Well just because you are in school doesn't mean you have to take it seriously ;). Just doodle on your homework and other papers during class. Then when you get home you can develop those ideas further in a skethbook. You can always learn about art online and through books. I am quite sure you can find some great artists on amazon who made some great anatomy books out there and others who have posted great tutorials.

I was in seventh grade, btw. I guess I didn't take it seriously until recently, but in seventh grade I had nothing else to do during the boring classes. :)

Haha pulled off an ok mark in math this last year, grade 11, and I have the sketches to show why :P Every page at the back of every binder all sketches and doodles. Some just shapeless scribbles.

Ohyeah, I've always loved to draw, taken art class each year seriously unlike the "its easy" people. Really when I decided to get into art as an actual career, would be when I found this site from a link at ezboard forums.

i started seriously last november... was the best thing i did. being in school shouldn't stop you from drawing. if you really want it, you'll find time. "MAKE TIME", a wise guy said. i have fifteen classes and i draw on fourteen of them. so there you have it

cheers

"but i never have the time because im still in school"

i'm not sure what school are you going to but, i think most people wish they had the same hours to draw while they were in school

i started thinking seriously about art as a career at um...6 or 7 probably. I did nothing but draw all through school...backs of papers, assignments, tests, my own notebook. Once I got to junior high i started carrying around an extra folder full of looseleaf xerox paper to draw on. I was always getting yelled at or kicked out of class, but to hell with it. I was way more interested in developing my art and character design than i was in math or geography. I agree, make time. stay up late, get up early...whatever you have to do. just draw.

I've always wanted to be an artist growing up... always got praise, but I slacked when I should've practiced. Honestly, being in school is the best thing for you right now if you seriously want to become an artist... you have much more time during school then you ever will afterwards... because then you'll be to busy working in a dead-end job to pay rent and bills and you'll usually be too tired to do anything creative... so PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!

I wish I would've drawn more while in school... I was just too big-headed and didn't think I really needed to.... boy was I wrong, and now since I'm working I draw at night (even if I'm tired) and I barely get any sleep because of it... I do this because I LOVE art.

just scribble ahead while you sit in a boring class.
i did that all the time back in school.

first, the pages were bordered with lots of small sketches. later, i had a section of the page (~2 inches vertical row) reserved for drawing while the rest of it was for school.
in the end, the pages were divided 50 : 50 :)

if anything, it was loads of practise and it taught me to draw fast.

don't let school be too serious to you that it hinders you in your personal and art progress.
i mean, who cares if you learn every day for a fixed number of hours? learn when you need to and learn less when you don't want to. life will grow a bit more serious after school, so use your school time wisely. it's the cheapest practise time you will ever get!

yeah man, being in high school certainly isn't making you have a lack of time to draw. You go to school at 8 in the morning, get home at 3 or so. You have from then until midnight to draw! Draw from life EVERY DAY!!!!! wether it's a still life or a figure drawing from a mirror. Even if you have extracurricular actitives, like football or making out with your grandma, you'll still have plenty of time to come home and draw for a little bit.

and you don't have to EVERY DAY... just as often as you can.
I really really wish I would have started drawing from life when I was in, say, 9th grade; instead of at the end of 12th.
You have much more free time in high school than you do as a working adult, or as a college student; seriously.

but yeah, that's my advice... draw from life as much as you can; but don't go blowin your friends off on friday nights to stay home and draw.

Making out with your grandma? Wow. I hope "Making out" is a hip new term for playing cards with or visiting...

ROFL!!!!!!

If you dont mind reading a bit extra, it helps to keep a chapter ahead in your textbooks so you don't have to pay too much attention in class.

hehe, i didn't have to bring my art supplies with me, since my main tool for writing and sketching was a plain parker ballpoint pen at that time.

my best stuff was done in either english (because i couldn't stand listening to the political correctness shit my teacher was all about) or religious ed.
the latter was fun as hell. no one cared about me drawing and i got good grades by throwing in the occasional discussion element that proved the senselessness of religion or the nonexistense of god :D

that were fun times.

re drawing from life: why bothering with special events to draw from life? when in school, you have a classroom full of people and one clown performing poses for you. ain't that enough ;)

yeah, i didn't mean having to go to life drawing classes or anything (not that that would be a bad thing)... but I meant it in general. I tried drawing teachers as they were up in the front of the classroom... I was too slow though, I didn't know anything about gesture drawing (not that I know that much now).

My art got me a passing grade infrshman spanish class by painting murals on the walls of the class. I guess I knew then it would get me outta trouble. Actually at 7, I knew I wanted to working in comics and meet the actors/actreeses from Star Wars and other movies. Now I get to do that on a regular basis. Whatever you do, do NOT let someone make you think it is a worthless effort. I heard that enough times and now the people that told me that say "I knew you could do it."

Started seriously may 2002, and I didn't draw much this past school year in class... but I plan to change that in a few weeks when I go back :)

I'm 19 now, btw. It's certainly an eye opener to see all the younger artists (who are much better than I) but it makes me work that much harder.

I didn't start seriously until I turned 20. Before then I was kind of lost, it never really struck me to do this thing full-time until I finally discovered how to pull my head out of my ass and do it :D

shit man,, i learned to draw in school.
when they passed out the worksheets i just fliped that bitch over and started sketching.. i held steady a very low grade point average, did a few bouts of summer school and barely graduated because of this but its all paying off now.

I had a habit of drawing teachers for a laugh. It got me into some trouble on occasion but you can get some great practice in if you can get away with it. Actually, my math teacher saw no humor in it at all and I believe that is why he saw to it that I spent a summer in school. (The fact that I sucked at math had nothing to do with it of course ;) )

Practice whenever you can. I bring a sketch book with me everywhere to this day. (School was about 15 years ago) I found a sweet little pocket sketch book and I almost always have that on me... but there is also one in the car, in my office, and a few at home.

been drawing all of my life. Even cost my mom some major bucks becasue I was drawing in public library books when I was 5.

I didn't get serious with it till a few years ago when I was 32 yrs old. It's never too late and never too early.

Been drawing since i could hold a pencil...

Got really serious when i started elementary school, drawing on anything and everything( i had to clean many a desks back in those days).

Went through a ton of phases along the way..from Comics to anime, back to comics(during the Joe Mad[still my hero even though i don't get a chance to see as much output] era) to illustration(just recently got into painting a year ago)..

Went to the High School of Art and Design, and followed by a year at the Joe Kubert School..looking to go back to school soon and get a BFA in Illustration..
