to correct. I like your attention to details!
off to school and draw all day/night

J.Mac - thank you so much. I'm way before that i think, but the next one.. will be for you - values study.
I'm just beginning here. I didn't had much time to draw lately and now i'm back to basics - i just want the form to read well and clean up my damn line - i need some confidence in my hand. I need just a LOT of exercise - it's not a "learning" thing it's a training one :D
I'll keep at it though ad try to follow your example too. Thank you.
Galvatron - uh.. holding the mirror in one hand.. you should be proud too. Great one.. whre's your next? Come on ANDREW DOES ONE EACH DAY!!!!
Groover - ah.. lovely light mood and all.
BH - oh.. my friend.. if this is how you smile all day.. then.. tell me... how do you manage sanity? :D Come on.. you cand do more of those. Whre's your tongoue? Show me the tongue! :D :chug:
Jhibbs - ah.. GREAT MAN. fix that net and post more. Boy.. i'm glad you're still at it !

Galvatron- I don't know if you are going for a true observational 3D approach or just a 2 dimensional- stylized approach. If you are looking for a 3D approach= you need more form, most of the piece is around the highlight tone area(except in the hair). I would push your natural tendencies and work with your style. Keep it up.
Oblio-thanks for the compliment. Pay attention to keeping your pose the same. That might be why the left side doesn't match the right side of your head. Shoulders would be nice. When you don't work the whole piece, body parts can seem detached. Watch the foating body parts. All of the figure relates to each of its parts. If you work all over the figure/drawing, everything will fit better and make your process easier.
Lets see some more.
Groover McNab- Nice color. Needs a little more darks. Simutanious contrast=darks directly against a lighter tone. This will help render definition. Keep em coming.
jhibbs-It is nice to see some experimentation. Make your darks a little darker and push your highlights. Basically needs more time.
Krank em out.
Blackhawk- you tend to neglect the neck/shoulders. Work around you pieces more if doing quicker work. Balance. Huge smile-good to see some smiles. Needs darks.
Good to see you kranking them out.

Jhibbs - Hot damn, these are awesome man, truly. The last few were an incredible bunch. The form flattens in spots in the last few, but overall the effort is beautiful.
Adam - Thanks for the critique. The last one I didn't really like, I fudged it up completely, but I felt so good, I think it captured my excitement, just a raw quicky.
Endregan - Long story, very long story, it involved a month of absolutely wrenching my guts until it hit me like a Mack truck. My days felt like weeks, weeks felt like months. It wasn't a fun time, I won't really talk about it, but it was profound. I found myself feeling 1,000,000 times afterwards. I'm riding on high right now.
Oblio - lol, the expression is priceless, hand is fudgy, but the look, aahahaaa.
Everyone, incredible work, keep it all going.

ok time to make some comments.
BH - what can i say? you have skills!
R_M - thanks for the comment, i wish i could see your work so i could comment on it....
Adam Carnes - a quick one i see, not bad though
Groover - i like the expression, it is funny :) your right eye seems to be off a little "imo"
endregan - good work i see some improvement from your other posts. try to watch your proportions, try measuring the distances between your eyes and ears, and other parts. the top of your head seems alongated (sp?) try drawing what you see not what you think you know. good work keep them coming!
Jeff Gran - yay! you have more than one marker now... hehe good stuff there, i would like to see more contrast with your markers kind of like your sanguine sp, there is good contrast in that one. that might make it more interesting.
Jaku - i like :D

J.Mac, thanks for the comments. I'll try for more contrast with the markers. I guess I should leave the highlights white.
Endregan, I did a quick paintover of your last SP. This is what I think you should be striving for. Not that it, or I, am perfect, but I think you need to quit drawing lines and draw shadow shapes. even if you just do blocky forms in black and white, if you get the shapes right, you'll be surprised how the image will jump off the page. so my challenge to you is to do a portrait without any lines. even the hair. just draw the shapes of the highlights and darks you see. try it.

jnorish - not bad, it is a good start. you should try mapping out your face, measuring the distance between your eyes and so on. you can use your pencil to also help get the angles of your face aswell. :D
roger - nice portrait! next time you post, could you make your image a little bigger so i could see some of your strokes and lines. i really want to see how you do your sp it is really different than mine.
hed|lamb - you have such an interesting way of doing your sp's. it is neat to see what you do!
ilex - great style! i like how you have smooth confident lines (not like mine at all) :thumb:

Jnorish, mine is just an after shower thingy, I don't have it that way, your hair looks like you had cut it this way, do you?.
J.Mac, thanks! I think the main difference is that you're using the side of the pencil for shadows which I don't usually do, it looks very nice and I should try it more often.
If you want to see bigger sp, you can look at my older ones (I have them on the daily section of my site), for instance:

endragen - thank you, i try to do different expressions but that isn't always so easy :D nice sp you are improving more everytime. just don't forget to measure everytime; also use you pencil or what ever to see if you can get the angle of your features. that always helps to. great work keep'em coming!
jaku - cool chit, i like your colours. i am just learning about colours and mixing them so seeing stuff like this is very interesting to me. the only thing i see is that your nose is a little out of place, almost an after thought or you made a big change.... me like nun the less
blackhawk - is that pencil i see?! i like seeing people brake out of the norm. :thumb:

head|lamb - you know what? i htink you are the only one here who can get away with doing sp's like yours. you rock:rock:
beatnik - the blues are cool definatly (sp?) helps gives the image a set mood and temp. if you do any more like that try using more subtle differences in some of your colours... heh what do i know i am just thinking out loud. good stuff!
jnorish - not bad, i like doing 3-quarters view but i always mess them up. try using diregramatical lines, and draw what you see not what you think you see (know). draw on!
roger - thanks for those images i really enjoyed looking at them :D nice sp it is really calm looking when i see it i feel relaxed.
duracel -your style is great too. ah man i just love seeing everyones style and the way they do ther sp's. i like them both you second one is my favorite of the two.

WARNING_blabfest :P
j. Mac-i am one who prefers the split primary pallette, meaning a warm and cool of each primary:
>6 main colors- alizarin crimson/cadmium red, cadmium yellow/lemon yellow, and pthalo blue/ultramarine blue
i also have a few neutrals (black, raw umber, raw sienna). For this one i believe i used all of them except lemon yellow and maybe pthalo blue.
Why i use Split Primary Palette:
this is because for the most part, there arent many completely temperature neutral primaries; meaning, camdium yellow is closer to red, while lemon yellow is closer to blue. this means if you dont pick the right colors, you could be dulling them unintentionally, and to mix the brightest colors, you pick 2 colors that lean towards eachother. Example: trying to mix a vibrant green, you would use lemon yellow (leans towards blue) and pthalo blue (leans towards yellow) if you had used cadmium yellow instead, it would have dulled the green (it contains red, and as you know, if all three primaries are present, colors start to become neutral) this is not NECESSAIRILY bad, but it can be if you dont realize youre doing it.
As for your rut, for alot of artists it takes a long time to make the transition from rendering everything as a collection of features (surface designs) to rendering everything as small forms on a larger form. One thing that helps is to try a sculpture of your head, i did this awhile back with some sculpey.
Dont get too discouraged, youre doing well and this isnt about making good pieces, its about improvement. Look at some of your older pieces and see how far youve come
heres tonights, charcoal, turpentine, and rag on canvas board:

R_M, heh, nice shiny metal :). i really like those pen and ink ones, theyre great! your hair makes you look like Jim Morrison ;)
J.Mac, thanks! dont get discouraged, that last one is my favourite from you so far. ive been in a slump myself, which ius why ive started doing these SPs. i just cant bring myself to put pencil to paper so i thought id give the painting thing a try. so maybe you could try doing something a little different, maybe try doing some pen work or something?
roger, strangely enough, i wasnt angry at all, just concentrating deeeeply ;)
jhibbs, thats so dramatic, yummy. speaking of pallettes, is there a way to replace photshops default pallette? ive thought several times of how useful it would be to replace it with a 'proper' set of colours.
anyways, enough talk, heres todays. im still messing around trying different ways of doing this. this one reminds me of keyths early stuff.

ive been thinking about becoming a portrait artist lately, so i decided to change my daily SELF-portrait into a daily portrait. If you dont think they should be posted in here anymore, lemme know and I'll start a new thread.

capt. harlock - wow lots of sp's that is good work. glad to see you joining the party :D
jhibbs - you know I don't mind you posting those here. keep it up you are doing good stuff!
endregan - wow:p thta looks good i must say! but it looks like you have a bad case of the floaty head illness :D just remember to always imply a neck. but other than that you are adding more values and getting your features to look more accurate, even though i don't really know how you truely look. keep it up!
grooover - you lookk tired in that sp, but it looks good as usual. i like how you do your colours.
lumei - welcome! those are nice portraits, i like the bottom left the most.
good work everyone!! draw on!
here is mine eh it is ok i guess. at least it resembles me

Hello. :) Pretty new around here. These self portraits and Android's are so great! I couldn't resist giving it a go myself. I've done very few self portraits and none for a long time. I'm always a little suprised when I look in the mirror, I never look like I think I do (if that makes sense...) so self portraits are challenging. :p

Done in PS with my trusty wacom. It's suprisingly close to how I really look!
