I'm sort of newer to CA, more of a lurker, but I want to start changing that and draw more and get come critiques, so that equals a sketchbook for me I guess :)

About me: I live in western new york, I'm 16 years old, and taking any and all art classes available (which is now less than I'd like, thanks to my school which doesn't believe in the importance of art :( )
I don't have a whole lot of experience in digital arts, my art teacher has photoshop on the art room computers, so any extra time goes there, and I'm currently saving up for photoshop or painter.....

alrighty then, to the sketches! Right now just exercises and, well, sketches. I'll have to get some pics of my finished stuff asap.

The scanner isn't the greatest, so some of the pics have blurrier areas where there aren't and and the hand one is rather grainy, which it isn't.

any and all critiques greatly appreciated! :)

cool stuff! keep pushing the range of your grayscale values. make sure you hit the dark darks and the lighter lights. this will give your drawings much more believability and depth. if you're working from a reference in color, it helps to bring it into photoshop and desaturate it (aka make it grayscale). keep drawing!

If you're still in highschool, you might try creating your own 'independent study' or something like that. I think I ended up taking extra night classes at a college when I figured out I wanted to go to college for art. The mentoring thing should help you out a ton. Keep up the good work.

hey man don't worry about your drawings looking bad or not turning out the way you want it to be. Just do the best you possibly can and enjoy the process-someday you'll look back at these drawings and say ''oh my that sucks I definitely can draw better than that old me.'' :^^:

I know you did those studies from Maoi's thread, but I really want to see alot more life drawing in here. Draw at least a few hand studies every single day, even if it's a few minutes before bed. At least!!! Do as much as you possibly can every day, during school and while you are bored and stuff.. A great way to learn things about creatures is also to draw real ones- everything from Aardvarks to Zebra. Make sure you hit the weird ones- Whales, Rhinos, Gazelles, and the like. Things with very unique features.

and again, more life drawing!

Ok, it's been WAY too long since my last post in here, from now on at least a post every week, I promise! :) Also, thanks for the crits Justin, I'm finally starting to get into the habit of doing at least some hand studies every day, and on occassion a self portrait, which I'd like to do more of. Well, with that said, more sketches (I have done more than just these, most in Moai's tutoring in Animal Anatomy, will probably post those when I've some more time) First one, well, a lot of just stuff- a couple of had studies, some random shapes and little figures, a bit of a cliff in the background on the top along with a horse head, plus an eye and some random shapes.

If you want more training, take a look at the summer classes at Max the Mutt in Toronto. This year in addition to the "Learn To Draw" intensive, we'll offer a painting intensive. The web site is www.maxthemutt.com. I'm not sure if summer courses are posted yet, but if they aren't give Carla Drmay a call at 1-877-486-MUTT.

Thanks Maxine :) I really do need to look into taking extra art courses, the tricky thing with summer vacation though is me getting a job over summer vacation, so I can get a Wacom tablet and maybe a laptop....

Well, as far as an art update, only a few pieces, a few Bridgeman studies (I just got his book for Christmas) and a painting assignment for my art class, which took somewhere around 12 hours I think (sorry about the crappy photo!)

Ok, some PS stuff that I fiddled with this week in school, more in the next few days hopefully.
First, crappy still life of some chalk in a box had about 30 minutes to do it.

And a robotic angel of sorts I started yesterday, I know pretty much all of the body is too big right now, but that was just the original quick sketch.

I love, love, love your girl with the missing/mask face with the "?" on her shirt. You have technically much better pieces and have improved a lot since then, but it's really interesting. Her posture, the sadness as the masks looks at her back are all really great details.

I'd love to see you revisit that idea/theme again. It seems your AP art class is helping a lot - awesome!

Kieran , thanks :D

Baltar: Thanks for the comments, that's definitely still one of my better pieces :) I wouldn't mind going back to the concentration idea again either, but I need a little break for now. AP did help a lot too, it was a lot of stress and a strain on a lot of time, but in the end pushing myself that hard was one of the best things I did.

An update on Bourne (not to mention a better scan :) )

Well i'm back and it seems by your recent updates you've progressed through xmas better than i did with the odd doodle here and there lol.
The selfportrait looks good, really strong facial expression. Only crit is the black outline? Understand if its for the background but the line on your right forearm pulls it out of realism just that tad. But other than that i like it.

hey, you are really imrpoving, your effort is starting to pay off!
my advice to you would be that you try to loosen up your sketchwork, look at sketches that you like from other artitst and ee where they work loose and where they work more defined, it adds alot to the overall image, when certain parts are more worked out thean others! :)

Kieran: Thanks man :)
Spaz: Thanks. I definitely want to start branching out more- especially character and environmental-wise.
Sheetghost, Janos, Verehin: Thanks all for stopping by :D

Anywho, back to updating.....
Not much actually, been spending a LOT of time helping out building and painting sets for our school's musical, so that's been eating up a solid 2-3 hours every day that's normally regular art time.
But a couple of Bridgeman studies to keep me going:

Nice job on the arm studies... ;)

So you didn't get your caterpillar done for Chow. Thats too bad, the sketches were cute. :D

I too am impressed with the detail you go into for the Bridgeman studies, nice work and kudos for already delving into the scary world of animal anatomy.

Here's me struggling with mere humans!

