Hello to you all and welcome to my humble little sketchbook.
This is my first thread here so here is a little info on myself to start off:
I am living in Sweden and studying game design and developement in Skövde. I've been drawing and sketching ever since I was a kid and this thread is meant to show my development aswell as to develop myself even further so please leave your comments and critique.
[Here are a few sketches to start things off, there will be more here very soon]

Man, you got very impressive sb in here! I really like the style in your pencilworks. Great characters and inspirative creatures. My favorite is that dude with huge sword, cape and long hair in post 5. Seems you need to practice in digital painting (well, dont we all), but overall they are looking good.

The chefdude seem to have done something good and are proud over it, and he is waiting for someone to hug him. the sincerity in his eyes. ahw!
Anyway, the sketch of the girl with the huge swords are something you might consider continue working on, she's one good piece of art and are by all means worth a little more attention, I even think you should put som color on her just because it sounds like a good idea.

The swordgirl with the mountains in the background is my absolute favourite.

hi buckster, it's great to see your improvement over this thread.. as far as c & c for the digital painting of the robot, i think it's working quite well but flattens out in the foreground.. my fave is the sketch of the machine/girl above the butcher. that'd look nice painted!
Buckster
September 26th, 2007, 10:40 AM
Pearblossom: Thank you very much for the nice comment, I will consider doing a digital of that girl ^^. I agree with the flattening effect on the robot. THank you for the c&c
Here is a process of the butcher piece. I guess that I rushed the end too much so the hands, weapons and bg are very sketchy.
here you go ^^

Vi tar det på svenska...
Så, nu ska jag försöka analysera och ge kritik efter bästa förmåga... Håll i hatten.

hey, really cool sketches. Looks like you'd be perfect in game design. I especially like most of your black and white sketches, the rendering comes across really well. Your digital stuff is looking good too, no specific crits on that, just more practice.
I think there are some anatomy issues in a few of your pics that could use some resolving. Though your style is very cool, I just think some of the peices don't seem right anatomically.
and on that butcher pic, his pectorals(right one) should lead under his deltoid i thought, his kinda got a pointy bit overlapping, just kinda stuck out for me at first :P
very cool work overall though, looking forward to updates
cheers,

Hey Buckster, nice update mate. Looked through your other stuff, and its a good start to this SB. Will be looking forward to seeing you improve, you have a nice pencil rendering style, but as already said there are some anatomical issues that need to be addressed, I'm sure that will be resolved in due time if you keep practicing and doing studies. The most recent piece shows some improvement already, its a pretty tight sketch(really like the strokes you did). Keep it up, and keep messing around with digital work too. :) Ciao.

I spent some time really looking through your work and i'm impressed. I do not have at all as much experience in Concept Arting nor Sketching but i still do think you're doing some really great work. It's great, but it can get alot better!
I have to agree on some comments that the pictures do get better, also i saw a few anomalies with the anatomy. I really liked the picture that were "complete", the ones that you shaded very nicely with greys (ex. , Paladin & Hell).
As i know you in person i know you're really ambitious, there are no limits for what you can succeed with if you just put your soul to it. I do understand that you do these things to practise on your skills in shading, anatomy, contours etc. Just as a personal oppinion i think it would be cool to see a whole picture you put down alot of effort on. A picture that could maybe be a bit bigger, loads of detail, shadows and color. Maybe i'm way off but yeah. (Now that i think about it, it's a bit like the coloured pictures in post #2 but with more detail, i really like the colours and work you've done on them)
I have bookmarked your sketchbook and will keep checking back aswell as talk to you in real life. I'm sure we'll be doing something together some time, mate.
Keep at it!

Nice start on that sketch..Try filling the whole outline of the character as a black silhouette and render to light. Seems like you only did that with half the character :) Renderings looking cool so far. I'd recommend softening up that tricep a little, that edge is a bit too hard. Keep it up!
Buckster
October 7th, 2007, 07:44 AM
Siro Brozzi: Thank you for the crit, I should have done the siluette more properly and you are right about the tricepts as well.

Hey you. While checking the sketches here in your fine little sketchbook, I realized, besides the fact that I like most of them, you seem to be having a habit of enlarging the legs when it comes to your characters. I don't know if this is intentional. But anyway, that's the crit I can come up with at the moment (be mindful of the proportions of the legs); what I have time to scribble down here at the moment anyways. You know, what's with all the essays and what-not. I will try to check in once in a while and comment some more. I suppose that it will happen a little more often when I start posting stuff here again myself, in the hopefully not-too-distant future :) Take care, see you at school!

still awsome man. If i haven't said so before, your pencil shading is insane :P
some crits i got: some of the pics (well, mainly just those shoulder studies from before), the deltoids seem a bit small or flattened.
and also, in some of your B+W digi paints, the contrast seems a bit to strong and the jump from black to light midtone/highlights seem a bit to quick, loosing the colour identity or middle value stuff... if that makes sense
Those character pics are top notch though, very nice
all the best,
chris

Dude your stuff is so impressive.Im in love with the guy gun slinging within the hail storm of bullets.Your tonal values make it look really dramatic. The only thing I see a little struggle with in your drawing are your torsos. Its something weird with the way you build them.I don't know exactly what it is but when I figure it out I will tell you.

