A thread in which I will post my assignments by J.L. Alfaro. Hopefully some progress will be visible along the way! :xpld:

Alright bud, cant wait to see your progress!

I'm going to post that pm info I sent you so that anyone else following along can see where your assignments are coming from.

1. Done. Thread started.
2. Download this PDF (http://storeandserve.com/download/825227/Christopher_Hart_-_Drawing_Cutting_Edge_Anatomy_%28The_Ultimate_Guid e_For_Comic_Book_Artists_%29.pdf.html)- go to page 14 and look at the simplified forms that make up the body. I want you to play around with that a bit. Draw what you see there, following the simplified forms style. After you get done drawing them...
3. I want you to look for some full body photos of people (standing, relaxing and in action) on google and draw them out in this simplified style.
For the meantime, lets put muscle anatomy on the back burner.
4. Once you got the forms down, I want you to download this Human Proportions (http://rapidshare.com/files/61369512/Human-Proportions.pdf.html) and practice that a few times. Again, dont worry too much about the muscle anatomy right now, draw out the proportion illustrations using your simplified forms, and just connect them all. Make sure you pay close attention to where the head measurements land (eg. the chin, nipples, belly button, crotch, mid thigh, knee, ankle-foot) and memorize them. Post this in your progress thread and I will check them out as I see them posted.

Okay, so,.. I've done a couple of drawings now, here they are.

and then Task nr. 3, I've only done one, but I'll do some more, right away.

Here's some more...

and

I had a little troublewith the, um, foreshortening though (or whatever it's called).

looking good man!
one thing to keep in mind for the following studies, you can fit more than one per page :)

The focus should be on the basic shapes that make up the body. dont worry about the foreshortening for now, perspective is next.

Okay, here's two more poses. After these I'll work on the proportions. I think I have the simplified forms down. I've been checking in these poses I've made so far wether they are proportionally correct and I think I haven't done a bad job with them.

Here they come. Human Proportions,.. something seems off though. Maybe I just failed to get the proportions right... Anyways, here they are.

Good start man,
a few things:
Make sure you do a simple line chart to keep your proportions correct. See the one I attached. Measure one head, and then make 7 more equal portions on your paper. To do this, I usually use a ruler and my HB pencil-that way I can easily erase any leftover lines in the end. I also try to keep my heads 1 inch in height to make it easier when I measure. Make a straight vertical line in the middle of your head measurements and that will represent the vertical middle of the body. Having these measurements done, it will be easier and less frustrating for you to practice those pesky proportions. Sooner than later (but not now) you wont need those lines, and it will be better to just draw without them.

On your drawings, I want you to evolve the basic figures now (see figure 1) like so. Notice I didnt add muscle detail or any shading; I simply connected the basic body shapes together. from now on, when you start to draw a figure, do the basic body shapes very lightly, until you are happy with your mannequin (thats what those are called). Once you like your mannequin's pose and proportion...then you can connect the mannequins' shapes together like figure 1.

for the next few studies, I want you to concentrate in memorizing those proportions. And I want to see that chart in your drawings, run the lines across the page and make a couple per page, more if you can fit them in. Make notes on the sketches as you notice things I havent told you about (hand proportion as it relates to the "head measurement" etc.). But dont worry if you dont see anything as of yet.

On figure 3, I have overlaid your study to the head chart, to show you just how off you were. Not bad, not off by much. That could only mean that using that ruler will help you a great deal.

Practice: Proportions; front, back, side views of both male and female.
I would like to see at least 2 of each.

My scanner was always "enhancing" the scan which made some lines disappear or partially disappear. So, I just took the time to go over those lines to make them come out more. Either way, I've now turned off this sharpening button and I like the result much better. Another proportions study:

More to come really soon.

yes...yes...young padawan Im really liking what I see, keep those studies rolling.

I dont see the mannequin lines, did you erase them completely or did you skip them?
tisk, tisk, no skipping the mannequins Myrridin!
reason being, that as you get more in tune with the human anatomy, those mannequins will turn into basic skeletons which will in turn help you create realistic people.

Err, I forgot. I drew that first one in school and then I just stopped thinking about it in the second one! I'll do a couple more tonight after I'm done with my homework and I'll try to do some tomorrow in class as well. Can I draw different poses while holding those proportions into account? Or is that what I'm supposed to do? Rather then these, well, stiff-like mannequins?

Your young padawan~

You can draw out a couple of poses, but to get the proportions correctly you have to nail them in the standard pose.
I know it gets boring but it needs to be done.
sketch and doodle some other stuff for fun, try drawing some of your favorite movie stars...and then get back to drawing your proportions.

Some more studies. I'll probably do some arm studies after these, but after those I'll get straight back to proportions :p

Looking very good Merlin, (you dont mind me calling you that do you)
your muscle studies are coming along very nice.
Aside from these pencil rendered studies, make sure that you make some drawings with the muscular structure outlined. Try pen and ink.
you need the side view, and inside of the arm as well.

keep at it bud.

Another arm ;) I didn't use a ref this time, but it's sort of in the same position as one of the arms in the batch a few posts back. I hope it doesn't suck.

good work man,

The hand is twisted a bit too much in on the first one, that looks painful. Also the fore arm is abit off. another study of the same one should do.
