Hi, I'm an animation major from Edinboro University. I've been in a slump with drawing lately and found new inspiration through this site. I love my animation and cartoons but try to keep my fine arts up. I want to better myself further so any crits are very welcome. So happy to find a community like this !!!!!!!

i love the first and the last picture of your second post... the first has a very interesting and dynamic construction, the last ist beautifully colored (i suck at watercolors, too impatient ^^).

the landscapes seem to fall apart for me. i'd wish less empty space and less difference in the direction of the strokes.

your study drawings have a dark mood, that differs much from the style of the rest of your work. I'd appreciate to see a few pictures in that cartoon- style, but in just that other, dark mood, for more variety.

Thanks for the advice, I've actually never really realized how most of my cartoonish drawings all have a more upbeat tone. Definitely plan to update with more variety in mood, and get in some more landscape work.

Here's some more though from my sketch books and some digital doodles till I can update with those improvements.

Man, your stuff kicks ass! I also love your wide range of style - a nice mix of real life and cartoons. Also, the lighting on that first picture - just stunning.

You got nice stuff going on in here. Your cartoon style is very lively. Like somebody said early, very different from your life drawings! Gotta watch out in your anatomy, in which some of your drawings are off. Remember the proportions of the body, that's the key to all. To memorize it, a good way is to do studies such as skeleton and muscles.
Anyways good stuff in here, since you are an animation major, I would love to see some of your 3d stuff because I have been doing 3d too! Well, keep it up!

Tea Drinker
November 4th, 2007, 01:15 AM
Kat_Warrior: Thanks glad you're liking my stuff

Maestro Andres : Believe it or not I actually don't have much in the way of 3d animation. I took the basic course for 3d to understand the fundamentals and the lingo that comes with 3d animation, but the facilities here are not so great, lightwave and flash, thats about it. I have a focus more on traditional animation as the direction for that here is extremely strong. I have though played around with zbrush a little; I'll try and post some models as I get to know the program better. But yea I see what you mean on the anatomy ^_^ definitely need to keep watching out for that, need to do more hand studies for sure.

While I'm here though, heres a couple sketches of my fellow animation classmates, a digital doodle, and pastel study from a class still life.

You use color rather wonderfully. Your figure drawings need to be tightened up a bit. The tonal qualities are there, but they look a little sketchy as opposed to an academic finished drawing. Try working on your quality of line. Your color work uses bold colors and bold, uniformed strokes. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the wonderful comments! Really love the suggestions and am working on them. I'll try and get the scans in soon, my life lately has been consumed with animation. I'm in my final year as an animation major and really am trying to get a really good animation ready for the winter festival. So I won't be sleeping till winter break. But here are a few things that I have and I'll get most recent stuff scanned sometime after I finish working on my animation tonight.

Your faces could benefit from more construction. Right now they're somewhat lopsided and wonky. I'd recomend you do some more portrait work and study facial anatomy before attempting this anime style.

These are looking very nice Michelle...definetly miss drawing with you in the Boro. I think the fluidity of your pieces is what keeps me looking. Very powerful lines and a weird concept/animationmajor/fashiondesign style. Truly a gift to have a range of areas!

hi teadrinker, lovin the work in particular the life drawings and cartoons which i think are brush pen? im using those but their too expensive for a full range, anyways really like your life drawings and they all seem pretty accurate to me but I think you could work on a couple for a bit longer just to give them a bit more punch, especially the woman next to the lamp. something seems to be missin from it that i cant quite put my finger on, maybe just a little bit more line work other than that their pretty tight.

Nice sketchbook, you've got a lot of variety in here. Good life drawings, too. I would say overall, try to pay more attention to proportion. Some of your figures are looking mushy. Try blocking out a simple skeleton gesture first that establishes where the joints and bones are in relation to each other.

Hey there!

I really enjoyed looking at what you have going on here. The progression since just last November is very impressive. I especially liked the figure drawings in your last post. The forshortening and movement are excellent, and your line quality on the blacklines is superb.

I agree with KelsM about paying attention to proportions in your figures, but that sort of general advice is something we can all use. In particular, watch out for faces. Consistantly I noticed very long noses and low mouths. Fine for monkeys, not for people. A general proportional rule is that the eyes fall halfway down the head. The bottom of the nose is halfway between the eyes and the chin. the mouth is halfway between the bottom of the nose and the chin. Just shortening up your nose a bit, and raising the mouths will help a lot.

You're doing some great work, and I really do look forward to seeing more of it.
Keep at it!

KelsM Nice sketchbook......try to pay more attention to proportion. Some of your figures are looking mushy. Try blocking out a simple skeleton gesture first that establishes where the joints and bones are in relation to each other.

