View Full Version : A sketchbook with alluring... something possibly?

A new sketch book because the old was was filled with more excuses than actual art... then it was severely neglected never to be seen again. I'm 20, with the handwriting of a five year old, and I hope to generally get better at this art nonsense.
post one for thumbnail oooooooooo.

the snail is based off of an old anatomical print, some pattern studies and life drawing from the summer. I work in a really big sketchbook so I have to take photos of the pages, hence the shifting quality of the images. (and also some images shifted from the first post)

I want to learn how to draw without reference. it seems every time I put the pencil down.. I forget everything I know. very interesting. chicken scratches everywhere.
so I decided to work on gestures some more. here's some sketches from transit (surprise surprise) and a few pages of many notes from an awesome collection of handouts by Walt Stanchfield on gesture. found it really helpful, now I just have to put it into practice.

cannot for the life of me freehand cubes in perspective. so more rulers and lines and such. not pictured: pages of disembodied cubes, and half-assed gestures. I'll put up some... uhh... complete-assed figures soon.
The weird dog thing is referenced from somebody else's sketch but I didn't write down who so now we will never know. The digital painting of drift wood... is very undriftwood like, got the texture wrong and some of the edges are much too soft. I'll have to try that again.
crits anyone?

speedysam - my notes are up because they look cool, I doubt anyone could actually read it if they tried. if you want the information contained in said notes though, click the link in that post to the gesture book thingy.
first digital sp from life where I am impersonating a plank of wood, apparently. I had trouble not turning the face into a muddy mess, not sure if I succeeded. this took too long to do. so slow.
I see a few problems that I may go back and fix when I'm not sick of looking at it. does anyone want to tell me what I could improve in this? pretty please?

Nice pen work here, I really like the loose pencil gestures the best though, keep it up! When cross hatching try to use the cross angles at a little more or less than a straight 90 degrees, it helps to define darker areas and shapes after the first couple passes...
Those patterns...can I take a guess

thanks for the tip rabid peanut. I never read that book, the one I was studying was Rendering in Pen and Ink by Arthur Guptill, old school dip pens! the patterns were either randomly made or based off of Harry Clarke's ink drawings.
Alice - it sure does. Can't vouch for the quality, but here's an update at least.
Most of these were done during the workshop, ended up with more pages of notes than drawings though. I was sick the entire time and was feeling really crappy. sadface. hope I didn't get anyone else sick.

Hey Elyse, it was great meeting you at the workshop! I really enjoyed hanging out.
Great stuff in here. I'd love to see you try another self portrait after Manley's colour theory lecture. The drawing on your last one is good, but the colour is a little weak. The saturation and contrast in the chair and background really draw the eye away from your face.

January 10th, 2008, 06:20 PM
0kelvin- had a blast at the workshop too. I will defiantly use my new found understanding of colour and whip out some more self portraits. For the last one using the bright bright saturated colours was a stylistic decision. The muddy colours in the face really need work(especially on the right side), but with the background colours I wanted to show the ungodly, abomination of nature, flourecesnt red of my chair and how it grays anything naturally coloured, like the face.
heres picture of it, unedited. Ok ok so maybe I was just so excited about being able to use that hideous saturated colour I didn't care how much it would distract from the picture as a whole.

The Great CA Outage of '08 resulted in me going to lifedrawing. The model could not hold any pose more than 30 seconds and the long poses migrated...drastically. So that was difficult. Did a bad job at drawing the complete figure.

