Great idea!
But at the moment I only see a "thanks" in the original post, shouldn't it be enabled in the replies as well? At least the original poster should be able to "thank" replies... I was gonna thank a bunch of people and realized that I can't.

Wow :) this is a really cool feature!
Just one thing I'm wondering: you can only thank the poster of a thread? You cant thank a post that is like a reply posted in the critique center as a crit?
I'm finding that most of the time the posts I want to thank are the replies to my sketchbook.
teehee :) I think if that was the case I'd be thanking half the people who stop by in my sketchbook :teeth: that would be cool :)
EDIT; I just saw that Whyatt Thrash noticed it too.. Agreed ^^

All fixed. We have a bunch more goodies to add over the next month or so. I just shared the new gallery backend to Davi tonight and am waiting on a couple fixes before we open it up for the featured artists first for testing. Progress on the galleries and new database organization is going well. More to do...much more. Just a few more weeks.

Thanks Jason! (And Davi... :teeth:)
I'm having trouble figuring who to thank.. I mean, I can thank half my sketchbook for the helpful posts.. But there are also posts that really stand out with the crits so maybe I should only thank those.. :P But then I feel sorry for all the other good posts that don't get a thank you..
Or maybe I'm just whining.. :/

MeliHitchcock and Seedling, and not seeing that attachment counter thing that you're talking about. Is it a limit to the total amount of files you can have uploaded on CA, or just a limit to how many files you can upload in one post, or what?

Try posting a reply and pressing the "Manage Attachments" button. You'll see the counter on the top of that pop-up window showing how much of your available space you have used.
Holy cow! I have a lot more space for attachments than I did yesterday! Yay, no more worrying about having to delete old art!

And by the way, I sincerely hope the thank system won't be abused, and only be used on useful posts.
If so, the "find all thanked posts by..." feature in the profile, will be very cool. If not, and if everyone just thanks random posts to get thanked in return and start a sort of popularity contest, this feature will be totally useless :\

Seedling: Not visible in Firefox nor Safari. So I'm guessing the code's not W3C compliant...

If you haven't been paying attention we added a "Thanks" button to the forum a few days ago.
Just today I've added a "Groan" button.
If someone you think is a bit of an idiot, you can groan them instead of flipping out and posting a distracting message in their thread.
These options will give users who are now familiar with your name, a chance to see if your posts are generally enjoyed by the community.
abusers of these options can be banned from the thanks/groan system and have all their thanks/groan wiped from the system.
I truly hope these new additions to the forum bring about more thoughtful posts and puts light on the posters who's word is truly worth paying attention to.

davi
October 25th, 2007, 04:19 AM
well, if you see someone with a ton of thanks and hardly any posts gives you a critic, and someone with alot of posts and no critics.... who do you think is putting a little more time into their care? Of course it depends on the context of the critics, but you can get a general feel for the person whom is criticing you.
if someone is a spamming asshole and gets a ton of groans.. its alot easier for me to keep an eye on him.

I find the thanks useful in knowing that what you said to someone or vice versa is appreciated and it raises your self-confidence and capacity to help others. The groan thing is a bit much, but that'll be evaluated I'm sure.

I always find it amusing to see who comes in right away with concerns. Pessimists...all of ya!
:)
The lounge has so much crap that it was best to leave the groans out. the rest of the forums will see it as a useful too eventually. If I catch someone abusing it i will just ban them. Simple as that.
But the thanks...I have no idea how any of you could see that as useless or unnecessary. It is the one thing that we can always show around here when people do good things...appreciation.
It is no different than the stars system...easily abused...but rarely. Except this time I can track it easily.

This makes sense, well, a lot more now that I read that.
I have a question, though. Say someone joins up, just to spam or be an ass and give out tons of groans, when he is banned will those groans be removed from the person he gave them to? If not other people may see it and think he is a bad member or spamming when really he was just given it for no reason.
Otherwise, keep up the hard work, I can't wait to see the newly designed site, dudes!

