Hey guys, just wanted to let you know, I'm not slacking on this, the last 3 days have been a WIP for me, I should be finishing soon on the SP I'm working on. It's something that ties into my personal life deeply, so hopefully I will be able to show this SP when it's done. I'm excited, hopefully I can post it very soon. Take care guys.

September 1st, 2003, 04:42 PM
Awesome work so far people, really nice stuff being posted here :D
Brain - that is interesting how you did your sp. is it done on just textured bg? a little more darks and lights would be nice "imo"
BH - i can't wait to see your WIP
jhibbs - nice to see you are back up and running :)
Jeff Gran - nice 2 sp's. i like how you used a mixed variety of materials. i do that sometimes too.
keyth - your style is really smooth and relaxed looking. me like
Well great work everyone, keep it up. I will post my sp's in a week or so as soon as i get access to the internet besides from the schools comps.... :(
September 1st, 2003, 09:30 PM
Thought I'd share a self portrait I did today.
Its black marker and some white gouache.
September 1st, 2003, 09:50 PM
Just finished an SP last night. My first one using painter. Thought this thread looked like the the best place to post this thing and maybe get some crits.
Everyone's work looks good btw.
keyth, jhibbs - Nice and moody. Did you guys use PS?
cire600 - Nice combination of materials.
Anyway, here's mine.

Damn... you Keyth Bebop - you locked the August thread... and.. well.. i admit, i'm retarded.
This is Aug. 31
JASON - please - don't - i haven't the time to breath lately, let alone drawing - all I manage to draw i upload here - so you can tell i've been bad boy.
It's also hard to keep it going all alone - lucky i've got you guys.
I will increase the rate... i WILL...
(this was done while my girl was getting dressed, i had to go - i would love to have the time to spend more on it- 10-15 min)
September 2nd, 2003, 05:45 AM

