this show has 3 categories.
1. spoken presentations/demonstrations with experts in each area covered
2. hands on instruction (when the instructors are working directly with the students.
3. pure demonstration (this will be a special portion of the event as there will be more artists simultaneously demonstrating where you can see them all working, than ever before.)
It is a mixture of structure and creative chaos. It is inspiration and motivation. It is focused on foundations but has all the info needed for artists of all levels to take away more than they hoped to.
The rest is a surprise.

I think that would be a safe assumption due to the various threads referring to the workshop as such.

This sounds like an amazing experience, not just a place to learn new techniques , but an opportunity to pick brains develop and be influenced directly by some amazing artists. Whats really superb is that there are so many different styles, ideas and approaches represented, it really gives the student a chance to sort of cherry pick what it is that they are inspired by in each artist, its this a la cart approach that really helps to define an individuals personal voice, which can sometimes be overwhelmed when a student studies with only one instructor. You ConceptArt creators are some smart bastards. Cheers!

that's what the airplane is for...we have plenty of younger students at the events and seattle has some of the best public transportation in the country. but alas...there is always next year or the year after. Though a lineup like this will probably never happen again, considering it never happened before either.

Yeah, that is part of the point. People will have the opportunity to make decisions about who they want influencing their work, which is rarely the option at work or in school. That being said, sometimes it is those who you least expect who provide the breakthrough that you never saw coming. I can say, that due to the structure of the event, it will be possible to at least peek at and see all the instructors working so you can make that decision.
We have three tracks and two categories currently. The categories are Art and Design.
Spoken Demonstration/Presentation - For example, Lorne Lanning is doing a wonderful talk on creativity. Considering he has led perhaps one of the most creative companies in the industry for the past decade, it should be a good one). Coro, Dan Milligan, Android, Marko, and many others will be speaking, of course. The spoken program will be announced in a couple weeks. Stay tuned. A few of these talks will be lecture based, but all will have plenty of digital imagery or demonstrations happening to keep things exciting. Those who learn by being told and shown will have the opportunity to do so.
Pure Demonstration - Participants will watch the pros as they are focused purely on the work. Ask occasional questions...but the point of this is to let the instructors focus on what they do best...create. It will be up to the students to analyze and deconstruct the methods for some of these demonstrations (Noxizmad, for example who says more with his brush than any words he could say, ever would). Those who learn best by watching, will be able to take advantage of this. Given the intelligence of the attendees from the industry and the student base around here, I expect everyone will get something great out of this.
Hands on instruction. Students will have the option to participate in this portion of the program and recieve hands on assistance from the top professionals in each area of study. We are doing a head drawing class, for example. The instructors will be of both traditional and digital background, so those working on laptops or in sketchbooks will get to have the big guns helping them hit the targets. Personally, I always learned best in this way, which is why we are including this portion for the event. We are accommodating all 3 ways people learn art and design. Seeing, hearing, and doing...
This is going to be our most organized event to date but even the organization is structured to allow for the creative chaos that makes these events special. How things are structured is a surprise. It is a new and highly evolved approach, that much I can say. It is going to be friggen intense.

gdc??? no offense to gdc, as its the best business event in the states, but seriously, on an artistic level, it is a void that is months away. That is the whole purpose of our event...the industry needs a big wakeup call creatively. We are here to help shake em all outta bed...and that includes me.
TIME TO GET UP!!!! ...at least thats what my lil sis used to say!
There currently is the option to pay at the door, however, that is only because we have not sold out yet. Given the quality of instructor list, and the limited space, I imagine it will be sold out around xmas.

will there be a european workshop? i think it will be worth it. i think alot of artists at CA are from europe, so plz, organize a workshop in europe!
Jason Manley
October 20th, 2007, 02:25 PM
There are no European Workshops planned for 2008. Due to the current issues with Dollar to Euro/Pound conversion, it looks like it will be 2-3 years before we consider doing another there. For Europeans wanting to visit the states, there has never been a better time to do so. Your money is worth almost twice what it should be here and will stretch a long way, making this just as, if not more affordable, than if we do one in Europe.
Noe, sorry to hear about that. Maybe in a few years we will be closer. If your bf has not bought the tix yet, then perhaps he can be "convinced" Seattle is the better choice for locations. hehe
Jason
Noë
October 20th, 2007, 03:24 PM
About the affordable issue: yes the euro is worth more dollars, but since an airplane ticket from the Netherlands to Italy (for example) is approximately 50 euros and one to seattle approximately 450 I think going to a European workshop will be cheaper for Europeans.
But it doesn't matter really :) people from all around the world come to the workshops, and for a good reason ^^
I'm just gonna save some money and try to get better at drawing and painting for the next one..
@ Jason; yes, I thought about that but the tickets were already bought. :scribble:

I'm totally stoaked about this, it's definitely a workshop I'm going to attend. I've never been to the states and I'm in a solid job, there's no reason for me not to come to this.
I have a few questions regarding places to stay, how expensive is the living costs in Seattle? I'm looking to stay there for a week in some kind of hostel or should I aim for a cheap one roomer instead?
Thanks again MB and Jason, you guys rawk!

i got a question..... when is the workshop starting on friday? like what time period...
Jason Manley
October 30th, 2007, 11:12 PM
they usually start around ten or ten thirty in the morning. I am working on the schedule now. However the following day is a noon start time since the Friday party keeps people out late. Sunday is also around a noon start time. Monday is back to early again...ten. That is my current estimation.

The Man(ley) said so, end of story apparently.
My guess is artwork related to current unreleased IPs will be some of the focus in the presentations/lectures and therefore they dont want video floating around of those.
I too am bummed about this, but it is what it is.
Mr. Manley has been very clear there will be no video taping.

I have a general question... if you don't have a full portfolio to show will it still benefit you to bring a group of sketchbook pieces and other misc. work? I know having a s.b. is always good to show for feedback but I wasn't sure if it would be worth showing at the portfolio review to find work and make contacts with companies.

I regret not just being out going and meeting people. I talked a lot with Brom and Andrew Jones which was good but I had a 2 sentence conversation with Jason Manley and only a one sentence conversation with Davi. I asked a lot of questions at Todd Lockwood's demo but I didn't actually meet and talk with Todd which I regret because he's had a profound influence on my art and my life. I also saw Justin Oaksford like everywhere I went but I didn't even say a word to him. I would have liked to have talked with him a bit and thank him for everything. I guess next time I'll try to be less shy and meet more people.
Thanks everyone for the AMAZING experience, I really hope I can make it to the next one!!!

I regret not just being out going and meeting people. etc.
I know, I felt the same way! I dunno, I kept thinking like "these people are so far ahead of me, and they can't learn anything from me so why talk to me?". Being a kid at these things is tough, but luckily The Black Frog didn't mind having me hover over him and bug him every step of the way.
I was really looking forward to seeing Marko, he was the reason I came. But really, if he had come I would have never met TBF and would have never learned as much as I did, so I'm thankful for that. Next time us youngin's need to stick together and attack shyness as a whole to get more done :P

