August 16th, 2005, 09:18 PM
For white lines/Shapes try gouache. I found that it works really great on toned paper for Highlight'n'shit
August 16th, 2005, 10:27 PM
Wow, just when I thought I've seen every sketchbook.
One word, joy.
August 16th, 2005, 10:56 PM
Wow- I love the way you express alot about a character by expression, pose, etc- I kinda can do the same thing (only alot worse) naturally, I think some of us have an eye for it.
Keep on truckin dude- Awesome.
August 16th, 2005, 11:11 PM

August 17th, 2005, 02:08 AM

For white lines/Shapes try gouache. I found that it works really great on toned paper for Highlight'n'shit
that isnt always practical to carry around a tube of gouache, a brush, and a cup of water.. id take a pen over all that in a heartbeat.. gouache is great though, i love gouache, just take a gander at my sketchbook for proof
August 17th, 2005, 03:53 AM
you sir are the reincarnation of a past master artist...beautiful work Rob..
August 17th, 2005, 04:08 AM

August 18th, 2005, 09:57 AM
Its aways a treat to see your sketchs, I specialy like the
how you model your realistic figures, and the way in wich you
translate this knowledge into your cartoony suff is pure genius :^^:
August 18th, 2005, 10:24 AM
Personally I can't stand the overtly cute, but I can't deny the skill with which you portray the little koala jobbies.
Love your shading technique, there is something very European about it, I don't know what, it might be the lighting, see it a lot in late French and Italian art books.
ps. The medieval koalas, are they done for the kinder egg people? they look like they'd make good figures.
August 18th, 2005, 10:38 AM
cypress hill would say:" Insane in the membrain..." ;)
August 18th, 2005, 10:49 AM

Art_Addict, sve, Yodaah, solorpower: Many thanks guys!

ch!z: Servus, no I never intended in a art school, no courses either, except of a 8 nights á 1,5 hours VHS-Anatomy course.
Bridgeman-Ref-Hand Studies, 3 of the hands are done with mirror, the foot is life, the complete arm and all the heads are out of my head:

man i am honestly our of words you have such an integral understanding of the anatomy
great inspiration here, every time man!
September 20th, 2005, 08:24 AM
Great Bridgman hand studies <> lot to learn from George <> one of greatest teachers of all time.
People wanting to learn to draw the figure should most definitely spend some time with him.
These drawings show how much information can be pulled out of his studies and should be a great inspiration to others.
September 20th, 2005, 08:33 AM
whohooo! Looking good. I wonder if you would draw a sequence (comic or such) with your non cute style? *bump* ;) And how about some dramatic lighting? :P
Gotta buy those oils this week hopefully. In the weekend the nights 've been to long to go buying.
Uh.. just bumped into my head, that I gotta write you something via e-mail. Man, I'm so forgetful.

Wow, I just can say: I love your sketchbook!
Especially liked the hands.
I haven´t seen all of it yet, just 3 pages, but it is very inspriring to see how you handle your pencils. It makes me want to go right to my little-wannabe-book and fill it with figure-studies :)
September 20th, 2005, 05:50 PM

October 17th, 2005, 05:50 AM
Hey mate, thanks for the inspiration!! (:O It's so thrilling to look at all this art!
Judging from your studies, I take it you have the book 'Anatomy for the artist', right? I recognize some of the references. ;) I have that one too.
Keep on posting the wonders here!
October 17th, 2005, 09:44 AM

October 20th, 2005, 09:00 AM
October 20th, 2005, 12:41 PM
I'm pretty lazy too. So I write in german:
Robolus, deine "degenesis" Gesichter find ich richtig gut. Besonders das Mädel mit den "windschiefen" Haaren. >:D Würde mich über mehr in dieser eher "kantigen", weniger "knuffigen" Richtung freuen.
Today I grabbed my Hogarth book from my other apartment. Maybe I also get a muscle mag or something like that and start to kill my weekness in drawing anatomy. I don't want those chains that disallow me to draw what I have in mind just because I lack the knowledge about it. I want it like your anatomy, wich comes just right from your hand down to paper. I know it does, I've seen it. So do not complain. :confident
I wish you some nice days down at the "ground-sea". /m\
October 20th, 2005, 12:50 PM
wow. for a "rough" sketch that's pretty darn awesome. love the arms, the belt, his boots, his expression....i like it a lot.
October 20th, 2005, 07:43 PM

