Hi I have since half a year back fallen in love with art for real, I have always loved to draw but recently I got a new ignition. So I figured why not start a sketchbook for fun. Please be hard on the critic I want to become better.
I plan to update often with new sketches.

Hey man your drawings aint that bad. And your love for art will certanly help in your progress. Experiment more with different poses and do some anatomy studies to get them right. after that try out with shading more.

Is good that you have initiative , but you need to concentrate when you are drawing , and start with simple shapes , boxes , cones spheres etc , then you could start with some anatomy , and i advice to study and draw , bones first , then the muscles , understand how the body stands , if you cant get the skeleton to stand , then the muscles will drop on ... I'm not saying that the muscles are easy , they are three times more harder then bones , you need to know the volume of the muscle, the mechanism , and the actions ... in a year or so you will be able to draw a normal body if you keep drawing everyday 1h or more.

I draw much more than I actually put up here. Only put up the things I think is worth getting opinions on.. Here are some more posing sketches and a concept that im planing on making in 3d. Only sideview for now. Not so detailed only gonna be used for imageplane.

Ive learnt that I must think more while im drawing, now im just drawing without thinking and then my anatomy and everything get messed up.. And thats not good is it? :D

Welll Ive got april fooled 2 times today.. Better go to bed before someone tries to go for a hatrick! gnight!

P.S
Thanks alot for the few comments Ive got! I really appreciated people taking time to help me get better.
Really appreciated!

nice stuff, good drive as well.
My biggest critique would be that you should stop drawing your bodies with contours only. You need to start measuring and make everything align right. Learn the anatomy by finding some Loomis or Hogarth books.

other than that, just keep on working! Feed that paper!

Is this good training you think?

October 26th, 2008, 12:48 PM
Nice start for your SB - lookin good so far... draw from life and record exactly what you see (not what you think you see), draw tonally instead of with lines... it will help you start to understand how light and shadow work... and finally - don't outline your teeth... unless you want that creepy kinda look:)

Keep it up! You're doing well

Nellin
October 26th, 2008, 01:00 PM
sinneart - Thanks haha you are right, those teeth looks like they belong to a old lady in Russia fed on rocks, haha! Yes I like what you said about drawing what you see and dont what you think that you see, because I felt that feeling a thousand times.
Once again thanks!

Work in progress

My idea in this concept is a guardian in the forest who protects the nature and all living things in it.. you dont want to mess with him.. He wears flowers as armor. They protect him and he protect them.

Nicky S
July 11th, 2009, 05:09 AM
Good work so far,

Keep doing those color studies, they look smudged 'cause the values and contrast aren't extreme enough, as soon as I paint with pressure sensitivity activated, I suffer from the same problem, but it takes a bit more work to overcome this.

Try to do some life drawings, or some posemaniacs it will help you get more feeling for natural poses, cause right now all your imaginairy poses seem a bit stiff, it helps to let the character put his weight mostly on one leg, this way, the pelvis wil rotate a bit, and the back will curve aswell, so you'll get a more dynamic pose.

Keep it up, just draw, and at the end of the day, show us what you got, and we will try to help. ^^

Good work, just keep m coming, you'll learn more by doing them. :)
Just watch out for your lines, try to look good at your ref, and then try to use a clean line to portray what you're seeing, it' gonna be difficult at first, but keep trying.

Any updates on your character?

Keep it up!

Nicky S
August 24th, 2009, 05:29 AM
Nice work,

Try looking up a bit of reference material when you're painting, it can help when trying to visualise things, for example, if thats a river, it doesn't move that way through the landscape, it follows the shape of hills, mountains and such, if it's a manmade canal it's possible to go straight like that, as with the mountains the same, they tend to look not natural in relation to the rest of the landscape. But it's better then the first times I tried to do a landscape piece. :) A bit of refferencing will help you out! ^^

The figure af the man looks good, composition is great aswell it leads your eye from the man to the army crossing the bridge. ^^

Keep it up!

Little update, C/C are welcomed!

Nicky S
August 27th, 2009, 12:09 PM
Hey,

It's looking good, a thing that can help you is deciding from which direction one or multiple light sources are coming from, this way you can make use of light and shadow to make the form and shape of your character really pop. Don't be afraid to push those values further. :)

And I like the lion head on the character's shoulder. ^^

Keep it up!

