1st - GunTrouver
2nd - Hopsy
3rd - Juan Caruso
Comments:
GunTrouver - Very unique and interesting style. Looks like how I picture hyenas in my head; dirty, mangy and a little sinister. The only real crit is that the tail seems a little like an afterthought.
Camara - This is one beat up old hyena! I love how it looks, but could easily be confused for an old dog. Very cartoony though, nice work.
Einen - Amusing and evil at the same time. Beautiful feel to the whole image, but the lighting around the fur and head is awesome. The crazy bulging eye is nice, but the earring and eyebrow dots are a little over the top for my taste. Still, this painting rocks!
HFix - I liked seeing all the work you put into getting this hyena done. I think you should have used a hard edge brush for the shading though. Right now, he's got sharp line edges all over, but the shading looks soft and out of focus. Also, keep in mind that he's in the shadow of that big tree and won't have too many highlights on his body. The earrings are a nice homage to Einen:)
Paweu - Your hyena looks really good! I like how you handled the fur a whole lot...and he looks dangerous, laughing and staring at the same time. His paws look a bit like hooves though. It'd be great to see him dropped into a simple scene rather than the hahahah background, but overall it's very nice!
Chate Noire - Such a clean polished style! The end result is beautifully done, but doesn't make me think of a hyena. It makes me laugh though because he's so ridiculouslly prim and proper! Great work on bringing the personality to life:)
gnahz - Yours could be taken as a dog too with the body shape. The facial expression though is a nice one, and I do like the colours and liveliness you've put in your painting.
chennai-creature - The pink lips and gums on your guy freaks me out! It does add to the electric feel going on though. I think the mouth and teeth might be too exaggerated, but you can't mistake him for anything but a hyena!
llothcat - Crazy eyes! The highlights and dark circles sort of look hypnotic. I think that it would make a really nice looking paper cut-out style puppet, with the articulated joints and all that but despite the many levels of pieces to him, it still geels kind of flat without stronger lighting.
daveneale - Always experimenting with how far you can push your stuff eh? I like how insanely exaggerated your style is in this piece, but as mentioned before, he does bear a resemblance to one Ren Hoek. Good to see such an EXTREMELY stylized entry though.
Hopsy - Your entry this month is beautiful! The inquisitive eyes grab me right away. Not much to say, this is really great looking stuff!
tolgatanyel - The face on your hyena reminds me a lot of my uncle trying to sell one of his corny jokes! I like the overall style, but the ears are too round and bear-like. Nice touches on the face for sure though.
Juan Caruso - Another priceless face! I like the flow to your hyena; great pose and personality to him as in your crocodile from last month.
28thwing - I really like the lighting on this! The mane is well done, but the rest of him looks too smooth/furless. The snout and paws look a little long too. The more I look at him, the more I think he's a were-hyna, heh!
Asita - Really nice work, simple and clean. I do think that if he was surrounded by angry beasts that his expression would be a little more pannicked though. Nice work nonetheless!
cakeypigdog - I really am liking the colours and style. The huge head makes him a good caricature of a hyena, nicely done as well.

ok i go for
1- Einen - nice character and well illustrated
2-DaveNeale - crazy shapes!! you really pushed this one and although it has lost a bit of hyena- ness it is really cool.
3-Juan Caruso - love your hyena (probably the best of the bunch) but i am not as keen on the rendering of the background and the child. I think the creature would be stronger without the child in the image. Really class entry.
Excellent stuff all round. This was a really good round !