that purple is killin me but i'm too tired to fix/finish it
oblio hi! so glad to see you back!
bh can't wait to see your latest one
jhibbs i've really been enjoying your latest portraits...they seem more sophisticated or mature or something than your older ones...i can't quite find the right word for it...
everyone else great job...these are some really interesting portraits
September 3rd, 2003, 10:38 AM
ilex-thankyou, that means alot; this is the first time ive painted without reference and not thrown out the results.
keyth-thanks, i decided to try all month without reference since the first few went good.
didnt get to post this last night since our internet was down...
September 3rd, 2003, 02:36 PM
Nice work people. cire600, looks awesome, great technique, I might have to try that sometime. crazy paper too, looks almost like cardboard of some kind.
Here's mine. I think I need to get more contrast in there, but the conte doesn't like to stick to the guache background.
September 3rd, 2003, 08:29 PM
internet acting funny again, heres tonights
September 4th, 2003, 07:54 AM
think I got my server troubles sorted out.
please let me know if I am back with you...
September 4th, 2003, 02:11 PM
I have to laugh when I think about how this one came about. It's a story just for me, but the lessons I learned were great.
September 4th, 2003, 03:41 PM
awesome bh !
September 4th, 2003, 05:02 PM
crap crap crap - but i thought to revive the spirits in this area a bit :p
uuuhhh.. crazy Ilex is back. Wild... (so.. what's gonna be your next SP challenge?)
Jhibbs - kicking ass at the same rate, friend. Lovely work. My next one WILL have a gun. ANYONE care to join me for a DUEL? :machinegu
Jeff Gran - uh.. yes.. contrast. Although more work to the rendering would do you good i think.Play light and shadows... you know.. keep em comin'
BH - i don't know your secret but.. YOU'RE SMILING! And that's a rare to you lately.. so... welcome back ;)
endregan - mate, try to simplify the shape. Work only with straight lines, make it look.. low poly. Use a marker or something that will force you to think the line twice before drawing it since you can not erase.
Also.. place a lamp with strong light on a side and create a big contrast on your face - light and shadow. The try just to reproduce the big "splashes" of light and shadow. 2 values only.
Your main goal shoul be to improve your FORM, the drawing should have a 3d feeling, and to clean your line (it's a bit hairy if you know what i mean)
There are severall tutorials for beginers on the forum related to SP. Jon Foster covers the axis, light shadow, KChen has some, Andrew has a nice approach... dig a little.
Looking forward your next!
September 4th, 2003, 05:29 PM
About 20 mins in photoshop, AND while holding a mirror in one hand.... mother would be proud....
PS (could someone let me know if it actually works, since it is my first post. ta.)
September 5th, 2003, 06:09 AM
did this one last night.
September 5th, 2003, 07:39 AM
I've been soul searching the last month and an epiphany struck me tonight. I couldn't help but smile and smile wide. It felt great. I think I understand why I do these self-portraits now, it's to share moments like this with you guys and to save it for myself.
Oblio - Indeed, it is extremely rare to see me smiling. My job requires me to smile all the time, even to assholes and any other prick that comes into the bar. But these last two were genuine, I think I'm finally beginning to understand some things.
Endregan - Thanks bud
September 5th, 2003, 12:59 PM
Hey BH that smile looks good on you!! :D Your face looks a little off center "imo"; good stuff BH can't wait for more.
Groover - nice to see a new face around here. good work as well
galvatar - holding the mirror you are a trooper i must say. i tried that before and it didn't work to well for me hehe.
Oblio - nice one it is pretty good. you know what i think you should try doing. Maybe you should try not focusing so much on your eyes nose and mouth so much and build up your values equally. That is what my instructor told me amognst many other bad habits i need to correct. I like your attention to details!
off to school and draw all day/night
September 5th, 2003, 04:41 PM
J.Mac - Thanks.
Here's today's effort. Still a WIP, might update later today.
September 5th, 2003, 08:28 PM
hmmmmm still havent got the internet fixed, this is from my roommates computer. mixed media on paper:
September 5th, 2003, 10:23 PM
September 6th, 2003, 12:50 AM
update of last image I posted
September 6th, 2003, 05:44 AM
J.Mac - thank you so much. I'm way before that i think, but the next one.. will be for you - values study.
I'm just beginning here. I didn't had much time to draw lately and now i'm back to basics - i just want the form to read well and clean up my damn line - i need some confidence in my hand. I need just a LOT of exercise - it's not a "learning" thing it's a training one :D
I'll keep at it though ad try to follow your example too. Thank you.
Galvatron - uh.. holding the mirror in one hand.. you should be proud too. Great one.. whre's your next? Come on ANDREW DOES ONE EACH DAY!!!!
Groover - ah.. lovely light mood and all.
BH - oh.. my friend.. if this is how you smile all day.. then.. tell me... how do you manage sanity? :D Come on.. you cand do more of those. Whre's your tongoue? Show me the tongue! :D :chug:
Jhibbs - ah.. GREAT MAN. fix that net and post more. Boy.. i'm glad you're still at it !
adam - pure dope man.
So.. at promised.. this one is with guns!
:oh.. i have to watch again Cowboy Bebop.. i LOVE that series!
September 6th, 2003, 06:50 AM
.... I would if I can just get my mom off the computer for a couple of hours.... damn her ebay addiction.....
September 6th, 2003, 01:41 PM
Someone said my last one was a lil murky so I went for something brighter today, but not really happy with it. Just get the practise in i guess.....
September 6th, 2003, 08:01 PM
Galvatron- I don't know if you are going for a true observational 3D approach or just a 2 dimensional- stylized approach. If you are looking for a 3D approach= you need more form, most of the piece is around the highlight tone area(except in the hair). I would push your natural tendencies and work with your style. Keep it up.
Oblio-thanks for the compliment. Pay attention to keeping your pose the same. That might be why the left side doesn't match the right side of your head. Shoulders would be nice. When you don't work the whole piece, body parts can seem detached. Watch the foating body parts. All of the figure relates to each of its parts. If you work all over the figure/drawing, everything will fit better and make your process easier.
Lets see some more.
Groover McNab- Nice color. Needs a little more darks. Simutanious contrast=darks directly against a lighter tone. This will help render definition. Keep em coming.
jhibbs-It is nice to see some experimentation. Make your darks a little darker and push your highlights. Basically needs more time.
Krank em out.
Blackhawk- you tend to neglect the neck/shoulders. Work around you pieces more if doing quicker work. Balance. Huge smile-good to see some smiles. Needs darks.
Good to see you kranking them out.
September 6th, 2003, 08:16 PM
still using my roomates computer >:O so not much time... bbl
September 6th, 2003, 10:18 PM