October 21st, 2005, 06:43 PM
Awesome man, where is an update?! :p
November 1st, 2005, 10:31 AM
Alday, Bojee, Icey, Dan, JaneM, shyamshriram, Carnifex, Mike, Placeboast, Liam, Guntrouver, Sam, Jason, evidence, van: You all make me happy! Thank you!
Last week I was invited to draw kids during 6 "Sparkassen - KNAX" Events at the Bodensee in South Germany. This was a very loooong and painfull week! ;)
I had the opportunity to do a copy of one of the 400 (no joke) caricatures:
November 1st, 2005, 11:21 AM
You are great artis, all your work is wonderful.
But the character from Oct 16th. It's alive. Oh, he has so much of individual features and such a festive, victorious, confident attitude, that I woudl love him to always be in front of my eyes.
I'm very fond of the manner in which you drew him, I love those snakelike lines, all this subtle roughness, all the details that make me very excited.
I love his old hat with a frivolous feather, dusty boots (Hmmm, they look soft, like from fabric, not intimidating leather :O, even better, very interesting, unusual hint on character), the Belt :) ( he sure put all his savings in this belt), the whole pose full of delight but somehow lacking in seriousness, :). There is something comical about him. He probably prefers a jag of beer in a good company, than smashing someones brains.
And his face, wild and rough.
So it's , I don't know how to say it, ... unforgettable, in full harmony drawn piece. I adore it. Can I save it for myself? Only with honorable purposes. For observing and enjoying?
Thank you so much for this wonder
November 1st, 2005, 11:43 AM
Thats just gorgeous :) especially the ink caricatures :)
November 1st, 2005, 12:16 PM
Love the attitude of your cutes characters. Love the way you inked the little girl, love your stuff. Nice done Robolus ! :yayca:
November 1st, 2005, 05:13 PM
400 caricatures - omfg :x hehe great stuff as always!
November 3rd, 2005, 08:39 AM
man thats some fine stuff youve got in here. i really like that comic-stuff, shit thats so cute!
anyway, how u been doin? how was your vacation?
i didnt find find no time for writing a mail or something...
take care buddy,
November 3rd, 2005, 09:24 AM
good to see your stuff again. You were thoroughly missed in Prague. I drank at least one beer on you (or on a lot of people ... memories get a bit hazy). I suppose for a freelancing artist the chance to make some money is a bit more important. 400 caricatures ... no wonder you´re so fast in doing them :P.
Somehow we should manage to meet once again - we´re living not so far apart. Maybe I manage to do some small workshop/Sketchgroup thingy - just got the affirmation of my wife ;).
November 3rd, 2005, 02:01 PM
400 charicatures in 6 days? how long does it take you to draw one of them? And what kind of pen did you use for this?
I can only hope that I will draw that good one day.
November 3rd, 2005, 02:20 PM
November 12th, 2005, 08:59 AM
i don't post in here very often, but i just wanted to let you know, that after every of your updates i need to draw something. :]
besides: if you guys really set up some small workshop/sketchgroup thingy around here some time, i'd love to join in.
November 26th, 2005, 01:41 AM
Really fantastic work. I love how you have mastered several divergent styles.
December 15th, 2005, 07:22 PM

January 20th, 2006, 05:34 PM
Nice, i can see that you took enough attention to the masters habit of always "hiding" the eyes, showing their mind's uncertainty :)
January 20th, 2006, 06:50 PM
oh man Rob,
i thought i improved from my last oil painting but
this in comparision to the rembrandt one is really a great step.
Just have to try to paint on paper with my oil colours tomorrow.
(you didn´t grounded the paper with gesso this time?)
Still can´t figure out that you just use normal pencils and polycromos
because your drawings look... well i don´t know.
Also hau rein

March 28th, 2006, 12:55 PM
That last portrait conjured up a memory of the movie Trading Places, where Winthorpe is carted out of the Duke Brothers building in disgrace. The camera focuses on the disapproving portraits on the walls. Enough with the waffle. It's a great picture.
March 28th, 2006, 01:24 PM

You're one heck of an inspiration as well. If you have time, why not post some of those drawings you posted on art-of-robolus?
Oh and yeah, are there any artists who have influenced your style and helped it to become to its current state?
Well anyhoo, keep doing what you have done so far, looks like it's working :P

My old favorite back from the dead I see. Really good to have you back to raise the level here on CA. Those caricatyres drawn from life are especially my favorites here. I love the fact that you're not afraid to draw hard things such as cars, scooters and pool tables while having to do likeness and having to finish on time.
January 17th, 2010, 08:39 AM
I am so glad to see you posting again. I've promised myself when I get my studio built, I'm going to do studies of all your caricatures as part of my anatomy studies. I just put all your pics in a file in my important historical artists folder. Keep up the great work!

Hey Robolus, you're an amazing illustrator! Those insects you did with the ink brush have some great texture to them. Coincidently I just got done taking an anatomy class, and you're early anatomy sketches are fantastic! Anyawy, keep up the good work!
P.S. I saw you don't have any friends:S, I'll be your friend.
January 8th, 2011, 12:14 PM
Hey Robolus, thanks for the friend accept! I see you haven't posted in awhile. I can only assume you're too busy drawing some fantastic stuff! I haven't got much done lately myself; been busy with my new son! Take a look at my Sketchbook if you get a chance and give me some pointers. Talk to ya' soon.
January 18th, 2011, 09:52 AM
Hey Robolus, I just wanted to let you know I teach an entry level drawing class. I just got the job about a month ago at a local community college! Anyway, I was wondering if it would be okay to use some of your wonderful drawings in a presentation about light, shadow, and shading? I would not print them; only use for visual examples. Please let me know, I'll respect your decision either way.
