Nice drawings. The detail you capture is impressive. I'm also mystified by how you seem to put everything down in one stroke, no sketchy lines, no underdrawing, or anything. Also, I've never seen your stuff before, but your finished stuff is great.

September 22nd, 2007, 08:02 AM
mynameisrichard yea man....this is how I always work.....It helps me loosen up since my finished work is always very clean and tight..so in my sketchbook I go all out.....loose lines..abstracted figures.....just to keep my eye to hand coordination in tact.
Factor Zero I'm glad u're diggin' it ...thanks
funfetus The reason I'm able to put things down in one stroke is becasue I'm allowing myself to abstract the figure and do not worry too much about making everything perfect. George Pratt always taught me that by abstracting, you are eucating yourself about the things you see.....thanks for stopping by buddy..more work to come this week.

Arne S. Hey buddy..thanks for stopping by..I'm glad you are digging the pages. I'm actually just using a simple Pilot Precise Rolling pen..and a Pentel Brush Pen for filling in the darks...the colors stuff is simply a watercolor wash.

Hehe, I love these pages, very dynamics and loose pen use!
The faces are very lovely, they have a lot of character but also a bit of a tragi-comedy quality. It's a good thing you posted these sketches here, I know your colour-finished-art and this is just a very nice dessert. I would love to see you do some comic pages... I think you could pull it of easily.

Cheers.

Gilles Hey buddy..thanks for stopping in once again.....I am glad you are liking the drawings....my sketchbook has always been a very personal part of me that I have never shared much with the public, but I am very happy to see that it is so positively received. I am actually considering changing my proffessional direction from the work I've done before (the very tight stuff)...to a more loose approach such as these sketches. One of my influences for drawing this loose was my mentor George Pratt....and Steve Mummford's "Baghdad Journal"....I will be posting in here on a weekly (if not daily) basis...so keep a look out.

Those are lookin great. And those are some good lookin 5 sec gestures, you got way better results than I was ever able to get. I actually miss doin those things! The only crit I'd have for the figures is to try and not blow off the feet, but lord knows I'm guilty of that too.
I took a look through your portfolio, damn a lot of awesome stuff I hadn't seen before. Love that Meganck portrait. You've gotten a lot of really awesome pieces workin with Brick, that seems like a really cool gig for ya.
Also, I'm still livin in Richmond, a couple blocks behind the museum, so I'm down for drawin some time. I really should get down to those figure drawing sessions too.

Hey, don't know how much critique I can give you, your stuff is pretty cool. The only thing I noticed is that the hands you draw (only when they're attatched to figures) tend to be kind of .... squiggly? Like in the picture second from last, the face is really nicely done, and then his fingers look like they are almost broken. If it was done differently, I would say to be careful of the shapes that you were using, but it doesn't look like you use underdrawing, so... Maybe that's what you should be trying out? You've obviously got your pen/ink technique down, why not try drawing with volume rather than with line? It will improve your line drawings because you'll understand better how the shapes work, and therefore the lines.

rickrude
October 2nd, 2007, 03:38 PM
GREAT lines....I'm trying to get more expressive with my lines myself. Maybe more contour practice.

Papparazzi
October 3rd, 2007, 08:24 AM
daestwen you are absolutely right...I am havinf trouble with doing the hands on people that are moving since those seem to be the most active parts of the models that I'm drawing.....good point..and yess...absolutely correct..I need to work more with shape and value.
thanks for the crit.

I'm freakin' in love. Just like...the confidence you must have to be able to do all that in pen. And so cleanly! You must be oozing with talent and experience! I don't want to sound like an asskisser, but I've never been so genuinely impressed. But then again, I'm just a newbie. But just wow.

Papparazzi
October 4th, 2007, 06:13 AM
fearoffrying hehehe...you are too kind. Honestly, it's just practice. Believe me, my first attempts at this approach were nothing like it. But once you start trusting your eyes and speed up the drawing process, you would be suprised how far you can get after even just one sketchbook. So all I can say is practice practice and more practice. If you'd like, you can also check out some of my more finished work at www.freewebs.com/salamunicart/ and let me know what you think. thanks for checking in buddy and keep in touch

Sick line!!!! Kind of reminds me of Kent Williams. If I can offer a suggestion I've noticed that after you do the initial lines that a few heavy handed marks and contour lines, used really selectively will really pop the image. You can almost use them to add a focus, be it a face, hand, collar, whatever. Check out http://www.jjeanius.net/FigureDrawing.html for examples of what I'm talking about. Can I also recommend the SKB Secretary SB-1000 .5 pen aka James Jean's pen of choice. After you use it you won't go back!! Great stuff man, got kind of lengthy since your work pumped me up. take care,

I hope everything is going well. Thank you for dropping by..and keep making that amazing work.
wishing you all the best,

Fvallejo: Thank you for your kind words buddy. You have made a really good poin: my work tends to get somewhat cluttered with lines and creating a focus has been something that my sketches have been lacking. I think it is due to the fact that I go through them really fast (still, no excuse). I have checked out your blogspot. Your work is MARVELOUS! I was getting goosebumbs as I was scrolling through the pages man......breathtaking stuff. I have also checked out that link: and WOOOW. Blew me away. Thanks so much for sharing.
I see you go to Ringling, no wonder you are kicking ass. Do you have George Pratt for any of your classes?...He was my teacher here at VCU a few years back and I haven't heard from him in a really long time. Tell him "Tin" said hello (Hopefully he'll remember me.

Hey Tin, great sb you've got going here. It's pretty neat to see some traditional color work (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=227680&stc=1&d=1193663015) from you, since what I've seen has either been digital or nearly monochromatic. Gives me some ideas for what I can do with my sketchbook for Danny's course (is that watercolor? gouache? acrylic ink?).

Hey Jenna,
yea all the color stuff is simple quick watercolors. It's a nice way to give your pages a more finished look. Also, since I'm working with line a lot and not value...it's easier to seperate certain shapes when the drawing gets too complex.

Hello Tin
damn I do my best to bump this thread to a 5*.... people are jealous I tell ya. Jealous. I know you are looking for some crits, so I'll do my best to muster one up. I notice you have a beautiful sensitivity for the figure, and it's a very unique style. You draw a lot in pen, which will obviously lead to some distorted figures; I have found out that if I do a really long drawing, say like a cast drawing or long portrait study, and I try to make everything exact as possible, It helps tons with drawing faster and more accurately. Not sure if you do a lot of them to begin with, but I thought i'd throw it out there. It might help with some distortion issues. But anyway, these are really lovely drawings. Can't wait for the next batch.

Skeiff: Thank you for your critique...you are very kind. You know..it's funny you mention it , when I was in college, all I was ever doing is rendering my ass off...hahha. I had that habit going, where I wanted to make every single page a work of art....which really slowed me down in the process to be honest. (I think it's because all I ever did was rendering) After taking courses with George Pratt, and now that Sterling Hundley is one of my colleagues at work, I have learned that one educates themselves by abstracting figures. It helps you think in shapes better, I feel. Even though I draw a lot with line, the way I look at my drawing is that they are nothing more than abstracted and stretched out shapes. But you are right, it is good to stay varied...which I have not done lately....and I agree..paying some closer attention to the figure and spending a little more time on drawings definately improves the overall gestural approach to drawing.
Thanks for supporting my thread buddy, much appreciated,
-Tin

I love your drawings dude. Very free looking lines, but still very confident, and getting more and more accurate as far as I can tell. My only crit would be to use a bit more variation in line wide, at least as a test to see how it changes you drawings. Also, I want to see more paintings. The guy playing the banjo was especially nice I think.

nofingers Thanks buddy, I appreciate your feedback. I agree about the line width...it needs to vary more. The reason I use a Pilot pen, however, is that I can go really, really fast with it. All the line drawings you see here didn't take more than 10 mins or so....and yes...there will be more digi paintings comming up!!

ajvenema thank your for the kind words. I'm not quite sure what you mean by panels?? Do you maybe mean shapes? (such as in shading/painting?) The reason I work in line in my sketchbook is becasue I draw these things extremely fast..maybe 10-15 mins per piece....It is my meditative way to break loose from my more tight/detailed-finished stuff.
thanks for dropping by!!

Tin, great stuff as always. It gives me the motivation to try and keep up with your work rate. I really like the sketches where you've gone in and spotted some blacks, like the one of Sterling (?) with the polka-dot socks... Nice touch. I think the blacks give the eye a place to rest after all the intense patterns you're getting so good at. Hopefully I'll make it down to Richmond over break and we can destroy some paper together.

Frohe Weihnachten!

J Love Hey man, thanks for dropping by the thread....I agree with you on the black shapes...the problem is usually that I don't have the patience to apply them in most cases since I rush through these drawings. But I'm trying to make each page count from now on, so hopefully I will continue to do this with every drawing...and yes..that was supposed to be Sterling...but he always moves around so much..it was hard to get him down on paper.

Damn man. I see a lot of James Jean in there too, particularly in stuff like this (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=258893&stc=1&d=1197583273). You're really going for the line and not generalizing, awesome job man.

I think I see a couple of Benitez. And one looks like Sterling. And is one of them George Pratt? Of all the people I recognize, I think the self portrait captures likeness more than the others. Maybe that is something you can work on, capturing the likeness better. How exactly to go about doing that I have no idea. I struggle with that too. I like the ones with the juxtaposition of heavy pattern and clean line-only areas... like the self portrait, and some of the ones of the girl. And yea the yellow paper is fun.

