i agree! great work. i allways enjoy looking at it. big respect for your patience, doing all those muscle-studies. i would go insane, working on such difficult details. and of course, the way you do hatching lines! man, i just can't stop wondering how smooth (can i say that? english is not my first language...) you hatch. you know my problems with hatching...

btw.: i love those cows. amazing. just imagine all the happy kids playing with them... :fruit:

hey there robolus, nice studies! ive been doing some sketches of muscles but just under the skin, i havent gotten around to looking at photos of how the actually muscle would look like on a person. also is those sketches of cows for that company that makes a candy called cow tails or something? its caramel and has white dot in the center?

its always good to see an artist who knows what hes doing, great to have you in here...
The thing that impresses me most about your work is the solidness to the forms..your shadings flow around shapes very much like Hogarth...
keep posting m8.

metalwinds: Thank´s a lot man. I didn´t like Hogarth very much either. But Marko Djurdjevic gave me the advice to look again in the books, and he´s right, Burne was a good teacher.

Suder: Thanks my friend! Uh, I have the same problems like you with "Inglisch".

metal + Rusty: Many thanks for yor kind words! :)

lung_bug + Lady Lioness: These concepts are for "Milka", a german candy company.

Hio Robolus,

fine stuff you´re presenting here. I´m not much of a fan of Hogarth - even if I have some of his books - but you´ve done some really good renderings. I especially like the second and the third portrait. They are showing a confident linework I envy you for. Have they been done before the model? They look like the result of a portrait study session.

Nice to have you around!

hi robolus!
it's great to see some of the portraits. i like them (and i'm proud to be the owner of one!:D) i was very impressed on how fast you do those portraits, capturing the main characteristics of the peroson in front of you. big respect, once again!

and, oh man, i love the boy with the head in his hands, grinning out of his costume. makes me smile!

Hi Robolus,

I really like the MAD Cover - you´ve got a faible for this cartoony stuff, haven´t you?

I lately realized the minotaur with the miniature. I see you know Stefan Niehues. He´s working for Assassin, isn´t he? Then maybe you know Dirk Stiller, too ... the world seems to be small, I´m just getting in contact with my old "networks" in the roleplaying and miniature scene and there doesn´t seem to have changed a lot in the last ten years - you always meet the old people ;).

Suder: Much worse than Marko? Hard to believe, I wanna seethat! :chug: Daily? Yeah, you are right! But I wasn´t lazy, have to work a lot, drawing thinks like this:

http://www.freire-design.de/rs027.jpg

Here are the STEPS (http://www.freire-design.de/steptostep.jpg) drawing one of those figurines. I rarely need a rubber. I use layout paper that I put above the drawings betweenn every step. I need a lot of paper, and sometimes I can´t see my desk anymore :D, but it´s my way to draw fast and efficient.

Ahh, and here are some of my finished BABYS (http://www.freire-design.de/armada.jpg) !

Fipse
September 20th, 2003, 02:56 AM
Ah the good ole layer by layer on layer-technique ... makes me wanna get back to times when Layouting was drawing. I wonder how many tons of paper I wasted in the first 5 years of professional life ;).

What paper do you use? I have to buy new one and can´t get my Karacho-paper anymore. The Schleicher-Schütt marker paper is crap and bigraph is difficult to get ... I want to get back to this techniques to straighten up my linework.

Fipse

Suder
September 20th, 2003, 05:37 AM
well, than show us this stuff. you know, that i like it. it's children's paradise...

it is very impressive, to see how you work with that layout paper. i saw it life once or twice, and it made me wonder how fast you are, using this technique. and, just like fipse, i was looking for good layout-paper here in cologne but i didn't found any. i wanted to give it a try, even if it would be frustrating for me...

p.s.: what about a "wasted-looking-contest"? you, marco and me and barrels of beer? :chug:

A Oil Portrait Study in B/W after Ref.
I have posted this beforen in CA, but I think it fits now in my Sketchbook between the other portraits. I´ve done the study after I have read THIS BOOK. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0891349022/qid=1065432636/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-4604801-9238527?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)
I was very happy with the result because it was my third portrait I did in oil ever. Two nights, a lot of coffee, in about 6 hours.

