Any women in this buisness?

hi all, i ve been browsing this forum and many other places and i notice i rarely ever see women into concept art/game art and such. also i havnet heard of a famous concept artist that is a woman. any thoughts?

I think that's an excellent question, Lady Lioness, but one with few easy answers.

For starters, one might argue the most famous female concept artist is Terryl Whitlatch...and, crimminy, is she ever talented. And to say she has a sweet gig and high profile is a massive understatement.

There are also a few very active posters here at CA who are female, but yes, they seem like a minority.

Everything else I could say is based on heresay and theory, though: the male-dominated technology and game industry, the infamously misogynistic film industry...but it's all just theory, and everyone's opinion will be different. On the other hand, in children's book illustration, one might find the opposite demographics!

Yeah.. about that.. I'm an animation student, but there aren't a lot of girl animators either. :T I might switch over to the game industry, I haven't made up my mind just yet. It would be nice to see some big female names though!

yes, there are! the few the proud.

even more reason to become one.

i'm an environment modeller for valve software, and an animation student. the other girls at work are a receptionist, a programmer, and a texture artist on another project, kristen perry [www.merekatcreations.com]. we're buds :) my mom once told me that girls can bring something else to the work they do, something that guys don't have. and i've figured that out - it's like coming from a different culture, you have different views on artwork, on the visions of the projecy you're working on. that's been more and more true.

and about the game industry.. gamers tend to be guys. no doubt. but it's about preference y'know. seems that kind of thing is more engrained in boys than in girls. as for me, i play some games but like making them better. i like the art side of it, making things look beautiful, rather than designing puzzles and deciding which monster will be killed how and when. just doesn't appeal to me as much. but when it comes down to it, it's what you're into.

so again, it's no reason not to be a girl, not to work on films.. go for it, and do what you really love.

I know it's not exactly concept art, but has anybody ever seen Jo Chen's work. She was doing Dark Minds for Dream Wave Productions. And she's damn good too. An extremely talented digital painter. Sammy, beware, she draws pretty boys. hahaha
I'm not sure what she does now (Dark Minds?) but she may have some concepting under her belt...or whatever she may wear around her waist.

in animation school girls were a majority. At least when class started......... At work we are 4 women on a grand total of .. about 40 ppl. We all have different backgrounds.