Shouts to all y'all, especially my roommates,
Nate, John, Jason, Kiel, Pryia, Jewl, Wombat- every one of you that met us at the Hurricane to create that atmosphere we love- and a super special thanks to the crew of the Hurricane for putting up with our shit for over a week STRAIGHT, Davi for doing the admin thing and collecting the cash for the bill, every single one of you that showed me your sketchbook and offered me the same courtesy, all the comments and suggestions and crits, all the inspiration and knowledge floating between us, it was truly an amazing environment. Another special thanks to all the instructors who, despite being weary of the same questions, would not deny even the most petty (here's to you, Mr. Konig).
Montreal was a great place to learn to break ice, which made this workshop even more potent for me. I couldn't stop shaking hands, swapping cards, or passing sketchbook collabs around. The instructors were even more approachable than in Montreal, and knowledge just vomitted from their tongues. I have no regrets this time around- I feel I truly made the most of this workshop that I possibly could. The fourth day was the sealer though. I finally heard what I needed to hear and finally felt a wonderful gratification and vindication. Thanks Dan for the drawings and letting me use your Sawhorse as well as helping all the artists- same goes for you, Greg Manchess- observing you and Dan collaborating and teaching was intense. Thanks to Ian on the Second day for doing a great modelling job while we waited for Hussar's model to set up. You rocked that chair, dude. Thanks to Phil Holland for just being the all around coolest guy in the world. Musician, artist, photographer- and now seamstress. Thanks to Coro for the word Fuck, Nox for the Kaosillator, Jason Chan for the tentacle rape, Dobsky for not hating my guts, The lady at the deli for delivering tasty sandwiches in a timely manner (For the most part). There are really too many thanks to go around, but to every person I traded words with, I owe you so much. Jason said on the last day "How many of you are going to cry when this is over?" Jokingly I raised my hand- but when I had to say goodbye to my wonderful roommates, I can't deny I was choking up. I hope it isn't too long before I get to enjoy all of you guys' company again. I won't soon forget the Hurricane, or the Gasworks park, or John falling asleep standing up, Dan Milligan's great performances, Coro's inspirational advice, Jason's encouragement, Walking to Queen's Anne to find a closed Gallery, the party at the space needle- I don't think it will be possible to top this workshop. Until you hold one in space Jason, I think you've set the bar pretty fuckin' high.
Thanks.
(And for all those behind the scenes- I can't remember all the names, but everyone who was helping out, the film crew, Jessica and Melissa and of course Monster, and anyone else who I possibly could have forgotten, thank you.)
And an unbelievably huge thanks to Peter Pan (Firemoth) for being the most generous, helpful person I have met in my life.

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS!
Definitely the best workshop ever. I've loved every workshop I've been to, but always came away with a few complaints each time. This time I really can't think of a thing that went wrong, except maybe the weather (and even that was pretty mild compared to some previous workshops). The venue was great and the technical difficulties were minimal. You guys really hit the perfect balance between putting on a good show and creating an environment conducive to learning and socializing this time.
Great job to everyone who put it together, and all the volunteers who helped out.

Hi there,
I really enjoyed the workshop. A full success imho.
Thanks to:
Carl Dobsky for his help concerning the palette order,
Gregory Manchess for his friendly advice and tips,
BROM for kind talks, his funny speech and his help offering,
Daniel Zetterström for the photos and his laptop,
Eric fom Ravensoft for the cool chat,
Peter König for turning me into a zombie,
Lotus for the fashion tips,
Shawn Barber for letting me have a million peeks over his shoulder (helped me a lot).
Furthermore, greetings to:
Paul, Michelle (too bad we didn't meet earlier!), Ian (and his 2 buddies, Zack and... errr... sorry... ), Eric Son, Jason Felix (all the best wishes for your artbook!), Michael Bierek (great portfolio, man!), Tobi, Massive Black crew, Oblio, Marko & Jelena & everyone I forgot to mention (sorry!)
One last thing to mention:
Coro's "Devourer Of Dreams" outmatches all other thunderdome pics by far, which unfortunaleley depicted mostly devourers of humans, heads or brains (no matter how skillfully crafted). But I prefer the striking idea of his pic to the drama or beauty of the other motifs. Just wanted to spend him a well-deserved applause.

Hey Everyone!!!
This was my first workshop and it was AMAZING!!! So much talent in what felt like such little time! It has always been an honor working for MassiveBlack and ConceptArt.Org, but this just blew me away!
Can't wait till the next one!!! Thank you so much!!! And good luck to all the attendees I had the pleasure of meeting!!!

No better way to start off a new year. I'm still exhausted from such an enlightened experience. The energy at this workshop was spot on. Everyone was very friendly and open making it a very chill and laid back experience. Big thanks for everyone showing up and making it one hell of an event. It really feels like a dream one would have and wish to have experienced, but I did!! I walked away from Revelations changed for the better! This was my second workshop, first one being Insomania, and it doesn't even compare to Revelations.
Big thanks to everyone who showed up, the professionals who showed up to the event with their busy schedules. Definitely recovering from it all still.

i'm just getting over the jetlag and a serious case of the flu, so i want to appologize for the belated response but i just wanted to thank everyone for everything they did, everyone who had anything to do with holding that event, it was truly life changing, the most inspiring thing i've ever had anything to do with. you guys said a lot of things that changed my life, changed the way i see and do things. thanks again, looking forward to the next workshop in the states...
