Depends on the last name. Plenty of Jon's travel in my circle of friends.

I'm the character artist on Borderlands at Gearbox software in Plano, TX and me and a buddy who does environment art here are both going to be there. Gearbox was actually cool enough to send us so we'll see ya there.

Fantastic workshop. Now if I can only apply some of it. How did you all enjoy the workshop ? Are any of you involved in any figure drawing around the Austin area ? I recently moved here from LA and would like to find a place locally where I can draw. BTW, I work as a concept artist for a local game studio.

What studio are you at tanjaw?

I've been going to Dr Sketchy sketchgroup but its really really bad. Garbage-in Garbage-out sorta thing.. I dont think i'll be going back to it for awhile after the workshop. That would be like eating at a five-star restraunt then having your next meal at taco bell.

I'm definitely interested in finding a good sketchgroup around here or possibly starting a new one with you guys and doing it right.

I am sort of trying to start a sketchgroup, but it's way north.

Austin has a sketchgroup with a bunch of the Spacetime guys, guys from Liquid, and Sammy goes as well. It's at Genuine Joe's at 7PM on Wednesday evenings.

I am going to start attending the AVAA life drawings on Monday nights, if anyone cares to join me.

tanjaw68 - The Austin Visual Arts Association holds life drawing Sundays from 2-5 pm and also Mondays from 7-10 pm. It's only 5 bucks per session and you don't have to be a member or anything, just show up and draw.

They have a map on their site.

For you austin area folks, we don't have drawing/sketching classes at the moment (we're expanding some space here, so may have something towards mid year)...but do have evening painting workshops. Students are all professionals...mostly from austin studios. If you're interested, more info is here:http://www.geminischool.com

Just click on the events link. We also host open houses/industry nights throughout the year. Usually with demos from local artists--fun--casual and good networking. If you want to get on that invite list, feel free to email me. cynthia@geminischool.com.

Nice to hear the feedback on sketching opps around town, our students sketch every morning, but I'll tell them to keep an eye out here too. thanks! Cynthia

Great to hear of the opportunities for life drawing...thnx, all.

Did anybody get a chance to sit in on the Kevin Chen's lecture at Revelation? Kevin is an old friend and colleague of mine from Dreamworks Int. and EA-LA. I love the way he teaches figure drawing. If you haven't had a chance to take a workshop with him, I'd highly recommend it.

Hey Cynthia, what would the possibilities be of having open figure drawing sessions at some point during the week- no instructors, just students, a volunteer moderator and a model, about 10 dollars per session? AVAA has one but you guys are way closer.

Funny, one of the Sony guys called last week asking about the same thing! Yes, once our new space is finished I'm sure we can work something out--I'm hoping by March. Right now we just don't have the room. If you want to shoot me an email (cynthia@geminischool.com) I'll let you know directly when we can host a group.

thanks!

The Wednesday night sketchfests have been a lot of fun. I get pretty shaky by the end of the evening from the too goo to be true "bottomless" cup that Joes serves.

The lineup of talented professionals who come out makes for quite the riot.
