View Full Version : ConceptArt.Org FINE ART (draw+painting) main page gallery submissions and nominees
Jason Manley
October 15th, 2007, 01:48 PM
Hey All,
ConceptArt.Org is currently working on it's new Fine Art main page gallery section (we have seven spots left to fill!) and we are looking for nominees for the first positions opening up. You know the thumbnails atop conceptart.org? Yeah those galleries...we are building a Fine Art section to support this forum and promote the artists sharing and giving here in the community who are doing the best work. We believe the Fine Artists of this community also deserve the big spotlight that the major traffic of this site brings (averaging around 1.3 million international visits per month currently).
Here are the qualifications to consider.
Fine Art main page candidates must:
1. be exhibiting professional quality work here on conceptart.org.
2. be helping others here on the site
3. have have joined conceptart.org and been an active member for at least 30 days.
4. be setting a great example for others in the Fine Art community.
One does not need to be exhibiting in galleries, however, gallery quality work is a must.
Nominees should submit their works in the following manner.

The Fine Artists atop the main page now will be moved to this section, so you are aware. Whitaker, Dobsky, Hussar etc... will be joining those of you who will have been deemed main page gallery members by the jury.
Mindcandyman, and emilyg are two off the top of my head who will be offered spots, however even they need to submit to the due process...though they have spots guaranteed if interested of course! Decisions will be made on Nov 1. So now is the time!!!! Join us atop the boards!
Looking forward to seeing the works and hearing what the judges have to say.
Best,
Jason

Jason, I would like to do this but there are a couple of points that are confusing me:
1) Do we make our submission as a post in this thread but laid out in the example submission you gave in your post?
2) You mention sculpture yet I am taking this to be a painting request - are both required? I'm slightly unclear.
Many thanks.

fixed the thread...It should not have said sculpture. The post is self explanatory if you click the example link that shows what the photographers are doing.

Bio - Hailing from the forlorn reaches of New England, visual artist Tristan Henry-Wilson works his unique magic with consummate flair and a knowing ease. A steady go-to illustrator for many popular music bands and magazines, he has quickly become a regular presence throughout online and print media. However, despite his growing success in illustration, Tristan still labors away for days on end with a feverishly beatific glint in his eye and an oil-paint dabbed brush in his hand, causing some to cite him as a rising personality in “Nueu American Painting.” One thing is clear: this man has his finger jammed on the pulse.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I'm more than happy staying in the illustration ghetto! I'd love to see San Base on the fine art page, though. And definitely Chris Bennet. And who's that former Soviet Central Asian guy who posts the bizarre biblical/historical pieces from time to time?

you know, having to submit yourself requires a certain amount of selfconfidence and ego. That Im afraid many fine artists don't have. While this is rather charming on their part (cough* elwell*) It will limit your choices severely.
and chris and dorian, those are lovely

Hey Jason, could you clarify something? Are you looking for pieces in non-digital mediums, or pieces that are less illustrationy, or are you looking for pieces that meet both of those requirements?
(In other words, what about illustrative works made in non-digital mediums?)
Thanks!

"selfconfidence and ego"
I'm the poster child for ego. I suppose I have my share of self confidence, but it's variable.
Basically, I'd like to see Ilaekae throw his hat in the ring. He started a superb thread on underpainting (Edit: well I guess he didn't exactly start it, he was the guy who stepped up and put major hours into explaining it) and I thought his self portrait on 11/1/06 was cool.

Bio - With both my mother and step father being professional painters, I always had a great deal of support for pursuing a serious career as a visual artist. This started out as an interest in comic book illustration, but over the years I became more curious about painting and, after finishing highschool, I attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This introduced me to the gallery world and for the next several years I focussed on this aspect, doing mainly representational figurative work. About two or three years ago, I decided that I still had a strong interest in genre illustration and began pursuing both fields in a sort of balancing act. Since then, my focus has settled more on illustration, but I still work through my gallery and am currently attempting to find where the two can meet in the middle.

Jason Wesley Clark
San Diego, California
Biography: I was born in Mtn. View, California in April of 81 and have been scribbling on things for about as long. When I was 18, I made the standard migration from San Francisco down to San Diego where I went to school at State. No formal training in the visual arts, but I do love them. In school I studied Philosophy (with an emphasis in Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Literature) under my mentors Matthew Calarco and Peter Atterton. Later I jumped ship and pursued a second major in Classics (with an emphasis in Greek and Classical Humanities.) Now I just wish I had taken some drawing classes. I’ve never sold anything, so I’m not sure I qualify as a professional, but I do dig this website, so I figured what the hell right. For now the goal is to continue learning and to improve my technique. Having once viewed Dore's illustrations for the Divine Comedy, the realization set in pretty quickly... "Well, at least I know I'll never be as tight as this guy." Since then I've tried to make a more realistic assessment of my long term goals, with a tendency to view everything I do simply as practice for the next thing. The final piece is the only one that matters, and until then there's always room for improvement.

While there, he assembled his thoughts and sketches into a limited edition book titled "Lentamente Italia". David currently writes an ongoing feature for Drawing magazine on anatomy and also contributes to myamericanartist.com.

(I'd hate to give the impression I take painting/my carreer lightly)
Luke is a self taught artist who began his career 4 years ago after a 4 year stint in the IT industry... wait, why I'm I refering to myself in the 3rd person?.
In late 03 I decided to leave my job and take on a stint at backpacking around Europe. Five months later I returned with the intention of getting back into the IT field but during a 3 week 'workfree' period I tried my hand at painting.. after 4 years of perserverance and mixed results I've now moved from my parents barn in a small quiet town and am residing back in Auckland where I paint fulltime. To date I've had one group show and one solo exhibition with another solo sceduled for July next year and am constantly aiming to experiment and improve my technical abilities. With a little luck and a hefty spoonfull of determination I hope to keep painting well beyond my first cataract.
Much respect to everyone who's posted.