Burton!!!!!!!!!...Holy crap man...had no idea you were on here buddy....!!!
Thanks for dropping by! I agree with you on the likenesses..I think it really depends on how still the person is sitting...and half the time they walk away while I'm still drawing them so I have to make things up along the way. That's why the self portraits are more accurate...since I'm sitting still much more. Also most of these are really fast gesture drawing....I fly through them in about 10 mins or so, which is a problem, since I should be focusing more rather than eating through the paper.
BTW....I checked out your site..great stuff man...I had no idea you were into concept art....keep crankin..your stuff is BEAST!!

I agree with what you say about abstracting the body, I have a hard time doing this unless im under the influence of natural herbs, I love how easily it comes you. I really like your style, it reminds me of American Splendor. I would love to see some panels that conveyed a short story.
I would love to see more, keep it up!

Hey loving the work Pap, keep it up man, can you give me a little insite into your process cause its all so tight, i mean do you just start at one point and draw and thats it as my proportions would be all over the place. I always look at work like this and marvel how you can capture so much about a person and make it look so natural, a couple of simple lines and a persons face comes alive. I normally sit here trying to shade for hours and end up with a lifeless, flat space alien.

Top class work fella.

zweiDee Thaaaaaaaanks buddy....glad u like ^__^'
-Tin

jtrodreigez Thanks for the kind words. There is several things to consider when drawing this way. First thing to learn is to frame the object you are drawing like you would when taking a picture with a camera....so think of your eyes as the camera lens. When looking at the thing you are drawing, you need to know what areas will fit on your pages and how to control the edges of the paper...this way you can start a drawing anywhere on the page(the foot, the hand, the head).
Step two is to pay 90% attention to the thing you are drawing and 10% to your paper. This comes with practice , however, and you need to work on your hand to eye coordination.
Also, try not to make it anatomically "perfect" when you are drawing this particular way. To me, drawing like this , is a way of loosening up.....so try to educate yourself by abstracting things in your image (It will result in a much more unique piece of art).
And I think the most important thing is building confidence in your drawing. Stop caring..stop worrying...and just DO IT!.....you will be suprised what can happen if you just eat thorugh the pages on a daily basis....the skill will develop naturally......practice practice and practice!!!!
observe the figure, and just simply let go.. ^__^'
-hope this helps,

A few sketches from past month or so. Also, please read the note below!!!!!!
Me and a few fellow artists are starting a sketchbook blog competition!!!
As posted by Jeff Love:
Inspired by National Novel Writing Month, in which participants have one month to write a 50,000 word novel, Sketchbook Month challenges participants to completely fill a sketchbook over the course of one month. Everyone who enters can win - all you have to do is finish the sketchbook. This also means, of course, that everyone can lose - and that's why this blog was created. By posting your own progress and seeing other people's pages, the hope is we will drag each other over the finish line together. This also gives us a forum to exchange techniques, tips, and discoveries we've made while pushing ourselves to make our best sketchbooks ever.

The Basics:

The Month - I picked May because school ends at the beginning of the month, and it would be so easy to just play videogames and drink beer for a month since I don't have to draw for school assignments. Also, selfishly, I'm heading down to the Illustration Academy in June and want to keep in shape for it.

Sketchbook - The large Moleskine sketchbook is the default sketchbook of Sketchbook Month. 100 pages in 31 days means you have to average 3.225806452 pages per day - easy! If you don't dig the moleskine, feel free to use whatever sketchbook you like, but if it's less than 100 pages, or half the size, you'll only be half a winner...

Who can join? - Anyone can - just contact me or leave a comment here with your email address and I'll get you set up to start posting on the blog. If you know someone who you think should do this, send them a link - spread the word.

---Jeff

TO JOIN GO TO: http://sketchbookmonth.blogspot.com/

P.S. Feel free to post what's happening in your sketchbook right now, too. But when May 1st rolls around, you've got to start a completely brand new, never before used sketchbook. No cheating!

Like your updates :) It's a great feeling to start a new sketchbook :sungod: - I seem to like the 'new sketchbook' feel so much I have about 5 on the go at any one time... :bashful: (I get around it by saying each has a different purpose ;) )
I like your people sketches the most - and environments :) Not too keen on the red lines, (red lines seem to distract from the black... blocking in larger areas with red feels as though it would be more effective, but that's just my 2 cents worth...)

thanks for sharing :)

question - how long did it take you to do the simple line drawings? are these shots that you set up or was it a photo or did you just draw it as you saw it?

Don't you have a problem with things moving whilst your drawing them? and how everything is slightly changed so that it no longer lines up with what you have created so far?

Papparazzi
July 28th, 2008, 08:36 AM
Gail_Blitzy: Thta's a great question man. But as you can see most of the people I draw are in fairly steady poses...they are either sitting or laying.....sometimes if they are in a more active pose..I ask them to just hold a bit steady if I'm drawing a specific body part...but then again....if I'm drawing strangers...I just have to draw really fast to capture what I see......and yes..it gets quite distorted most of the time..hence the weird anatomy in my sketches :)

pencilgeek: Glad you dig the work buddy...the girl in the drawings is my girlfriend....(always patient as I draw her every darn day :)
