Please don't ask, 'can someone host for me?' in this thread.
If you are going to find people pm them privately or come onto IRC and find members willing to host.

I'll write up a 'how-to' on using Open Canvas later, but for now this is for the experienced users. I hope this goes to good use.

3am(est) myself and aaron decided to introduce craig to open canvas. He had some problems with the controls and crashed once but he seemed to have a good time, and we had a fun time watching.

Prom, Jynko
I drew the statue and buttgirl from reference. Jynko's drawings stopped saving for some reason. OC can be a bit buggy.

http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/oc/backgirl_prom-anons.wpe
Prom, anons
I can't remember who else worked on this. I drew the girl on her back from reference.

http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/oc/ref_prom-anon.wpe
Prom, anon
Early wpe. I showed someone (can't remember who) how I paint from reference. I wasn't very used to OC at the time, and I'm still not.

http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/oc/faceswiz_prom-rin.wpe
Prom, Rinaldo
Some of crappy faces of mine and a wizard by Rinaldo.

http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/oc/greyface_prom-donk-cimax.wpe
Prom, Donkeyslayer, Cimax
That's who the filename said anyways. I drew the grey face, but not the colors on it.

---

Note: I work a bit different in OC than in PS. In PS I use the brush modes, curves and color tweak tools once the painting is finished to balance parts of it. The brushes are different to. But the basics are the same. Put down a base color, add the important features, refine, turn your head upside down, refine, tweak.

Jorn, drop me a line on MSN or email and ill send it to you. Its really small.

I drew the statue and buttgirl from reference. Jynko's drawings stopped saving for some reason. OC can be a bit buggy.

Which version of 1.1 do you have? I used to have 1.1 68, which was buggy. I now have 1.1 72 or something, which is a bit better. Let me know if you want the newer version.

Pencil Soldier
September 10th, 2003, 04:43 PM
wpe is a file type used by Open Canvas. To make one, you simply open up a wpb file(which is an open canvas file) and 'export' it as a wpe file. Then, someone else ( or yourself) can 'import' it into Open Canvas and watch you paint.

I love looking at these! More people should post.

And so I'm not hypocritical I will post a .wpe file from a session I had with a friend of mine who was new to OC. She didn't draw much. In fact in the end the only thing she has on the page is the head of a cat.

I'm currently addicted to Everquest... You'll find that out too.
Enjoy!

Are these sessions usually just loosely thrown together in IRC?

due to the overwhelming response i'm gonna put up the connect IP# which is (127.0.0.1) if that doesn't work try (192.168.0.100) that way if you guys wanna connect, i'll have it loaded and just strat drawing. i am usually on between 8:30pm-12am nightly and that would be um east coast time (i'm n florida) plus various times during the day. it's gonna be a crap shoot, but hey you may never know you may just connect. i gotta get a IM program so this can be easier. hopefully this works out and thanks for the response. i will answer my PMs later. again send one (PM) if you got a question. thanks!

edit: i'll see about getting a yahoo messenger screenname so the sessions will be easier to set up. thanks!

Hello,

i need some help concerning OC 1.1 ( b72)
When i or someone else hosts , it works fine , but the things that i am drawing , can't be seen by the other participator. ( so neither when he hosts )

Does anyone have a solution for this or know the cause?

Thanks,

hmmmm...many seem to have asked about .oes files but nobody seems to answer...so i'll take it upon myself to explain.
Basically, .oes files are the same as .wpe, only difference is that that's the kind of file that's being used from version 2 and up...if you want to see them you either have to get any of the more advanced versions (you can get a month trial or sumthin of that sort...after that you keep all the program's features..except that you cant save anything)...OR browse around the internet for the oCViewer.
Hope that clarifies everything

This thread is awesome. I just watched almost every WPE in this thread. Some really great stuff (Prometheus, that one with you and "sin" is just incredible).