Hi Robolus,

I really like the pendrawing in your last post of Mastercopies - seems I really have to do some, too as you proposed (You know my prob with time yaddayadda ;))

Your Funnies are interesting for me because I always try to find hints in drawingstyles about the region the drawer is coming from. These pics really look "german" to me, maybe with french influences. I suppose you´re a fan of Asterix?

Nice work as usual and I´m still feeling sorry that we couldn´t meet in Essen.

Wow... if one ever wanted to feel inferior...

Your work is amazing. I have one of the hogarth books and you have mastered the anatomy of those flawlessly. I think that he kind of exagurates (sp) some things in anatomy, but that may be just me.

Anyhow, you are just all around talented. You've got the cartoony stuff, and the realism, and everything. The line work and the shadows are incredible.

It's cool to be able to talk to professionals on this board, and I like that you post your processes. It helps to see how another artist starts their stuff and progresses.

hey rob good stuff!

maybe u should do more studies of whole figures, to get a strong feel for how it all works together.
check bammes to see how which leg position affects what the hip does, and how the position of the hip kinda dictates what the upper body does to stay balanced. stuff like this.

you always can go back and dissect certain parts of the body, but i think that a strong understanding of the human body as a whole is more important, than perfect knowlegde of isolated parts.

i´m liking the rendering of that pastel image!

keep it up!

Great sketchbook Robolus! Thats a nice pastel drawing. Especially being a first! Heres a little crit on it... I think that having the mountain range's silhouette a little less repetitive would really make the drawing that much better.
Its great that you draw with many different techniques, subject matters, and styles. Nice stuff!

I don't know, how you get your ideas ^^ You need to explain this to me next time we meet :D
There are so many, absolutely different Characters. Simply Amazing. I only can see your source of inspiration at the one guy, with glasses on the first page.... he looks like Sylvester Stalone and the female face at the bottom of the second page, she looks like your wife...

And never ever tell me, that your knowlegde of Anatomy isn't good :D :chug:

Hope to see you soon.

Holy crap! I love your take of anatomy in this batch!!! You seems to have reall solid knowledge/idea how the body should look like and how to exagerate it right where they should be. Love it so much, I am more attracted to this type of anatomy rather than realistic wanna be. This is more real!!! Remind me of those kick ass animators at Disney Burbank...Those guys really know figure...and U are the man!!! VERY INSPIRING!!!

dCepT: I would love to attend a life drawing class. But there are no here in the city I live, so I study mainly from books.

mentler: My main area of Focus? Hmm, I don´t know. I do a lot of caricatures and cartoon stuff for living. I like it, it´s fun, but it not inspires me. There are so many artists in the past and here on CA that I admire. I really hope that I will find my own style one day, until then I enjoy my little studies.

The lady (Gouache) is from Anselm Feuerbach. The old man (Gouache) is from J. S. Sargent. I scanned the page with with the coin to check the size of the Gouache Paintings. Deco & van: Many thanks, friends!

Icey:I´m really sorry for updating my sketchbook so rare. I´m really happy that I have a lot of work, but I definately have to reserve more time to sketch and study. I have bougt a very interesting book from Charles Bargue (http://www.absolutearts.com/artsnews/2003/11/25/31574.html) with 50 great anatomy drawings. I do copy these drawings constantly. I have filled 3 Sketchbooks since the Amsterdam Workshop with C. Bargue Studies. 2/3 are Ref Drawings like page nr. rs078, 1/3 are No Ref Drawings. Sometimes I draw the same figure 10 times or more in a row. A very good lesson :^^: , but absolutely boring to show and post. :(
Hooray, at Saturday I will be for 12 days on holiday. I want to fill a Sketchbook in these days too, but again, with "boring" Bargue Drawings. ;)
