Tree-bots WIP - help me out

This is my 3rd try at painter 7 & photoshop 5.5 with a mouse (waiting for my tablet...). I can't work out what it needs to make it look decent. more contrast probably, but i have no experience at these programs.

please everyone give me yr opinion on what it needs!

The laser jumping out at me provides a good three dimensional feel to the drawing, but it is begging... just BEGGING for some darker and lighter tones.

The whole piece needs more contrast, like you said. Also, perhaps some more detail lines. Right now it looks very fuzzy.