September 7th, 2003, 12:18 PM

September 7th, 2003, 02:17 PM
Adam Carnes, are you sure that is nothing wrong with your monitor at brightness/contrast? :D
Other, good works :chug:
where is my SP ??? hehe..
September 7th, 2003, 09:24 PM
OK so I havn't finished the hair on this model yet, but frankly hair is such a fucking technical nightmare I'm not sure if I ever will :bash:
September 8th, 2003, 03:29 AM
Ben Shore-your eyes are not symetrical.
September 8th, 2003, 03:22 PM
I need an autodispline book. Anyone knows any good one?:(
Itīs not a copy jhibbs, i promise.
Cool to see some new faces (and old ones) around :)
September 8th, 2003, 05:16 PM
hehe, man we got a 3d SP in here!
finally got a good range of markers, here's my first attempt.
and one with black, white and sanguine conte.
September 8th, 2003, 08:33 PM
niec jeffy you rocking now with sps!
jaku... awesome work that face looks great!
adam u still crazy at it ! :) sloppy dabs on the last one but shows form, i like it
Ben that is a cool model id like to see hair and the expressions move animated or something :P
trying at it again;:
September 9th, 2003, 06:48 AM
Oblio, here is more tongue for you bud :D
Jhibbs - Hot damn, these are awesome man, truly. The last few were an incredible bunch. The form flattens in spots in the last few, but overall the effort is beautiful.
Adam - Thanks for the critique. The last one I didn't really like, I fudged it up completely, but I felt so good, I think it captured my excitement, just a raw quicky.
Endregan - Long story, very long story, it involved a month of absolutely wrenching my guts until it hit me like a Mack truck. My days felt like weeks, weeks felt like months. It wasn't a fun time, I won't really talk about it, but it was profound. I found myself feeling 1,000,000 times afterwards. I'm riding on high right now.
Oblio - lol, the expression is priceless, hand is fudgy, but the look, aahahaaa.
Everyone, incredible work, keep it all going.
September 9th, 2003, 10:22 PM
Not sure if I'm gonna finish this one. Just messing around with painting a different expression.
Blackhawk - Nice work. I'm gonna have to mess with the palette knife more.
September 9th, 2003, 11:05 PM
Great work everyone! I am sorry for posting these pieces of crap, i know i can draw better than this but i am so tired from art school wow i never have done so much drawing before in my life :o (which is a good thing)
I will comment later for you guys...
ok all of these are done around 7am before classes.

