Teen Challenge #36: Gothic Angel

G'day Guys, kick ass stuff on the last round, lets get more dudes and dudets participating in this one.

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic:
Gothic angel, male or female try and play around with what an Angel is.

Please add a small description or storyline. We don't want a five page essay but make it nice, brief, and to the point. Especially if there is something in your design which needs explaining.

Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.

The Deadline:
Monday, October 29th at midnight PST

Gothic doesn't necessarily mean the subculture with the same name. Gothic implies a whole period of time/style in which people lived and draw influences from.

There's so many different ways to go with this topic :)
I usually think of gothic architecture at the word 'gothic'
but also of goth music, and girls in long dresses and corsets..

I'm thinking of doing one of those statues found at the sides of a gothic church.. Don't know the word in English, they're called "stijlfiguren" in Dutch.
But maybe a pretty girl with black wings in a corset is more fun :P

or I'll just puss out like I do in every contest and challenge... :)

Anyways, the story:

The gothic angel is a story of Satans most malicious plan to rule the world above hell.

He created a demonic angel and gave him half of his dark powers.
Within days hundreds of heavenly angels were killed. Nothing seemed to match the creatures ancient powers. His axe poured through any shield, his helmet could withhold any blow and the hellish aura that surrounded him drove the weakminded mad.

Hope came when after 600 horrific days the demon began to weaken.
Even though his dark armor was perfect in design, his pale skin was no match for the sun.

Finally at the 666th day since his arrival the Gothic angel fell from the sky.

On to other peoples posts, Janovakov I really like the second angel in your most recent post and I would love to see how that would turn out if you continued to render it. Lewis your painting and character design looks great but the background seems to bright to me and doesn't really seem to work properly with your character. Chaichan I hope you finish that it's looking great at the moment.

The text to the left is in Gothic (the language). Gothic is a ancient Germanic Language. The text is the Lord's Prayer, because when I think Gothic I associate it with something Christian. Also an angel is a rather Christian thing :)

here's some comments before i go to bed since im waiting for my hair to dry :)

WolfBane: what can i say? totally kick ass! he looks more like a "bad-ass rocker angel" rather than goth to me, but damn i love the abstract texture brush use in the background, great job man :}

aka6: I'm afraid linkin park isn't remotely close to goth or emo at all :P (especially these days) but props for good humour though! really dig the small details such as a ring on the halo :)

Mehz: sweet sketch man! i cant wait to see this more developed, just a question, is there a symbolic reason for the 6 fingers? sorta curious :) btw i really like your halo design :}

JanNovakov: EDIT: this is for the second pic you posted on the first page of this thread ----> I personally liked your first one better actually :) but here's some pointers for the anatomy errors i see in your second piece. some proportional issues pop out first, her head and hands are too small for her body, and her arms are a bit short. <---

EDIT: oh crap i just noticed you updated some new ones on the second page :^^;:

anyways...did you get reference for the second pic? because the proportions are much much better. just compare it to the same one you posted with that post and you can tell the improvement, the lighting is fantastic and moody too, i hope you really push this one further man cuz it is damn awesome :)

Apts: well your first one wasn't all that bad, i think the mood felt more "gothic" than your new piece, however, i really like the idea of arms turning into wings. perhaps you could have feathers growing down from the shoulders to slowly merge with the wings rather than a sudden change? also try adding some gothic symbols should give her a more well, gothic-y look :)

ciots: damn dude, i haven't visited your sb in ages...been too busy sorry :( are you gonna push this one further? cuz i sorta like whats going on in the composition :)

Evil_Sloth: geez man, you're sure improving fast :) i really like the composition and her wings (halo too!) but most of all.....her chest. i know that sounds really dodgy and all but damn! that is some awesome rendering RIGHT THERE...you should upload a detail of that :P

pokepetter: why dont you try just drawing with pencils? i know i'm going to sound like an ass for saying this but messing around with photos and struggling to render with a mouse on the computer just isn't worth it. it certainly isn't gonna help you improve as much and if u draw it in pencil it would be much easier for us to crit and help you improve. :)

Lewis: keep pushing it man, its looking good :) i'm not sure if its cuz its in WIP stage or not but some places such as the helmet and the blade look a bit flat, the crack between the shield is rendered better though, good job :) I'm also a bit confused by the light source as his torso is so brightly lit and judging by his robe there seems to be a secondary blue light source behind him? yet none of this is affecting the shield as much as it should considering the shield is metal (unless those are some damn fine iron abs he has there :P)
some more polish could make this awesome, keep at it man :)

Ampersand: great job!!! i really like the composition, not to mention the awesome flowing hair :) some crits for the anatomy would be that her left (our right) leg seems just a tad bit too long and the exaggeration on the twisting of her right (our left) ankle might be too extreme, also you might want to tone down her knee caps a bit as they look a bit bruised and swelling atm :) lastly, some other colours could make this piece "pop" much more as the current colour scheme is a bit mono around the purple area
seriously though, i cant wait to see this finished and you're pretty damn awesome for 17, im jealous :(

Blaz: dude that WIP friggin rocks! i think the composition would be more balanced if u had her sword to the right more (although i like the pose...) or maybe have a piece of her skirt flow more to the right as i feel its sorta empty there :S. i really wanna see this finished though, looking damn awesome :)

Goog: a non-humanoid entry! i cant really give you any crits sorry but i think you know what you are doing, some more variation in colour would be cool but you're probably gonna do that, digging the mood and the gargoyle design though :)

Chaichan: what can i say? pretty damn awesome, it is (busting out my yoda groove yeah! :P)

neacser: nice job! is this your finished piece or a wip? i think the angel looks way too in focus compared with her surroundings which makes it weird cuz i feel that jagged piece of rock thingy to the left looks like it's closer to the viewer, however i really dig your design and i think if you push the anatomy forms further a bit it would look really great :)
ps: the claws on her wings might be a bit too bright, they're sorta drawing attention away from the angel herself.

