I started going back to school this fall for graphic design and have begun taking my first art class since junior high...which was over 10 yrs ago...Drawing. I'm finding how much I absolutely am loving it and how relaxing it can be to draw.

Following are three of the first projects we' did in class. Feel free to comment/critique.

I added some earlier sketches/drawings to the above post, trying to keep thing chronological. Below are a line perspective drawing (which the room I was drawing was very cut up and not your every-day square room so there's several different perspective points) a picture I attempted of Victoria Beckham and my self portrait (not in final form, some things have been corrected since these pictures). The picture quality is not very good as they were taken from a camera phone, so the pictures themselves are a bit blurry. Besides that, any feedback is very much welcomed.

Your recent post seems a lot better than the first post. Victoria Beckham looks good, and I could recognise who it was straight away. However, it seems you are drawing what you think it should look like, and not what you see. Take the tattoo for example. Just is a guess, it might have been for a reason, I dunno.
You might want to try and get a larger range of tones in your drawing. Get whiter whites, and darker darks.
Keep at it though. I can't wait to see more!

If you have time, you could pop into my SB :P

I have a friend going to Digipen in Washington State who's been a great help. One of the first things he pointed out is just what you said about the tattoo and so that's one of the things that I have changed since that picture was taken. I also did a few things to correct the profile of her face (extended the nose, brought the chin back and a few other things). My instructor has the final picture so I will try and get a picture of it tomorrow while I'm in class so you can see some of the changes.

Thanks so much for your feedback! We do critiques in class but when it comes to them, so many people will just respond with "Good job" "Looks good" or something along those lines which doesn't help me to correct the mistakes that I make in order to get better. This is the first art class I've taken so any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hello Nukeya :)

As Fraz said, the newer pieces are definatly looking stronger. It seems you have erased all your mistakes in the Victoria piece which is great, but I could definatly tell it was her at the first glance :)

As for the other portrait, there are alot of dark areas in the jumper which I think you could pull into the hair in the darks. Also one pupil is white! ( I'm just nit-picking now  )

Keep it up, I hope to see more soon Nukeya :)

Thanks for the comments Hurley! The white pupil is a reflection that was there, but I think that in shrinking the picture down, you can't see the pupil anymore. I will fix that. Can anyone offer any suggestion for the eyes in general? They just look odd to me and I'm not sure what I can do to "fix" them. Perspective or something is off, but not sure how to go about fixing them to make them look right. Back to the mirror I guess! As for the hair, I have pretty light hair (lighter than in my profile pic and longer now as well) so I didn't want to add too much dark to it. I can see what you mean about the darkness of the shirt though in respect to the rest of the picture. Thanks for your feedback!

As for your comment on the eyes, it seems like you did the "one eye, space of an eye, and one eye". That doesn't really work if it is a different angle that straight on. The eyes look too far apart, which may have given it the wierd look.
They also seem like the wrong angle. They seem too flat, and have not gone with the perspective like the nose or mouth at all. If you cover up the right (our right ) hand side with your hand, just cover the right side, up untill the nose, you can see that it looks perfect!(apart from the eye being a bit too far from the middle of your face.) It just seems like you didn't really think on 3d planes.
But I am way worse that you, and I am probabaly wrong, but that is what I am guessing.

My newest project...still a WIP. Not quite sure what to do for the male's tattooing (left) nor the background. His ear's a bit low and maybe a bit too small as well, but it's still not complete. Feel free to comment!

Looks like the males nose is far too small, other than that looking good. Keep it up.