September 10th, 2003, 12:06 AM
September 10th, 2003, 04:23 AM
Haven't been around much due to server probs, still fighting with them, hope you guys see anything I post....
by the way therehave been some amazing portraits lately. I think the level has gone up since summer.
J.mac/ you are improoving a lot!
Groover/your pictures are really cool! they look like speedpaintings.
Endregan/ try to work more with shapes and less with lines. it help me a lot.
Jhibbs/ interesting direction you are going. it looks like you are having a good time doing your portraits!
BH/ you know how to pick a nose!
Adam/som many different styles! keep it up.
these are a couple of the better ones I have done these days.
September 10th, 2003, 06:24 AM
September 10th, 2003, 08:13 AM
ok time to make some comments.
BH - what can i say? you have skills!
R_M - thanks for the comment, i wish i could see your work so i could comment on it....
Adam Carnes - a quick one i see, not bad though
Groover - i like the expression, it is funny :) your right eye seems to be off a little "imo"
endregan - good work i see some improvement from your other posts. try to watch your proportions, try measuring the distances between your eyes and ears, and other parts. the top of your head seems alongated (sp?) try drawing what you see not what you think you know. good work keep them coming!
Jeff Gran - yay! you have more than one marker now... hehe good stuff there, i would like to see more contrast with your markers kind of like your sanguine sp, there is good contrast in that one. that might make it more interesting.
Jaku - i like :D
sorry no sp this morning i woke up late, but i am doing one after i get out of class tonight.
September 10th, 2003, 08:23 PM
Well here is the end of the day and finally had a chance to do a sp :D yay! I really want to improve my skills so any and all help would be much appreciated! thanx!
September 10th, 2003, 09:50 PM
thanks for all the feedback. I know I am not the greatest at this but im here so you have to put up with my face morping as i discover what the heck im doing!
you guys keep me going
September 11th, 2003, 12:39 AM
Me, as some kind of....thing man.
September 11th, 2003, 02:06 AM
J.Mac, thanks for the comments. I'll try for more contrast with the markers. I guess I should leave the highlights white.
Endregan, I did a quick paintover of your last SP. This is what I think you should be striving for. Not that it, or I, am perfect, but I think you need to quit drawing lines and draw shadow shapes. even if you just do blocky forms in black and white, if you get the shapes right, you'll be surprised how the image will jump off the page. so my challenge to you is to do a portrait without any lines. even the hair. just draw the shapes of the highlights and darks you see. try it.
hehe now that I see both...it looks like I've put some of me into you unconsciously as I painted. ohwell. :)
September 11th, 2003, 02:23 AM
hed|lamb - that is sweet.
September 11th, 2003, 10:42 AM

keyth - glad to see our face around here again, your work is always so good!

blackhawk - you know what i always think of your work! i really like how you can capture your features so well
NoUseFrAName - welcome aboard!
endregan - thanx for the comment, your portraits are starting to look better already. just keep the measuring and seeing what you really see up. you should read i.was.ink's notes from the art center. they are great!
oblio - wow that is a great perspective me like :D how did you accomplish that view? i think i want to try somehting like that as well.
well here is another 20 minutes of crap, this one is worse than usual. for some reason my mind keeps wondering and i can't focus on one thing right now  guys i don't know what to do i feel as if i am getting worse!!!!!
September 14th, 2003, 09:49 PM

btw keyth keep it up your colours are better since the last time i was around!
September 15th, 2003, 12:34 AM