GunTrouver - Great pose and facial expression. Reminds me of Beavis & Butthead a little :) Very nice!
Camara - Wow, this one looks really mean! Great work with all the wrinkles. The legs bother me a little, especially the hind ones, they look like he was a poodle. But overall - well done!
Einen - Now that is great picture! I love the details, and the lighting from the moon and from fireflies. And the grin is priceless. Love it!
ScaryPotato - Great picture and amazing job with the lighting. I love the sadows and that lamp looks great!
Hfix - Nice picture! I love the outline of that fellow, very cute and nicely done, but I think brighter colors and harder shadows would look better. And also it seems like the jpeg compression damaged your picture a bit - try to change saving options or maybe use PNG format.
Chate Noire - very lovely picture, nice pose, great look. Not sure if I'd guess it was a hyena though. But really nice.
gnahz - I like your drawing style, always very cute. This one makes me smile too. :)
chennai creature - very nice painting! And very cartoon-networkish, I like it :)
llothcat - cool vector art and very cute smile:) Great job!
daveneale - now that is one stylized animal! Your style is amazing, and the lighting blows me away (and not the first time). That background works well too. The only problem is the "instantly recognizable" part, but you knew the risk.
Hopsy - I see you've made some changes since the wip-thread and you did great - it looks wonderful. Very cute hyena-puppy, and nice idea with the toy reflection.
tolgatanyel - great job with the face, especially with the eyes and nose. Nice clouds too. I don't know what he's looking at, but it sure must be tasty :)
Juan Caruso - you chose to do do my second favorite of your thumbs and the picture turned out great. Damn, I'd like to be able to draw like that someday!
28thwing - great colors and lighting, and the foggy background looks incredible.
Asita - great picture, I think you captured the personality of hyenas. And it's funny too:) I love his face.
cakeypigdog - nice lighting! I really need to learn how to do something like that!
Now the really tough part - the voting. Here goes:

2nd - Einen

Aaaaand, relax…had a damn long day of doodle, 14hr marathon is now over though so time to give a few more comments:):
GunTrouver: I really like the pose-and the hair esp is very nice, I think the outline is a lil thick in parts, and the dark outline round the bones kind of distract the eye, but over-all this was one of my favourite designs.
Camara: that’s a funny lookin hyena…cool wrinkles and nice colours, would have been nice if you’d done a touch more with the background
Scarypotato: cool lighting, really like the spotlight on the mouse. I think the white face may be a touch too white, and the hair looks a lil thick on his back but good stuff
Hfix: he looks confused:P quite expressive, but some of the background looks a little fuzzy, I think some more variation in your lights/darks could add to this
Paweu: laughing hyena then?:) I like the hair on the back, and the spots too, I think the background distracts a little because the colours are so strong
Chate noire: love those bright highlights:P…nice n polished, looks very debonair. Also dig the pastel pallet.
Gnahz: he looks so happy:) I like the dinky cuteness, id be careful with your light-source though, it seems to be coming from all over the place in this one
Chennai creature: cool teeth….theyre my favourite part. I think the extreme colours are a cool idea, but might have been good to have some of it in shade with bits in the light being super bright
Llothcat: funny lil chap…I take it it’s illustrator you rocked for this. I like the orange maine and the hair in general, might have been nice to have a more animated pose
Me: wish I’d had time to do more to it and put a background in
Hopsey: that’s a look right out of an animal welfare poster…super cute. Really like the reflection, the upturned foot looks a lil akward tho
Tolgatanyel: that’s like a hyena Mohawk:P I like the colour mix, but I think it’d have looked reall cool to have that blue reacting more with the hyena where it hit…also the lighting from behind doesn’t fit with the lighting up front, but tis cool nonetheless
28thwing: good to have you back…awesome colours and cool BG…he kind of hints of sonic the hedgehog (I think it’s the eyes), cool stuff as ever
Asita: I really like the character and the expression aaand the pose, I think id have included it in my top 3 if you’d rendered him up a lil more (kind of looks a touch flat at the mo).

1. Juan Caruso - That's probably the most awesome hyena I've ever seen, and it's got buck teeth!
2. cakeypigdog - Simple and wonderful! Love the colors.
3. GunTrouver - The kiddie book-style does it for me, as well as the great character.
There's probably at least 2-3 other entries that could have been in there as well though. Had a really hard time voting.