Hello Hello, looks like I'm practically the last one to swing by after Seattle, how embarassing.
The digital selfportrait on the first page is GOOD, maybe the best thing you have posted here. Why?
1. likeness
2. Good areas of value, descriptive of the forms
Now of course, you really didn't go into detail in the clothing, which is bad. But only because you didn't crop it out or otherwise reduce it too a background element...if you understand what I mean...
Also it would have been nice if you had added some detail (highlights) to the hair.
Other than that I have only one word of advice, in general:
When working with a pen, hatching in an arbitrary direction is dangerous, crosshatching is almost always BAD. Better to try and use those lines to describe planes, texture, contours. On the other hand I really liked the ink wash thumbnails you did back on the first page. Why not experiment more with that, or maybe charcoal? Something that lays down nice loose areas of value quickly.
anyways, it was nice meeting you, I'll definitely be checking this here thread regularly.
PS
I like the LMS too. :P. But the 'smiley face' is ridiculous, its seems like you're disrespecting your own work. The real power of the composition and symbolism is unquestionable though. The colors might be a bit confusing and the different amounts of rendering / detail are a bit jarring but those are my only other crits.
octopus_interphone
January 30th, 2008, 08:24 PM
bludhund - thanks for taking the time to give me a crit, it is very appreciated. I didn't finish the digital sp because overall I didn't like where it was going, super smooth and really stiff looking. Thought it reminds me that this sketchbook is severely lacking in pieces that have a lot of time dedicated to them. Certainly have to work on my crosshatching.
about the lms, there were so many inconsistencies and problems and then time ran out, so I said screw it, I'm done. The only thing I do like is the composition, and the colour blue. everybody likes blue.
my chow is chowing all chow-like in the chow thread, I want to do more on it before posting it in here.
Meanwhile here's a charcoal skull I did last night, I now see that the lower beak has to be fixed up and the edges in the light have to be a bit sharper. I've been looking at it too long though, anybody else see more problems with it?

thanks Izer, I made that thing up there out of brick clay, started with maybe 100 lbs of it? I sculpted vaguely naturalistic shapes to make a composition, it is meant to be outdoors and to fit into it's enviroment so it is based off the various textures of a forest floor.

Organization, clarification! I was just telling someone; if your values are organized, painting in a limited value range is a moot point. Make sure that they fall accurately across form and you don't have to make it so uncontrasted. To quote Kei, "if it's black, make it black"

Thanks Lake that was helpful. I will try to be make the values much more accurate and clear with the next one.

That's because your values are better organized in the early stages; into light and shadow. It's simplified, but it's correct. Your highlights should be much more understated; your shadows should be less vague.
here:
http://smartflix.com/vidcaps/lvidcap_3762.jpg
is a good example, though simple, of well organized value. Light - halftone - shadow in a logical progression.

update more! i like your confident lines
that sculpt is really interesting, have you tried lighting it with a harsh light to see interesting shadows? you might see something you don't want. I remember i made this samurai mask from leftover presentation boards, then lighted from the top with a flashlight. Which made a samurai silhoutte! holding a sword! or i was just hallucinating!
This might help, the eyes is what we usually focus on faces. great way to build a head is to work from outside to inside, work the eyes last because for me it is distracting and i lose focus on other characteristics of a face that really makes up the essence, such as hairline and just structure. hope it helps!

#130 and 131 are *charming*! The texture and loose lines really work for you.
The spaceship is intriguing. Very jellyfish-like and yet not organic. Which feels a bit counterintuitive/funny, but that could maybe be the point? (PS I know nothing about spaceship-design-related things, so disregard as desired!)

Hey there! It was great seeing you tonight! I'm not on CA much these days (wow, this is my first post in almost a year!), but we should totally keep in touch. I was going to give you my info at the workshop, but I had to run before it was over. My email is ericpoulton at gmail.com, if you want to email me, add me on Facebook, whatever.
I like the page of character thumbnails on post #124. There are some fun costumes in there. And the transparent jellyfish thing in #130 is awesome. I love the sense of humour you put into your art.
The jellyfish spaceship is a cool design, but the painting doesn't look like it's to the scale you've labelled it with. It looks quite little. This is partly due to it being painted almost entirely with big, chunky strokes. Something this big should have, at least implied, a lot of small details. You've got a bit of finer detail in the yellow structure coming out the bottom, and I think that's the strongest part of the painting. You almost have to approach something that big like it's a cityscape. You could even use something like those mirrored sketches from posts #141 and #142, grab bits of that abstract detail and throw it into parts of the ship.
Or you could just change the scale to 1000 cm and call it a day.

0kelvin - while I was working on it I couldn't figure out what makes a isolated object look large or small, but the detail makes a lot of sense now. I'm done with that one but on the next I will have to keep that in mind.

lav - for the terrible quality drawings I use tegakie, one of those online drawing apps. no layers, no pen pressure, no eyedropper, no textures, and limited colours. Sometimes I find it easier to work with limitations so I don't get stuck thinking about the millions of ways I can render something.