Lately me and my friend have been doing speed paints in OC so I thought I'd post a few of our sessions. (Sadly, her computer is busted right now, so no speedies :( ) These are all between 20-60 minutes. I'm always the one on the right, jent4ii is on the left.

well this has gotta be the coolest forum ever!!! big ups to conceptart.org!!!

i was just looking around the forums, and came upon the opencanvas thread! and i figured out what it does, and im so so so happy for this program. it sux that the latest version has to be bought, but how else are they gonna make any money. so heres my dilema...

i have a .wpe file ready for everyone to see, but when i upload it to the web space that i do have, it doesn't let me upload .wpe file types or something, cuz when i do upload the file right when it finishes it just disappears??? where do i upload my .wpe files. i actually tried to zip the file, and see if that would upload but that also didn't?? so im pretty clueless...

i do have the final still image, so im not leaving u guys withought anything. (off a reference pic, of a dude)

uh, just a question: how do those online sessions work (specifically, how do you start one)?

edit: i just found out how to start one with open canvas 1.1, now my question is if open canvas 3 still has this feature? (doesn't seem so)

Sadly, 1.1 was the last version that supported networking. I don't know why they took that feature out, as it's one of the coolest things about the program, IMHO. :/

Hi guys,i have a bit of a weird question..
i downloaded a bunch of .wpe files from here, and then watched them of course. i clearly remember a fascinating one. i watched it once, and thought it was Davi's spooged.wpe... when i went back to watch it again,i saw that it wasn't that file... now, please, i feel like i'm going insane, because i can't find that file nor on my computer nor in this thread, just can't find it anywhere.it jdissapeared..
i would be most gratefull if you tried to help by reading the description below, and told me which file it was if you recognise it.

It was a drawing of a guy being nailed to something resembling a tree, with a large sword in his chest. The tree was filled with what looked like spirits, skulls mostly.
on the side was little girl throwing something like magic at him. the image was in perspective from below, and there was a bright moon i think. The whole piece was in tones of blue and cyan, but quite dark, and with most light coming from the magic and the lightning allover the pic.

Thanks to anyone who tries,i'd really love to see the event again, and prove i'm not going insane ;)

I haven't been keeping up with the DSG so I'll post something in here to make up, and to show what I have been doing instead. I have only been painting since this christmas when I got my first wacom, and so of course I have a million things to learn. I don't really have any money so I have been using OC for all my work. So far I have created a few things decent enough to post, and have learned a few things about the program.

The first thing is that if you save an image in OC's native format (.wpb) all the event data is also saved. This means that even if you work on a peice several times before you finish the exported WPE will still show everything from start to finish.
The undo feature in OC is annoying sometimes. even though the program records your every action you only get five levels of undo per layer. Also undos are recorded in your wpe so people can see your mistakes.
The brush dialog in OC is odd, but very usefull once you figure it out.
http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/OC_brush.jpg

You can save a custom brush in each of the five tabs. Just adjust your brush how you want it and hit the little disk in the upper right. Below the disk is another neat feature of the brushes, if you click the gradient your brush will have a fuzzy border. This is good for blending colors. The two boxes next to the gradient control how wacom pressure sensitivity effects your stroke. Turning the "three dots" on means opacity increases with pressure. The other box toggles wheather pressure effects the size of your brush (harder =larger). Once you have your five brushes saved you can change to them either by picking on their tab, or you can scroll through them with the 'e' and 'r' keys. Of course your brushes arn't always going to be right for the size your working at, luckily though you can dynamicaly change brush-size by holding down 'alt'+'ctrl' and draging left/right until the brush is the size you want.

Lastly you can change some of the programs text to english by selecting english under the help menu, and also hotkeys are listed under show-help in the help menu.

Here are four WPE I've done that are ok...

http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/prey2c.jpg (http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/prey2c.wpe)400KB
I did this with one of Prometheus's critters as referance.

http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/dart_frog.jpg (http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/poison_dart_frog.wpe)685Kb
I did this with referance from a photo. My colors are washed out compared to the real thing, All its colors were fully saturated... even in shadows.

http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/head_tut_01.jpg (http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/headtut_01.wpe)464Kb
This started off as me following Fred's first head tutorial, but my skills were insuficient to match the tutorial so this is really just a paint with ref.

http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/package.jpg (http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/package.wpe)171Kb
This is off the side of a pack of crackers. Mmmmm complimentery colors...

PS: Narya, I haven't seen that one around here, but I think there are a couple I havn't watched. Try checking some with funny names, The names are generaly uninformitave at best.

I messed around with OC some more and have a little more information about the brush dialog.
http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/OC_brush.jpg

first the three colored sliders. These control the blending effects with the watercolor brushes and don't have a counter-part under the other brush types. I am not entirely clear on all their functions, but I have found that they can be useful in certain situations.
The red slider controls 'effect'. As far as I can tell it modifies how the other two sliders act.
The green slider controls 'enveffect'. That is it effects how much the brushes color is changed by the BG color. If you use a brush with only the green slider it acts like a smudge brush.
The blue slider is for 'penetrate'. It controls how much the brushes color cuts through the BG color. Using an only blue brush means your paint will not mix with BG colors. This can be usefull when putting in details near edges, as it avoids dragging white into your subject.

