Wow man! Theese things are awsome!
I love your rendering technique, very tight.
Your foreshortening might need some additional work but otherwise I really dig your style, full of confidence it seems.

Keep at it!

Maestro Andres
October 20th, 2007, 07:34 PM
You have a nice style going on in here. That rendering is very appealing as well as your ideas, the first ones kinda me laugh because of the exaggeration XD:teeth:

My only critique is with the faces you paint. I like the colors you used but I notice some errors with the proportions mainly with the spacing between the eyes which should be one eye length.

Anyways, I'll stick around to watch some more :)

marioucci
October 20th, 2007, 08:07 PM
Yo,

iMaiM - Thank you! Ill try and keep it going:)

Maestro Andres - Que tal tio? Yes I am an even crappier painter as I am with the pen.. Ill get there with those damn proportions someday for sure. Thanks for the pointers man.

today is a wip, the pen and a first layer of colours.

this is a tattoo parlour in London.

October 20th, 2007, 09:33 PM
hiya mario, as i´ve opened ur thread the first thing i thaught was , uh wtfkn amzng linework is there , especially ur pens knocked me of. second where the portraits in here i liked.

if you´r figures would a bit more fluid it´s the onlything i could wish for. i would suggest u to make some quick perspective guidelines onto your paper and just put in some kinda skelletons or matchstick men or onything that moves in it , wihtout watching anatomy or masses and of course no detail. only movement. this would sure help to imporve your figures a lot . and yeah keep it loose like u already do .
putting that crit aside , your linework inspired me alot, thnx for posting :).

Man kickass penwork, really works well with your style. Keep up those rendered ones especially, youve got great control and character to them.
Watch your colour application though, the colour and temperature blends got a bit to smeared in the open canvas studies, you still need to think in terms of planes and values and how theyre changing, otherwise youll end up with a bruised look rather than natural skintone.
this ones (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=222006&stc=1&d=1192902558) a great start, would like to see more similar approaches

i think her right hand is not totally anatomically correct...

hehe - i love that last one man. cool distortions of form and space - like with the pattern on her shirt. she's super cute too. they have a certain simon bisley quality about them. which actually makes me curious how one of these would look when done traditionally.
keep it coming man.

SirGreenSock
October 25th, 2007, 07:43 PM
Im digging your playing with patterning in your work. I agree with Tensai, it would be really interesting to see that done traditionally, especially since its difficult to get those happy accidents going digitally.
You couldve probably pushed your darks a bit more on the girl to get some form to contrast the flat patterns. On that same note, i dont think the shading on the sweater was necessary, since it only serves to contradict the pattern, youd need to either leave just the pattern, or distort the pattern to suit the shading.

Tensai - thanks a bunch for the suggestions man.

Joatley - thats really cool thank you!

November 6th, 2007, 07:54 PM
you're really seem to be finding your own way with these paints. last one especially looking very good. it has the same solidness to all the forms etc but a bit more variety or just nice balance in the textures of the whole thing.
very cool.

marioucci
November 7th, 2007, 09:12 PM
Hey Tensai - cheers mate. so hard to keep the forms whilst thinking in terms of lights and shadows. And on top of that the necessity to improvise the lack of technique with some (hopefully) coolness. Thank you for the observations.

and of course I did another paint over an old sketch. Lots more of those to come.

Good work man, i've always thought about what it would be like to rework or paint over an older peice of work. And I will say that your digis are definitely going in the right direction. Also your understanding of anatomy is pretty impressive. One thing i'd like to see is some fully drawn or painted character designs not just the close up of the upper body or torso but full view! I know you can do it! Anyways thanks for hitting up my sketchbook. I look forward to some updates!!

Haxxxor - You rock!

Chupacabra - damn! what can I say. to have you saying what you said here is just like a B12 shot.