August 30th, 2009, 10:14 AM
Hi there, thanks for the comment in my SB :) I think you're on the right track; just keep going with the anatomy studies and painting from refs.

For some specific critique, I feel like the problem in your Hayley portrait is the consistency in your colors. The midtones on the face have a good sense of tone and color, but the darker values seem to be mixed from black, especially in the neck. Also, for the eyes, be careful not to make the lines too sharp. Soften them a bit and add some brown to help them mesh with the rest of the face. If you outline the eyes with a semi-black line, they will feel cut-and-pasted on.

Good luck and keep posting! ;)

Nellin
August 30th, 2009, 07:43 PM
dierat - Thanks, your absolutely right, my biggest problem in portrait is the colors and very often the shadow part. I have big problem finding the right value in dark and make the transition nicely together with another bright colour like the skin for an example.. Thanks for the tips on the eyes aswell, spot on ;) Please come again ^^

Nicky S
August 31st, 2009, 10:25 AM
Hey, nice work on the matte painting, it looks pretty nice,

as for the portrait, just do some more portraits, practising will help you a lot, but stay away from mixing black into your colors as Dierat allready pointed out. It can be a color of doooooom.^^
A good thing to practice painting colors, is painting a still life of an apple, or something with a simple shape, so that you can focus on getting it's colors right.

Keep it up!

Nicky S

Nice start with your desktop painting, I'm looking forward to see it more finished, if you don't have a lot of time to work on it, try to focus on a small part of the still life, like the glass for example, try to learn from looking how it interacts with the evironment, how lights reflects,...

Keep it up!

Nicky S
September 5th, 2009, 06:58 AM
Good job on the studies, it's a good start, it will only improve by doing them very now and then.
Take your time to get the colors right, stay aware of any perspective issues that might reveal themselves. And also if you paint something, paint the cast shadow aswel, then it doesn't look like it's floating in the air.

Keep it up!

Nellin
September 9th, 2009, 07:21 PM
Man im having such problems laying in the legs..always had.. anyone got any tips or excersice? Ive been trying im not kidding for 2 hours... Im so frustrated right now!!! >:{ Everything else just get sketched in so quickly and I feel good about all other stuff but the legs mess me up...I need to master drawing legs..I will not rest until Ive learned..

Nicky S
September 11th, 2009, 07:45 AM
Looking good so far, but watch out for the values as you continue.
For help with legs, look for a book that deals with it, or even better take some reference pictures of your own legs, and use those, start first with simple/cartoony legs, and learn the basic shapes, ways of movenment,... And then gradually build it up 'till you can draw more realistic legs from your minds eye.
But it takes time, so be patient, practice and enjoy the learning proces. :)

Keep it up!

Allright! Keep em coming! :)

When you're considering your values, try to pick more extreme values, 'cause most people tend to pick colors or values that aren't contrasting enough. I have the same problem, I need to take a break, come back to a painting or drawing, only to realize I need to push the values some more. :)

A character update.. im studying Art history on the side, and are also studying for my driving license, so there is small time for drawing, but there is always time ;D The Art History im studying is all about sculptures architecture and paintings all the way back from ancient egypt til todays art, so its really broad but very intresting and hopefully I will pick up some inspiration and ideas along the way from great artist from the earlier days.

Im quite happy with this because I didnt use any reference for the drapery and it ended up looking quite realistic.

Shaman with pigmask, its not totaly finished tho. Im trying to do one every day. Im trying to learn to make folds and to render good with the values between white and black. Also trying to come up with some cool ideas, and let the fantasy flow.

dierat
October 26th, 2009, 10:46 AM
Try to get in the habit of drawing the feet in for your figures. I feel like a lot of your characters end somewhere mid-leg, which means that you're developing your ability to draw other areas of the body but leaving the feet behind. Maybe do some studies of feet to help you feel more confident drawing them in. Also, your poses will be better if your figures are grounded better, so that's just another reason to improve your feet/legs.

