View Full Version : Trouble finding a mentor?

Seedling
October 11th, 2007, 03:54 PM
I’m guessing more than a few people here have been unable to find mentors. I have an idea that could help you fill your time until you do get a mentor. What do you think about this:

I could run a classroom like stevekim’s in which I would announce a weekly sketchbook assignment. There would be a lot less one-on-one time than in a mentorship-thingy; but you would be free to join in or drop out at your whim. I would most likely use the assignments already posted in Concept Art 101, and I would give critiques on the assignments turned in each week (assuming I’m not mobbed with gobs and gobs of assignments!)

If you would be interested, please post here to let me know.

Disclaimer: it will likely be at least a month before I could get this started.

Cheers!

I'm interested. I've been checking the thread since the first page since it begun and posted to most of the mentors without any result.

If you want any presentation or info about us interested mentees just reply or pm!

I don't mind waiting a month, since that's what it's going to take until I get my hands on a proper scanner.

Thanks for taking the time to try to set this up!

.cheers

I could do that in the mean time, it'd be nice if I could get a mentor but I'll get help regardless. Thanks for setting this up.

Better not thank me until this becomes a sure thing. ;)

This means I have a month to replace or fix my home computer, which crapped out recently. :P

I would be willing to participate, if my extremely low amount of skill could handle them. Although I might not always post the results, I would at least be grateful to you for creating the oppurtunity. I'm sure plenty of others would be as well. :)

No worries! If I do this, it'll be "come as you are" - by which I mean it doesn't matter if you're starting all the way at the beginning. But if you are shy, or want something to do right away, you are welcome to try the Concept Art 101 assignments on your own. There is a link in my sig to them.

Cheers!

You guys should really consider sending out a gazillion PM's...I mean theres a lot of people in here with plenty of talent to spread around.
I cannot express this enough; READ THE POSTS please read them...for your own good. Even if they are not on the list of Mentors, if you come accross someone whos artwork inspires you to improve...SEND A PM!!

Seedling, that is a really good idea. Hopefully you can help out some bodies.

Thank you Chaos! I’ve got to finish my 100 critters or die trying before I can think seriously about this. ;)

Drivebybaptism – lol, your handle gives me giggles. All the advice on the games industry you can eat can be found in the “games industry” link in my sig. Enjoy!

For anyone else needing something to do while waiting for a mentor, I just posted something new that could help you make good use of your time: Perspective 101 ( http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1485584#post1485584)!

You have some excellent classrooms going. Thanks a lot ^^

I'll join as many as possible. It's time I stopped hating my art and did something about it.

I've lurked here for a while now and read the boards close to daily. I'm a 37 year old-wannabe artist who finally decided to do something about that doodling fixation I've had since a kid. Enrolled in community college for art and am looking forward to your class Seedling. Hopefully you don't mind a beginner.

Thanks Chaos! I’ll do that!

Badger – beginners will absolutely be welcome! :)

My home computer problems have been solved. Now I just need to finish the 100-creature project before I’ll be ready to dive into this. Thanks everyone for letting me know you are interested!

I think that's a phenomenal idea! I've been having difficulty finding a mentor, and I happen to think that you rock. : D Also, doing weekly assignments would be incredibly beneficial. You've got my vote!

I'll throw my hat in the ring as well Seedling. I look forward to whatever you end up setting up. Glad to hear your computer woes resolved themselves.

LoL, I'm game to join in on this... You were actually the one to inspire me to really want to push into being an environmental arteest :)
Anyway, hopefully this will pull through and I'll make my best attempt to balance my college/real life with these assignments. Until more info is given, I'll be lurking here and in form's class lol :P

Hey Seedling, thanks for setting this up. :)

I'd be interested in joining, but I think I'm going to wait and see exactly what you've got planned first. I'm really really new to digital painting and art in general, so if it's all beyond me I'd rather stick to simple studies and the like for now. :P

(Actually my first post this - been lurking around and reading for a while!)

Great idea Seedling! Especially for me because I'd like to be mentored but I'm afraid I wouldn't do my assignments on time... I have scanner and computer access only on weekends.

This would be really useful :)

Amazing, just what I needed. I'm trying to improve and wanted to take courses, but between family life and work, it's hard to find as many hours and money to afford lessons.

Okay, this looks like it's gonna get some action. Thank you, my beautiful Chaos, for playing house-sitter for the hoard. Seedling's tied up till the end of the month and I'm in just about the same boat, so I'd like to ask everyone to be patient for a short time. We still have to work out between us what we're going to be doing, and then we'll get things moving. One thing that might be productive while we get geared up is to take a look through the mentoring threads that are up and running. A lot of nice info is going up and you might pick up some tips while you wait.

Thank you all for your interest, and we'll do our best to make this a bit of fun for everyone.

Okay... My first suggestion of having you all do a perfect map of the cosmos with the entire history of civilization depicted as constellations in full color overlaid on it has been shot down as...maybe...a...bit...overreaching...so... I'll be back with something more appropriate.

Damn women...picky picky picky...:P

If raw beginners are still welcome, I'd really like to be involved. I've already begun on the assignments in Concept Art 101, so it would be nice to get some feedback.