Bio : I was born in Kapellen, Belgium as Tom Van de Wouwer and developed an interest in drawing from an early age on. After highschool I studied both photography and animation for 2 years but the interest in the more traditional arts persisted. After meeting Carl Dobsky on one of the workshops I was pointed into the direction of atelier study and eventually found my way to Studio Escalier France. I attended the atelier on a merit based scholarship where I studied under the guidance of Timothy Stotz, Michelle Tully and Ted Seth Jacobs. I currently paint and draw full time building a body of work to exhibit.

David, Michelle, Lukias, and Art_Addict - just wow.
Really - wow for everyone who has posted in this thread. I get so used to seeing all the game art, that seeing these works are really very inspiring and refreshing for me. Some of you who have posted here I had *no* idea that you did anything like this. Others I was aware of but it's great to see again.
I hadn't intended on commenting on everyone's work here, due to the nature of the thread. But it is really awesome to see all of this fantastic work in one consolidated place. I hope I'm forgiven for cluttering this up with essentially ass-pats. I do apologize, but you guys deserve it for work well done!
Tristan - I love the combination of graphical elements into the painting on the last one. I love the whole intimate feeling you convey with your work.
Chris Bennett You have a wonderful aesthetic that reminds very much of 1940's style poster art for some reason. But it's deeper than that.
dorian Just wow.
DavePalumbo I always enjoy your work, Dave. Regardless of whether it is a book cover or something else. Your subjects are always handled with the utmost care and sensitivity, and you have beautiful brush work when you let it show.
arttorney I really enjoy your landscapes. The Monterey Morning is especially evocative for me. And I like Montezuma's Castle.
Jasonwclark Your work is like a monochromatic acid trip. I love it.
Mentler, your work as always is just freaky-fantastic.
Brittons Lovely figure work. I am especially fond of the charcoal studies.
AztcFireFlower I love the variety of characters you've shown. And again, you can't go wrong with the charcoal work in my book.
stevekim Awesome change of pace from the realism. A lot of energy with these that I enjoy. Love the one with the dogs.
David Kassan You are the measure.
Seedling The austere simplicity of your work is just beautiful, and speaks volumes in the silence.
Lukias I love your figures. They remind me of people I've known. Your brushwork is simply lovely.
Art_AddictYour first piece posted really grabs me. I love unfinished works, and this one is very striking for me. That's not to downplay your other works at all.
Cheers,
~Shane

Bio - Born in Dallas, TX in 1980, Jonathan’s first artistic endeavour began at the University of Pennsylvania where he started basic drawing and figure drawing courses. At the age of 22, his drive for more rigorous and traditional training led him to apply to the classical realist atelier, Pantura Studios, to study under masters Hans-Peter Szameit and Sanna Tomac. After studying for nearly three years, Jonathan and his wife moved to Texas where he began building his body of work and honing his skills. In addition, he is teaching traditional atelier methods to a small group of committed and talented students.

Bio - Born in Mesa, Arizona in 1982. Nate began his serious art studies in high school under Dan Bevington, who helped inspire him to push for a career in the arts. Armed with the inspiration, Nate began his long journey of bouncing around in the arts, first beginning at ASU, only to find the instruction severely lacking. Looking to push further, he left ASU and found his way into a technical 3D and animation school, only to find he enjoyed the life drawing classes more than the computer and animation work. This pushed him after graduating to pursue further education in the fine arts, and at the age of 22, began his traditional academic studies at Pantura Studios in South Dakota under Hans-Peter Szameit and Sanna Tomac. After a few setbacks though, he was forced to return to Arizona for a couple years to work on his own and pick up the pieces. Nate finally had the opportunity again to study in an academic studio environment, and is currently beginning his oil painting training under Jonathan Hardesty in Dallas, Texas in his studio.

Hi,
Another contribution from a girl- ahem WOMAN! I am an old lady barely strong enough to get my walker to the canvas.
I have been doing illustration, painting and teaching since the dawn of time.
I love stuff with colorful wigs and crazy costumes.
My first artistic inspiration came from the Varga girl centerfolds, my uncles used to pin up on the outhouse walls in our family cottage.
I was born rather late in the day, January 20th 1943, in the middle of World War Two, in Shelton Connecticut. My father was an advertising executive and my mother was a nurse. I was followed by three lovely sisters, with who I am still on speaking terms.
I had an idyllic childhood. My first memory is wheeling about on a tricycle in a yard flanked by a field dotted with sheep on one side and a snake den on the other. My first significant piece of art was a picture of a Coca-Cola bottle, entitled "Soda Not Being Drunk" at age four.
Grade school was equally memorable except for two unfortunate incidences. The first occurred when I caught my dress on the top of a slide and descended without the skirt. The second was when I was called into the principal's office for brawling on school grounds. Needless to report I was always called on for school murals and art projects of all kinds.
High School was made infinitely exciting by my ability to decorate the margins of my text books. My Headmistress told my mother years later, that the Latin text book was the most special.
In High School I was fortunate to have Sanford Lowe as my art instructor. He was the director of the New Britain Museum of Art and a fine painter himself. He was responsible for helping to create its magnificent collection of American art including Andrew Wyeth and the wonderful American impressionists such as Childe Hassam and Frederick Frieseke. This was what I thought art was supposed to be and what I wanted to emulate. I have not changed my opinion.

portraiture in the tradition of the Boston School. The artist handles action adeptly, and I was most impressed with the subtle gradations within the shadows."