The best way to understand how these three act and interact is to play around with them and see. They arn't always convienent, but they let you do some things which are very difficult to achive otherwise.

The last thing in the brush dialog box is the little white square in the bottom right. This controls stylus pressure sensitivity. Draging the diagonal line to the bottom-right means you must press harder to get full effect. This is useful for getting lighter lines when sketching.
Pulling the diagonal to the top-left gives full pressure effect with little effort. Good if you have a very light touch.

There, thats everything about the brushes. Using these controls OC is much more versitial then I thought it was when I first tried it. You can achive alot of effects like those in high dollar programs, and you get features like event recording and network mode. Its a great little tool.

OMG OpenCanvas is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life! I love PS, but OpenCanvas(OC) is like when I first got excited about photoshop and my tablet. Plus you can record it and drag a few poor bastards through the process alongside you!!!! WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THAT!?!??! Anyways ... my proxy shoots down most connections, so I cannot collaborate, really. Anyways this is what I came up after playing around with it a bit.

I think people will enjoy seeing this, I did it with an artist friend of mine and they asked me some of my figure drawing techniques and I demonstrate a lot of them here. Hopefully others will find it helpful, it helped me a lot too actually! Learn by Teaching they say...

ok jens let me clear it up for anyone else who gets confused with your shortcut....

to increase your brush size theres a 2 ways i know:

1- in your brushinfo window where your tools from brush/pen to erase and changing of the size of your brush, there are 6 tabs that you can have to save your own set sized brushes. all you do is go to your tab change your size and other options and click on the small disk icon to save it. and once you have all your 6 tabs filled...you can press E and R to scroll through those tabs at anytime.

2- the other way that Jens is trying to show people is by pressing, CTRL+ALT it then will show a cross and just by clicking and dragging from left to right will change the size of your brush. dont press ALT first ...press CTRL then ALT.

ok thats it! have fun ppls

it sorts an error like #^{#!!! 10060 (the only real thing is the 10060)

Could you help me plz?
What kind of things could make open canvas not work?
could it be something like a port problem? what do i have to type in?

thx a lot !!

ryu - ive had problems like that many times. the only things that come to mind that make that error come up, is a possible firewall issue, or maybe if you have a router..might have to tweak that, or maybe trying a different IP address.

just mess with that stuff and itll work eventually,i had a friend who wanted to network, and we got that error, he had to do a bunch of stuff that i didn't know anything about...and he ended up gettin it to work. so thats pretty much all i can help u out with. just tinker with it...until it works.

Does anyone know how to get the proggie to vary line width rather than transparency? The buttons on the brush window don't seem to do it.

Big-Dave
March 30th, 2004, 07:41 AM
If it's using a tablet go to the brush window and de-activate varying pressure (it's one of the 3 buttons underneath the disk icon) OC sets pressure and pen width variation on be default, so you should be able to deactivate the pressure to get just line width.

If you've got a mouse then hard luck, OC doesn't have line variation for that

oh, and about the Alt-Gr thing. It's a feature that you only get on some keyboards I think. I used to have a keyboard that didn't have it, now I've got one with it and it doesn't always work the same as normal alt. For one thing, I have to use "left alt + enter" for full screen when watching videos. And it does triger the size variation in OC, same as ctrl-alt

barontieri - im really stoked that your digging this program. the opencanvas thread hasn't been real alive lately! your defintly giving it a oomph! please more please!!!! im learning a lot from these.

...how long did these take you?!?!

(if you have anytime, would you want to network one of these days? i know id learn a lot more if we did)

I was offered the opportunity to review OpenCanvas 3 Plus ... very nice. I review quite a few products and felt that this products ability to play back events really set it above lots of the other tools ... especially as a teaching aid ... a lovely tool for seeing other artists thought and work processes. The link to my review is below. If you like open canvas also check out Dogwaffle ... it has some very nice brush tools. As well as some great concepts.

http://kickstartnews.com/reviews/graphics/opencanvas_3_plus.html
I trust I'm not breaking any rules posting this review link. If so I'm sorry.

