Hello all....I'm new to this place and I've been quite impressed with the work around here. This is my first post in this forum. I'll be throwing stuff up in other places like the concepts in 3d threads and daily sketchbook in the coming days. Below are a few images for my own personal interest. For something totally different, I have a few things up in the speed painting thread that don't involve shrapnel inbound.

hey, you have some exceptional rendering abilities.

i think you should spend more time on your structor drawings though, and if your working from photos, dont rely on the photos for everything.

I may be talking outa my ass :trouble: , but its just something that seemed to stand out.

Nice picture!!!
BUT!...am gunna be the mean bitch and point sumthin obvious but unimportant out...as anyone knows, the battle of stalingard was fought in Russia, a country by all means cold...and colder on the season in which the battle was fought...which brings me to think, why da' heck is it sunny? where's the snow? cold lookin landscape?

Other than that..GREAT WORK!!! :D

Thanks for the responses so far...

Dakardaur....Your right about Germany being defeated in the winter at Stalingrad.....But I believe their sixth army had reached the outskirts of the city by late Aug 42. By the time they took the city and then themselves were besieged and surrendered it was Feb 43.. But a frozen tundra or snowy city would not be a bad image....I'll think about it.

Landmate....You addressed the biggest issue I have with my work...relying too much on ref. Lately I've been trying to work more from my imagination in speed painting sessions and hopefully I can learn to improvise more in future work.

Ant4d.....Yea, Like I said above...I'm trying to break out of that. I see it useful for ch. studies to be historically accurate but for painting there is tremendous value in improvisation.

Whoa, very badass fish. I my self like drawing WW2 theams. I really love the sdkfz, great detail.:chug: oh one thing im not familiar seeing on an sdkfz is the metal rigging. Is it an attachment for camoulflage netting?

Montross, that's the antenna structure indicating a command vehicle. Nice stuff, Scumble Fish- cool to see that Pzkw in color!

I really like the painted german panzer unit on top, great colors and loose rendering style.

do you work straight from photos or do you take the reference and build a scene from them?

Ok first thing, most of Russia is cold in the winter and hot in the summer, not cold all the time. (Im from there) Although, it having been a cold season in which the battle was faught, I would like to have seen some traces of snow, at least.

The rendering is very good, except on some of the pictures where I cant tell where the light is coming from. And on the last pic, the guy on the left has something seriously wrong with his left hand, its like missing or it blends into his belt or something. Although that did not stop me from enjoying these truly great pics. Thanx for posting them. :chug:

gah! i sorta overlooked this one, but these are some kickass pics :) I especially like the 1st and 4th. ALthough what type of tank is featured in the 3rd/4th? ie.) (the structure on top) neway its very snazzy and realistic -

Montross.......thanks for the comment. It's a very drawable vehicle. As chukw explained, this SdKfz 232 fu (of which there were many variants) was designed to function as a radio equipped armored command vehicle for a higher formation unit officer or his staff. As such it was outfitted with a curved 'bedstead' aerial frame (antenna) which allowed wireless communication from the front. Quite a setup considering its mounted in such a way as to still allow the turret proper rotation for firing. Its 8 wheeled chassie was extremely advanced for its time.

chukw......Thanks for pointing out the Sdkfz's aerial. I'm glad you like the images.

bwkeough.......I've used both methods to create scenes but I am currently pushing myself to adopt the latter approach -improvising more from selected reference in hopes of showing something possibly not seen before.

Loga4..........Thanks, I hope to be putting more things up along these lines soon.

meDrawUC.......I think that battle is so associated with a winter siege that the top image under the title is a little surprising. The above scene depicts the advance of the German panzer units through the Russian Steppes (eastern front) leading up to Stalingrad. I kinda explain this above to Dakardaur. I agree with you....the figures hand you mention does read unclear. He's wearing heavy gloves that tend to hide the hands form. I should have defined the fingers more! I appreciate the comments!

remedial......the drawing is of a armored command vehicle with an elaborate radio aerial as noted above. Thanks for the look.
