Browsing the amazing works in the fine arts thread has finally got me posting some work.. I'd been meaning to post for awhile but for one reason or another I procrastinate.
(Lotsa respect for David Kassan(and all the other trad painters) unfortunately my work isn't so epic in terms of emotion and refinement)
Still attempting new things and trying different approaches.. hmm I just deleted a pile of rambling regarding how I'm not fond of alot of these, suffice to say that next time round they'll be better.
Yeah so, theres a bit of variation here, hopefully something will tickle your fancy.
Thanks people:)
Oh and I've updated my sketchbook with some recent life studies and sketchwork...

Lovely style, I dig them! 6, 7, 10 and the last one are my favorites, great feeling of depth and volume in them.

Thanks for sharing your new stuff! You're noticably more advanced with color now. I wish the photos were a bit better; you could actually fix the camera distortion just using photoshop.

Very nice work... Sometimes a little complicated color/design wise for my tastes maybe. I really love the very last one. The drawing is very nice on that and the design works well. That one and the one of the woman in the garden looking right in profile are the strongest I think.

Always nice to see you post, Lukias.
These are all fantastic,
but there is something about that last one I just love.
The drapery is handled with such ease, yet reads so well.
I think the palette also reminds me of John LaGatta a lot, one of my favorite painters.
Speaking of,
do you have a standard palette you'd mind sharing with us?

I absolutely frickin' love these! You have just the right mix of rough and polished (for my tastes anyway). You say the next time 'round will be better? Well, I can't wait!

Hey thanks alot guys, always appreciate the feedback:)
Ethax - I'd give it a shot if I had PS.. I think I'm the only member without it!.
Britton - Yeah interestingly those two have the most subdued palettes.. I think I need to let go of some of the contrasting and garish colours.
Rabid Peanut - Turner??? I'd love to see what you're seeing! Yeah I should start painting males.. (you just reminded me of a painting I finished last week.. posted below) I've stuck with women because they are easier to sell! Women and men appreciate the female form whereas men just ain't so pretty. But I'm quite keen to incorporate more males into my paintings for sure. I have a mate coming over tomorrow.. gonna put one of those massive Davy Crocket hats on him.. so he looks like a trapper. Should be interesting.
DSillustration - haha, I was dreading that question! Heres where my total lack of proffesionalism shows. My palette is a hodge podge mess of often random colours.. .I'll chuck in samples from art shops plus I use about 5 different brands(so three cobalt blues that are all different) and variations on a colour if I can't find the one I want.
My most used would be:
Raw Umber
Gold Ochre
Indian yellow
Transparent Red Oxide (Everyone should try this I think, its a 'must have')
Transparent Maroon Oxide
Cadmium red (Hue mostly)
Cobalt blue (Hue)
Leaf green
Ivory Black
Titanium white (about to try a titanium/zinc mix)
but at any one time I may have all of these on there aswell..
Maroon
Old Holland Magenta
Schevenings blue
Alizarin Crimson
Australian gold green
Spectrum Green Light
Terre Verte
..and more!
Looking over Aaron C's limited palette thread has me thinking about going back to basics for a multitude of reasons. One being that muted tones simply look fantastic but for the most part it'll teach me how to apply paint without the complication of colour/bling
:)
Jason - Sure man I'll do that. Cheers:)
Rabid Peanuts post reminded me of this which I did last week.. one of my parents friends... my first painting with a male in it.. I think.
About 8 hours all up I'd say.

Some nice work here. I like that you experiment.
one thing I notice is ( and this might be because of the camera flattening things out ) is that your lights often seem too spread out over the entire picture.
I miss the fall of light sometimes.

fuck dude. i just freaking love your style. its so damn sexy - i love the shifting textural effects you have with different thicknesses of paint... thinning and thickening all over the shop.

Wow luke, thanks for posting these. A whole new side of you. Wonderful to see. You work so loose. Fantastic to see. The one with the old man sitting by the table is really charming. Stands out from all the females :P
Keep it up.

Hey a big thanks to you guys! Cheers for taking the time to place a comment.. always appreciated.
art addict - yeah you're right... thats something I've never honestly thought about. I suppose I conciously try to balance out the works and in doing so distribute the darks and lights evenly throughout. I'll think about the light play more now. So thanks!
strych9ine - ah Cody.. thanks bud.. I'll be emailing you shortly.
David kassan - Unfortunately no.. its about 22 x 36, so far from it. Thanks.
Again thanks everyone for the kind words.
The first pre-dates everything posted and was a wedding present for some friends.
The second is a 5-6 hr life study from last week. I bought the hat recently and he was the perfect candidate to wear it. I call it: 'The Weary Trapper' ;)

I love your work and always look at it at least 2wice a week from a folder.
Thanks for the process shots. So you put some different colors( like in the colar area of blue and violet and then cover it up with different color?)
So thats why your paintings are vibrant and alive I guess:)

First time I've come across this thread. I particularly like number 5 of the first post batch in the thread. It's the honey coloured one with the girl leaning against some upright pillows. It's those top left hand pillows that do it for me - so tenderly and beautifully painted. You seemed to have organised your tonal areas better (thinking about what Art Addict pointed out) and there is a real coming together of some of the things that are working in the other works. The strength of the painting even overcomes a slight problem with the girl's hair - the color is very beautiful and takes on far more power when you organise it as opposed to lots of localised seductive dabs that are sweet in themselves but are not working with the other painting and therefore confusing them.
Looking forward to seeing more of your very distinctive work! I think you have assimilated Renoir's feel for colour and form very well and have started to make it your own.
