View Full Version : How could you consume completely a pencil in one day?!

This was an exercise, or maybe a lifestyle, that I heard once in art school. The teacher (I don't know who is him) suggested to consume completely a pencil every day... I'm particularly very slow when I draw, and now for me it is impossible, unless I will spent all day shading. Of course is very easy to consume a pencil if you have an automatic pencil sharpener at home >:D
Well, somebody knows the way or ways to do this obsessive exercise without becoming crazy? ...somebody have tried to do anything like this?

All you gotta do is shade dark and heavy. It'll melt away.
Or just draw line art all day...

Don't draw just to achieve a silly goal like that.
Draw with purpose. Quality over quantity.

aesir, doing that seems radical but compatible with social life.:vodkamachine:
well, It seems a silly torture, although, in my opinion in the case you never reach to finish the pencil, the skills you can get trying it for a while can grow a lot.
I want to believe that the pencil is wasted for purpose, not only for the goal.

It sounds like one of those things that you do to counteratc something that you don't know that you are doing.
He could have been all sorts of things. Maybe he wanted to encourage you to use your pencil in as many ways as possible.
Tell ya what, I'm gonna try this myself and see how it goes.

9B pencil + press down hard + buy 5 cm pencils + electric eraser which you use every time you get a dull end.

Maybe render some realistic space art or night cityscape :).

Ok...get a sheet of paper. Starting at one corner, using the flat of your pencil, darken the area...until you have darkened the entire page. Do it again, making sure every bit of white is covered by graphite. Repeat with several sheets of paper, until pencil is used up.
Then you've got a stack of dark paper to do some "negative art"...make pictures by erasing away what you don't want.
Of course, I'm being silly....

Small bites. It'll constipate you something awful, though.

I do believe the question was on the thread title SpaceChimp. Pay attention.
drop the pencil and just sit down before you hurt yourself.
oh and devouring a pencil does not make you any better at drawing.
its what you do with it that matters...or so I hear...er...
EDIT: You know now that I think about it, I got a crap load of 1 1/2 inch pencils, anyone know where I an get a decent pencil holder/extender thingy?

Actually man, I misread what you wrote. I thought you were being funny by telling him to sit down and draw UNTil you hurt yourself. I have no clue why... I wasnt giving you a hard time. And discouraging me to draw is not cool...not cool at all. So condescending.:}

J L Alfaro I share your problem. Waay too many stub ends of pencils, Drawings I can throw away, but pencils hold memories....
Only pencil I've ever consumed in a day has been a mechanical pencil. Darn leads keep snapping! (I know I should keep 'em shorter, but it gives me an excuse to swear!)

Ok spacechimp, thanks for the link man, I spent a few minutes at jerrys yesterday, trying to find one of those but got tired of clicking on thumbnails..eh
I'll take back the "putting your pencil down" part...but not the "pay attention" part, hehe :P
alesoun- yeah man, you know the problem with me is that when I reach that pencil height, I put it away with the optimism of one day getting to the end of it.
Slash- try drawing with it man, that may help.
Vhan Juju- you dont have to try man, just draw.
