Great line weight and quality in that self portrait! I'm guessing it is a self portrait at least hehe... nice start, let's see mooorrreee :)

With the figure watch out with shading along the edges, it will make it look more flat! With studies, you'll see the basic shapes and with squinting, see the overall light hierarchy ! blah I'm bad with explaining, but keep it up!

Great angle on the dragon! let that gold color bounce onto the creature. Differentiate the colors of the environment near the viewer and the parts farther away. Finish this one!

Come on just finish the dragon. You've got some hours left.
I really like the composition. I think it is one of the best compositions in this TC round ! Just create a nice rendering and my vote is yours ;)

Hi there!
Love those charcoal (am I right?) still lifes and other studies!
As for painting, its going along nicely! Just try to avoid unintentional smudgy edges, try to sharpen it a bit. :)

Oh and as for dragon: Same what MarkWinters told you!

May 16th, 2008, 05:12 PM
hey there fellow SSG-er! :yayca: I dig how youfind shapes thru color in that last WIP, its too bad if you dont finish it... :(

Compositionally speaking, I like how the tail's arc resonates with the direction of the wings, I think personally I would tilt the head upward on the dragon to give it more... oompf? also, I second Mark on the reflected light comment, and I'd tone down the yellow in the foreground a notch, to draw attention/saturation to the main subject; the Dragon. :)

Hi Shmaba,

Great work in here. I love what you've done with the still lifes in the beginning of your sketchbook. Your last post, of the textured horse, has an affecting and mysterious quality to it. I feel like I can smell ancient history. I'd like to see this one explored more. Keep it up.

Your life drawings are the strongest, I would suggest you do more of those. The environments are a good start, but I would suggest a little more contrast in value in that first one.

Keep it up!

Hey, sorry guys. I had finals for the past two weeks. Now that I'm graduated from high school I'll try getting my current sketchbook filled before I head off to Ringling for college. :lifedrawing:

MarkWinters
June 3rd, 2008, 02:44 PM
Going to Ringling, huh? That's a great opportunity for you! Congrats! As far as the sketches go - maybe tighten them up a bit. Give consideration to the marks you make on the page. Sometimes it looks a little hairy. I really like the bug-dude! Best of luck!

June 5th, 2008, 02:55 AM
Congratulations on Ringling!

Like MarkWinters said, be bold about your mark making - do less searching and put down lines as confidently as you can. I'm digging the skeleton king in your second image.

Keep postin'!

June 5th, 2008, 03:08 AM
Hi man, your work is awesome, very promesing.
If you want to get good as sooner as possible, stick to the figure, decompose it in simple forms, and try to draw more confident, with straight lines.
Everything looks great, but remember that painting is way more easier when you can draw as a master.

Mischeviouslittleelf
June 5th, 2008, 03:16 AM
You have great promise, so all you need to do is work up a library of reference and keep working hard. Draw and paint as much as you can and do not give in when you lose inspiration.

Sorry guys, this sketchbook has been kinda put on hold because I can't get any sketches on the computer. So all you'll see from me in awhile is digital paintings.

MarkWinters
June 25th, 2008, 01:25 PM
Fun image! Some comments for ya:

Try to keep elements off the edge of the painting. For instance the car is sort of resting on the border. Get the car up there on the page more. Make it look more precariously placed on the bridge to add some tension.

Grab some reference for the sky, road, rocks and car. I think having better informed elements could really help sell this painting.

Since all we get are digis make sure to keep 'em coming dude! Best of luck!

Sorry about not replying for so long.

I really like the breakdown of your dog's head. It's good to see you thinking about simplifying complex structures into basic forms; that will go a long way to help you construct things out of your imagination.

Keep it up, and update when you can.

Hey, long time no see. :bashful:

WOW, didn't mean to kill my sketchbook like that. I'm back and I'll try updating this as often as possible, I've already got a lot of college work that I might or might not get around to posting but here's some homework for Contextual Figure that I just finished

We had to take 4 gestures we made and re-draw them, then draw the same pose from a different angle without reference. I labeled them so you know which is what. (sorry for the lousy photo-chopping)

MarkWinters
October 1st, 2008, 10:45 AM
Lookie lookie! The prodigal son has returned! Haha Interesting assignment. I may try that sometime! I think you did a great job with the new views. I probably wouldn't have been able to call which is which (original or new).

Try and focus on your line quality. Don't be afraid to erase out a lot of the sketchy lines and replace them with a single deft stroke. When shading you seem to be indicating where the shadows are as opposed to actually rendering the shadow areas. There's a difference. Start RENDERING the shadows and avoid simply indicating.

You're doing good work dude! Best of luck in school and KEEP POSTING! Haha

hey hey! long time no see :D hows ringling for you?

one crit mainly from me: the forehead (particularly brow bone region) on your greyscale paint portrait in the last post seems too protrudent, like hes got a lump or smthg... also on your first sketch, that neck throws proportion of the character off a little!

looking forward to seeing more of your schoolwork, seems to me like its doing you lotsa good ^^

start with much larger brush strokes, Shmaba! (especially on your last one... btw your tried pulling off the hardest pair of complementaries in that color scheme. the ration of purple to yellow is usually much more purple, localised strong yellow, but thats just how i was taught it, im sure there are other ways to balance the two out.)
careful not to wash out those colors! :D

you're well underway man, friggin awesome! <3

Some sketches of eyes. I find eyes hard to do so I'll probably end up doing a lot more studies of them later.

Took your advice with this one Petite. I like how it came out but I was doing it late and got too tired to work much father into it.

I also think I should do machinery and industrial designs a bit more. I don't have very much experience with 'em, so this was just a sketch trying it out.