Keep it up :D

shannanigan: hehe, thanks :) But yeah, didn't get around to finishing the caterpillar, however, busy saving up for a laptop and corel painter x because it's a lot quicker to do stuff like that digitally....
Vehkt: lol, thanks :) I really rather enjoy the Bridgman studies, once I get going on them I find it's hard to stop :)

And along those lines of Bridgman studies, got a couple more I got around to doing up today, 2nd one, didn't get to take notes on the supinator and pronater yet.

hey my friend..i totally feel your pain about having an underfunded art program. My high school in cleveland literally was the least funded in the whole bloody county. But looking at your work from your first post to your last - there is some serious improvement in content. The usual mandatory drawings of drapery just dont cut it in the real world; Im really happy to see that your branched off into some more heavier stuff like that american flag piece.

aliciad33: yeah, I won't get started on the arts in high school because I will never shut up but the best we can do is take up every opportunity that pops up and work hard on our own time
vehkt: something peculiar, huh? :)

Ok, yeah, I've been slacking a lot here, need to get back on track :)
So here's a little to get me started:

finishing up more bridgman studies
578196
578198

and my idea for the current COW sound creature.....have my doubts that he'll be finished in time, and yes, he's missing his hands or whatever you'd like to call them, always seem to get stuck on hands/feet/paws/hooves/claws, etc. for some reason.

You're quite good with animals - keep 'em coming beastmaster!

These bridgeman studies also look like serious business - maybe make sure to draw some figures and poses so you can apply the anatomic knowledge.

I really like your art! And I totally did that exact upside-down drawing in Art class a few years ago. You've got some really great stuff, especially your painting work. The watercolor graffiti scene is one of my favorites. I think one thing you can benefit from is the removal of absolute black in your paintings. In real life, if you're going for realism, almost nothing is pure black- it's always a very dark shade of a color, usually blue. When doing a picture in traditional media, it is best to use one of those instead of black, even for deep shadows, as black can remove from the painting as it seems odd to the human eye. I would also work on more dynamism: your pictures have a good deal of shading and proportion, but images like the one with the girl and the mask can be made -so- much more interesting by changing the view point so it's not dead-on. You obviously understand vanishing points and perspective, so you should put them to use in all your works.
Great stuff, though! :)

Hey, I'm new here and was just snooping through your sketchbook. Your name drew me like a magnet. Are you a lucid dreamer, too?

I really like all your beasties and creatures. It is neat to be able to look through a years worth of sketches all at once, like this and see the progression and evolution. Like I said I'm new here, so I'm totally blown away by this whole section of the site.

Eesh, trying to get back into doing more stuff here now (had a week off from school)- and it wasn't much of a break. Had to read The Count of Monte Cristo for english- did as much of that as I could, but still have another 200 pages to go :\ In other words though, not much time for artwork, and what I did manage to do up for the battle of the sexes td.....er.....not to happy with it.

Ok, rant over though, time to get going on art! :)
Was fiddling around in photoshop at school today and decided to have a go at enviros....only ended up with one speed one that I was kind of happy with:

Apologies for the crap photo- but the scan was even worse- didn't pick up and of the shading or details.....

670360

I think I learned a lot doing this, been in a creative funk of sorts, going back to an odd mood I've been in the past week or two. Just getting upset about realizing I don't think I know who I am anymore. I'm sick of being so nice I'll put up with anyone's and everyone's bullshit and end up acting like a mirror, simply reflecting people's personalities and losing myself in the process. Haven't had a good idea for a piece of art for so long now because of that- I'm not going to bullshit my way through a project to have someone (especially myself) call foul and fraud because I know it won't be me. Fuck it, I've thought over it so much in my head it doesn't even make sense to me anymore- hell, I don't even make any sense to me anymore.
Guess I'll just stick with studies for now then.

Hrm, another update. Finishing up a lot of finals for this next week and then we're off on winter break for a month with the goal of filling an entire small sketchbook (smaller pages but it's a fat bugger) and would like to get some personal projects/paintings done.

yeeeehaaaw :mod: look it's a horse jumping through the fire!
....anyway...Very cool, as always. It's amazing how ccad has helped improve everyone's work so much. The creature studies are the best :D...crazy detail.
Seeing some of your work early in the year inspired me to try harder in my sketches ;)

You need a little more practice with your figure studies, they seem a little stiff. But your creature concepts look awesome and really fresh. Keep up the good work.

The Original [E]: They're not in this post (will be in next!) but I've been practicing figures a lot lately (both in and out of class). Thanks :)

I should update regularly so massive dumps like this one don't happen, but here we go again!
Now this is all the stuff in my current sketchbook so far, I still have lots of stuff to post from my previous sketchbook and classes but figure this is a fair start
Let's see then......creature fun:

I love your graphite work so much; it has some sort of personal THING about it, and the way you cross-hatch into the background...

(That up there is why I never leave constructive comments. :'D )

OH SNAP. Must kill old with the new! Well newER work at least....
So I'm back updating on the grounds of not being able to break a pinky promise :3 and here goes lol
First off some older stuff, maybe by about a month or two but what the hell, why not post it?

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f6/Pinto777/CA/IMG_6047.jpg

Some other, more recent work pertaining to a collab with Wolfyu. Not gonna elaborate at this point in time (ANGELS is all I'll say for now >.> ), but when I have more work done on it and more time to post I'll be sure to write out a lot of annoying thought process stuff ;)
(*er this, first one was an idea I was playing with but quickly scrapped XD)