Iliada: looking nice man, the angel's body form looks pretty good but as her hair blocks most of her back its hard to judge :S im definitely interested in seeing your finished piece though

just one thing though, i'm confused about the light source in your piece, if you look at the sin city comics or whatever you'll see its actually done strictly following and exaggerating the black and white relationship in relation to light and shadow, and in your piece i honestly cant tell where the light is coming from sorry :S are u going for a sorta minimalistic illustration approach? forgive me if it seems like im being a jerk or something. i honestly think this black and white style looks better when actually making sense according to light and shadow.

markey2d: hey man, try to slow down on the burn tool or colour burn layers in photoshop a bit, step back and consider the pose (is it a bit stiff?), the anatomy (are the proportions correct?) and etc... i suggest getting some reference if you are having anatomy trouble since hey, even the pros do it so theres nothing to be ashamed of or anything, the worst it can do is help you improve :P keep working hard man :)

and the fact that the overall mood is darker then what you'd expect with an angel, makes it imo pretty relevant to the topic

Thanks a lot for the critique, the Frank Miller style was exactly what I was going for, I love his stuff and figured this would be a good project to try it with. I had originally been thinking of a light source from the right, but I think what really screwed me over was when I went and did the whole left wing black, I'll probably fix that up today along with a couple of other spots which will hopefully help a bit.

The signs were all there. When Jesus came back he had the scares on his hands. These bodys exsist in the after life just as the did on earth. Jonas now for all enernity will see him self and see the scares of a life he now knew was wasted.
"There is opposition in all things" These words were deeper and more true then eny one could imagine. There was a war. This "heaven" was not the paradise popularly belived. This was a new exsistance. Where spirits and angels fought Evils beyond Demons. With out sword or gun or even fists angels would fight.
Spirits were power full but easely broken. Thats why.. thats why we lived a live. We are spirits who were given a body in a mortal existance, to learn how to use them together. The power of spirits in the stronghold of a body. To learn to use them together.
"I failed to learn anything" Jonas lived a life of party's and frends, and mock rituals to gain "power from darkness". "How foolish" by Being distracted by plesures of the flesh he never try'd to wield his spirit.
Devils distract men with the bodys "natural" disires to keep them from true power. The devil was only a minion.

Grimed by his thoughts Jonas marched among angels to a fight he may never return from. His fisical scares will now be joined with injurys of unknown extreems. He felt it fitting.

Ok, here is my final Gothic angel. It might not look very Gothic at first, but you need the explanation:

When I thought Goth, one of the things I thought of first was Christianity. The first thing when I thought Angel was Christianity. So I chose to use Christianity as a link between Angel and Gothic.

Gothic is a ancient Germanic language, which isn't spoken anymore, and only few people worldwide can write it. The words engraved in the stonewall are pages from the New Testament, written in Gothic, and the words engraved over the angel's head is the Lords Prayer in Gothic, and the tattoo she has on her lower left leg is Gothic for 'Angel'. She is a Gothic Angel, and can thus read Gothic :)

I'm very proud of my picture, because after all I'm only 14 (though I know the rest of you are about my age, or a bit older ;)), this is my second attempt of doing something from scratches in Photoshop, and that I've used a touchpad (difficult...). I've probably used more time than most (though my result isn't as good as most) but it has been extremely fun and I've learned SO much! =)

Critics are VERY welcome (I would give the rest of you crits but I feel far from capable to do it)

I'm already looking forward to the next challenge!

Edit: I uploaded a new picture, now with the rose. The rose is a symbol of the earth, the life and mortality, and the angel is a symbol of heaven, death and immortality. The rose is from our world and colored, the angel is from somewhere far above, and has no colors. They symbolise opposites and contrasts, but still they have a connection. There's some yin and yang about it; primal opposing but complementary principles.

My idea was that the whole picture should be in grayscale, and then the rose red. But, I didn't know how to draw the rose, as I had no reference. I've used myself as a model for the angel (I wore clothes on the picture though!).

addleheaded:I think the wings are nicely placed and good! It'd be nice if the hands and feet were finished. The creases(?) of the skirt should follow the legs a little.. And there's something with her hair, maybe if you'd give it more volume or let it cover the forehead more it'd look better?

Overall, I like the classic teenage angel concept. Good luck.

ohh by the way apts : great work ....dnt mind my critique (as you didnt ask for it ) ...but i wanted to ask what makes your angel gothic ?? its got a little tribal-ish touch dnt you think ???...and something about his right leg seems a little wierd ...?!?!?! is it sorta twisted inwards ...as it seems from the knee-cap tht he has got ?!?!?!

hey, vibhas_virwani well firstly a crit is always welcome and I've moved the knee guard around a little, it's still not quite right but I've got lectures today and I don't have time to sort it properly, anyway as for the gothic..ness well the symbol across his chest should read as gothic as should the belt and boots although I've made a real mess of the boots and yeah I know it looks a bit tribal, I blame the hair mainly but I'm horrible with hair (see my other image for reference) so I went for the short lined stuff.