What if I start thanking everyone on the boards... like... some kind of non-violent resistance against such useless glorification tools? Do you realize how much of this site's space is taking by features like that? It just keeps growing. The thumbnails on top (which seem to be used by some, actually, unfortunately), star-system that hasn't been any useful because everyone keeps clicking the high-star'd sketchbooks and ignores the non-rated. Now groans and thanks. Everyone I'm thankful to will notice it by a message. Everyone I think of as an idiot will notice, too.
Really, guys. The forum keeps getting fatter and fatter, while people just enjoy slim more. Correct me if I'm wrong (or "groan" if you want.)

Doing my best not to let the giddiness of coming out on top of a popularity contest for the first time in my life taint my opinion. . . I think the new tools are working largely as intended, with an expected amount of fluffy button-pressing to playfully test the system out. I’m loving that I can revisit old respectable posts and leave a marker on them so that they might continue to be read.
I think it is telling that there hasn’t been a rash of groans yet. Has anybody groaned at all?

I think it is telling that there hasn’t been a rash of groans yet. Has anybody groaned at all?
I haven't, but have been tempted.
On the whole, I really like the idea of the Thanks and Groans.
For myself, I'm less likely to post a glib reply - not because I'm afraid of getting "groaned" at, but because I'm wanting to make sure that it's a useful post. I've never really been one for the Ass Pats, but I've done my share of "Well Dones" when I can't figure out a crit. However, now I'm thinking of the posts in terms of usefulness, which I'm sure this one doesn't fall into the category of. But I think you get my meaning.
I hope.
Anyway, I do think the new system is a good idea :yayca:

What happens to the removed thanks. I thanked people in my sb because they commented on my stuff. I was thinking it was a kind of new way to mass thank people instead of responding to everyone who posts in you sb. I feel dumb trying to find ten different ways to say thanks all the time. and then I go and post in their sb to give them respect anyway. so after realizing that the thanks would be more greatly appreciated if used sparingly I removed the thanks. so I guess those are my thoughts about that. any Ideas?

The first one to be groaned at is Ned. Yesterday I did a search for all the groaned posts and only that one showed up. So I guess the one at the top is the newest groan, and the one at the bottom the first.

One of the photographers groaned anyone who disagreed with them, and other than that it has been mostly civil. Not bad for day one. so if someone gets like a million groans, what happens? do you cut their bandwidth? ban them or something?
i like giving vicious critiques, but i dont want to be groaned when i give a real (sometimes harsh) critique that someone just "didn't want to hear"... you know the type:

It is no different than the stars system...easily abused...but rarely. Except this time I can track it easily.
Jason
I don't understand the stars system. It intimidates me a bit. If somebody has 5 stars, do I know enough to crit them? I usually, with the exceptions of Mindcandyman and Mentler, avoid the 5 starrers. I feel that I can give more worthwhile crits in the posts that have no stars.
When I do look at the 5 star posts, they don't always seem to be the same standard/quality, but that's probably just me.....

can we find a way to have the thanked and groaned indicator lists foldable so that the accumulations dont mess with the reading flow of the posts?
(did that make any sense at all?)
basically, a pile of names thanking any one post will make it a pain in the ass to follow a conversation. (it already gets in the way) ...can they be optional to view? that way people who care can participate and the rest of us can go back to talking about art.....

IMHO Thanks&Groans can be a nice idea, but like all "tools", it depends on how be used. I hope to be wrong, but I think that this become another way to exchange favour and increase reputation. Looking at this thread, there's still a lot of pleasant thanks, and we are in Lounge area, we are not talking about art. Popular guys will have easily hundreds thanks.
Anyway, it's regular and it's not a too bad thing.
About groans: I thought that groans was just for really useless posts. I have seen a groan gived to the first post to a thread author: it's a correct use?
About the Stars: like I say on another post, I think that the actual system doesn't work well.
Actually a post whit one star is more worse than a post whit no stars, but users do not use stars in this way.
I think that a star system whitout negative feeds can work really better: it's more easy to see that a thread whit no stars have not high level works (*cough* or not pretty popular author *cough*). It's Darwinian.
Anyway this is just my two cents...

