hello everyone. since some of you guys are already done with the first week's easy-mcheesy homework i'll go ahead the second's week homework since it is on a similar vein.

1. do a finished work in the style, format, medium, subject, ref or no ref, etc. representative of what you want to do as an artist. this will be your 'personal work', outside of academic interests. no time limit, no restrictions. just do your best.

remember to label the post containing your homework with 'week2 homework' in bold.

p.s. for the people on the more noobular scale this might be difficult since you are probably in a 'i need to learn to draw first before i do cool stuff' mode. the best advice i got on this topic was from a teacher who said 'you should never wait, never ask for permission' to do the things that interest you. remember the academic stuff is really the easier part. creative decision making is where the real work is and that part will never get better unless you do that stuff!

note: to the majority: don't feel behind or rushed if you haven't finished the first week's homework. i won't be stacking assignments in the future. i'm only doing it this week because the first week's assignment was timed.

i've been looking at everyone's threads and sketchbooks trying to get a handle on what each person's about, which is taking some time.

i'm also thinking about how to go about demonstrations. right now i am leaning towards some online video setup but i'm not sure. thoughts?

cheers,
steve

UPDATE: OCT 1

2. also do a 30 min portrait. parameters much like the first weeks.

3. also please post all homework in the following format: (also repost 1st weeks homework in this format if you want it critted)

make ref and drawing fit in 1280x800 pixels, as that's going to be the video crit size. put the ref on the left and the drawing on the right. if there is no ref for that week's homework then obviously you don't need to worry about that. put your name on the bottom in 18 point arial 50% grey.

here's an example:

Yeah, a video demonstration is the best idea I think. Would be really cool.

If that doesnt work maybe sound only?

I rate video, unless there are some people on slow connections (and if its over 300 MB a week cause my DSL is capped). If not, maybe step by step pics or voice would work.

I'd prefer video, but if it's not convenient for everyone, pictures and written instructions would work too

Video would be fine but I will go with what you decide. About the second assignment I don't really know where to go or what to do. I would like to paint something but I'm just about to start oil's this week. So I don't really know to much about them. So you see my dilemma. Any thoughts?

hmm. i would have it be something you see yourself doing from a year from now, or two years from now, etc. you said 'i would like to paint something'. there you go. go paint something! do what you like.

how do you adjust the size that precisely? What do you use to overlay text? Don't use computer for art so don't have any programs or know how to use any.

egads man you don't have photoshop?

any basic image editor beyond mspaint will let you do it. cheap software like paintshop pro, photoshop elements... or the real deal photoshop... mmm.... maybe one of the other students can do it for u? i dunno.

It's starting to become obvious to me that I'm not really as well setup or proficient as the rest of this group. It is 6 months since I started drawing and I don't really know anything. Most of the people's abilities in this group are already closer to where I want to be. I certainly don't want to slow things down for them as I try to catch up. So I think I might have to bow out. Sorry if this causes any inconveinience. It's not mean't to, quite the opposite in fact. Maybe later, when I'm a little more organised with software and knowledge. Thanks for your time and effort. Good Luck to everyone else. Phil

Steve, I redid homework1 in new format.

Aardvarkphil, I think you should continue unless you have problems to post your homework.

phil the homework posting thing is a very small thing and not something to get upset about. i'm sure we can work something out.

if you bow out now you willl regret it i promise :). the fact that you've just been drawing is why i like you as a student in the first place.