I have some problems /w tablet projection, when i want to use a brush it`s always painting about 400 pixels or so to teh right... with shapes (squares) it works right...
when i've just used another prog before, it´s working for a few seconds but then again the aforementioned problem occurs again.
I run win2k, and use a intuos2 with the newest drivers...
anybody experiencing the same problems?

it was a problem with my Dual Monitor

o and koshime, diggin your work! like the concepts, wish you could do a finished piece in oc.

koshime
June 9th, 2004, 03:40 PM
hmmm, thats a good point.

My main difficulty is trying to find some staying power to work through an oc session from start to finalised piece...but you know, OC has its limitations...and after I breached the 30 minute gap, it ceases to be a speed sketch for me...

What I am hoping for is to reach a stage whereby, I am able to add focused detail to one section of a picture within that 30-40 minute target for a more finalised look.

Philosophy behind this: a complete picture can be accomplished with patience and time. This may take 1-4 days. Similarly, one can produce lots of rough sketches in a day - say about 5 med concept/finsihed ones.

What if one reaches a stage whereby, it is a cross between impressionist, but has sufficient detail for the viewer to appreciate the picture for what it is, in its semi loose form.

Ergo, the minimal amoutn of strokes to convey the same evocation as a fnished piece but in a semi finsihed piece...

zombie
June 9th, 2004, 06:01 PM
koshime, that rocks !
do you use any refs for the colors ?

koshime
June 9th, 2004, 07:34 PM
if you look at the WPE, it will show you how i started.
I dont use any refs. I should though as it woudl be more believable, but i like to paint from scrath onto a white canvas then obliterate it as fast as possibel with random blotches of colour.

The trick to achieving a moderate colour tone in any painting is to achieve mid tones. (tone achieve between mixture of two colours)

And to use complimentary colours
I currntly favour Red + Yellow, Red + green, Green + Yellow
Most skies, would need a faint dash of sky blue somewhere if it is Earth based. Even a more red desert storm woudl achieve some believability with some blue.

Finaly, you need to know where to place your sun/light sources. Through some practise, I can paint a lot of interesting cloud based landscapes. If you look at some of my OCs, I do alot of clouds....even thoguh it may not take up the whole screen.

I am hoping to improve on character work, architecture and a more dynamic scene/s

here is a journey of self discovery.
I painted a random picture whilst talking to a spiritualist

I realised the picture was that of my tortured soul, fighting myself. And today, I feel better adn mroe free because i looked, drew and was able to not fight myself anymore.

Go with the flow..

as far as i've heard, only the early version of OC works well in terms of internet connection... see the first post in this thread.

OmFG!!!1 How are you guys farting out these images in half an HOUR!?!

This is like a dream come true, a whole thread of English speaking people about Open Canvas. I have a WPE for an image I created but I believe it's a bit too long to sit through and watch.

This is the image though:

http://home.comcast.net/~bissett5/springadventure.jpg

It was done in anime style specifically for a certain reason...anime isn't really my forte though.

OMG I can't get over this....this whole forum rules!

Hey all. Some great stuff coming out of here. Koshime, as usual, you're rocking that oc. WillSchnevel, awesome session there. You three kicked arse on those. Brk, good stuff as usual =) One2hit, welcome to the boads, don't be afraid to post wpe's if they're long. We can probably learn more that way.

And, without further ado, here's some oc's me and don just knocked out. First two were 10 and 15. What we did was make random lines for eachother to start from and stopped at said time. The second two, 20 and 30 mins each, we went into more color. We also replaced the random lines with blotches. I think our 30 min one is our best one. What do you think? Click on the images for the wpe. Peace

portalgraphics is the website for the company that makes and endorses open canvas. The program originated in Japan the community there is largly Japanese. In addition the artists are encouraged to submit "anime" styled artwork. If you dig around through the selected picture list www.portalgraphics.net/oc or go to the rankings list you can find hundreds of GOOD tasteful anime images that take a large amount of skill and dedication to produce. If you go through the image list you'll come across alot of garbage though.

Found a copy of open canvas 1.1b71 but
everytime i go to draw all of the tools go away.
Does anyone know what that is about?

Patch
June 23rd, 2004, 02:44 PM
Shamrock - don't know why it's happening when you draw, but if you hit the tab key - they should all come back.

Hey -I doubt it exists, but does anyone know of a converter for the oe3 files? I only have the original version (1.1) and I would love to view the event files for later versions. I'm probably SOL, but I thought that I would ask.

Yeah that works but it gets annoying having
to do that after every I click on the canvas or
Menus up top...
D'you think I downloaded a crappy version or
something?

Dunno. Never heard of anything like that before. Wouldn't hurt, I suppose, to re-download it though...