Yet another idea for the heap-of-stuff-that-would-be-nice-given-endless-resources: perhaps some sort of confirmation could be added to thanks and groans, to prevent accidents? I.E., you press the button, and get a pop-up that says “Are you sure you want to groan so-and-so?”
I’m looking forward to seeing what else you guys have been up to, Jason. :)

nah, i dont see it that way at all. i've seen some really good threads with no stars that nobody had voted on.
besides the whole thing is flawed anyway, i used to have 5 stars on my sketch book, now for some reason its only 4 and the other day i saw a dude with 5 stars that wasn't as good as me... i dont care. its not that big of a deal. i just ignore them now.

Complete2 I'm not talking about "justice" but just about, IMHO, simple visual organization.
I just think that rating would works better if the bad rate have different icons, like "minus" sign or "thumb down" or something like this, in example:
:star::star: Excellent
:star: Good
:down: Bad
:down::down: Terrible
Average is a regular state when no one rate your thread.
Personally, I not agree whit negative rating whitout arguments, so, something like that:
:star::star::star::star: Excellent
:star::star::star: Good
:star::star: Nice
:star: Ok
would be the best.
I really don't like flooding a post whit large amount of "wow", "cool", "nice!", "kapooooow!" (at me, it's all useless posts, but I can't groan all everyday ;-]) so, star rating it's important for me.
About groans: if someone groan you because don't like your critique, just ignore it, people knows that you are ok http://www.ivanovich.it/avatars/emoticons/Smile2.gif

Little OT but, since we are talking about update suggestion...
At side of every thread there is a little icon to "Go to first new post". It would be useful if there were an icon to "Go to first new post by author", if the icon seem "off" there are not new posts by author.
I hope to speak well.

That reminds me of an idea I had for the sketchbooksection.
How about a sketchbook only gets pushed to the top when the original author replies?
That way, all the "ooh!" "awesome!" "incredible!!!" posts won't affect the order, only the amount of actual sketchbook updates would.

I was a bit shocked to see I'd already been Groaned at and when I looked it was for unabashedly complimenting a Black Frog POST ! Black Frog! in a thread over 2 yrs old?! In a thread where everyone is obviously complimenting him amazed and thanking him for posting I guess my two year old post was too much?!
Anyhow many thanks for Jason Manley and all those involved in the renovations and upgrades trying to make a better community.

Hey, I removed that groan from you. I think it was most likely an accident, you're right, the groan didn't make any sense for being there. Being that your post was the very last one on the page, the person probably went to hit the "next page" button, and accidently hit "groan" instead. It has happened before, and the location of the groan button is a bit awkward for that reason.
I second the suggestion that was made to make a 'confirmation' check on the groan button, like "Are you sure you want to groan this person?" before activating.

I'd actually like to see the SB thing go one step further - how awesome would it be if you could filter the thread so that you only see the posts from the original poster, and only get notified if the original poster updates? At least in some of the SBs I follow, they tend to end up with full pages of "awesome!!!11!" responses, and it would be a lot more interesting to look at if you could see just the updates.
Not sure if it's possible with the forum's programming, but it'd be nice.

Weeelllll, I take part in another forum that isn't at all art related, but fitness/training/nutrition related. There are two subforums for training journals there. One is an "open" journal section where others can comment; the other is "private" where it's only the journal's author who can update.

Yeah, I agree. I've already seen it used for that exact purpose, I think it might make it too easy for people to take a cheap shot at someone.
I think the 'thanks' button is pretty useful through. Sometimes there's no need to respond with an obligatory 'thank you' post to someone's reply so you can just use the 'thanks' button and keep the topic clean.
