I agree these are more appropriate for CC.
Also, your host is incredibly slow to load the images. You can attach them directly here, solve the problem, and save yourself some bandwidth.

You have tendency to use pure white for the eyes, which makes them stand out a little too much and the hats are a little too small in the last illustration, I think. Plus, you have paid much more attention to rendering the flesh than the clothes
Something, too, about the depth of shadow which I don't know how to put into words. It's not terrible, but you did ask for crits
Juhani Jokinen
October 3rd, 2007, 08:06 PM
I'd recommend removing that lens flare from the latest painting since some people here have a grudge against lens flares ;D
Seriously though, don't use pure white for highlights and pure black for shadows- it often results in images looking flat and plastic.

quite a collection of pieces you've got here :) I like the variety of content you've got going, and you have some nice ideas in here as well. it definitely seems like you were trying to understand the lighting in this last one, which is definitely good stuff. it feels as though the character and the background are very separate from each other though, and I don't think the dark spot on the wall behind her works well as a shadow. also, I recommend using a bigger brush when you are working; I learned that from numerous people on this site and it certainly helps.
I think the majority of your characters in here are pretty stiff; doing some gestural studies should help give your characters a bit more life. also there are anatomical errors present in a number of spots as was pointed out, so studying anatomy wouldn't hurt either. drawing realistically might not be one of your main goals as an artist, but understanding anatomy helps in understanding the assembly of a character in my opinion. either way keep at it and good luck!

Hey Gris, I don't mean to be a bastard here, but... maybe you should start a sketchbook thread and put these in there. Critique Center category is meant to focus more on ripping one (or a few) piece(s) apart. If you want critiques on these, you might want to create a new thread instead of recycling this one over. Sorry for the kick in the pants.
gris_bouille
November 14th, 2007, 05:57 AM
Oh ok, but how can you take everything and put it in the right section?
Drunken_hand
November 14th, 2007, 06:08 AM
I'm afraid I can't do anything like move this to the sketchbook area, I'm just a lowly catervarii. Just start a new thread in the sketchbook forum and post your stuff again there. From that point on, don't worry about this thread.
Well while I'm here, I really should have given some crits for your work. I would say for the last two that you posted, it looks like you've got some perspective issues going on there. In the homicidal santa/elf pic, I'm guessing you were trying to pass it off as a stylistic piece, but some of the elements feel unintentionally skewed and won't fit on other planes correctly (mainly the nightstand and the bed) - you should draw more attention to the blood and what's going on. Right now the sword and blood don't pop out. I thought it was part of the elf's costume. Only one the second time around I noticed the arm flopping from the bed and the knife. You might also want to put blood on the covers too.
As for the last piece, the angle we're viewing the mountains and the angle that we're viewing the ground markings are different and probably shouldn't exist in the same picture like you've got, without some other distortion going on for everything in between and around.

I try again:

Drunken_hand
November 15th, 2007, 03:38 PM
perspective it better, but it's not the most interesting thing to look at. That long stretch of river is distracting. I guess we're supposed to be looking at that monastery-like set of structures, but my eyes are stuck on that bright streak of milk flowing through the ravine. Tone down the whites on that thing. Furthermore, while water is reflective, it's also transparent, give us an idea of what's under the river.
And it looks like there's almost four sets of the same cloud in the background. If you've put this much work in the rest of the piece, clouds should be cakewalk
Stoat
November 15th, 2007, 04:48 PM
Mmm. Clouds in the last one are definitely five clones of one set (and the same clouds appear at least twice in the drawing above. Pattern cloning really sticks out to me because I did digital photo retouch for a lot of years (and obvious stamp artifacts and tiling are such a problem).
Which isn't a huge problem all by itself -- certainly most observers aren't going to be hypersensitive to stamp marks -- but it speaks to a real difference in rendering style between the sky, the mountains and the people. They don't go together comfortably.
gris_bouille
November 16th, 2007, 09:15 AM
You are right, the clouds are done with a brush of photoshop, I would focus next time.
And the treatment of character is not the same as the background, It was difficult for me to do
MarkWinters
November 16th, 2007, 10:07 AM
My only bit of advice is to learn to draw and paint before you try to fudge things with Photoshop. The ground looks like there was a pattern that you blurred and mush around and I agree with the others and avoid rubber stamping objects unless your REALLY gonna give it a go. I've seen matte painters do some incredible things with it. But at this stage in the game I'd avoid it. Stay away from white as much as possible and you should almost never need to use white as a light source.

Use reference. Drawing from your mind will only get you so far. I know because I tried to get away with never looking at reference. Bad Bad BAd Corspufo. Reference is your friend. Reference doesn't mean tracing or cheat, it means helping you to get it right.

Hey Gris_Bouille,
You're obviously talented.. why stay stuck at a level where you have to second guess anatomy? Think about all of that wasted time.. all those wasted erasers..
Your compositions are interesting, you know how to use color, your characters have life (although many of them need some attention to their EYES.. some of the characters don't really have a look, but just a pair of eyes.. does that make sense??)
Learn the human body inside and out, your drawings will greatly improve.
There's no way around it, but luckily for people who are interested in imporving their artistic technique, anatomy studies are rather fun to do.
Cheers, best of luck and START A SKETCHBOOK ;),

Salut Gris bouille!
Qitsune t'a donné d'excellents conseils!

Just would like to say i enjoyed the sketches and some of the paintings. some people i think are missing the point on your paintings, They have their own style being semi cartoon and semi realism. Imo if you changed the perspective and the anatomy these paintings would loose their identity. (Its like if you copied van gogh's chair, Do you fix the perspective?)
