File size on a video is a function of frame rate, length, dimensions, and compression scheme. The particular program you use to edit your video is irrelevant.
I have seen people do some lovely stuff in i-movie. Personally, I use Premiere. It really does not matter. To make yourself happy, find the most robust feature set you can in the price range you are willing to spend.

Recording: Camstudio, free.
Editing: Virtual Dub Mod, free - just takes some elbow grease.

i never thought of just movie maker .lol since im on windows.
I just have 25 various saves of a painting and wanted to string it in to a movie format. and i think movie maker should work, the coolest ones i have seen are the ones where it "almost" looks like its timelaps photography.
many thanks for the help and advice, folks :)

If they are just images you want to string together - you could simply make an animated gif with imageready.

Keep in mind that with an animated gif you'd be limited to 256 colours tops. So unless you know your GIFs, stick to a movie.
For example, I did this blurb based on Andrew's self portraits (http://www.artbyaline.com/forum/AndroidSPODtest186f_mpg4_15fps.avi) as a test. Because each portrait has largely different colours from the others, it was necessary to make a movie out of it. Otherwise, it would looks like one hella specky (even diffuse) mess.
Anyhow, at what kind of speed do you want your saves to be on screen? Do you need them to cross blend? What should be the overal lengh of your movie?
All these might determine if you would need something more advanced or if you can do with Movie Maker... or need Camtasia in the future.
