This is it so far. suggestions please.

I think the main bit which I'm going to have problems with is the sand dunes and mountains..

It´s not obvious what yer intentions are with the pic. The person with the flag indicates a strong wind, so there should be sand floating in the air in the finished pic, clouding the sight. The sky needs some more detailed colour, depending on the time of the day it is. Where´s the sun anyway? Desert indicates strong sun and so strong shadows.
Is ist rocky or sand? Wooden carts with big wheels are apt to be pretty useless in deep sand. Maybe sleds would do better.
I do like the color schemes of the surface you laid out so far. What do you wanna do or express with the pic?

well, i wanted them to seem like nomads crossing a desert, so ill change the carts to sleds (good idea!).

The sun is supposed to be coming from the top left of the picture.

How would i do a good sandy/wind effect in PS7 then? whenever ive done my paintings so far iv just always used the default hard brush..

would a good contrasting colour for the really deep shadows be purple? I usually have trouble with colours as im partially colour blind. :(

Thanks for your help bbwolf :)

For shadows, sorry, you´ll just have to try.

Fot the flying sand, here´s how I´d do it. Attached scrrenshots cause german Photoship is different from the english version.

1. Create new Layer

2. Make a Selection for the sand

3. Set selection with soft edges

4. Fill with desired sandcolor.

Choose "sprinkle" for filler mode Aprox 15%.

5. Apply a movement blurr.

6. Move the sandlayer to where it suits you best. Play arrround with the opacity.

Hope this helps.
