View Full Version : Inking? (beginner needs a good "pen")

So, to keep this short, I'm pretty much new to art, and I was wondering if it was eaven worthwhile for me to invest in a "good-beginners/cheap" inking pen. (keep in mind, "cheep" I don't know what they run but even $20 seems a little steep for me on my budget!)
I have been doing lots of anatomy studies, and lots of scribbleing, and dashing, and all kinds of horrible things you can do to a pencil, but I'm really interested in useing inking pens, and brushes in my work. (when I get to that level)
So, back to the point, should a beginner like myself bother getting a good pen, or should I wait?
As far as brushes go I have a few I bought at a wal-mart a few years back...

I got a old one from my Art teacher, by some blessing I managed to find one unmarred pen "head" and one handle that wasn't so crusted over with dry ink I could use it!
Hehe, I'm so happy! (I love to do stuff like that than go buy something new!)
Now I just need some ink, i can pick that up this afternoon.

Other tasty treat if you can get your hands on it. You can find them at most art stores (or a version like it) or order it online.

I use Staedtler Pigment Liner disposable pens for all my work. They could be seen as a bit pricey perhaps, since where I get them they run at about 3.50+ per pen and you have to keep buying them. But at the same time they are a little more flexible and dynamic then Rapidograph refillable pens. Especially if you use various Pigment Liner pen nib sizes per drawing, although with a little deftness of hand you can vary a single Pigment Liner's nib while drawing.
That said, you won't get a more uniform line than that from a good Rapidograh.