Nellin
October 26th, 2009, 04:33 PM
-dierat Yea thanks I know thats important..sometimes I feel that I dont want to ruin the character by adding ugly feets. And that is totaly wrong way to go, like a bad circle. I will take your words and really take them in to my heart! :D thanks

A update on a character I did earlier, and believe it or not... This one got feets! yay :P

Hey Nellin!

I agree with what Dierat said about the feet - try doing more of those (god knows that feet are something I suck at myself, so I understand you completely). What I've noticed about your sketches is that it seems like you're rushing it a bit sometimes. You can tell which sketches you spent more time on because they look better so my advice would be - take your time. The more you practice the faster you'll draw but right now it's more important to get the figure right than to do it quickly :)

Oh, and btw, I love the apple :D

Nellin
December 28th, 2009, 11:07 AM

Hi. You have cool concepts and ideas. Especially the shaman-pig is cool idea and the clothing looks good. Try to increase some contrast in your values. For example in your assassin the armours look a bit flat. But great poses :)

The character designs are getting better & better dude :D really diggin the last one on page 3, and the latest one's cool as well, his stance is a little odd though. it would be nice to see him rendered & in an environment :) Also studies are a huge help f you wanna get the human figure right :)

btw how come i don't see any female character :P

Nellin
February 11th, 2010, 06:35 AM
Myllys- Thanks, I really try to think about contrast and i try to make it better, and more 3d feeling in some elements.

Miycko- Thanks for all feedback!!, I've recently thought about adding backgrounds to my drawings, so that is maybe something I will start. The girls are coming calm down ^^ im working on one right now hehe :P, also im studying some anatomy from books but maybe its good to start doing studies again.

Great job with the bird study. Feathers on the small one are especially well rendered. It seems you have a bird phase going on. Even the dude on post 91 reminds me a bird. His pose looks like he's ready to fly off and the hair on his head.

Thanks for dropping by my SB!

From what I see here, I can tell that you have an imagination that is just dying to be set free. Your problem, to me, seems to be your focus (or lack there of). Right now you seem to scattered, like you are trying to learn too many things all at once. I'd suggest you go back to the basics and focus on getting good at drawing (with just pencil and paper) doing linework, buildings shapes and forms, proportions, and just simple composition. More importantly, find yourself a focal point to work around. For me, it was the human figure. For you it might be something else.

Also, how often do you practice everyday? Do you practice everyday? If you are serious about your art work then it needs to be your top priority in life. Use your free time to practice, practice, practice! You seem to like monsters/creatures a lot. Find some of your favourite monster/creature artists and copy their work. Yes! Copy their work! Copying is terrific practice for any beginner artist. I do not do it enough myself.

How often do you draw from life? Draw from life all the time, be it 5 mins sketches or 12 hour paintings. Always visually extract from life as much as possible; nature, after all, is still the perfect designer. Take from the best!

Anyways man, I hope this feedback helps you. Keep bringing the weirdness, I like where you are trying to push yourself but I can tell that you don't practice as much as you could. Don't worry, I do the same. That is why we must keep ourselves motivated!

Take care

hey dude :D great updates in here, i really dig the jester, he looks like a really creepy character which is awesome, the only issue i have is that his knees are not very well defined. The one in post No 102 is a great, well armored and strong character - i like :) That portrait is my fave from your updates, the skin tone & lighting is fantastic, i think her hand's a little too big though otherwise great work :teeth: something seems a little off with the hands in the marine designs. maybe you could have some lines defining the devisions in the armor/gloves, that should help :) nice skintone studies, try to use less white for your highlights, it gives a sort of washed out feel to the skin. instead try to use a brighter version of the colour mixed with the color of the light source or the background colour. thanks for the comments in my SB man :teeth:

Hi Nellin, what's up?

Keep them portraits coming. Already there's improvement. Measure the key positions carefully. The position of eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, size of the eyes etc. Look carefully the shapes of the shadows, half tones and lights and try to reproduce them. And just keep them coming. You promised 30 :)

Thought of a future caveworker who has a suit that is working as a lightsource. Its also protective and it lets them work deep down in caves where the darkness is so thick that a simple flashlight wouldnt penetrate 1meter into the darkness. These guys doesnt see the sun so often, sometimes not for months.

Yes I was trying to make a modern but still exotic and beautiful female warrior. Powerfull but still elegant.