September 16th, 2003, 04:16 PM
Great stuff as always everybody!
Playing with my hair:
These were done with my cheap pda:
I promise the next time I do a self portrait it will be a painting, not a pencil sketch.
September 16th, 2003, 11:04 PM
September 16th, 2003, 11:06 PM
20 min sketch right after haircut. I really need to work on my faces.
My hair kinda looks like yours roger!
September 16th, 2003, 11:31 PM
jnorish - not bad, it is a good start. you should try mapping out your face, measuring the distance between your eyes and so on. you can use your pencil to also help get the angles of your face aswell. :D
roger - nice portrait! next time you post, could you make your image a little bigger so i could see some of your strokes and lines. i really want to see how you do your sp it is really different than mine.
hed|lamb - you have such an interesting way of doing your sp's. it is neat to see what you do!
ilex - great style! i like how you have smooth confident lines (not like mine at all) :thumb:
keyth - i have to agree with her :D
ok here is eh.... my 25 minutes of crap
September 17th, 2003, 02:34 PM
Damn many damn good selfportraits these days!
jhibbs, especially like your without-mirror ones!
Here is me again ... with nothing special:
September 17th, 2003, 02:56 PM
Jnorish, mine is just an after shower thingy, I don't have it that way, your hair looks like you had cut it this way, do you?.
J.Mac, thanks! I think the main difference is that you're using the side of the pencil for shadows which I don't usually do, it looks very nice and I should try it more often.
If you want to see bigger sp, you can look at my older ones (I have them on the daily section of my site), for instance:
http://rtallada.dreamers.com/imatges/diaris/sp20030718.jpg and http://rtallada.dreamers.com/imatges/diaris/sp20030624.jpg
The painting I promised:
September 17th, 2003, 04:47 PM
yes, I did have my haircut cut that way, sorry for the mixup.
I'm thinking of doing these on a semi-daily basis.
too bad this barely looks like me, damnit.
September 17th, 2003, 09:20 PM
Thanks for the welcome guys. I tried another one tonight.... this one more for an emotion than anything. I feel like chit!
September 17th, 2003, 09:30 PM
J.Mac, ilex, all, thanks and don't stop the spods.
September 18th, 2003, 12:11 AM

Blackhawk: you roxor my boxorz
J.Mac & endregan: keep at it, its cool to see your improvement guys.
Oblio: your last few SPs have been awesome :D
odd to see so many B&W ones recently huh?
September 18th, 2003, 12:34 AM
OK, OK, OK....it's still brown:p . but at least it's a little different huh?:D
September 18th, 2003, 03:24 AM

September 18th, 2003, 01:17 PM
I had a really bad dread where CA was closed down and I had to contact Jason....
September 18th, 2003, 04:39 PM
I'm going through a pretty boring time right now. I'll try to spice these up as soon as possible. Great work guys.
September 18th, 2003, 07:02 PM

Jmac- hehe keep it up your doign great i like your expressions
keyth - yeah try not using brown and be totally crazy...itd be fun for you and us!!! keep it up man..
heres one i did today
September 18th, 2003, 10:57 PM
endragen - thank you, i try to do different expressions but that isn't always so easy :D nice sp you are improving more everytime. just don't forget to measure everytime; also use you pencil or what ever to see if you can get the angle of your features. that always helps to. great work keep'em coming!
jaku - cool chit, i like your colours. i am just learning about colours and mixing them so seeing stuff like this is very interesting to me. the only thing i see is that your nose is a little out of place, almost an after thought or you made a big change.... me like nun the less
blackhawk - is that pencil i see?! i like seeing people brake out of the norm. :thumb:
R_M - not bad at all for 10 minutes, it is good to see you around here again!
ilex - your style of drawing is cool :p i want more!
keyth - you just keep'em coming that is all i have to say!
nil - :D smile nil let those worries go and laugh :ahha:
head|lamb - you know what? i htink you are the only one here who can get away with doing sp's like yours. you rock:rock:
beatnik - the blues are cool definatly (sp?) helps gives the image a set mood and temp. if you do any more like that try using more subtle differences in some of your colours... heh what do i know i am just thinking out loud. good stuff!
jnorish - not bad, i like doing 3-quarters view but i always mess them up. try using diregramatical lines, and draw what you see not what you think you see (know). draw on!
roger - thanks for those images i really enjoyed looking at them :D nice sp it is really calm looking when i see it i feel relaxed.
duracel -your style is great too. ah man i just love seeing everyones style and the way they do ther sp's. i like them both you second one is my favorite of the two.
great work everyone :chug: , i want more!!!! draw on!
September 18th, 2003, 10:58 PM
25 min or so on this one. Maybe one day they will actually start to look like me.
September 19th, 2003, 12:20 AM
finally got the internet back... damn blasterworm was on our network. first one with ref, second without. more to come.
September 19th, 2003, 03:42 AM
another fast one...can't concentrate long enough lately.
J.mac/ it's good to be back! your expression sp's are nice! I never post my own cause it is so much harder to draw smiling people. they lack a bit of bg though.
Endregan/ getting better, but try to keep the number of pencil strokes down, make the ones you do really count.
jaku/ great colours on the last one! the way you rendered the beard is rather clever.
jhibbs/ the card concept is cool
beatnik/ I know the feeling and the road is still very long for most of us...
bh/ the 2nd one is rather different from your usual stuff.
everyone else good job!

