im sure most of you know about all the fires in southern california now. last i heard there were 22, with a few starting to merge and get super large.

just wanted to say i hope those in the areas on fire got out safely.

i know a bunch of my friends from Watts had to be evacuated (including me and my roomies) and thankfully no one in the witch fire (the one that is tearing a few miles away form my place) has been seriously hurt.

I used to live in Ventura, long and away ago. I remember seeing the fires coming over the Thousand Oak hills towards Camarillo from the Freeway. It is the most surreal experience.

I've still got friends and family down that way today.

I've been checking the photos on MSNBC.com. Eerie stuff. I don't ever remember it being this bad.

All the best to those affected.

Hope the animals at the San Diego Zoo continue to stay safe too, "Certain critically endangered animals, such as the California condors, were evacuated to a safe zone in the middle of the night".... glad the condors were safely evacuated before their enclosure went up in flames.... :S

Stay safe people.

Dear Heavens! I knew nothing about this until I saw this thread. Haven't seen a newspaper or listened to radio or tv all day. Words fail me at the extent of the fires.

heres an updated google map showing the fires and giving stats on how many acres burned, whats contained, and how many houses destroyed or damaged

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&om=1&msa=0&msid=117631292961056724014.00043d0e9ca465cefeeed&ll=35.960223

You can switch into the hybrid view and see all the houses next to some of these fires.

I have lots of Family in California, but they all seem to be ok. Geez! I can't believe it is getting that crazy. The Santa Ana winds are vicious.
I hope people continue to be safe, and good luck to all the firefighters.

I'm in Culver City and you can literally feel the heat from the flames, like when you open the oven to check on the food. The sun is setting a bright magenta because of all the sulfur in the air. It's really freaky.

my prayers with all those people whom are unfortunately caught in the fires.

I wish there was more I could do...:(

They showed on LA news today, a San Diego reporter....he was broadcasting live, in front of his completely destroyed and still burning home of 25 years.

Jeez, I can't believe how many people have been evacuted, like an estimated 1 million or so?? That's insane.

If you haven't seen this footage (http://archive.hpwren.ucsd.edu/Fires/20071021-20071028_LP/) from some of the San Diego fires, it's amazing.

Holy sh*t, the view from the south is terrifying. I'm so relieved that they've got everything contained. I'm not sure of the cause of the San Diego fires (arson I think?) but they found the child who accidentally started the ones in Malibu. It'll be interesting to see how that unfolds.

My best friends (you met one of them, Mark) say that the SD fires were mainly from mishaps (trees into wires due to high winds and one transformer actually exploded, etc.).

Gosh, I hope that transformer wasn't Optimus Prime...

damn my dad sure picked a good time to take a mini vacation.

He's not the only one, I just got back from there :$ (oxnard, malibu, santa monica)

I didn't see any fires luckily as none came very close to where i was (although there were some black hills driving back to the airport) but in oxnard for a few hours the sky was yellow/orange and there was ash falling silent hill style, scary stuff. There weren't actually any fires there but all the smoke from the ones nearby were blown over which caused that.