October 17th, 2007, 11:46 AM
Nice updates! I especially like your pen concepts, the girl next to the radioactive guy and that last four-armed dude in particular. Gotta say the rendering is really pretty in those, you're improving in that area.
The digital stuff is all good also, it has improved a lot only the last one or two weeks, judging from this sketchbook. Can't really come up with anything new to critises, the only new piece I don't like is the guy tearing a plate of some robot. The anatomy is off on the torso and the pose looks a bit stiff, your other work is much more dynamic.

Buckster! You're improving rapidly. Can't belive you're new at digital painting, you handle it so well. Love your pencil sketches, the anatomy and most of all, the imagination! I can tell you practice every day. I like that you have very different poses for your characters, that way you learn much. I draw the same poses too often so I don't get the practice I need. Buckster, you got some great ideas here, but sit down and finish them! :) These would look way cooler with some more time spent on them. here´s a little something I did for a school assignement. We are ment to practice drawing perspective, cubes and such but I found that a tad boring so I did this instead. Please tell me what I can do to better create the space between the buildings, enviorments is something pretty new to me so it would be appreciated. There is a definite lack of details as well -_- I think I will post a follow up on this later, when more finished ;p

Hey buckster, great new updates! :) have to say you did a nice job on that last envo, the perspective, despite being a bit forced works. Next time you should make your canvas way wider and lay out the perspective grid so it doesn't turn out so extreme(unless intended). The last guy is a great start, alot cleaner, and the lighting works. Keep going at it! >:D Ciao.

a suggestion, try to give your figures some more movement, make them more dynamic. by adding angles to your work it can make an ordinary knight of death into a mega super knight of death whos about to lop off the head of .....you see where im going :pirate:

This one is awesome! Love the lighting & dynamics. And I don´t think the anatomy is over-defined, which in my opinion, is one of the things that you could improve on! Very few people are shaped like Bruce Lee^^. Anatomically, I doubt the pectoralis muscles would receed that fast towards the chest and sternum. I also think you could put some of that rimlight on the deltoids to express the form a bit more clearly.
Great to see so many updates, you´re improving alot! Keep at it and I´ll see you around. Merry Christmas!

About time I wrote something here again!
Gotta say I like your multi-coloured fleshy things. The supreme alien overlord and the battle beast. It's nicely pulled off and looks natural, and I love the fleshiness of them.
Generally I think your improving in all areas, but mostly in the digital medium. Most evident in those concept picture you showed me which aren't here in the sketchbook.
Nice to see that you're practicing drawing enviroments also, although I think they are weaker that your other work. I'm not so fond of the lightning in those two surreal enviroment pictures, might be the brightness settings on monitor, but everything looks very dark and un-illuminated, with light only on the edges. When I tweaked the contrast and bightness settings in PS though I think they looked much better. One gripe with the second one is that the brightest spots are the white trees, which unless they're self-illuminant doesn't make sense.
My new favourite is that guy in the latest update. Love the play with colours and light. Especially though I like his left arm, the structure and the colouring is lovely and I think it's a huge improvement in rendering skin and flesh. Just compare it to the nurse pic and you see how much more realistic and non-plastic it looks.
Anyway, keep updating!

Johan_79: Cheers and thank you for the lovely comments. I will be back and harass your SB shortly :p
Brashen: Thank you! I am always glad to improve and I am working my butt off to do so. It doesn't come as easy as I would want it to but that is part of the fun I guess
GeistDel: I do at least one speedpaint a day and limit myself to a maximum of one hour, basically trying some new things that I would not try otherwise ^^ most turn out like crap but they are just for practice.

Woah, last updates are great!!!The african warlord looks amazing,I love it!!
Question: Do you always work from B&W to color? How is that technique? You use a color layer or multiply layer?I have seen lots of artists, like you,who use that technique....but I don´t get it!

Camara: hey there ^^I use B&W as a way to get the values down without having to think about about colour and when colouring I dont need to think that much about values. I use a mixture of overlay, multiply and I guess most blending modes that suits me ^^I prefer to render in a normal layer though. I am pretty sure of what I want I might skip the grayscale altogether though.
DARAF: Thank you kindly.

Nice stuff! Smoothe pencilwork and cool characters.. I have one question though. How's the education in Skövde? At the moment I'm studying art at gymnasium, second year, and I'd like to keep on doing that after gymnasium. But I havn't really been searching for further education in sweden. So it'd be nice to hear how the education is etc.

let me be the first to say AWESOME update man!
love those environments! really nice feel to them! crits; your color pieces (speedpaintings) tend to get really busy, try to tone some down and strenghten others, don't get me wrong I love colors, and you have just about everyone of em, but as well as establishing a focalpoint in a picture with placement and such, you should (or maybe its just me) try to do the same color wise, it would make them stand out even more. thats my 2 cents.

I can say nothing but BRAVO! very nice use of color! perhaps the turqoise is competing a bit with the orange but hey, the two pieces are reallt great! on a side note the first sped paints lacks some secondary lighting in the roof from the orange glow. and the smoke explosion could use some more work, but other than that SWEET!

Buckster Buckster! who ate all the cookies?!?! :D
hah! digging those speedies man,
somethings you may want to look into;
Transitions between warm and cool colours, I see them, but there not exposed. Make sense? didn't think so.
Put into a different sentence: Over exposure isn't good, but at some point you'd want to assure the viewer and yourself "ahem" that these sources of ....light.... have a source.... :wtf:
in caves like this (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=367954&stc=1&d=1210709176), light bounces and your use of warms and the cools are contradicting each other. Exposing of those warm Tangerine hues to compliment its environment in terms of experimentation might come useful in the future.
~my 2 cents, keep it up!!!

You´re doing great Buck! You´ve grown immensely at technique and design. Now, I´d love to see you draw something that says something.
To me, your latest art seem like mostly studies, with design on top. In my opininon, you´re beginning to acheive a professional level of technique, still ways to go, but you´re getting there, and at this pace, you´ll be there far before you graduate, no problem. But the problem is, which I´ve begun to notice in A LOT of conceptart, even at the highest level, is that it´s dead. It doesn´t say anything. It doesn´t involve me. I´m not advocating going with a "cartoony" ;P style. far from it. Realism can evoke feelings and tell a story too, it simply might not be as easy (?). But I´m suggesting that you try out a shifting of "mental gears". Forget about the anatomy, the technique, and tell me a story. Draw not a noun, but a verb!
I see it much like you´re a singer, with great knowledge. You know the tones (anatomy), how to pitch your voice (colour theory), the lyrics (perspective) and all of the other parts that make a great tune. But when you´re singing, you seem so involved with the parts, the anatomy, the colour, the perspective etc., that somewhere, the overall message, and feeling of the song, is lost.
What I´m saying is, go for the total, an emotion or a verb, and trust in that you got the parts, cause you do! (well, there´s always more to learn of course ^^), and you´ll take your art to a whole other level. And also, it might be more fun!
Come on, tell me a story! Don´t show me the anatomy, show me an emotion or a story. Shift the mental gears...
My two cents anyway ;P
Peace (and free Tibet).

frenpalacio: Thank you for stopping by.
dchan: thank you for the crit mate, I will try to go for a more varied (controlled) palette, thanks again! and get your ass in gear and post more! ^^
kaktuzlime: Thank you for the kind words and the critique. I think I might have lost myself somewhere in the technical aspects of concepting. I think that I can still express emotions through my art in some cases but you are right in that it gets clouded by... stuffs.
The speedies are just a way for me to try and control shapes, colours and find motives in the random patterns I create, maybe I am controlling it a bit much? Thank you very much.

You get to hear me rant on and on about your work all day long, but still, I think you deserve some more rants..
I still like your sketches and line drawings better than your painted stuff, but that is just my personal preference for lines and simplicity.
Not all of your speedpaintings are great, but those who are, I am really impressed by. The colours and the amazing ideas you bring forth in just an hour really amaze me.
I especially like the sky of the piece in post #210 as it looks alot like classic watercolour painting.
I long to see more characters from you though, but I know that you´re really into sceneries right now so I'll just leave you to it..

your speedpaints lack scale! the last ones I have seen seem pretty smal, and try not to use only one color in a field, I like that you do have some redsin the green,, but you need some mid tones of yellow and brown in the green too! and get some decent texture brushes also. you are still blowing out the colors alot, try to have an even out some values and keep some strong. having just and ounce pure color and an ounce of no color. primary you should have semi strong colors, and just pump them where it is needed! also your strokes tend to get a bit sketchy, clean up some areas with the lasso tool. thanks for the update though! and keep fighting!

jenzi: Cheers mate! I agree with most of what you say but not some. I think that my framing comes from having drawn comics when i was younger, I will try to expand the views a tad. I kind of like a monochromatic scale when painting but I guess that is my personal preference but I could try to control it a bit more. After I am done with the 100 series I will revisit some of them and add middletones, gradients and polish them up, I am well aware that they are not "finished" by any standards ^^The sketchy strokes are just me, I like it, simple as that but I am always interested in what people think still.
Thank you very much for the crit, I will think it over and see what I can do.

Wow I haven't been in here for quite a while - crazy progression!
The pirate guy and his monkey turned out splendid!
Characters and creatures are delicious as always.
I really love the colors and the feel of these speedpaints; the only thing I'd say is that they could be clearer at times; they are badass stylizations, and the do convey an atmosphere, but the specifics of the environment - even the environments themselves - are sometimes lost for the sake of movement and energy (which I love anyway).
This last one is wonderful, as well as the spaceship one in post 220.