jhibbs i love the card
September 19th, 2003, 02:50 PM
@Hedlamb: I'm totally in awe of your last three paintings, really really good stuff !! If you could do that with oils or something you'd be making a lot of money. Please keep it up, expand it to bigger pictures, you have lots of talent dont waste it !
September 19th, 2003, 04:54 PM
Ilex, I'm really enjoying your last selfportraits, but this last one is amazing! Great work!
jhibbs, I love the card one!
September 19th, 2003, 05:47 PM
This is sort of me. I need to get my features right, but meh. 20minute sketch, just practising for a sp painting I'm going to do for school later this year.
September 19th, 2003, 10:01 PM
jhibbs, again, great sp's, the card one is really great, but the other one too.
R_M, like yours too :)
September 20th, 2003, 02:02 AM

September 21st, 2003, 12:40 PM
Well I finally got a likeness so at least I know something is going right. Maybe a few dozen more and I'll get a grip on these things. Like I mentioned, self p's are still new to me but ya gotta start somewhere!
September 21st, 2003, 03:43 PM
September 21st, 2003, 06:53 PM
well I've been slacking. only been digital painting for a month and i'm so freaking slow. this thing's been keeping me busy
anyway, some comments
roger - the one with the colors is very cool. actually I like the scribbly pen one as well.
ilex - nice style in all of your sps. last one reminds me of delerium from sandman.
everyone else - good job, it seems like everyone is improving.
here's my latest.
September 21st, 2003, 09:19 PM
This is exactly how i felt after watching "Fight Club" this night.
completely out of mind
September 21st, 2003, 10:28 PM
Groover yours are always amazing... keep it up
duracel: yours are full of life... i like that
jhibbs awesome as usual

