oh thx a lot... these were really my first time trying the transition from graphite to charcoal pencils. i have really only used graphite but my teacher wanted me to give them a shot so i could push my darks further.

Sounds like your teacher doesn't know the value range that can be reached with
graphite.
The drawings posted are a very nice start I must say. The thing is that both subjects are pretty complicated and difficult to be able to study light, values edges etc...
I would suggest drawing less complicated objects first ( preferably organic ) to learn the principles of more easily.

nice studies, they look really well observed, be careful of your cast shadows. I would study them more so that you can ground your images a little bit better. I think that Tristan has a little diagram he drew up and posted with the properties of light, if you can find it, i think it would be helpful, understanding what we are seeing is really key.
