I just played Impossible Mission (no, that's not Mission Impossible) and Exile (no, that's not Myst) on the C64 and made some sketches while doing so. I can't help it, I always have to draw small thumbnails of retro game characters whenever I see one. Nothing impressive but I thought I'd post anyways.
It's 1/3rd A4 sheet at the top and a full sheet under that.

From top to bottom:
- A monument I drew while watching Discovery. It would be cool to design the '8th wonder of the world'. Mine would feature a large dome, a square of pillars with huge statues at the corners, a sloped base with two sphinxes on each side and paralell rows of statues decorating the road leading up to the giant stairs. All marble, gold and exclusive materials of course. Very Albert Speer ;) I would of course sit on a giant throne with eagleheads on it and look arrogant while scantily clad girls cling to my legs.
- Exile turrets and some robots.
- Exile fishes and some game characters.
- Impossible mission doodles. "Welcome visitor... Stay a while.... stay FOREVEERRR...!".
- Some Quake 3 weapons. I modded the GL so it shoots more like a cannon/mortar (instant detonation) cuz it's fun gamplay to handle those trajectories. The GL model is a boring box tho so hence the sketches.

By the way, Exile is definately one of the best games I have ever played. It's hard to explain what it's about though...

I'll paint some thumbnails up later. Perhaps.

Now thats a good thunderdome idea!!! "CREATE THE 8TH WONDER OF THE WORLD"

I really dig your work Nick. You look like you have a lot of fun, and that is the most important thing. Great sketches I particularly enjoy the first 3rd of them.

Very cool mix of sketches. I agree, it really does look like you had fun with them... very loose but crisp line work. Nice!

Thanks. Yeah it's great fun doing these. I hate enlarging and refining things with pencil though. The coloring photoshop method is more fun. Here's a painted version of Triax and Finn. Finn design is from the C64 version. Triax is inspired by what I think is the BBCmicro cover/logo screen.

Hey, I used to LOVE Impossible Mission- little bots, smoothest character animation on C64 ever (as far as I've ever seen) and evil scientist with nerdy voice!
In fact I recently heard a dance track which incorporated those classic taunts 'Stay a while, stay forever!' and 'Destroy him my robots!'

Thanks for the jaunt down memory lane ;)

Here's some fishies from Exile. If you carry the deep sea one up to the surface it explodes!

I think I read somewhere that the character animation in Imp. mission was ripped from an unused wintergames animation and the whole game sorta spawned from that.

I'm pretty happy with these, but I'm terribly biased when it comes to yellow robots. Please excuse the sideview. I've omitted the furthermost legs and details.
They are not really for the exile project but they were on the same sheet. Syd Mead is king with yellow robots. I'd like to see him do a Battle version of the cargo lifter in aliens.

Red - Heavy cannon.

Green - Rapid fire & flak.

Blue - Close combat & mining claw

Well, I've lost all interest in my now boring-ass aquarium.