roger that last expression is crazay!!
ilex you insane.. love your paintings!
everyone else great job keep it up!
ps dont think we f orgot about you keyth!!! show us some non brown! give us some bluee hehe
September 22nd, 2003, 05:58 AM
digital version of former pencil one
I have a lot of diffuculty being free and impulsive when using the wacom, I don't know why but pencils, pastels or whatever feels so much more creative.
roger/ cool stuff man! you last one is very nervous!
jhibbs/ brush pens you say? mmmmmmhh looks interesting. how many did you use?
Groover/ abit of self promotion never hurts ;) your last sp has a nice facial expression.
Duracel/ the first rule of fight club is you do not talk....:bash:
Ilex/ different from most peoples sps in a good way.
beatnik/ try to mirror you sps, that will bring out everything that is wrong with them. it is the bedst way to see if it really looks like you or not (something to do with your brain...
endregan/ the last one is the best up till now.
September 22nd, 2003, 06:56 AM
R_M - haha, yeah I guess. Just to show I've at least been doing something ;) and plus the painting on the link is frustrating the hell out of me.
endregan - thanks.
I'll try to squeeze in a couple more before the month ends.
September 22nd, 2003, 11:16 AM
i also posted this in the life drawing forum, but I'll give it a shot here too... it's a SP, but inspired from a homeless man I saw by the train station in the rain... the homeless is hard to watch, and even more difficult when you make a prolong eye contact..
September 22nd, 2003, 11:29 AM
This is me moments before I scream in frustration and smash my tablet through a window.
September 22nd, 2003, 01:43 PM
beatnik - i know what you mean! the best thing you can is just keep doing no matter how mad or frustrated you get. hey atleast it is sbetter than mine.
ochre face - that is really cool looking :thumb: what did you use to create this one? the nose is a little funny "imo" but the rest is nice. post more of your sp's
R_M - good stuff you just keep them coming! you might feel constrained by the tablet b/c it is a small square shape?!
endregan - looking good :D keep it up they are developing more everytime.
duracel - 2nd rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club!!
groover - ah good facial expressions, more more!
roger - that is interesting the way you did yours. what tool is that?
Great work everyone keep the coming!!!
well here is my five minute crap that i am just not in the mood for. but i thought i would post it anyways. i have been distracted with a bunch of of dumb stuff right now
September 22nd, 2003, 04:12 PM
it was painted in Oils 16x20
i have a funny big nose :^)
September 23rd, 2003, 01:13 AM
heh this one ended up kinda squished and stretched and not really looking like me...still trying to get used to this whole "painting" thing. do i have enough values? too few? *shrug*
roger: too much coffee? ;)
endregan: looking good, i wanna see some BLACK in there, be bold :)
J.Mac: keep 'em coming
September 23rd, 2003, 02:11 AM
I am trying to mix them up a bit, different colours, sizes ecc.
jmac/ nah its pretty okay in size, it;s an A5 the A4 was way to expensive.
Nil/ ah...now I get it, I hadn't realized you were pierced!
beatnik/ don't do it, they are expensive.
ochre face/ great pice!
September 23rd, 2003, 02:05 PM
Groover McNab, good job, maybe you could try with more light for a more dramatic effect?
duracel, great movie, it's the first time you've seen it or you get the same feeling every time you see it?
endregan, good! I think you're improving your proportions.
R_M, great stuff, I like the way you draw the nose.
Ochre Face, great mood.
Beatnik, I usually just insult it, but hey, if you're rich! :)
J.Mac,, funny expression. The tool is surprisingly called 'nervous pen' or something like that in Painter 8.
nil, you seem angry in that painting. :)
September 24th, 2003, 12:41 AM
September 24th, 2003, 01:09 AM
Finally finished my personal little project. Now back to sps. Here's a quickie from tonight.
Also, thanks for everyone's comments. I'll comment on my next post, gotta run...
September 24th, 2003, 08:09 AM
groover - nice colours! can't wait to see your other ones
jhibbs - oils yay! i wishi was able to use oils right. they look good, i really like the second one the colours are more appealing. do you mix all your colours from 3?
roger - nervous pen.... hmm how is painter 8's mixing qualities?
nil - red :D yeah that is a good mood you have set with your colour choice. i am impressed with how you didn't make the whites of your eyes white. most people forget that there eyes sit back in the face a little and get shadowed
ochre - cool
well here is some more crap i did..... i seem to be getting worse as i draw more. i feel as if i am in a rut. do you guys here have any ideas to help me get out of this funk!
September 24th, 2003, 07:02 PM
j. Mac-i am one who prefers the split primary pallette, meaning a warm and cool of each primary:
>6 main colors- alizarin crimson/cadmium red, cadmium yellow/lemon yellow, and pthalo blue/ultramarine blue
i also have a few neutrals (black, raw umber, raw sienna). For this one i believe i used all of them except lemon yellow and maybe pthalo blue.