You know I really haven't thought much of it but I think I really don't put enough thought into the mechanics of many of my subjects. I will definitely be doing a good amount of more studies with more thought process behind the relationships between joints and bones. Thanks for the comment and suggestions

I think I'm having some old habits that don't wanna die lol but I totally agree. Faces tend to be a weaker point in my drawing knowledge too. I really hope after these few weeks are over I plan to do a ton of facial studies. I really appreciate this input

Been super busy lately as this is the two week crunch line for my animations as one is due finished by Monday and the other by next Friday. My life has become class, eat, sleep, and animate :xpld:

The first one is just a sketch I did the other day in art history and the other was a concept for the Shapeshifter CHOW but didn't get the time to go further on it. I plan to go further though once I get some time. I was going with a woman assassin to hawk type of thing. Oh and I posted my current update on my animation that is due Monday. A little info behind this is it's one part of four parts. I'm part 3, and this will be compiled with the other parts and played to a live orchestra (erie philharmonic). It's all painted in corel, each frame file named, compiled in monkey jam (an animation program) then edited together in windows movie maker, and all on one laptop  there seems to be a lag issue in some parts that we can not figure out so I will be recompiling everything tomorrow in aftereffects as we think it's a rendering issue with windows movie maker. all comments and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Been an eventful last few weeks. I am now a full fledge animator! well one with a diploma now that is. Been helping fixing up my family's house while getting things together so I can send portfolios/reels to animation studios. Currently working as well with a buddy on getting a portfolio site up. But anyway figured I would post some of my paintings and progress that was made on the "My Forest" animation.

kingcoyote - Thanks for your wonderful comments, they really do mean alot.

smuli - your very right on the ankles and feet it's a bad habit. But gonna work on it for sure

Still a work in progress, but this actually showed at my University Spring film show. Hope to get more progress done on it soon but have been slowed down due to my stylus has disappeared in the chaos of moving home. So now I await a new shiny one via mail.

first two are studies, and the last one is actually something I digitally painted for a good friend based on her character designs.

Tony Kain: the teapot is ceramic. It was a painting exercise in creating the impression of a ceramic texture but I think it ended up being more a study in color XP

Heres some recent works. The first is a commission on the concept of a phoenix mage. I had some fun goofing with brushes on it. The alien one is actually a fanart in support of my good friend's webcomic Trying Human. If you like aliens, area 51, and abductions this is a good comic for you. She had been having a hard week and I made it to cheer her up. And the last one is a quick study of a shell my sister brought back from the beach.

Recent watercolors. Some of these were entered in auction.

If anyone has any suggestions on better ways to photograph watercolor paintings, it would help a ton. I have real issues in photographing these pieces. Much of the color always tends to get altered or lost. Makes me wish we were taught about color photography and not just black and white in Photography 101 :P

Those watercolour pictures are awesome, you sure master the medium. I really like the designs and use of colour on the surreal females. Joker's bent knee seems to be a bit too high though. Hope to see more of these watercolours, they're the most impressive thing i've seen in a while.

Thanks Smuli, I really enjoy making the surreal fantasy females. I see also what ya mean on the Joker. Really wish I hadn't sold it to my friend lol maybe he'll let me fix it up.

These are just some recient things. First is a digital painting baised off of a pencil sketch in my sketch book. Been really trying improve and find my niche in my digital painting. Second is a watercolor I did in between doing some commissions. And the third is a collaboration commission where my friend did the sketch and I did the paint job on top. great sketchbook! I love the comics, especially your comic anatomy is great. The biggest problem I see here is with your anatomy from life. You and I share the same problem: drawing at two different scales, a smaller proportion for torso and head, and a larger one for the abdomen and legs. You should digitally cut your life sketches in half, and redraw them, with a larger and smaller version, just to see the difference.

In practice while life drawing, you should try thirty second, preperatory sketches, before going onto a longer, rendered drawing. Make sure the top half and bottom half really fit to scale.

The watercolors are excellent, post more of those. Also, the latest digital woman is really well done. Her chest may be a little low, and her cheeks a bit flat, but she's got character.

I've made it one of my resolutions to update way more. So here's a small dump of more recent things.

the comic pages and covers are my recent colorist work. The line work is all Joshua LaBello but all the color work is me. I currently am working as a colorist for a Cult Horror comic based on the Leprechaun and the warlock; which will go to print late spring, early summer. ^_^ I love cult horror so I' having a blast with it.

The black and white one is a study I did today from a stock photo image.

The two environmental pics where small attempts. I'm still working on teaching my self to to environmental paintings. Still a long ways to go in that department.

the last bunch are more recent commissioned character paintings.

Ive also in the last month or so been using a livestream channel to let people see me work live and for me and Joshua to work on the comic in a virtual studio. the site i use lets you live stream free and I think it has alot of potential for art demonstrations or mentoring. I wanna post about it but not sure what thread would be best. Any suggestions would be great.

