There is a cool book I highly recomend if you really want to get into digital painting. The book is called digital character design and painting by Don Seegmiller. It even has stuff on character design process. Most of the digital painting is done in "Painter" but I found that using photoshop and painter combined has helped. Amazon has it at a decent price. Good Luck!