D@niel - dude! thanks a lot man!! Im off to reply on your SB right now.. that is some wicked stuff.

todays menu is a Constantine like character.. the proper one not the pansy ass americanized one... well at least that was the intention. please forgive the technique, or the lack of, used to express one of my favourite characters.

I find your "randoms" front facing/rendered lower torso man & the side view large arm/black face in style monumental. They remind me of Michelangelo's unfinished sculptures where he has faces/ hands/ etc. exposed out of the marble, but the chisels marks. The marks of his hand are both evident and beautiful. Especially the large arm/black face which by including the dotted slightly radial pattern almost looks like chisel marks. Well there's my two cents..they talked and I listened.

this is really shaping up nicely man, I love the transitions rich skin tones. IT is very inspiring to see someone improve like you do. Are you doing to add some red backlight? It seems as if some red light is hitting him from the back so just curious.

Been a while since visiting, but you have been doing a nice job with your creatures. Very creepy and chaotic. The color choices are good and add to the effect of goriness.
The last one is turning out nicely. I know it is still a WIP, but right now if I squint my eyes, almost all the pic is reddish except for the lower right corner. I am not an expert in color but maybe this causes a big separation of the elements. Maybe it will help if the transition from red to green was smoother or having some other spots of green around the piece. Then again, I don't know too much about color theory so take this suggestion with a lot of salt :P

I enjoy seeinng you pushing your works to the best results possible lurking in them.
Kind of an perfectionism and a proof of endurance. Which I think is quite important. And unfortunately too many artists (me amongth't them) are lacking such qualities.
I remember how a very good teacher once made me redo a painting for like 6 times. I hated it but each time discovered sth. new too.
Like when reading a good book.
Hypotheticaly an artist could vary the same simple motive like a stillive of 2bottles and an Apple for the rest of his life and still be able to express anything there is, I think.
Last one's my favourite. Am too drunk right now for any crits, sry :)
Take care.

Good job on Space ghost, I really like your straights. Its a good style choice. It reminds me a lot of Sam Keith, I bet you are a fan of "The Maxx".

Awesome art style. It's so stylized, yet you can feel your characters are based in reality; it's really great. I also like the slight change of direction you've had recently, it takes your art leaps and bounds ahead of the first few pages.

Very much looking forward to another update :).

Amazing stuff! Love the sheer volume and weight you get with all your characters, reminds me a lot of Simon Bisley crossed with Ralph Steadman. A pretty evil combination.

Loving the dark figures and the power they have, you have a great sense of colour and presence [if that's the right word].

September 7th, 2008, 08:04 AM
Dood! Nice stuff! Love the gritty feel you got in your work! The Minotaur has got to be my favourite of the bunch here. The viking looks cool as well, but I read the thigh as my main area of interest... I'm thinking it's because it's the largest mass that's in direct light. Mind you, I'm sitting on my laptop which is far from correctly adjusted... hehe...

Hope you're well man! Long time no chat!

Hey! I like your style alot. It sort of reminds me of Simon Bisley's work with the 2000AD comics. I like what you did with the pic in post #100, but I felt that something was missing, like a darker background and a light sourse behind the guy for that silhouette effect around his face. The blood dripping out from his mouth would look so much better. But eh, you're already finished with it and it still looks badass.

September 12th, 2008, 11:12 AM
Damn dude, this latest entry is very strong! Has some great depth to it. Wonderful use of shape as well, and I love your brushstrokes especially little accent lines like those light lines hinting at the contour of the furthest leg.

Frazzetta!!! Cool, dark and moody
The almost symmetric classic pose is a very good example of a frazzetta`s scene. But for me the tiger face could be more aggressive. It is a little relaxed or too chill. Now looks more like a Prince Adan`s pussy cat than a real Battle-cat (remember He-man! lol)

TheJester
September 12th, 2008, 01:02 PM
Great sketches dude!!!!

The way you distort anatomy is very effective! And although you characters are siiiiick, they have something very realistic about their look. Some of this stuff is copied for refference!!!!

Good work!!!! keep up! :ninja:
