[ Poor dragon. :dad: ]
[ Oh, well. ]
[ Let's see what's inside this thing! :P ]
[ ...Now, if you're not into the brain thing, and prefer to show some other aspect of the beast's autopsy, then by all means feel free to do so. ]

great stuff so far, gang!
I've never posted DSG before, and it kinda sucks that i decide that my first post is this quick scribble, but I'm getting ready to leave for work, and this is all i got so far. 20 minutes of one brush, one color. maybe i'll post a finished version xP Hopefully my idea inspires someone else!

That makes two of us, Tommoy.
Will be adding crits tomorrow, can't keep my eyes open at the moment...
Think I've made it too messy/dark again..

Anthis, i like the scale of your dragon. It's so proper dragon size. and the sulfur breath is also very cool. the clean, gray, flat floor makes me think that they are somewhere in a large warehouse, but the obscure backdrop hints outside? mountains? sky? something?
tommoy, another proper dragon size :). and i like the details you put. scales! scales! woot.

I am sincerely sorry that this is a rough pencil sketch, but it appears that my photoshop does not want to open this morning, so I am not able to finish the piece yet!

The crits as promised.
Stilgar; I see what's going on, but I think the dragon could use some detail. Nice idea to have him use machinery for the autopsy, and having the dragon so close to the viewer. Everything seems tilted to the right a bit, watch the perspective ;).
senanimach9; Pretty sinister, nice mood. Think the scientist is lacking some structure around his neck.
Psychostrat; Really makes you think you're the scientist who has just taken out the brain, looking at how small it is. Not quite sure whether the dragon's head is tilted a little or not, some parts seem front-viewed, but we can't see the right eye. See if you can play a bit with the depth too, many elements seem to be on the same plane, judging from the rendering.
marsc; Nice costume design. Interesting use of colors too, it works well for the mood. Downside is you don't seem to have a real light source, and the black bg gets in the way at some points.
Thanks for the crit btw, I was really aiming for a huge dragon. As for the background; I really had no clue. Changed my mind several times, and resorted to some kind of big laboratorium hall in the end. Always a good lesson.. think about the environment ;/
Aquila; Welcome! good start, although unfinished. Nice to have the head tied up, connected to all kinds of machinery. Doesn't look like it would hold though :)
Tommoy; Very narrative, loads of character in the scientist and dragon. Interesting design on the chair-thing too. Think the dragon's body looks a little flat compared to the head. Perhaps because its a side view.
GoMegaX; Nasty. I like the details, like the lab journal, sink, instruments. Nice viewpoint too. Not quite sure what's going on in the back, and what's that around the scientist's mouth.
Riala; See if you can get some depth in the head and the piece in general. Of course, its fairly unfinished so a bit hard to crit yet. Nice to see you're working on the lab-stuff.
aszantu; Whew, he wasn't quite dead yet. Nice expression. The skin looks a bit too spotted to look like scales. Also think about having a consistent light source. Ah well, perhaps its just not refined yet.
Hope you don't mind, these were some thoughts. Correct me if I'm wrong :).

I assumed the researcher wasn't the most cleanliest person in the world, the marks on his cheek are bloody fingerprints as if he held his face in thought at some point. The background is just some room where the light (at the top) was supposed to be illuminating just enough. (The light looks a lot better on the real drawing but scanners...)

Anthis,
Thanks for feedback :]!!
i draw on paintchat for dsg, so i tend to be inky. but you nailed it, light source and general lighting is one of my many weak points. will continue to learn how to properly tackle lighting issues...

Thanks for the crits Anthis, Yeah the head is tilted a little, maybe the left eye is showing to much, most of the parts are front viewed. The depth is something I did have trouble with, do have a blurry background version lol... I'm not to happy with it, wanted to be more dark and archaic, but ended up with a silly pic lol...
Your picture would be in my top two along with GRETCHEN, I like both styles, it has the dark and archaic feel and they don't have to be too detailed..... makes me want to do this one all over again :)...

burrito my favourite so far. your pic made me laugh in an evil way.
Ryoken you pushed the angles very well.
GRETCHEN great color, a few details missing on the how and why but that doesn't matter.
Tommoy strong overall finish, love the look in the dragons eye, like "oh no not again".
GoMegaX I like the idea and attention to detail. I hate your shading, it does nothing for the picture. Try using cross hatches to match your style.
Riala welcome. just keep on drawing and watch the strong people like dan and burrito

Wingstar: Good start. However, there are a couple things you could do to really improve this piece.
First, keep in mind that all creatures (and humans for that matter!) have an underlying structure. Study and use those anatomical reference points to make creatures more believable.
Second, study perspective and "ground" your piece. The door and tables look like they are floating. Add some flooring to bring another dimension to make it more realistic. Work with vanishing points so you can correctly add depth to your work. Utilize rulers and templates if you have to! Have fun!
Don't know if this will help, especially coming from me with my work, but do those things and watch how quickly your stuff improves!
P.S. Thanks for the crits Anthis! Much appreciated!

Riala; Probably removed and linked because its unfinished. Should check the rules thread, think its explained there.
GoMegaX; I see, fingerprints indeed. Gotta say I hate doing backgrounds in pencils btw.
Mitze; Thanks! Original take on the scientist checking out the brain. Nice lab tech clutter too. Like the rendering on the head, but I think the part between the eyes and nose is straightened out a bit too much. Seems rather stiff for something organic. Saying you have an art block?
marsc; Don't know paintchat to be honest, is that actually decent for this use? I've heard working in grayscale can help you with values. Should give that a try, goes for me aswell btw.
Psychostrat; About the depth; not sure how to fix that. You probably want your focus on the dragon? I don't think simply blurring will make the bg look more distant. Its the detail and saturation and such aswell. Saw a pretty good tutorial on that not too long ago, but can't seem to find it right now.
Stilgar; Anytime, see you next round :P

I love Ryoken's stuff all the time (especially the "Poly-Gel Riders" piece)
But I gotta give it to Burrito on this one (so far)..
The "What?" look on the man's face is priceless, and it's
an overall great idea...... haha
Great work you guys, keep it up. :)

People generally comment on things they like. If you want comments, don't post here. My advice, work on small thumbnail sketches using black only. Your colors are not helping you atm.

shrew11 - Wow, I'm flattered. Thanks
nightblue - welcome to DSG! My beef with your post is there's no real apparent way to tell it's a dragon... otherwise it's well done.

Anthis,
paintchat is a web java application where ppl chat and draw together on real time. is also fun. the tools are basic, but i get the hang of using it a lot for DSG for the instant feedbacks i can get from the other drawers.
will give grayscale a go and see if it will help with my understanding of values. thanks again, too :]
