View Full Version : Cartoonists/Animators/Stylized Artists, UNITE!

I've been noticing a rise in the number of more stylized/cartoony artists on CA in the last couple of months, so maybe it's time we found each other, perhaps checked out sketchbooks to offer some more focused critiques for a different approach to concept art. It seems like every time a cartoonist finds my SB, the response is "You're a cartoonist here too? I thought I was the only one!"
So, introduce yourselves, show us some work in this thread, tell us about your inspirations and influences and show the world that good stylized artwork isn't a rendering cop-out; it simply uses less to show so much more. :yayca:

I dabble in cartoons from time to time. Years ago, I created a comic strip and tried to market it without success. I'm considering dragging it out in the near future and giving it a makeover. Oh...don't have anything scanned in yet, so I will try to dig out some of my toons and post them sometime soon.

This is a really nice idea Steph! :) I think it would be awesome for all of us stylized artists on CA to know and support each other.
I'm not one of the new faces you talk about but I thought to just wave a hand here and post a piccie ;)

I guess intuitively I'm a cartoon artist, I can never do anything remotely serious. But I try. My main inspiration though is coming from Ben Templesmith now these days. Here's his website http://www.templesmith.com/faze3/
My other inspirations are the minds behind Oddworld, Tim Schafer, Ben Templesmith, and the game Anachronox.

I'll try to find something more interesting to look at.
Steph, I was kinda hoping for something more dramatic like a revolution or at least a union or something ;) Yes I'll pack the guillotine back, sheesh.

Hold on.. What?? Are you saying doing cartoony isn't serious? That it's half assed? ;p

Great idea Steph....it's true we illustrators/cartoony peoples are a little outnumbered-although I've found some of the sweetest illustration stuff ever on here too:P
I'm blown away by many concept artists (currently blowing my mind are Ryan Church, Thomas Pringle and Trevor Claxton) but among my illustration influences are: Skottie Young, Josh Middleton, Joe Sorren, Sam Flores, Jhonen Vasquez: esp the Zim, Gris Grimley, Dave McKean, Burton's animated films, Mucha, Margaret Macdonald, Egon Schiele and many many many more:) I really dig good graff, love beautiful animations and films (The Mirror Mask being one of my favourites visually), watch kids TV for the character design (Pocoyo rocks-and Pitt and Cantrop environments are sweet), oh and I love urban vinyl stuff. Oh and cool plush stuff, and good graphic design-even a well done ad will get me rather excited (Honda ads rock)..well you get the picture:P

Hahaha. No no, far from it. I was talking about my subject matter, not the style. I never completely take my stuff seriously, even in the most dramatic subject matter I make fun of it in some way. Just a bad habit of mine.

Of COURSE! Cartoon art is liek, super eazy cuz all u have to do is make liek 4 linez and u have teh charactar n it only takez u like 3 minitz to do that!!1!!
I'm stoked about the turnout so far guys! Enty, I was hoping you'd chime in, so yay ^_~
I forgot to list my influences btw! I looked at a lot of Disney and Anime when I was in high school and I think there are shreds of that still present in my work. A lot of Glen Keane, Chris Saunders sort of stuff and Rumiko Takahashi for sure.
Lately I've been drawing a lot of influence from...

Still got room in your soup pot for one more, Steph?
Started as a cartoonist, and I'll probably die one...
Influences...Kelly, Cobb, Wally Wood, and a few thousand others...and there's that feeling again that most of the people I just named died before most of this forum was born...:nohope:

I actually wrote about Mary Blair as part of my dissertation at uni...I was basically writing about outside artists who had been brought into Disney at some point, and how they could (or could not) influence the style of the stuff they were working on....was a fun thing to dissertate...spent my research hours watching as many Disney DVDs as I could get my hands on:P

Really, really, great stuff everyone. Awesome thread. I'm just wondering, though, if I want to make art like this should I use the pen tool to get those smooth lines you guys have? Maybe throw out some techniques or tips, I want to try my hand at this. :)
Costau D
September 17th, 2007, 07:11 PM
If you want the smooth lines. You should use a vector program such as Adobe Illustrator. But raster programs such as photoshop can still be used to the same degree. Vector programs though let you resize your art without any distortion due to resolution. Illustrator... is like the ultimate pen tool. haha

Hehe, Steph: I dont think I did include Eyvind. You can read it if you want (I'd have to dig about to see if I still have it)....My main focus was on Gerald Scarfe and Mary Blair, also did a bit on some abstract artist form back in the day (Fantasia time), shocking I can't remember his name...he was Scandanavian I think, and pretty much got let go cause he was a little too abtract. It's not the greatest piece of writing as I spent the "research" period watching films and looking at "the art of" books (plus it was kind of rushed out in a week or two-because I was more anxious to get back to doodling:P) but if you still wanna read it let me know and I'll dig it out for ya....there are a few interesting things about the process of artist collaberation if I remeber correctly.
Ostrander..rocking...love the COW one
Ellingsworth-really like it...the blue face really works well.....I don't know about everyone else, but my lines are usually free-hand...unless I want a realy smooth, and long ark, then I'll use the pen tool (simulate presure when you do that can be cool too....but I usually set the minimum diameter a little differently if I use that so the ends arn't pointy). Illustrator is good too but I'm not all that used to it and its quicker for me to just do things in good ole PS:)
lets get this sketchbook on the go!
*Edit....I just went on your site Steph and I've been there before....I'm pretty sure your dog things are saved in my "influences" folder-awsome!!

Thanks, man, Photoshop's pen tool is very nice, but I don't have Photoshop so I just use GIMP, it works really good for me. I even would go as far to say it's easier to use the pen tool in that program than it is in Photoshop, I can't figure out how to get it to simulate pressure yet, though.
I like your piece you posted above a lot, I'm gonna steal some ideas and technique's off it! :)
