I posted this sketch in Doodle & Sketches before but wanted to make it an official work in progress.

it looks pretty good, except his picky looks a bit off.

Excellent stuff... The guy looks a little too old for the girl though... Maybe give him a smoother jawline? And his arm looks very uncomfortable stretched out like that...

I've started working on the BG. Here it is before any final touches. I wanted to get your thoughts before I start on the characters.

Nice colours. Well some photo reference could much help you. I suspect that you use some photo to overdraw it for characters. If you dont: congratulations! You could pull out more his right elbow

I'll post an update on the bg. I think it's looking better since this version. And I have begun coloring the characters.

Thanks, behemot5!

Danilo: Well some photo reference could much help you.
I have certainly used photo refs from the beginning of this piece, esp the BG. The characters are another challenge all together. As you can see, I've planted the girl's feet and redrew the legs on the guy - culled from a ref sources where the lighting doesn't match what I'm going for as to time of day and mood. I will need your guy's help in this area for sure. :)

O my gosh, what a totally lovely background, I can't stop staring at it!!
By any chance, did you use Painter??? If so, would you mind mentioning which brushes you used mostly? You see, I'm a beginner in using Painter, and I'm trying to get help from any place I can!
This is gonna be a fabolous picture!!

Thanks Cadence! I'm working in photoshop 7, using 3 or 4 brushes to get the desired effect - mostly drybrush and spatter and playing with brush presets for each. I haven't worked with Painter much. PS has been my tool for a couple of years now. These forums are a great place to get advice about digital painting, esp. Painter and PS, good luck - hopefully we'll see some of your work if you haven't already posted. :)

Here's the latest version of the background. I changed the foreground rock and added detail to the grass and ground. I applied a wash of pale azure blue to the distant peaks in an attempt to better seperate the foreground from the background. I also layed in some shadows of the characters (those dark streaks on the ground) but forgot to turn off the layer before I posted it.

Any comments so far?

Oy! the sketch is very clear and top-notch. The background is lovely.
Only nitpick is his right foot, seems in a aeird angle somehow and needs adjustment.
I look forward to see the finished piece :D

gorgeous bg, that's why climbers do what they do.

i personally like my summits with a little water on the horizon, but i live in the tropics, so... :)

nice painting!

This is very difficult to stand like this girl. All her weight is on her toes. It's possible only for short-time.

On the last pic i just figure-out, that You've redraw it. :-)

Here's the piece, getting back to it after several months. Just didn't have time to devote to this personal project. Beginning to define a level of detail - won't go much further in details until I block in all the tonal values as a base, especially on the guy's body and the legs on both he and the girl.

It's a slow process for me, so I may end up getting too busy again to finish it up, but in the meantime C&C is most appreciated.