If anyone wants to check out my live stream channel its http://www.mogulus.com/digital_paint_tv

Been busy working on comics this week but here's some stuff I've done on the side.

The first is a study still in progress from a stock photo. The next is a quick character painting of a friends rpg character for the game Exalted. And the last three are thumbnails of environments. Still working on teaching myself environment painting so I figure I'd start with just simple black and white thumbnails. Still a long way for me to go though.

Stuff I've done on the side of getting coloring work done. only 4 more pages to go on the first volume of The Warlock vs. the Leprechaun and I just got started working on a Michelle Obama biography comic.

But anywho these are some hand studies, a few color studies of environments, a human study ( still having issues in the arm area), a conceptual piece done for a nividia contest (still wanna work more into it) and a enviromental painting (got some really great help on vent for it. but I still have a long way to go in learning to do good environments)

Coloring comics has been taking up most of my time blah. But I'm getting faster so soon I'll be outputting alot more work I think. So heres some current workings.

First are a couple of watercolor paintings I'm working on. No where near finished but figured why not post some WIP action.

Can't post whole pages of what I'm working on but the first sunset one is from a comic idea me and the inker have been thinking of doing. I think its cheesy to use lens flare but it seemed to work pretty well for the panel. The next 3 panels are from the Michelle Obama biography comic I currently have been working on. sadly not allowed to post full pages of this as well, but allowed to post a few panels. I really like how the old man came out. Then the western is a test page we've been working on. Dunno how I feel about it still.

And the last two are from two OC sessions with Jove lol. its very relaxing and fun to say the least.

More to come soon as I plan to join up in the Dominance War competition among other things

Mmm... tea! :D

Your characters have improved lots in both creativity and production. Well done! I think you can still work on your values a little more - darker darks, bright highlights, and richer colours maybe? You're so close! The values are just a little bit too close together in a lot of cases. Lots of progress going on in here!

Continue to grow and learn! Gave you some stars to keep you from going hungry :)

Wow you've made some awesome progress on this page alone!

Your photo studies are looking great and your sketches are awesome, as are the Al.chemly and digis! Really dig the watercolours as well, any chance of some more of them? Hell everythings great!

Really nice job on your CHOW piece too, the lightings so cool!

So sorry not to many crits apart from working of some more anatomy(which we could all do really!).

cheers

outfit variations on the shaman invoker.

also did some work on the trent invoker. Totally gonna do a bunch of variations on that as well. I'm thinking the female invoker with the shaman theme won't stand out as much as something more whimsical like a trent type creature person.

been slammed with alot of work lately. Just picked up another colorist gig with a sci-fi series called TekWars; so I've been working alot on that lately. Written by William Shatner so as a Trekkie I am stoked!

Plan is to get ahead in pages tonight so I can focus on Dominance War.

1. Section from a page in Tekwars I did the color work on. And yes the script was specific that the colony ship was rusted :P

2 - 3. Some silhouette action

4. A Character painting piece I'm working on for a good friend. Still a work in progress.

So some years later since my last post in short: I have worked many freelance contracts, traveled to Korea, and again returned back to the states to where I now work full time as a concept artist for a new studio called City State Entertainment. Worth every minute of the 14+ hour plane trip back to the east coast. I'm now working around alot of hardcore talent and industry vets which has seriously motivated me to get back into posting online. So here I am back in conceptart.org to reconnect and get back into constant updating and bettering myself further.
Not to mention I miss the action packed-ness of this place. hooray!!

Here are some recent things for now and I'll be posting more of my current things soon.

Any feedback as always both good and bad is welcome. Thanks for lookn.

Wow. That's some kind of improvement from your old work to your new. The color schemes are so much more unified now.
Congrats on the full time job. Did you keep travel journals? I can't wait to see more of your work.
btw. Thanks for the advice on my painting. I think it's exactly what the work needs.

I plan to post scans from my travel sketchbooks. especially the one in Korea even though half of it is me writing Hangul to communicate cause my Korean was very poor. I also have some fun sketches my Korean students made in my book. Korean girls love princesses.

I really look forward to more of your work as well. the painting is really coming along<3

Wow. Just wowza. I loved the first piece to the last on here. The lines, the colors, the values! The understanding \o/ the compositions, the concepts! The variety of those staffs is wonderful. The expression behind your characters and the choices of outfits and their colors is great. I'm impressed and gonna keep an eye on this~ Do you have a deviant art too?

It's inspiring and overwhelming all the good stuff in this thread. I like the layered textures in the side-lit figure you did using the little reference picture. That's some pretty nice Photoshop work Those trees are very cool too with their geometry. What other softwares you use besides Photoshop?

Great colors. Be careful with black in the shadows; it can sap the life out of what would otherwise be a vibrant color scheme.