Why i use Split Primary Palette:
this is because for the most part, there arent many completely temperature neutral primaries; meaning, camdium yellow is closer to red, while lemon yellow is closer to blue. this means if you dont pick the right colors, you could be dulling them unintentionally, and to mix the brightest colors, you pick 2 colors that lean towards eachother. Example: trying to mix a vibrant green, you would use lemon yellow (leans towards blue) and pthalo blue (leans towards yellow) if you had used cadmium yellow instead, it would have dulled the green (it contains red, and as you know, if all three primaries are present, colors start to become neutral) this is not NECESSAIRILY bad, but it can be if you dont realize youre doing it.
As for your rut, for alot of artists it takes a long time to make the transition from rendering everything as a collection of features (surface designs) to rendering everything as small forms on a larger form. One thing that helps is to try a sculpture of your head, i did this awhile back with some sculpey.
Dont get too discouraged, youre doing well and this isnt about making good pieces, its about improvement. Look at some of your older pieces and see how far youve come
heres tonights, charcoal, turpentine, and rag on canvas board:
September 24th, 2003, 10:41 PM
wow lots of action going on..
great oils jhibbs keep at it!
jhibbs your latest is awesome. turpentine with charcoal? thats crazy :P, ive never tried that before. i still havent played with oils yet. looks great!
thanks for encouragement R_M
Groover - thanks maN!!!
nil - for sure ill try it...
ochre- awesome painting
jmac- sweet sketches :). u and i will have to start painting our faces soon :P
September 25th, 2003, 04:15 AM
R_M, heh, nice shiny metal :). i really like those pen and ink ones, theyre great! your hair makes you look like Jim Morrison ;)
J.Mac, thanks! dont get discouraged, that last one is my favourite from you so far. ive been in a slump myself, which ius why ive started doing these SPs. i just cant bring myself to put pencil to paper so i thought id give the painting thing a try. so maybe you could try doing something a little different, maybe try doing some pen work or something?
roger, strangely enough, i wasnt angry at all, just concentrating deeeeply ;)
jhibbs, thats so dramatic, yummy. speaking of pallettes, is there a way to replace photshops default pallette? ive thought several times of how useful it would be to replace it with a 'proper' set of colours.
anyways, enough talk, heres todays. im still messing around trying different ways of doing this. this one reminds me of keyths early stuff.
September 25th, 2003, 04:42 AM
Here's tonight's quickie. Tried to do one with standard lighting.
September 25th, 2003, 05:03 AM
September 25th, 2003, 05:28 AM
ilex/ you have some blood on your mouth
groover/NIce one! I don\t know why but I really like the last one. not very helpfull am I?
nil/ you should have worked more on the last one. it has an interestiong contrast/focus point between the nose piercing and the eye.
Endregan/ yuo are welcome, now post more stuff!
Jhibbs/ aarrgghhh! I always have to dobble check your name!
thanks for the colour lecture! good read. and the last one is great!
can't say I am happy with this one, but that's my effort for today.
I had a lot on my mind lately, and this is going to be my last post in a couple of weeks.
I am leaving for Florence to look at the various schools down there and see if any of the programs have what I am looking for... what do you guys think? I started a thread in the school section here at CA but I feel it kind of got sidetraked and very little interesting came out of it.
Anyway see ya, and let me know what you think!
September 25th, 2003, 06:12 AM
Beautiful work guys. I've been in a rut the last week, trying to climb out of it.
September 25th, 2003, 06:25 AM
Here's my second one tonight. That might not happen very often :D
R_M - Thanks, I got lucky with the colors on the last one, I'm fairly pleased with it. Good luck school hunting.

jhibbs - you know I don't mind you posting those here. keep it up you are doing good stuff!
endregan - wow:p thta looks good i must say! but it looks like you have a bad case of the floaty head illness :D just remember to always imply a neck. but other than that you are adding more values and getting your features to look more accurate, even though i don't really know how you truely look. keep it up!
grooover - you lookk tired in that sp, but it looks good as usual. i like how you do your colours.
lumei - welcome! those are nice portraits, i like the bottom left the most.

October 1st, 2003, 01:14 AM
i've been doing alot of quick stuff, just something fun to get away from hw.
October 4th, 2003, 03:39 PM
Hello. :) Pretty new around here. These self portraits and Android's are so great! I couldn't resist giving it a go myself. I've done very few self portraits and none for a long time. I'm always a little suprised when I look in the mirror, I never look like I think I do (if that makes sense...) so self portraits are challenging. :p
Done in PS with my trusty wacom. It's suprisingly close to how I really look!
